Cryptid, Phillip Jarett Underwood May 2010

Cryptid, Phillip Jarett Underwood

Dissertations

Cryptid is a term from the field of cryptozoology, which ostensibly presents itself as the study of creatures that may or may not exist, such as – but not limited to – Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Jersey Devil. The term itself, cryptid, refers to one of these unknown creatures. The novella presented here concerns a half-Native American man and his struggle to know not only his dead parents, but himself and his place in the world. While cryptids play a minor role within the boundaries of the narrative itself, the novella concerns itself more with the ways …

Angel Walking: A Documentary, Jesse F. Garza May 2010

Angel Walking: A Documentary, Jesse F. Garza

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This creative thesis is divided into two parts: “The Critical Introduction” & “Angel Walking: A Documentary Screenplay.” In the “Critical Introduction to Angel Walking: A Documentary” I define the modes used and how similar documentaries and movies have helped me formulate a stronger story to showcase cerebral palsy from a 12 year old Latino’s perspective. I discuss how filming the documentary was an engaging process and led me to find a connection with the subject. This leads to how the development of writing the screenplay is somewhat of a “backward-process.” Therefore, the second half of this creative thesis is the …

Between Silver And Glass, Catherine V. Lopez May 2010

Between Silver And Glass, Catherine V. Lopez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The critical introduction explores my stories, as well as my influences, and ultimate desires for said stories. The stories themselves explore a variety of topics. They are stories about growing up. They are stories about being a girl. They are stories about the magical world we live in. They are the sort of stories I'd like to read if I ever have free time again.

The Oval

College has its own culture, jargon, and rituals much like a country. We only live in this country for four years, but when we want to revisit, we do not have yearbooks, nor can we keep every weekly Kaimin newspaper. The Oval, a literary magazine with stories, visual art, and poetry captures themes, emotions, and memories experienced at college that a record-book cannot. In the third edition of The Oval, we hear a variety of voices speaking of unique experiences, but they all come from the same country—they’re University of Montana undergraduates.

What Ties Me To Blue Mountains, Deborah Lynne Downs Apr 2010

What Ties Me To Blue Mountains, Deborah Lynne Downs

English Theses & Dissertations

This thesis includes a collection of poems and a foreword discussing individual poems, the relationship of the poems as a collection, important themes, and concerns of craft. These poems comprise a narrative of place developed chronologically and are grounded in the context of regional storytelling and oral histories specific to Southwestern Virginia during roughly the first two thirds of the Twentieth Century.

History Has My Name examines culture, language, and geography—those things particular of place. In a larger social and cultural context this manuscript also focuses on the position of women and issues of racism within its stated time frame. …

I Have To Tell You Something, Edmund E. Dowe Apr 2010

I Have To Tell You Something, Edmund E. Dowe

English Theses & Dissertations

The poems of I Have to Tell You Something will hopefully invoke the spirit of duende, that city of sinister images Federico Garcia Lorca so passionately described. They are my attempt to make sense of the reality I wake to everyday, and they are a challenge to my perception and my audience's perception of the realities that have been created by the technological and digital machine of the 20th and 21st centuries. In these pages is a collection of highly imagistic poems, reminiscent of the imagist poetry of the late 1960s and early 1970s. They live by the …

Other People's Houses, David Williamson Apr 2010

Other People's Houses, David Williamson

English Theses & Dissertations

The stories in this collection concern the suburban demography as an American landscape, as unique as Manhattan or the West Coast or the Mississippi River or the Arizona desert, with its own lore, mythos, and expectations. These stories attempt to retell those myths and ask why expectations fall short, when they do.

These stories are similar in their exposition and context: male viewpoint characters who live in middle class neighborhoods and communities and spend their days battling anxiety and paranoia and fear and mystery and confusion. Each story represents a piece of suburbia and how a specific landscape and culture …

The Way Of Sinners, Mary Westbrook Apr 2010

The Way Of Sinners, Mary Westbrook

English Theses & Dissertations

The Way of Sinners is a collection of short stories united by place and themes. The stories, most of which are told in first-person, take place in fictional and real towns around Virginia, in Tidewater, the Shenandoah Valley and the western part of the commonwealth, near Blacksburg. The stories concern women and girls who feel they have failed, who fear they cannot be redeemed. The characters want to be restored to dignity — to be whole again, good. Human nature stands in their way. The characters are keenly aware of slights and sins committed by and against them, and as …

Shelter: Stories Of The Tragic And Joyful Young Men Of A South African Shelter, Jesse Scaccia

English Theses & Dissertations

Shelter tells the story of the writer's nine months spent volunteering at a home for young men in Cape Town, South Africa. It focuses on the themes of manhood and masculinity, dignity as a found concept, self-realization through travel, modern colonialism and the first world/third world relationship, and the meaning of volunteering, for both the individual and those being "helped."

Requiem For The Orchard, Oliver De La Paz Feb 2010

Requiem For The Orchard, Oliver De La Paz

University of Akron Press Publications

These are vivid, visceral poems about coming of age in a place “where the Ferris Wheel/ was the tallest thing in the valley,” where a boy would learn “to fire a shotgun at nine and wring a chicken’s neck/ with one hand by twirling the bird and whipping it straight like a towel.” Looking back, the poet wrestles with the meaning of labor in the apple orchards and “the filthy dollars we’d wad into our pockets,” or the rites of passage that included sinking a knife into the flank of a dead chestnut horse. In spite of such hardscrabble cruelties—or …

A Floating World: Stories, Karen Best Jan 2010

A Floating World: Stories, Karen Best

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A Floating World is a collection of short stories inspired by fairy tales. Often set in worlds where the mundane and the fantastic come together, these stories explore moments of strangeness that slip beyond the bounds of realist fiction. Fantastical events intrude into mundane reality as characters attempt to reconcile the known with the unknowable.

We Will Make Your Head Explode, Jaclyn Sullivan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We Will Make Your Head Explode is a collection of short fiction stories that explore themes of friendship, family, love, lust, jealousy, loyalty, and disappointment. A son is forced to decide whether or not to honor his mother's final wishes. A college student is blind to her brother's evolution beyond their family. A woman discovers new possibilities while stalking graveyards to escape the memory of a man who left …

Potential Energy, Edward Bull

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Potential Energy. (Under the direction of Pat Rushin.) Potential Energy is a collection of sixteen short stories. They range from the fictional to the autofictional to the entirely non-fictional. In all of them, characters both real and imagined struggle to live and define themselves in a world that is outside their control. They cope with the inevitability of loss, dangers both internal and external, and the passing of their own greatness. Some of these characters become lost while others learn to embrace life on its own terms'to accept 'without hope or expectation.' More often, they are not lost or enlightened, …
