It’S Always A Pleasure, Hannah Joseph
It’S Always A Pleasure, Hannah Joseph
ENGL 1101 Showcase
It is 3:30 PM, the final school bell rings and students rush out, tired from a long day of school and ready to go eat some food. The closest food available is the popular fast-food chain, Chick-fil-A. Arriving at the restaurant, Lassiter students laughing, and it becomes super busy due to all the students getting out and the Lassiter teachers in the drive-through to grab a quick meal before heading home to grade papers. There is a strong smell of fried chicken, making customers eager to get their food. Slowly, I realized that all the customers were from Lassiter High …
Living With Depression, Joseph Harris
Living With Depression, Joseph Harris
ENGL 1101 Showcase
The genre of my home is living with depression. This is worth analyzing because more people need to talk about it, and a lot of people deal with it every day, especially younger people. This essay will go over an audio/visual modality, a purely text/visual modality, and an audio/face-to-face modality. These are worth analyzing because they give a basis of information to people who don’t understand what it feels like, but also to give solace to the people who live with it every day. The first analysis to be done is over a YouTube video.
Soulsborne, Jacob Homier
Soulsborne, Jacob Homier
ENGL 1101 Showcase
The Soulsborne genre is known in the video game community for its hard boss fights and unforgiving challenges. This draws in many players looking for a challenge and to feel accomplishment for beating notoriously difficult games. This has led to an entire genre forming around these games and those trying to emulate them. But what is so enticing about these communities? Why have they formed around these games, and what type of rhetoric and tones are being used? The best place to start is by looking at one of the games of this genre, Dark Souls 3.
A Day In The Life Of Me, Jake Patten
A Day In The Life Of Me, Jake Patten
ENGL 1101 Showcase
As my alarm blares at 8:30 a.m. on a cold autumn morning, I groan and reluctantly open my eyes. My bed is entrapping me in its warmth, and the thought of getting up feels like a betrayal to my body. I look around my room and see a soft, golden hue as the sun peeks through the blinds. I lay in my bed contemplating, “Should I get up for class? Or should I go back to bed?” Just as I start to drift back to sleep, the roar of leaf blowers echoes outside. The ear-piercing sound cuts through the silence, …
The Grimdark Compositions Of The 41st Millenium, Jack Rivers
The Grimdark Compositions Of The 41st Millenium, Jack Rivers
ENGL 1101 Showcase
Warhammer 40k, or sometimes referred to as 40k, is an expansive universe filled with characters, novels, video games, artwork, and more. The main themes of Warhammer 40k are all about the grim darkness of the far future: unending war, cosmic horror, tyrannical governments, constant death, destruction, and so on. As such, these themes are epitomized in the compositions of Warhammer 40k: An Intro to the Dark Millennium for its atmospheric tone, “I AM” - A SERVATOR’S TALE for its relatable themes, and BATTLEBARGE for its vivid imagery.
A Day In My “Mostly” Lazy Life, Jonathan Yi
A Day In My “Mostly” Lazy Life, Jonathan Yi
ENGL 1101 Showcase
I managed to wake up early that day on the surprisingly uncomfortable bed, or what is more accurately described as an itchy mattress laying on barren wooden frames, that I slept on in my room. This was practically a miracle, as I had gone to sleep past midnight, as I usually do. I still somehow managed to miss all the birds singing in the morning, or perhaps it was so early that I had woken up before the birds, which is even more unlikely.
A Dessert Loved By Many Locals Of The China Region, Michelle Lee
A Dessert Loved By Many Locals Of The China Region, Michelle Lee
ENGL 1101 Showcase
The unofficial food of the Chinese New Year is niángāo. Food is an important part of the Chinese New Year as it shows not only the cultures but also the values that certain groups within uphold. Niángāo is significant in its own ways as it’s considered a “lucky food”. It is considered a delicacy and symbolizes prosperity for the upcoming years.
Drifting: An Unappreciated Sport, Mandeep Sethi
Drifting: An Unappreciated Sport, Mandeep Sethi
ENGL 1101 Showcase
When people think of drifting, they usually think about the movie, Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift. This movie ended up spurring a lot of misconceptions on what drifting actually is. Drifting is considered more of an organized legal sport than an illegal underground activity as projected in the movie. A great example of this could be scoped in throughout Georgia, particularly more north of Atlanta.

ENGL 1101 Showcase
Waffle House, as a kid growing up in Gwinnett, brought a different kind of emotion to me, not one of excitement exactly but one of fondness. They were practically everywhere and yet they would always be veiled by the infrastructure around them. The numerous Waffle Houses in my area never seemed to be the same place, not even the food would taste the same depending on who made it, but it made going there better, more unexpected, and less dull. I never really took the time to understand why Waffle House felt so deeply ingrained within my community but now …
Truffle Cakes: A Family Tradition, Sam Haygood
Truffle Cakes: A Family Tradition, Sam Haygood
ENGL 1101 Showcase
What looks to be an ordinary chocolate cake sits unassumingly on a plate, but as the spoon pushes in for the first bite, it cracks through the outer crust of the cake and unexpectedly sinks into the center. Something special is about to come. As the spoon pulls out, the cake appears to be almost melting off the edge, and the prospect of waiting to eat it seems near impossible. This is the experience of my family’s best special occasion dessert, the truffle cake.
Sebastian's Day, Sebastian Tenjo
Sebastian's Day, Sebastian Tenjo
ENGL 1101 Showcase
I started my day hearing something new, it wasn’t my regular alarm, it was different. I had changed the sound of my alarm the night before because the default iPhone alarm has gotten old to me. So, I get up and reach for my phone to turn off this new soothing alarm. I scroll on my phone watching TikTok’s repeatedly for a while until the constant scrolling and different sounds gets annoying and I then play music by Feid to get ready. I make my way down three flights of stairs, walk out the University Village suites, and walk past …

ENGL 1101 Showcase
The numbers on the screen read that it was 8:30. Just a few moments ago I was awoken by a sudden alarm from my phone. I stared at the screen and a scowl formed on my face. I knew that my 8:00 alarm had not awoken me or if the 8:00 alarm even worked. Anyway, I unplugged my grey rectangle from its long, white charger. I sat up in my bed with my brown and orange blanket still covering me. I looked forward towards the wall.

Staying up till 2 AM watching the cricket World Cup might not have been the brightest idea. Who knew that such a decision would unravel into one of the most challenging days of my life, courtesy of the dreadful cold it brought on.
