DURING the absence of our hardworking editor-in-chief this past summer the responsibility of seeing the October issue through the press has devolved upon the advisory editor in literature with the helpful assistance of the editorial board. Lest the substitute appear to be claiming too much, she would like to point out that Professor Cornish left his desk in excellent condition, with a supply of articles and poems already chosen, and it was his idea that there would be a certain appropriateness in publishing a special literary number under the temporary guidance of the literary editor. …

READER reaction is always unpredictable. Some praised the strong concentration on contemporary continental, hemispheric, and world problems in our April issue; others expressed the hope that R. D. Lakin's essay, ''Philosophy and the Missing Purpose," indicated a new editorial direction; still others criticized the limitation of literary criticism to a single article, Richard Rupp's succinct analysis of Hart Crane's masterful treatment of Brooklyn Bridge in his "Atlantis." In the face of wide and uncorrelated demand, the editors have concluded to present a summer issue defying easy categorization. To round our Volume III we present a …

English Language and Literature ETDs
This literary treatment develops the condition of suspended animation which reaches its completion in the Jamesian character in "The Ambassadors" who makes mock-sinister references to a 'product' which he never names. Literature with all its claptrap about the 'vital' issues of love and adventure on the battlefield and in the drawing-room--this ridiculous cud chewed over and over makes me gag. Even the current prattle about 'existence' is an evasion, perhaps the supreme evasion...
The success of an 'embattled style' lies in the poet's ability to sustain generalisation without abstracting it from living experience. A limit of individuation must be transcended …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

WHILE critical comments on our January issue were uniformly favorable and even flattering, the editors were conscious of a sort of unspoken criticism of its rather narrow concentration of subject matter. Certainly Sherwood Anderson, Winston Churchill, William Dean Howells, and William Allen White are all significant figures in American life and letters, but a journal of contemporary thought ought to have more than one article per issue treating current problems. A quick glance at the table of contents of this issue will indicate that THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY is not about to lose its franchise. The …
