Mcluhan’S Warning, Frye’S Strategy, Emerson’S Dream, Rich Murphy Jan 2006

Mcluhan’S Warning, Frye’S Strategy, Emerson’S Dream, Rich Murphy

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

McLuhan's Warning, Frye's Strategy, Emerson's Dream argues the vital function of literary writing in the academy. The essay maps a road from the warnings of catastrophe by Marshall McLuhan to Emerson's dream of all American citizens being poets through the writing strategies of Northrop Frye. It is argued that what one learns through literary writing is especially important during the crises that are ongoing in the West.

Catholics, Curses, And Cousins In A Cracker Box, Kathryn Wallace Iffrig Jan 2006

Catholics, Curses, And Cousins In A Cracker Box, Kathryn Wallace Iffrig

Theses

In a small sitting room of a mortuary in a rural Missouri town, the author considers the life of her recently departed cousin. Having shared a family home early in their childhood, and despite similar upbringing, their lives had ultimately diverged, with him choosing a path that many would consider self-destructive and bound to lead to an early death.

Contemplating the circumstances of her cousin's death, the author falls into ruminations on their childhood, family, and common experiences they shared during those early years. Considering the disparate paths their lives ultimately took, the author questions the influence of nature versus …

Blessed Are, Jason Martinez Jan 2006

Blessed Are, Jason Martinez

Theses

On the surface this particular novel is a fairly simple one to explain. On the surface this novel is more or less a romance novel. After all, Book One is essentially about a man named Thomas Woods who meets and fall in love with a woman named Rosemary. At first his love is returned in kind, but by the end he has lost his lover to another man, a man unworthy of her tenderness. And Book Two is about more or less the same thing except in this Book the woman's name is Violet, and there is a slight question …

Prairie Suite: A Celebration, Twyla Hansen, Paul A. Johnsgard Jan 2006

Prairie Suite: A Celebration, Twyla Hansen, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

25 poems by Twyla Hansen, with illustrations by Paul A. Johnsgard, including:

Walk on the Prairie

There is mystery here, in the shapes of grass,
in the dim movements of an inland sea,
connections to an earlier time. Wander barefoot,
hypothesize the dance of millennia, the unbearable
carvings of the built environment, this ragtag escape.

Let its divine simplicity ooze into your pores.
Comb the steel from your hair, blanket your
tongue with orange. Your breathing will slow.
Breathing slow, unbutton the child within.
Give her permission to go fly a kite.

Between Continents, Mona Hassan Jan 2006

Between Continents, Mona Hassan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Between Continents is a collection of thirty-two poems. The most challenging aspect of finding the right voice and the appropriate metaphors in "Between Continents" has been the difficulty in assimilating a diversity of traditions within my own work. The polarity of aesthetic values is a well known feature of contemporary American poetry. Charles Webb in his essay on the competing aesthetics in poetry uses the metaphor of apples and orangutans to point out how exaggerated this difference really is. Jorie Graham sees in the way young writers today are simultaneously influenced by elements of poets whose philosophies mutually exclude each …

Crafting Community (Chapter Eight Of The Contented Soul: The Art Of Savoring Life), Lisa Graham Mcminn Jan 2006

Crafting Community (Chapter Eight Of The Contented Soul: The Art Of Savoring Life), Lisa Graham Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Department of Sociology

Excerpt: "Norm Ewert and Sharon Coolidge live simply in an affluent suburb. They are Wheaton College professors committed to caring for the poor around the world. Before she and Norm married, Sharon had purchased a small home a couple blocks from campus. After they married, they expanded and remodeled the 1850s home, using recycled materials (leaded windows from a school, French doors from a church, a carved staircase salvaged from a house fire) and adding a reservoir to capture and reuse rainwater, a solarium with well-placed windows for passive heat, and thick walls for insulation. As Mennonites they live simply …

Behind Blue Eyes: A Memoir Of Childhood Who Am I?: A Collection Of Essays, Glyn Parry Jan 2006

Behind Blue Eyes: A Memoir Of Childhood Who Am I?: A Collection Of Essays, Glyn Parry

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

How should one approach childhood memories for the writing of literary memoir? Behind Blue Eyes is my childhood revisited. I have fashioned my earliest memories in order to tell a story. My story, and the story of my family. It covers the years between 1963 and 1967, when I was a boy growing up in the north-east of England. I made the decision from the outset to tell the story through the eyes of a child. This is an approach seldom taken, but one that has intrigued me for some years now. Could I sustain the voice of a four-year-old, …

Dead Man: And An Accompanying Exegesis: `Labyrinthine Modes In Dead Man And The Castle By Franz Kafka.', Anna Green

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Dead Man is a novella about four brothers. They live an unrestricted life until their mother decides that they lack fear and this lack could make their lives difficult when they are adults. To combat this, she recruits the help of another boy to create a sense of fear and threat that remains endlessly elusive, that will make her sons more wary and alert than she thinks that they would otherwise be capable of. Neuroses always seek their source and Dead Man explores this notion. The source of neurosis for the brothers in Dead Man is a real person; a …

Land Whisperings And A Poetics Of Newplace And Birthplace, Glenly R. Phillips Jan 2006

Land Whisperings And A Poetics Of Newplace And Birthplace, Glenly R. Phillips

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The creative component of this doctoral submission, entitled Land Whisperings, comprises a selection of seventy-five poems, ten short stories and a novella. The connecting theme of this body of work is the emphasis on the landscapes of three continents: Australia, my birthplace, Italy, my wife Rita's birthplace, and China, where I have visited and taught for many years. These locations have also been the subject of substantial research and field experience over the past four years. Since I am an Australian, there is a natural predominance of Australian settings for the poetry and short stories. The selected creative works also …

La Poétique Transgénérique De L’Oeil Et La Nuit D’Abdellatif Laâbi : Du Théâtral Au Filmique Dans Un Roman-Poème, Lucia Trifu

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The study proposes a re-reading, a new interpretation of the novel-poetry work L’oeil et la nuit by Moroccan writer Abdellatif Laâbi. In this literary text, the borders of writing are dismantled and new affinities are revealed between writing, performance, theatre and film; all of which aim to redefine the postcolonial

Entre Intertextualité Et Réécriture, Alexie Tcheuyap

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Aesthetic practices have become more and more diversified in contemporary cultures. Although rewritings and adaptations are most common from literature to film, from myth/epic to novels, African filmmakers have recently been inaugurating novelization, that is the literary rewriting of a film. This essay examines the case of the Algerian filmmaker Merzac Allouache, who has written Bab el-Oued City, based on his film Bab el-Oued, in order to escape the technical and practical limitations of cinema. In doing so, he best expresses the challenges of contemporary Algeria, which is permanently threatened by violence and Islamic fundamentalism.

This article studies the birth and manifestations of the tragic in Ahmadou Kourouma’s fiction. It demonstrates how the tragic in Kourouma’s novels, far from being a metaphysical feeling, stems from social realities and is closely related to the postcolonial system. In these novels, tragedy goes beyond the realistic depiction of catastrophic events and is further articulated in the characters’ political attitudes, their social life and cultural behaviour.

This Minute, Jean Gallagher Oct 2005

This Minute, Jean Gallagher

Poetry

This Minute is a connected whole, in which the verse is driven by strong intellectual excitement, evident in the energetic movement of the lines and in a vocabulary that switches easily from the colloquial to the exact. There is an urgent voice, felt close at hand. And there is a skill in handling and matching the size of a poem to its subject that makes each invigorating to read—one arrives slightly out of breath. These poems convey a “metaphysical” meaning as well as a bodily intimacy. They are luminous, discovering rather than manufacturing their metaphors as the most exact way …
