Familiar Stories: Plain-Spoken Poetry From A Missouri Woman, W. Carolyn Smith Jan 1997

Familiar Stories: Plain-Spoken Poetry From A Missouri Woman, W. Carolyn Smith

Theses

This project started as an exercise in a creative writing cluster class. Then I paid a visit to my mother and heard a couple of stories about two nephews that were poignant, yet amusing. I wrote them as I heard them, in conversational style, and the format of my story-poems was born.

The first three chapters cover my background, my training, the influences on my writing, and specifically, examples of three authors whose writing encouraged me to write. The training emphasized factual writing in business communications and journalism. Because of this training, most of the facts in the poems are …

"Childhood And Other Disabilities", Sandra Beauchamp Jan 1997

"Childhood And Other Disabilities", Sandra Beauchamp

Masters Theses

This creative thesis, a collection of personal poetry and critical analysis, explores the experiences of women and children who have grown up in mentally and physically abusive environments, and examines the ramifications such abuse has on their subsequent adulthood. Each poem focuses on one particular individual's struggle to cope with violent or abusive circumstances in her past or present existence. Since the poems are arranged sequentially, mapping a woman's transition from childhood to adulthood, the works deal with various stages in the lives of women. While some of the poetry finds its genesis in my own personal experiences, like the …

Country Of Thieves, Jennifer A. Moro

Masters Theses

Country of Thieves is a collection of poems which examines the many faces of loss through voice and point-of-view. The thirty poems represent devices and techniques employed by American poets from Colonial times up to the present which include Anne Bradstreet, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, T.S. Eliot, Anne Sexton, Elizabeth Bishop and Sylvia Plath. The thesis introduction examines the voices of these poets and the collection demonstrates new viewpoints concerning age-old themes like love, anger and despair.

The introductory essay explores the similarities and differences between my poems and the works of poets already mentioned. These poets each represent different …

Hoarfrost, Mae Lynn Wallker Jan 1997

Hoarfrost, Mae Lynn Wallker

English Theses & Dissertations

Many of the poems in this collection reflect an engagement with an inherited literary tradition of ancient Greek, Latin, and Hebraic mythologies. The first section, entitled "Flint," deals with the ancient text of the Bible and with biblical and religious landscapes. The second section, "'The Seven," based on Aeschylus' The Seven Against Thebes, explores the possibilities of the reinterpretation and elaboration of an ancient story in a contemporary context. While "The Seven" literally refers to the seven gates at Thebes, the number is random, and does in fact represent an infinite number of stories. The penultimate section, "Hoarfrost," explores the …

Overture - Calvino's Mr. Palomar, Charles S. Taylor Oct 1996

Overture - Calvino's Mr. Palomar, Charles S. Taylor

Wine Journey: Tasting Dwelling Learning at The Kitchen Table

This is not a culinary essay. The bread of interest is Scottish, discussed by a philosopher, Hume, whose craft is often ridiculed precisely because it bakes no bread. The archaicallynamed cheese is Parisian; the Italian watercress constitutes part of a salad of Italo Calvino's last protagonist, Mr. Palomar. Still, contrary to appearances, my concern is no picnic. If we think of the pleasure that one can derive from bread, cheese and salad we begin to turn in the right direction. Kant tells us that beauty is determined by the feeling of pleasure in the subject who has become disinterested. Kant …
