Nps-1, Johanna G. Ziegler

Honors Thesis

NPS-1 is a biopic/political thriller feature-length screenplay that follows the true story of Stephen Mather, a public relations whiz and self-made millionaire who dedicated his fortune to lobbying for the creation of the National Park Service, eventually becoming its first director. Navigating political obstacles on the path to establishing the NPS, Mather struggles to conceal his history with manic depression as his erratic behavior becomes an increasing threat to the success of his campaign. Alongside his reliable but in-the-dark assistant Horace Albright, Mather navigates the ethical minefield that comes with park policymaking: can a push for road development, or border …

Controlling The Narrative: How The United Daughters Of The Confederacy Shaped Collective Memory Through Romance Novels, Karie L. Cobb Apr 2025

Controlling The Narrative: How The United Daughters Of The Confederacy Shaped Collective Memory Through Romance Novels, Karie L. Cobb

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

While existing scholarship on the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) reveals the immense influence the organization wielded in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, I assert that their legacy has had a broader and more insidious reach than previously believed. Through close analysis of two foundational romance novelists’ works published during the rapid escalation of the genre’s popularity, I contend that the rhetoric of the UDC shaped generations of Southerners as demonstrated through repetitions and parallels of the Lost Cause ideology found in UDC publications and sponsored materials within romance novels written by white Southern women who came of age …

Jaded Poison, Taylore Huxford Apr 2025

Jaded Poison, Taylore Huxford

English Theses & Dissertations

Jaded Poison is, at its heart, a modern fantasy love story novel that starts when two different worlds collide. It is a novel in which Evelyn Beaumont receives a bag from her best friend, Jordan. From that point, she soon discovers that the bag teleports things, which starts with her bank statements, to another world—a high fantasy world. The receiver is Valerie Aeris, the Princess of the Valaros kingdom. The two women begin exchanging letters and find solace in each other; Evelyn feels lonely and that her life has no direction, and Valerie feels suffocated in the high society culture …

J.R.R. Tolkien, British linguist and creator of fictional Elvish languages, coined the term glossopoiea to describe the act of inventing languages. In EN5361A Inventing Languages, our group engaged in glossopoiea to develop a constructed language, Theshalshe, based on the fictional culture and environment of Theshrahk Thwath, the Crane Forest.

Theshrahk Thwath is a deciduous forest. The climate is temperate, with four seasons and mild winters. The people observe a monotheistic religion centered around the goddess Kemajthwa, incarnate in an ancient willow tree. They are an egalitarian society arranged with age hierarchy. They are a scientifically advanced and literate people, specializing …

Remembering Ancient Heroes: How Literary Devices Inbeowulf And Homer Assist In Poetic Recollection, Emily Davey Apr 2025

Remembering Ancient Heroes: How Literary Devices Inbeowulf And Homer Assist In Poetic Recollection, Emily Davey

Posters - 2025

In both Ancient Greek and Old English traditions of poetry, memory is an essential part in the retention of the language and story in the culture’s history. Beowulf shares some poetic lyrical elements with Homer’s epithets. Though both poems have unique and different poetic meters, they possess similar tactics in the language to move the story along while providing poets “footholds” in the poem to remember the story. To deliver these stories of heroes to the public, the sophists of Greece and the scops of Celtic England had only one tool available for the record of these lengthy poems: their capacity …
