Volumes, Matthew Brooks Stark May 2014

Volumes, Matthew Brooks Stark

Theses and Dissertations

Volumes is a book-length work of poetry in three parts. Volumes investigates the process of art, wherein the creative act constructs both the created object and its creator the artist. I use the term "creation" rather loosely: I propose such an act to be present within one's self-recognition, imaginative contextualization of oneself within a setting, or performance of a role. Volumes, through Ars Poeticas, struggles with ideas of self-awareness, wherein the artist achieves a unique determinacy before and after a creative act because the artist is necessarily changed by the act of creation. The project struggles against the opaqueness of …

Winter Evening, Donald Rider May 2014

Winter Evening, Donald Rider

Manuscripts

As the year evolves, nature contemplates, nature broods, nature rants, and nature breathes the warm glow of spring. She may brood the noisy thunderstorm of summer, rant the early autumn squalls, and whisper with zephyrs the heralding of spring, but tonight she contemplates. Tonight she contemplates and her utter silence pervades the hunter's cabin.

Rubber And The War, Mildred Reimer May 2014

Rubber And The War, Mildred Reimer

Manuscripts

We walk on it, ride on it, wear it, and use it in our pastimes. We make use of it for comfort and safety. We see it everywhere. Much of it that is used is hidden from us under silk, cotton, or steel. This popular product can be made to stretch ten times its length or treated so that it will not stretch at all. It can be spun so fine that it resembles a spider's web or made so lasting that it will outwear steel. It can be made to withstand hot or cold temperatures, to absorb water or …

Evolution, Jeanne Gass May 2014

Evolution, Jeanne Gass

Manuscripts

Lora Tiptoed across the bedroom stepping gingerly from one rug to another, avoiding the chilling touch of the hardwood floor. She fumbled in the closet and finally slipped her cold feet into sensible blue leather house-slippers. The heels clicked softly on the hall floor. She raised the window shade in the bathroom, and the half-light of the early morning added cheerless rays to the cold room. Lora gasped at the shock of cold water on her face, and her hands shook as she drew curlpins from her hair. She combed her hair hurriedly, and its electricity bristled about her shoulders …

Wilderness, Kathryn E. Bucolo May 2014

Wilderness, Kathryn E. Bucolo

Celebration

The collection of short stories I have written focuses on how people process (or do not process) tragedy, especially as related to themes of grief, memory, and faith. Most of the stories I have written are dysfunctional narratives in that they do not necessarily provide solid conclusions or solutions for the characters or readers, reflecting current trends in literature to move away from the didactic and moralistic in favor of the ambiguous and unstable, the hopeless and sorrowful. In "Wilderness", one of the pieces I wrote for my collection, Robert struggles with the death of his wife when he realizes …

Gender And Self-Representation In Maya Angelou's Autobiography I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings 2014, Jay-Nel Steitz May 2014

Gender And Self-Representation In Maya Angelou's Autobiography I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings 2014, Jay-Nel Steitz

Master's Theses

A voice that has been silenced for so long has much to say. Whether still confined or set free, the statement applies equally to both. The silenced voice wants not only to tell his or her story, but to share the life experiences which in turn reveal the identities of these individuals. These silenced voices then are not those of the oppressors, but the oppressed; and when an oppressor wants to share his or her story, the oppressed wants to tell their side of it as well. How can those labeled the marginalized outcasts of society express their feelings and …

Twelve Rules For Drinking, Kevin Mcwilliams Coates May 2014

Twelve Rules For Drinking, Kevin Mcwilliams Coates

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Prohibition had an unexpected side effect: writers who wanted to see themselves as creative nonconformists began to flaunt their relationship with alcohol, adopting the persona of the charmingly and recklessly defiant individualist. Alcohol has been imagined as the writer’s muse and has assumed a prominent role in countless works of fiction. My culminating project is a collection of stories and poetry with that common thread: alcohol. Borrowing from the Humanist Alternative of the Alcoholics Anonymous Twelve Steps, the collection is arranged into twelve sections, each headed by and inspired by a step in the program. My intent is not to …

The Promethean, Volume 22, Deeper Roots, 2014, English Department, Concordia University-Portland

The Promethean

Every year, the staff of The Promethean strives to compile a magazine that tells the story of a greater group of writers. Though all are different, they write about a greater Truth.

This year, we decided to inspire the writers by taking a quote from an American legend, Dolly Parton.

"Storms make trees take deeper roots."

Pain and sorrow are among the stronger of emotions and a great equalizer among all people. Though sorrow makes for mournful works, it is through the hardships and pain that we are better able to experience the goodness that the world has to offer. …

The following manuscript deals with a range of themes including origin, family, place, gender, sexuality and their intersections. The title, Combining the Names of Ancestors with the Names of Birds, and title poem exemplify the intersection of origin, family, place (ancestors) and gender, sexuality, movement, change and freedom (birds). Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear, Jean Ho May 2014

Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear, Jean Ho

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The short stories in this collection move between two women, Fiona and Jane, who were close friends as teenagers but drift apart in their twenties. The women find each other again, later in life, and ease into an unsettled truce. As a writer I am interested in questions of gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity; in these stories, I have tried to explore the intersections of these identities through Fiona and Jane's lives in Los Angeles and New York, and the histories of their families in Taiwan.

All Is Ripe For Fire, Dana Marie Killmeyer May 2014

All Is Ripe For Fire, Dana Marie Killmeyer

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

All is Ripe for Fire is a two-part lyrical meditation that captures the world of the unnamed speaker who is visited by the image of a woman, such as the one who appears in the very first poem, "The Unnamed," which begins with an invitation to reader: "Let us look at the French woman's hand touching the flame to her sleeve." However, no sooner is the reader's attention drawn to the woman's hand, the flame, and then to her sleeve, than the image of the woman is gone entirely. In a matter of a few words, the figure of the …

Islam, Sacrifice, And Political Theology In John Milton's Samson Agonistes, Renee Marvin May 2014

Islam, Sacrifice, And Political Theology In John Milton's Samson Agonistes, Renee Marvin

HIM 1990-2015

A shift in gaze has occurred in the study of the early modern period, one which has begun to examine the Western world in a more global and comprehensive context. This shift has been extensively written upon with regards to a historical consideration by researchers like Nabil Matar, Jeremy Brotton, Gerald MacLean, and others. This “re-orientation”, as MacLean calls it, has extended itself into the realm of literature studies, though Shakespeare and his works have been the focus of much of the scholarship circulating today. While the Bard has much to tell us, in the spirit of this expansion my …

All The King's Horses, Christopher Caruso May 2014

All The King's Horses, Christopher Caruso

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

All The King’s Horses juxtaposes the struggle of artistic creation alongside the trauma of 9/11. This collection of poetry presents the failure of language and art to define the boundaries of anxiety’s origins. Aware of these limitations the “I” in this poem struggles to find a reprieve in defining something that cannot be defined.
