In the view of FRANK W. SHELTON, E. L. Doctorow's first novel, Welcome to Hard Times, like his later bestsellers, involves an examination of both the unreality and the persistence of the American Dream. Professor of English at Limestone College in South Carolina, Shelton has published numerous articles on modern fiction and drama.
MARCY S. POWELL recounts Thoreau's journeys and finds the denizen of Walden Pond a dedicated observer of America. A traveller of note himself, Powell was until his retirement in 1974 Chairman of the Department of French and Latin at Miami University in …

Three Disappearances, Mari Lonano Polansky
English Theses & Dissertations
Language is the process through which we try to understand each other. As children we develop a sense of denotation; we learn how much better we can talk about the world if we can accurately identify "flower" as a “tulip", for example. Later on, syntax is added to the choices of words we pick and it colors the meaning and depth of what we can say; language is connotative as well as denotative. The complexity and richness of the options while putting together a poem bring us even closer to being able to express and understand ourselves …

Character And Mood In Prose: Nine Original Pieces, Georgianna A. Schroeder
English Theses & Dissertations
This thesis in creative writing consists of both fiction and nonfiction. The fiction section includes three original short stories; the nonfiction, six original mood pieces.
My intention in writing the short stories is to portray the foibles of human nature while preserving the nobility of human character. I believe that all individuals possess the possibilities for good and evil and that their interactions with other individuals and their environments determine the realization of these possibilities in varying degrees.
The mood pieces are drawn from journal entries inspired by observations of life in Tidewater Virginia. The writings, both objective and introspective, …

Kent Nussey received his M.A. in Creative Writing in 1981 from Syracuse University, where he is now a part-time instructor in the English Department. "Listening" is from an unpublished collection of the same name. He is currently at work on a novel. Mr. Nussey is one of the nation's four recipients of the 1983 Wallace Stegner Fellowship for fiction.
