Mourning Eros: Hieroglyphic Love And Loss In H.D.'S Helen In Egypt, Shauna Karine Dorotich
Mourning Eros: Hieroglyphic Love And Loss In H.D.'S Helen In Egypt, Shauna Karine Dorotich
Theses : Honours
H.D. and Lacan both articulate a philosophy of love that exists beyond the sexual relationship. This thesis highlights the concordance between their later writings on love, with a specific focus on Lacan's Book xx; On Feminine Sexuality, the Limits of Love and Knowledge, 1972 - 1973 (Encore), and H.D.'s Helen in Egypt. Initially, I address the paradox of erotic love to explicate the way fantasy results in the death of the woman within the sexual relationship. I then argue that a subject must experience a phase of mourning the fantasy of erotic love in order to progress to …
The Whole Headlight-Colored Night, Matthew Bryan
The Whole Headlight-Colored Night, Matthew Bryan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This collection of short fiction probes the lives of characters trying to make their home in the flat, unchanging landscape of the small towns that make up central Florida. The largely static environment reflects the rigid patterns of behavior and domesticity the characters find themselves so easily falling into. Seemingly ordinary items-a shotgun, a t-shirt, a paper bag-and the small moments that make up everyday life are imbued with significance as men and women painfully aware of their own ordinariness struggle to hold onto those fragile instances of connection, happiness, or even their own self-constructed sense of identity. The struggle …

Shanghai Suite And Other Poems, Glen Phillips
Shanghai Suite And Other Poems, Glen Phillips
Research outputs pre 2011
The Shanghai Suite was written during a two month period in early 2004 while I was a visiting professor teaching a course in 'Western' Culture' at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. This was also part of the research for my PhD in Creative Writing. During and after those months, I composed most of the poems about Shanghai and that region of China...

Idéal Romantique Et Projet Social Dans C’Est Vole Que Je Vole De Nicole Cage-Florentiny, Hanétha Vété-Congolo
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
In this novel, first published in 1998 and then in 2006, martinican female writer Nicole Cage-Florentiny portrays a young woman, Malaïka, who seeks refuge in madness to escape the turmoil of her life. She is under the yoke of harsh living conditions including societal conformism which, according to Fanon, provokes the « existential deviation » (1953 : 31) of the individual. Despite all, Malaïka advocates a society that would integrate all its members and promote equality. C’est vole que je vole aims at brushing Martinique’s ability to display a sound socialization. The author aims at offering a criticism of her …

De La Fiction Criminelle En Afrique. Relecture Des Films D’Ousmane Sembène, Alexie Tcheuyap
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
For institutional, ideological and even sociological reasons, the detective genre had difficulty rising to prominence within literatures and especially within the field of African cinema. If one observes today its shy emergence in the works of some West African film directors and within popular Nigerian video films, it is nonetheless possible, thanks to a finer scrutiny of theories developed on the subject, to realize that some films by Ousmane Sembène contain aesthetic strategies that allow for a fresh assessment of the works of a director whose films were often reduced to their ideological aspects. This second reading also unravels the …

A History Of Nursing, Anne Webster
A History Of Nursing, Anne Webster
KSU Press Legacy Project
Gutsy life experience poems from a nurse-poet who knows "the forces that bend people like trees under a wet spring snow." Read these poems again and again to get the truth -- the whole truth of how her life was and how her life remains. Here in strong poems, is a complex life fully exposed.
The poems in A History of Nursing combine the professional life of a woman in the healing arts with the other aspects of her life. Just as she can never stop being the child of her parents, and adult woman, or a mother, a life …

English Theses & Dissertations
This thesis centers on my Afro-Cuban culture (specifically addressing the experience of being a Black Cuban Woman in America). While the general objective of writing poems address my ancestry, the subject matter of this work can also be seen to alternate between identity and human relationships, between the experiences of being Black and being a woman. The poems are written to resemble the tone and narrative bent of a memoir and serve to make a connection to a larger or more universal experience.
Situated in the geography of this work is a composite of two languages; poems are written in …

In one of his finest poems, "Asphodel, That Greeny Flower," William Carlos Williams writes: "It is difficult / to get the news from poems / but men die miserably everyday / for lack / of what is found there." Earlier, his contemporary, W.H. Auden, had made his famous claim that "poetry makes nothing happen." While the views of the two great modernists appear to be at odds with each other, they are in fact two sides of the same argument, the yin and yang at the center of all true art. For what these poets saw as critical to both …
The Chase, Dwight Mccaulsky
The Chase, Dwight Mccaulsky
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The Chase is a bildungsroman novella that chronicles the challenges that Winston McKenzie faces after he is fired from Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation Television Station. It is a fictional account of Winston's dramatic experiences in overcoming his fears and chasing his dream, with the help of his two childhood friends, during 2007' s Hurricane Dean. Although it is fictional, the story is embedded in research that examines the development, patterns and types of hurricanes, as well as the severity of their impact on the Caribbean islands. The research component of this story serves to strengthen the plot, deepen the characters and …
