THIS TENTH Summer Literary Number of ours has been a goodly while in the making. On a tour of our files we discover that some eighteen months ago we were discussing the present issue with Professor PRESTON M. BROWNING, JR., of the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle (but at that time, inconveniently for us, and somewhat to our envy, migrating between a base in France and another in the neighborhood of Oxford). The point was that we very much liked his study of "Hester Prynne as Secular Saint'' but could not promise publication earlier …

"Measured Feet And Jingling Lines" : The Poetry And Poetic Attitudes Of Nathaniel Hawthorne, David L. Evans
"Measured Feet And Jingling Lines" : The Poetry And Poetic Attitudes Of Nathaniel Hawthorne, David L. Evans
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A study of Hawthorne's poetry and poetic attitudes encompasses three separate but integrally related areas. First, few people realize that Hawthorne wrote verse, and no other investigation of the nature and significance of the meager surviving body of this poetry has yet been undertaken. But Hawthorne's failure to create verse of enduring quality is intimately connected with the second part of the study, Hawthorne's own views of 19th century poetry and the motives surrounding his deliberate rejection of poetry as his dominant creative mode. And when his contemporaries glowingly label him as a "poet," despite his strong refusal to write …

THERE ARE LUXURIES no editor can afford, like closing up shop on a balmy spring day with the rationalization that there is nothing new under the sun and of making quarterly magazines there is no end and much writing is a weariness and a vexation of the flesh. To these limited and self-serving truths we are quarterly constrained to oppose the recollection that however little our efforts accomplish we would accomplish nothing if we made no efforts. The fact that our problems are perennial does not let us off the perennial struggle to ameliorate them. …

Time, Nancy Gitomer
Time, Nancy Gitomer
Student Scholarship
The Lindenwood Common Project's Spring 1972 publication features a collection of introspective poetry by Nancy Gitomer titled Time. The work serves as a deeply personal exploration of the human condition, specifically focusing on the cyclical nature of disappointment, the pervasive weight of loneliness, and the struggle for authentic connection. Gitomer organizes the collection through chronological and thematic headers such as Yesterday, Today, Places, Things, and Tomorrow, creating a narrative arc that moves from specific social critiques to broad existential reflections.
In the early sections, the author dissects the artificiality of social rituals, such as proms, which she describes as cold …
