Weekending In Woolsey, Walter Fulton
Weekending In Woolsey, Walter Fulton
ENGL 1101 Showcase
The sun begins to peak through the blinds, rising over the lake in the backyard. Birds have been chirping for the last 30 or so minutes, and I roll over to grab my phone and check the time. 6:45. I try to get 15 or 30 more minutes of sleep to no avail. I can hear my little brother upstairs running around and figure I will get up to make some breakfast.

Tarot Fabula: Radical Digital Cards, Shuffled Narrative Structures, And Playing The Future In An Era Of Algorithms, Rachel M.L. Dixon
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Since their earliest recorded use in the 1400s, tarot cards figure as objects for game play, artistic creativity, spiritual divination, and self-discovery. Tarot Fabula (https://tarot-fabula.com) introduces a ludic, interactive website interface that challenges 20th century tarot reading practices as linear narratives. Statistically random reshufflings of tarot decks from archival collections prompt the reader to become a narrative co-creator, drawing them into conversation with traditional reading and interpretive practices as they remix narrative elements portrayed on the cards. Tarot Fabula’s shuffling and reshuffling of cards as historical objects merges contemporary computational methods for generating random results with an interrogation of …

While my ancestors migrated here, our ways of cultivating have made a considerable impact on the town. I got to enjoy fresh fruit every morning and vegetables straight from the field. We have always had an abundance of food, so much that we share it with everyone. Everything from the berries and watermelon to beans and cotton. It was a large gathering place for the town as well. Even at this moment, the …

A Day Of Laughter And Friendship, James Hall
ENGL 1101 Showcase
After brushing my teeth and washing my face, I decided to go back into my dark room and click the power button on my Playstation. One of my friends named Greg was texting and calling me saying get on Madden. I decided to start a party chat and invite him so we could talk while playing. When we finally loaded up the game, he invited me and he took a long time trying to figure out if he wanted to pick the white or orange uniform. It was around 9:30 am and it was my first game of the day …

Collective Memory And Creative Subjectivity: A Living Conversation, Alexandra Katherine Goodall, Alba Torres Robinat
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This article is the record of a dialogue between two artists and Expressive Arts therapists, Alba Torres Robinat and Alexandra Katherine Goodall. They chose to undertake this conversation in the form of letters that were written back-and-forth over a period of time in a shared document, which places their correspondence in the tradition of epistolary writing. This decision to write the article as letters lends the conversation an immediacy, a warmth, a sense of time, distance and familiarity, and a feeling of intimacy.

Detroit Poet Laureate: A Local And National Necessity, Rosemary O'Meara
Detroit Poet Laureate: A Local And National Necessity, Rosemary O'Meara
Rushton Journal of Undergraduate Humanities Research
From 1981–2020, Detroit officials appointed a city-recognized poet laureate. Though the position has been vacant since the 2020 death of Naomi Long Madgett, this essay advocates for reinstatement of a Detroit poet laureate to help spotlight important Detroit artists and to ensure that the words and ideas of Detroiters are sustained and celebrated. A poet laureate would continue to uniquely serve Detroit to help preserve its complex history and contribute to a literary canon specific to the city.

Double Consciousness, Mirrors, And The Children Within Them: A Conceptual Reading Of W. E. B. Du Bois's "As The Crow Flies", Adeline Navarro
Rushton Journal of Undergraduate Humanities Research
This research essay argues that W. E. B. Du Bois’s Crow from his magazine column “As the Crow Flies” is a figurative device for double consciousness and examines how aspects of double consciousness are present in the frequent motifs of dialectic doubleness in the column. Drawing from scholar Rudine Sims Bishop, this essay explores how the Crow functions as a mirror that children can use to realize their own double consciousness and thus see themselves. This insight into Du Bois’s news column provides a further understanding of the significance of accessible, multicultural children’s literature.

While reading John D. Roth’s social history of Goshen College, the words of Ecclesiastes 1:9 came to mind: “There is nothing new under the sun.” Goshen’s challenges were (and are) similar to other church-affiliated schools. Concerns about “theological drift,” raised at Goshen a century ago, continue not only there but at other faith-based institutions. A faculty member at my university recently expressed similar worry about losing our faith-centered focus, using the same language of theological drift.
