Measuring Tutoring Effectiveness By Program Delivery Model: Small Group Tutoring Compared To Tutoring In Labs In Mathematics, Physics, And Accounting, Mary A. Quinn Aug 1996

Measuring Tutoring Effectiveness By Program Delivery Model: Small Group Tutoring Compared To Tutoring In Labs In Mathematics, Physics, And Accounting, Mary A. Quinn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the effectiveness of two common tutoring program delivery models by analyzing tutored and nontutored students' grades and semester grade point averages in three subject areas. The effects of gender, age (if 25 years or older), course, duration of tutoring, tutoring contacts, and contacts per week are also measured. The approach to the ex post facto study is quantitative and utilizes data from the Student Information System at Appalachian State University and from tutoring contact sheets. Areas of data presentation include analysis of covariance results for experimental group, gender, age (if 25 years or older), and course; and …

Genomics: Past & Future

AT THE END OF THE ROAD in Little Cottonwood Canyon, near Salt Lake City, Alta is a place of near-mythic renown among skiers. In time it may well assume similar status among molecular geneticists. In December 1984, a conference there, co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, pondered a single question: Does modern DNA research offer a way of detecting tiny genetic mutations—and, in particular, of observing any increase in the mutation rate among the survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings and their descendants? In short the answer was, Not yet. But in an atmosphere of rare intellectual fertility, …

Community Service Throughout A School System, Anne Bishop Jul 1996

Community Service Throughout A School System, Anne Bishop

Service Learning, General

Teachers crave moments when student interest is high, questions flow freely, and learning is vivid enough to be retained. One such moment occurred when an elementary student in an environmental service project with wetlands volunteers said, "I learned that there are different types of wetlands and ours is a freshwater wetland that we are helping to stay fresh." These moments happen more often when students actively engage in experiences that involve helping others than during lecture, pencil and paper exercises, or assigned reading. Combined, service and learning become uniquely powerful (Kendall 1990). Facts learned in the classroom become a springboard …

Teaching/ Learning Experiences: Meanings Constructed By Participants Ini A Degree Completion Program For Adult Students, Natalie K. Manbeck Jun 1996

Teaching/ Learning Experiences: Meanings Constructed By Participants Ini A Degree Completion Program For Adult Students, Natalie K. Manbeck

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning that teachers and their adult students construct of their classroom experiences and to see how those meanings impact the teaching/ learning process. Because of the multiple factors affecting an educational experience, this study took the view that this should be explored in a holistic way. Most educational research focuses on the teacher's perspective, with students and their learning considered as the result of the educational process. In order to more fully understand what is occurring in classrooms and what students are actually learning, it is important to ascertain student perceptions …

Mathematics: Meeting The Needs Of High Education, Industry, And The Students Of Electronics Engineering Technology At Hawkeye Community College, Stanley J. Niedermann

Graduate Research Papers

This study pertained to a problem faced by officials of Hawkeye Community College (HCC). With the Tech-Prep educational reform now taking place in the United States and with the ever increasing diversity of electronics, those officials had to make a decision about the status of the courses entitled Applied Algebra and Electronics Math, both of which are included in the electronics engineering technology program at HCC.

The purpose of this study was to determine which mathematics courses were most appropriate for electronics technicians now and in the near future. Three research questions required answers: Question 1 -- should Applied Algebra …

Teaching Purchasing Skills Through The Application Of Constant Time Delay To Students With Moderate Mental Retardation During Community-Based Instruction, Jennifer L. Hueston Apr 1996

Teaching Purchasing Skills Through The Application Of Constant Time Delay To Students With Moderate Mental Retardation During Community-Based Instruction, Jennifer L. Hueston

Theses & Honors Papers

A constant time delay procedure was used to teach two students with moderate mental retardation how to purchase food at local fast food restaurants and snacks at a local convenience store. Students were taught to purchase the items using paper money and were required to determine the amount due by locating the next dollar up amount on a number line. A 5-second time delay was used in teaching the subjects these purchasing skills. Training was evaluated with a multiple probe design across settings. Results indicated subjects did not reach criterion in the fast food setting. In the convenience store setting …

Literature-Based Reading Instruction: Problems, Possibilities & Polemics In The Struggle To Change, James V. Hoffman, Sarah J. Mccarthy, Judy A. Abbott, Debra Bayles, Bonnie Elliott, Angela Ferree, Debra Price

Faculty Publications

Concerns are being raised in both professional literature as well as in the popular press regarding certain aspects of the literature-based movement. Here we report on findings from a longitudinal study of a group of first -grade teachers who have been attempting (with varying degrees of success)to introduce literature-based teaching strategies into their classrooms. We inspect the experiences of these teachers in relation to four areas of concern that have been raised regarding literature-based teaching: 1. skills instruction; 2.guided reading strategies; 3. literature selection;and 4. thematic teaching (or curriculum integration). We describe classroom practices and the 9 problems and possibilities …

G96-1278 Use Of Cooled Stallion Semen, Kathleen P. Anderson Jan 1996

G96-1278 Use Of Cooled Stallion Semen, Kathleen P. Anderson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses the benefits of using cooled stallion semen for horse breeding.

Using cooled, transported stallion semen is quickly becoming a viable breeding option for many horse producers. An increasing number of breed associations are recognizing the benefits of cooled semen and making it an option for producers. Mare owner's who are able to use cooled semen experience less expense related to breeding, if the program is properly conducted. Transporting cooled semen from the stud farm to the mare allows owners to reduce mare care and transportation costs. Furthermore, because the mare will remain on-the-farm, there is less chance …

Integrating Research And Undergraduate Teaching, Anne Bezuidenhout Jan 1996

Integrating Research And Undergraduate Teaching, Anne Bezuidenhout

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

I would like to describe some of the benefits and difficulties I have encountered in my attempt to integrate my research and teaching in an introductory logic course. My introductory logic students work in groups on semester-long research projects. The research that these students are involved in belongs to the scholarship of integration, rather than the scholarship of discovery (Boyer, 1990). It is highly unlikely that most instructors will ever teach a student who will break new ground in their field. However, what most students can begin to do is to think about what role one body of knowledge or …
