Edgar Allan Poe's Criticism Of The Novel, James Gage Aug 1968

Edgar Allan Poe's Criticism Of The Novel, James Gage

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Edgar Allan Poe wrote forty-three critical reviews of novels during the period 1_835 to 1848 that he was associated with the various literary journals in the East. And, although his best known critical works concern themselves with the tale and with poetry, his statements regarding the novel are of sufficient quantity to merit scholarly research. Yet investigation of the major bibliographic sources reveals this to be not at all the case. Thus, this thesis snail endeavor to place some substance in the void of scholarship concerning Poe's criticism lf the novel with the hope that this substance might provide ample …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

DURING TIMES of incessant change any practice or custom that maintains itself for as long as six years may fairly claim to be a hallowed tradition. Just such a tradition THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY is building for itself with this sixth Summer Literary Number. Not that we ever wholly close our pages to a good study of literature at other seasons of the year, and not that our literary number involves any really basic difference from the other three quarterly issues. The emphasis, the approach, may vary somewhat, but all four issues are alike concerned with …

The Scepter's Scale, Inland, Holly Zanville May 1968

The Scepter's Scale, Inland, Holly Zanville

Student Scholarship

The scepter's scale, inland is a collection of modern poetry and prose by Holly Zanville, presented in 1968. The work is characterized by its experimental structure, evocative imagery, and a recurring focus on physical sensations and existential themes. The document is organized into seven major sections, beginning with more abstract and surreal pieces that delve into childhood memories and the creative process.

In the early sections, Zanville uses visceral language to explore themes of identity and perception, often contrasting the mundane with the profound. For instance, a half-yet hour describes a narrator reflecting on a childhood clown and the patterns …
