Rain Town, Melanie Crow Aug 2006

Rain Town, Melanie Crow

Dissertations

My project, a collection of poetry, examines both loss and transformation. Personal loss informs the poems, but the work also addresses how the speaker is accorded insight into the world because of loss and is transformed. The work takes into account mythology, science, and the act of writing in order to understand what it means to live in mutability. Many of the poems demonstrate an acute awareness of the body. Robert Lowell and Jorie Graham are both writers who have informed my poems in this way; both explore a dual consciousness of loss and renewal and both represent moments of …

Hannah Arendt, Boris Diop Et Le Rwanda : Correspondances Et Commencements, Isabelle Favre Jun 2006

Hannah Arendt, Boris Diop Et Le Rwanda : Correspondances Et Commencements, Isabelle Favre

While the social and political sciences account for a relatively large number of books on the 1994 Rwandan genocide, there are still very few literary texts on the subject. Taking Hannah Arendt’s concept of beginning as its point of departure, this article begins with an analysis of the “act of writing” before going on to examine the dynamic interplay between philosophy and literature via Boris Boubacar Diop’s novel Murambi, le livre des ossements (2000).

Doublures, Restes Et Rapports : Les Corps Entre Méconnaissances Et Mises, Jean-Godefroy Bidima

If the body finds a place in our discourse, it is only to justify what we abhor and to provide us with alibis. However, some postcolonial discourses generate misunderstanding via two major omissions: on the one hand, they steer away from a critique of the political economy of the scholar’s own body and its relationship to economic power; on the other hand, they fail to explore what can be said about the body conceived as remains and as residue. One cannot properly conceive of the body as a substance but, rather, as a relation —a relation to what it is …

Femme Nue, Femme Noire : Tribulations D’Une Vénus, Lydie Moudileno Jun 2006

Femme Nue, Femme Noire : Tribulations D’Une Vénus, Lydie Moudileno

This article examines the return, in two contemporary novels, of the figure of the “naked black woman” as an emblematic site of difference. Two women of African origin take back this twice-appropriated figure and use it to question the ways in which the materiality of the body is again being written into contemporary postcolonial society. The aim of the essay is to underline the means and meaning deployed in these new appropriations of African icons, while pointing to some possible limits to the symbolic passage from the colonial imagination to a postcolonial one.

L’Inscription Du Corps Dans Quatre Romans Postcoloniaux D’Afrique, Augustine H. Asaah Jun 2006

L’Inscription Du Corps Dans Quatre Romans Postcoloniaux D’Afrique, Augustine H. Asaah

More and more, contemporary African literature dwells on the body —as the subject and object of desire, as a refuge and as a commodified and objectified victim. Using as reference points four novels —Calixthe Beyala’s C’est le soleil qui m’a brûlée and Femme nue, femme noire, Williams Sassine’s Mémoire d’une peau and Nimrod’s Les jambes d’Alice— all of which inscribe the body onto and into the text, this article seeks to analyse diverse manifestations of the textualized body. Works of alienation and dispossession, these four texts also focus on corporeal quests for equilibrium. The presence of the body in the …

Logos, Eros Y Poiésis: Una Interpretación Sobre El Poema Quejas De Menón Por Diótima De Friedrich Hölderlin, Adriana Renero

Publications and Research

The Promethean, Volume 14, Transformations, 2006, English Department, Concordia University-Portland

The Promethean

The way of the creative works through change and transformation, so that each thing receives its true nature and destiny and comes into permanent accord with the Great Harmony: this is what furthers and what perseveres. -Alexander Pope

Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good, and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

This year we honor our namesake, Prometheus, known in Greek mythology as the patron of human civilization. When presented with the task of filling the earth with …

Interpreting Nature In Australia Through Poetry: A Personal Anthology Written Within The Erosion Caldera Of Northern New South, Kyla Allon Apr 2006

Interpreting Nature In Australia Through Poetry: A Personal Anthology Written Within The Erosion Caldera Of Northern New South, Kyla Allon

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

My Independent Study Project (ISP) involved traveling within the erosion caldera of northern New South Wales, mainly WWOOFing (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) and writing environmental poetry about the places where I lived and worked. I began by researching past Australian environmental poets so that I could have a strong basic understanding before commencing my own writing. I lived in four different locations within the erosion caldera and strove to form a strong sense of place that is reflected in my poetry. Ultimately, I produced an anthology of poems that capture my responses to the natural environments that I experienced. …

In Transit, Kathryn Rhett Apr 2006

In Transit, Kathryn Rhett

English Faculty Publications

There is the birthplace and there is the deathplace. We are in the deathplace. The deathplace is Bad Aibling, in southern Germany, just north of the Austrian border. To get here, we have driven through the Tyrol, the Italian-Austrian-German alpine region in which gingerbread houses stack up on the green slopes of valleys.

Bad Aibling sounds fitting for a deathplace, a bad place, though in fact “bad” means “bath.” As we drive on a two-lane road, we see cars parked in bunches on the grassy shoulder, and it seems people might be bathing, dipping their feet in the country creeks …

Five Wayward Children, Scott Alan Anderson

English Theses & Dissertations

This is a collection of five short stories. Each story presents a character who needs to grow up. That makes five wayward children. In the opening story, a young man learns from a Foreign Exchange student that he must accept his role as a child in order to grow up. The next story presents an old Italian-American matron who has lost her beloved five-foot plaster saint. Through this loss, she learns to cope with the pain of her husband's death and open herself up to the community. The third story features a young military wife in Fort Hood, Texas, who …

In Cowboy America, Michelle Mizal-Archer Apr 2006

In Cowboy America, Michelle Mizal-Archer

English Theses & Dissertations

"In Cowboy America" is just as much a coming-of-age memoir about a young writer as it is about the Filipino-American experience. In 16 chapters I recall memories of family members—Grandmother, aunts, uncles and parents—as well as memories of my own. The stories capture events from my childhood years to marriage. The text also encapsulates family events of the past, before I was even born, and brings them to the forefront to show how they have shaped who I am today: a writer who has chosen a career most Asians, and Asian-Americans in general, have decided not to pursue. The memoir …
