Student-Led Conferences : A Better Way, Beverly A. Maronn

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this journal article is to inform teachers and administrators of a better way to conduct student-led conferences. The typical format is to hold these conferences in a small, advisory setting. This paper describes an alternative format, a "homeroom" arrangement, in which one teacher is available to facilitate the conferences of 12-20 students. The staff at Harlan Community Middle School has found that a large group, everybody together-type setting works better. Digital Game-Based Learning: C++ / Rachael Voo Sze Ying, Voo Sze Ying Rachael Jan 2000

Digital Game-Based Learning: C++ / Rachael Voo Sze Ying, Voo Sze Ying Rachael

Student Works (2000-2009)

Game-based learning has been recognized as an important alternative to traditional method of teaching. It can help both adults and children in learning new concepts, gaining expertise and practicing knowledge. Though game-based learning is mostly applied in children's education, it can be helpful for adult vocational and university-level learning. Digital Game-based Learning: C++, which I prefer to refer to as Digital Game-based C++ Learning System is a web-based system that promotes learning C++ through games. It is the first of its kind whereby no programming language is to be learned through games. So, basically this system's objective to provide aid …

Faculty Teaching Partners And Associates: Engaging Faculty As Leaders In Instructional Development, Myra S. Wilhite, Joyce Povlacs Lunde, Gail F. Latta

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Special interest discussion groups provide opportunities for faculty to address specific instructional issues in a variety of areas including technology, distance learning, general teaching topics, pre-tenure issues, honors teaching, and the like. In 1995, to leverage the Teaching and Learning Center’s resources, outstanding classroom teachers were invited to provide leadership for discussion groups by serving as Partners or Associates. This chapter describes how an inexpensive faculty discussion-group leadership program maximizes a teaching improvement center’s resources, makes innovative teaching visible, and provides peer models for other faculty while helping promote an overall institutional culture that actively supports teaching excellence.

Getting Lecturers To Take Discussion Seriously, Stephen Brookfield, Stephen Preskill Jan 2000

Getting Lecturers To Take Discussion Seriously, Stephen Brookfield, Stephen Preskill

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

In this chapter we examine how faculty resistant to experimenting with discussion methods can be encouraged to take them seriously. We begin by acknowledging and addressing publicly the objections to using discussion most frequently raised by skeptical faculty. We then turn to proposing what we believe are the most common reasons why attempts to use discussion sometimes fail: that teachers have unrealistic expectations of the method, that students are unprepared, that reward systems in the classroom are askew, and that teachers have not modeled their own participation in, and commitment to, discussion methods. For each of these reasons we suggest …

Ec00-829 Flexible Cash Leasing Of Cropland, Roger Selley, Bruce B. Johnson, H. Douglas Jose, John D. Cole

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Agreeing on a cash rent can be a challenging task. Typically there is considerable uncertainty about what prices and yields will be in the upcoming year, and anticipating revenues is further complicated with the uncertainty of farm program payments, particularly in low income years when Congress may appropriate unexpected assistance. Attempting to determine a cash rent to apply for more than one year adds to the challenge. Also, adjustments to rent are required over time to remain current with changes in farm program provisions, production costs, productivity and product price levels.

The expected costs and revenues used to establish a …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide explains how managers can tailor recognition to individuals, thus increasing its effectiveness.

The Importance of Rewards

If there's one thing in life that everyone wants it's to be appreciated, rewarded and recognized for their contributions. Studies indicate that employees find personal recognition more motivational than money. Results of a recent Council on Communication Management survey confirms this. According to a recent Gallup poll of people who stopped volunteering, 42 percent said they felt their work was unimportant or was unappreciated at the work place or in a volunteer setting, appropriately rewarding people is important to retention and job …

Analysis Of The Relationship Between Student Satisfaction And Student Perception Of Interaction In A Compressed Video Setting, Monty E. Sullivan

Doctoral Dissertations

This study used subjects participating in courses offered via the statewide Louisiana Compressed Video Network for the purpose of analyzing the relationship between student perception of interaction and student satisfaction. A correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between student perception of interaction (sixteen interaction directionalities) and student course satisfaction (including instructional, technical, and overall satisfaction). Data were collected using the Compressed Video Student Perception of Interaction Scale and the Compressed Video Course Student Satisfaction Scale. The nine correlations used to answer the nine research questions resulted in a considerable number of significant correlations. The data generally indicated that …

Teaching Spelling: An Integrated Developmental Approach Within The First Grade Reading And Writing Curriculum, Dorothy Bower Jan 2000

Teaching Spelling: An Integrated Developmental Approach Within The First Grade Reading And Writing Curriculum, Dorothy Bower

All Graduate Projects

There has been extensive research concerning various instructional procedures for the acquisition of spelling skills. Many research-based principles of effective spelling instruction have emerged from one of two contrasting models for the development of spelling competence. Traditionally, spelling has been taught with textbooks and workbooks. Students followed a structured program with the goal oflearning to spell the weekly list of words. According to the traditional model, spelling is taught as a separate curriculum. Advocates for spelling reform suggest spelling instruction should be based on the understanding of the developmental nature of the child. This project report provides guidelines and strategies …

Effective Homework For Primary Students: A Handbook For Parents And Teachers, Gillian Buchanan Jan 2000

Effective Homework For Primary Students: A Handbook For Parents And Teachers, Gillian Buchanan

All Graduate Projects

After serving on a committee to create a homework policy for my school, I found that both teachers and parents need clarification about issues surrounding homework. I discovered many misconceptions about the effects of homework on student learning, and saw a need to explain these. I compiled research on the history of homework, and the main purpose of homework. As well, I gathered information to understand the positive and negative effects of homework, and homework at the elementary level compared to middle and high school. I found research on guidelines for parents, teachers, schools, and districts. Based on the research, …
