This is a creative thesis on a personal experiences working for the European peace movement. It reflects the parallel efforts of working for personal and shared peace in order to contribute to both,
After several years as a reporter, I became disenchanted with my life choices and became an intern with the Catholic peace organization Pax Christi International in Belgium. It was a transition that proved both challenging and rewarding.
While I was discovering the physical peace work through Pax Christi I was also embarking on an inner journey to find personal peace with my decisions and myself.

Fay Weldon's Late Bloomers And Comedy And A Lawyer, A Vet, And A Couple Of Dogs, One Of Them Dead, Susan Rote Siferd
Dissertations
Creative dissertation begins with a critical study of comedy as Weldon employs it in her novels of marriage, infidelity, and divorce. Traditionally, comedy ends in marriage; Weldon's dark comedies end in self-understanding as a necessary prerequisite to growth and possible future relationship. However, Weldon does not celebrate divorce. She recognizes the impact on women's lives of historic period, world events, and their own female nature. An avowed feminist, Weldon yet refuses to blame men for women's problems, but insists that while women struggle against sexism, they often conform to it. If there is no genre designation comparable to "bildungsroman" for …
Boundary Waters, Michael Evan Cowger
Boundary Waters, Michael Evan Cowger
Dissertations and Theses
This collection of poems explores boundaries and migrations, both in the natural world and in human relationships. These poems also consider the role a 'sense of place' plays in poetry, and the ways in which it informs consciousness.
The collection is divided into three sections: Migrations, Boundary Waters, and Flight Pattern. Part one, Migrations, examines developmental stages in the formation of self and in the broader circle of human history. Part two, Boundary Waters, explores familial relationships and traces a movement outward from self, while examining its connection to landscape. (The Boundary Waters Canoe Area is a part of The …

The Growing Quiet On The Evening Train: Poems, Bill Bogart
Dissertations and Theses
Any abstract discussion of poetry must enlist a terminology wholly inadequate to its purpose, which is purportedly to clarify but which often serves to obfuscate or disempower the original language. The terms enlisted here for such purpose are "self" and "other." This collection of poems explores the distances and affinities between the self and others or other-ness. Exploration initiates movement. Because the self cannot arrive at the other, the poems resist finality, but seek to attain an economy of motion and direction that creates tension with a poem's necessity to come to a temporal conclusion. This gathering of momentum is …
Four Square, James Raymond Echtle
Four Square, James Raymond Echtle
Dissertations and Theses
The novel opens with three people in a stolen 300ZX going dangerously fast. There's Kevin Parish, our first person protagonist, through who's eyes we come to learn of the events leading up to the three's desperate situation. There's Hector Malice, the trailer-trash life-long friend and Kevin's rival for the love of Kevin's life, Ginger Lane. Then, there's Ginger, the former Ms. Lewis County turned drug abusing waitress and worse. Revealed are the secrets of the car business and other marginally legal short cons.
The settings range from the fictional rural Washington communities of Pelton and Clark's Bluff to the city …

Seventeen Days In The Cat Bird Seat, Meggin Crom
Dissertations and Theses
Humor and laughter are essential to the happiness of humankind. Too often we are bogged down in the mire of despair and misery, unable to see the humor in our own folly.
This thesis follows several groups of wacky characters on a cross country adventure. The story begins with the death and subsequent reincarnation of the hermetic genius, Archibald Constable. The recently departed recluse bequeaths his estate to Loretta Pontelli, a loudmouth Italian woman, who feels morally obligated to find Archibald's next of kin. Once she discovers a birth announcement she contacts her ex-husband, J.P. Kittenger, a private detective who …

Two Necessities Of Poetry: Plenitude And Exuberance, Marianne Rogoff
Collected Faculty Scholarship
"Alicia Ostriker advocates a 'poetics of ardor,' one which is not detached, objective, or merely intellectual, instead a poetry that embraces a big-hearted and practical definition of what erotic means. Dancing at the Devil’s Party is mostly about women’s poetry but Ostriker also reminds us of the wide-reaching sensuality of Whitman, Hopkins, Keats, and other sexy male forebears who permitted love to appear in their work."
Eyes Of The Mirror, Margaret Jane Emerson
Eyes Of The Mirror, Margaret Jane Emerson
Dissertations and Theses
Eyes of the Mirror is a memoir of transition. Chronologically, it begins with a kind of death in 1996 when the author was forty-eight. Exhausted and disillusioned, she ended her first life as a successful but financially struggling potter, writer, and T'ai Chi instructor. Over the course of twenty-four years, the strain of following a bliss that lay outside of the economy had worn her out. As a first step in the creation of a new life, she earned a certificate in teaching English and accepted a job in South Korea. After two harsh and challenging years there, she returned …

Taking Care Of One's Own, Nicole M. Mazzarella
Taking Care Of One's Own, Nicole M. Mazzarella
English Theses & Dissertations
Set in rural Ohio, Taking Care of One's Own spans nearly forty years of the life of Dottie Connell, who loves this land despite bitterness and hardship. When she takes her best friend's daughter to raise, she must confront her ideas on motherhood, sexuality, and God. Taking Care of One 's Own explores the mysteries of grace, the bargaining of birthright and the power of vows, both those with others and, more influential, those with ourselves.
Dottie raises an adopted daughter and farms her family's four hundred acres in a generation unaccustomed to a single woman in either role. As …

The Narratology Of Jennifer Johnston's Novels, Robert N. Hutton
The Narratology Of Jennifer Johnston's Novels, Robert N. Hutton
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Irish novelist Jennifer Johnston has published twelve novels to date, from The Captains and the Kings in 1972 to The Gingerbread Woman in 2000. Eileen Battersby's recent Irish Times article “Making Sense of Life” called her “the quiet woman of Irish fiction, “ referring to her understated, sophisticated writing style. All of her novels are short (Joseph Connelly and others have called them “novellas”), and she has become known for her ability to describe a complex situation in a direct, compact way.
This discussion is intended to investigate the narratology of several Johnston novels: to explore narrative voice, narrative chronology, …

Life Projects (Chapter 5 Of The Book Between Gay And Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation), Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D.
Faculty Publications
“Life Projects” is Chapter 5 of the book Between Gay and Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation (AltaMira Press, 2001). The timeframe spans from the fall of 1996 to January 1997. I’m taking a course on life history, and I ask a member of my research community, Gordon Bernstein, to participate in my project. During our interviews, Gordon teaches me about the ongoing process of coming out—to oneself, to other gay men, and to coworkers, friends, and family. Later, I grapple with elements of this network of gay male friends that can be unsettling, especially for women. I bemoan its …

Negotiating Academic And Personal Selves (Chapter 4 Of The Book Between Gay And Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation), Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D.
Faculty Publications
“Negotiating Academic and Personal Selves” is Chapter 4 of the book Between Gay and Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation (AltaMira Press, 2001). Here I show how my relationships with the gay men of my research community alter how I position myself in graduate courses, how I practice research, how I write, and how I teach my classes. As a student, I delve into new projects on sexual orientation and identity; as an instructor, I alter course reading lists, assignments, and activities. This chapter also moves through my increasingly problematic encounters with associates who identify as heterosexual. My new consciousness …
