Desperate Not To "Forget The Gods": Mormon Fantasy And The Epic Poem, Gerrit Van Dyk Jan 2012

Desperate Not To "Forget The Gods": Mormon Fantasy And The Epic Poem, Gerrit Van Dyk

Faculty Publications

Because of humanity's fixation on death, religion and the afterlife have played a part in human culture throughout history. As a result, belief, religion, and theology have been central to the main action of stories since the earliest forms of literature. One of the greatest ancient literary genres, the epic, is no exception.

Epics have many universal characteristics, such as elevated language in poetic form, vast settings, and strong protagonists who demonstrate feats of great strength and genius. They also commonly contain "supernatural forces-gods, angels, and demons-[who] interest themselves in the action" (Harmon and Holman 185). After the Renaissance, the …

Outings In The Queer South: Representations Of Male Homosexuality In The Short Fiction Of Eudora Welty, Ramona Wanlass Jan 2012

Outings In The Queer South: Representations Of Male Homosexuality In The Short Fiction Of Eudora Welty, Ramona Wanlass

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates Welty's four short story collections and treats the stories as separate entities that are intimately connected to each other by a theme that evolves over and yet transcends the forty odd years that seem to separate them--namely Welty's theme of male homosexual desire. I will examine Welty's story collections using a theoretical framework that incorporates a history of homosexuality in the South and investigates such themes as travel, identity, reactions to heterosexual coupling, and traces Welty's own experiences through the experiences of her fictional male characters. Welty's work spans several decades but in a discussion of her …

Online Theses and Dissertations

The writing of the novel as a creative thesis in American literature was a special project approved by the English department of Eastern Kentucky University. Beyond the university's departmental requirements in the course of study for a a Master of English in American literature, I did an independent study of creative writing texts recommended by the creative writing department at Easter Kentucky University. I attended three summer workshops at the Hindman Settlement School Writer's Workshop, Hindman, Kentucky, with classes under professors/authors Robert Morgan, Gurney Norman, Lee Smith and other noted others. My undergraduate study of the English novel and my …

Trade Secrets, Rachel Kolman Jan 2012

Trade Secrets, Rachel Kolman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Trade Secrets is a collection of fourteen short stories that explores characters falling in and out of relationships and coping in unusual and even comedic ways. These characters are often obsessive and do not trust one another. They think life is funny, and discover that love is funny, and yeah, sex can be funny too. They don’t feel the right things when they’re supposed to. They find love, and lose love. They find hope, and lose hope. They escape sometimes, but more often are unable to go anywhere. These stories consider relationships through the disconnection between reality and fantasy, exploring …

Hidden Variable, Heather Harms Jan 2012

Hidden Variable, Heather Harms

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hidden Variable is a novel that blends linear storytelling with the novel-in-stories form. It poses questions about the nature of identity as well as the feasibility of personal power, particularly with respect to disorders of the mind. Darla Pierson, the novel’s protagonist, is a woman in crisis. She is steeped in selfloathing brought on by the knowledge that she has, in effect, become her dead father—a genius with an epic libido, habitually using and discarding people. Her father has another habit that Darla doesn’t share: being struck by lightning. After the second strike kills him, Darla makes a conscious attempt …

The Boys' Republic, Jonas Mueller Jan 2012

The Boys' Republic, Jonas Mueller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The young men in The Boys’ Republic live in a world that is continually falling apart. Their houses collapse into sinkholes, forest fires carve out chunks of their towns, plague spreads through their communes, the money runs out on the construction project where they work. This decay mirrors their own collapsing identities, as they are forced to question their mastery of nature, their nostalgia for their youth, their relationships with others, and the value of masculinity itself. Drawing on the work of writers like Dennis Cooper, Flannery O’Connor, and Benjamin Percy, The Boys’ Republic depicts men in the midst of …

Before Words, There Were Leaves: A Collection Of Poems, Jason Bradford Jan 2012

Before Words, There Were Leaves: A Collection Of Poems, Jason Bradford

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The poems in this thesis explore ideas of habitation, animality, humanity, community, and the inevitable disconnection experienced by the lack of communication between the interior and exterior. These poems attempt to construct the in between. The "I" character of these poems lives with several animals and insects throughout the sequence of these poems. The "I" character identifies something valuable in these beings, something unknowable outside the realm of physical coexistence. The same can be said of the animals, who seem to find comfort, sustenance, and kinship with the "I" character. The "house" becomes a blending of the interior and exterior, …

Mind The Gap : An Examination Of The Pause In Modern Theatre; And, Shadows : A Play (Major Creative Work); And, Bank Accounts : A Collage Of Monologues (Minor Creative Work), John L. Pratt Jan 2012

Mind The Gap : An Examination Of The Pause In Modern Theatre; And, Shadows : A Play (Major Creative Work); And, Bank Accounts : A Collage Of Monologues (Minor Creative Work), John L. Pratt

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Both as a student of theatre and, eventually, as a professional practitioner, it has long been apparent to me that there is a dearth of reference material on what has become one of the modern theatre’s most important elements: the pause. Actors, directors and playwrights can only interpret the word ‘pause’ according to their own experience and its meaning remains nebulous, even after agreement has been reached in a specific context. The essay, Mind The Gap, examines the significance of the pause to these various practitioners. It suggests, with examples, close analysis of the purpose of each pause, differentiation of …

Swamp : Walking The Wetlands Of The Swan Coastal Plain ; And With The Exegesis, A Walk In The Anthropocene: Homesickness And The Walker-Writer, Anandashila Saraswati Jan 2012

Swamp : Walking The Wetlands Of The Swan Coastal Plain ; And With The Exegesis, A Walk In The Anthropocene: Homesickness And The Walker-Writer, Anandashila Saraswati

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This project is comprised of a creative work and accompanying exegesis. The creative work is a collection of poetry which examines the history and ecology of the wetlands and river systems of the Swan Coastal Plain, and which utilises the practice of walking as a research methodology. For the creative practitioner walking reintroduces the body as a fundamental definer of experience, placing the investigation centrally in the corporeal self, using the physical senses as investigative tools of enquiry. As Rebecca Solnit comments in her history of walking, ‘exploring the world is one of the best ways of exploring the mind, …

Experimenting With The Future: Born Magazine, Multimedia, And The French Avant-Garde, Anmarie Trimble, Jennifer Grotz Jan 2012

Experimenting With The Future: Born Magazine, Multimedia, And The French Avant-Garde, Anmarie Trimble, Jennifer Grotz

University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Born is an experimental online magazine that brings together writers and "new media" designers and artists, who have collaborated to create multimedia interpretations of poetry (and more rarely, short prose). As editors of one of the earliest, enduring literary publications on the Web, we often receive invitations to share our “vision” of Web poetics, literary multimedia, et cetera. This presents a problem—Born evolved without consciously intending to even focus on poetry (only our current incarnation), but rather with an intent to be a creative, collaborative community. As such our work and vision are shaped as much by the interests of …
