Red Rose, Sara Lauren Purifoy

Red Rose follows the narrator’s innermost thoughts and feelings of abruptly being immersed into a culture very different from her own. While hiking with her brother, a second year environmental Peace Corps volunteer, to visit the home and garden of a Nicaraguan native, she reflects on the changes she sees in her brother and her inability to communicate in a foreign country. She struggles to overcome her feelings of linguistic isolation while still being fascinated by the culture around her. The piece ends on a lovely image of universal understanding.

This nonfiction essay investigates the relationship between eye contact and power in different situations. It brings up the idea that animals and humans are less different than often thought to be, and how body language is transcendent. It uses this underlying theme to investigate the author’s changing relationship with her father.

This is a memoir piece that details a tumultuous period in my life between departing for my study abroad experience in Rwanda and Uganda, struggling with what I encountered there, and then attempting to reintegrate into the same life prior to my departure. Specifically, it focuses on my time in northern Uganda, and a women I met in an IDP (internal displaced persons) camp who really made me think about what my role should be both there and at home. This piece explores a number of themes including guilt, blame, and, ultimately, a certain amount of forgiveness.

Lowrider, Phil Quam
Lowrider, Phil Quam
English Theses & Dissertations
Lowrider is a collection of interlinking short stories, adding up to a novelistic whole, which follows man in his late-20s, who is left paralyzed after a motorcycle accident. Set primarily in a Virginia Beach nursing home, but also in various locales around that city, the protagonist, nicknamed Youngblood by the members of his wheelchair gang, attempts to rehabilitate himself while confronted with the realities of age and isolation. Several themes are explored, including identity, love, permanence and transience, physical and emotional paralysis, and, ultimately, self-acceptance. The stories also aim to depict aspects of young adult life in America, when societal …
Hush, Valerie Wilkinson
Hush, Valerie Wilkinson
English Theses & Dissertations
Hush explores the rural Pennsylvania landscape in seven short stories that strive to slice the characters open and take a brief, brutal look inside. Teenagers lounge on rocks and rattlesnakes twist in cages. Rivers freeze and houses speak. A hunter loses his family and a basketball star loses his shot. And a young girl learns about sex amidst a minefield of guilt and abuse. Story to story, the characters harbor secrets and shame as they search for forgiveness, for redemption, and for some precious measure of grace.

From Ecological Creativity To An Ecology Of Well-Being: ‘Flows & Catchments’ As A Case Study Of Nvivo, Dr Brad Warren, Dr Patrick West
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
This paper’s research question concerns how the ecological creativity of the Volcanic Plains region of Western Victoria may be transformed into an ecology of well-being of benefit to the local community. Drawing on the philosophies of Spinoza and Gilles Deleuze, we argue that community well-being results from the richness of connections and relationships made within a place. The case study for our investigation is ‘Flows & Catchments’, which is an ongoing, collaborative, creative-arts research project auspiced by Deakin University. Its modus operandi is Practice-Based Research (PBR), and its aim is to promote community well-being in Western Victoria. However, while the …
The River In A Landscape Of Creative Practice: Creative River Journeys., Kylie J Stevenson
The River In A Landscape Of Creative Practice: Creative River Journeys., Kylie J Stevenson
Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
In my current PhD study, Creative River Journeys, I use the metaphor of the river as a data capture tool when interviewing artist-researchers about their experiences of conducting creative practice within a university context. My use of the river functions as a metaphor for the creative process. I have adapted the River Journey tool from its previous use as a map of teacher identity and professional development, and in a project about children’s musical experience. This PhD project follows a long tradition of using the river as a metaphor. For example, the river has been used in a narrative therapy …
Phantom Islands A Collection Of Short Stories, Marie Buckner
Phantom Islands A Collection Of Short Stories, Marie Buckner
Dissertations and Theses
This collection of short stories takes its name from various islands historically believed to exist and at one time or other located on maps, sometimes remaining on them for centuries, but later removed after they were proved to be illusory. Reports of these islands usually came from sailors as they explored new realms, mistaking actual islands for imaginary ones or by geographical error. Illusions can persist unchallenged for ages. A similar yet modern illusion is the persistence of vision, a phenomenon by which an afterimage, say, on a screen, is thought to persist on the retina for approximately one twenty-fifth …

This paper is a collection of my personal experiences with the Welsh culture, both as a celebration of heritage in America and as a way of life in Wales. Using my family’s ancestral link to Wales as a narrative base, I trace the connections between Wales and America over the past century and look closely at how those ties have changed over time. The piece focuses on five location-based experiences—two in America and three in Wales—that each changed the way I interpret Welsh culture as a fifth-generation Welsh-American. Each travel experience contains characters, places, and interactions that shape my conception …

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language
Terra nullius is a Latin expression deriving from Roman law meaning „land belonging to no one‟ or no man's land. The concept was used in international law to describe territory which has never been subject to the sovereignty of any state, or over which any prior sovereign has expressly or implicitly relinquished sovereignty. Implying an empty land, a land with no people, land as property with no owner, terra nullius is possibly the greatest legal travesty and fabrication ever enacted on an invaded people. This paper will attempt to make a little sense of what and why this has happened …
