Writing Together: An Arendtian Framework For Collaboration, Jessica Restaino Oct 2014

Writing Together: An Arendtian Framework For Collaboration, Jessica Restaino

Department of Writing Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This essay considers the long-standing challenges, in both practice and theory, to collaborative writing in the first-year classroom. I argue that Hannah Arendt’s concepts of plurality and natality are useful frameworks for thinking constructively and practically about teaching argumentative writing through collaboration. I explore these concepts in terms of foundational scholarship on written collaboration, such as Candace Spigelman’s work on writing groups and intellectual property, as well as recent considerations of evolving technological resources (Howard). Ultimately, thinking through Arendt, I offer examples from my own classroom practice, and also generate a series of questions designed to support instructors’ incorporation of …

Land Whisperings: Poems And Palimpsests, Glen Phillips Oct 2014

Land Whisperings: Poems And Palimpsests, Glen Phillips

ECU Books

Most of the poems in this book were included in the poetry section of my PhD in Creative Writing in 2006 under the title of “Land Whisperings: a Poetics of Newplace and Birthplace”. A theme of the thesis was ‘palimpsest’ the rendering of a new work over the top of an older one. Some of the poems therefore take skeletal forms from well-known British and Australian poems yet are new poems created upon the old. The poems also evoke my memories and experiences of my homeland, particularly the Wheatbelt of Western Australia but also landscapes of Italy and China in …

Borrowed Time, Alicia Defonzo Oct 2014

Borrowed Time, Alicia Defonzo

English Theses & Dissertations

This non-fiction narrative/memoir seeks to explore how war impacts soldiers as well as future generations. Borrowed Time predominantly focuses on Del, Alicia's grandfather, and his battles through World War II as well as life before and after the war.

After a chance visit to Utah Beach in Normandy, France, Alicia travels through Europe attempting to retrace her grandfather's journey through the war. The bond with her grandfather and the power of the historical site leads her to realize she knows little about her hero or the war itself. She returns to her grandfather and seeks the truth, which until then …

Brought to the US from Peru as a young child, Diana Delgado discovers that she is fated to be ni de aqui ni de alla¸ neither from here nor there, eternally straddling two worlds. As her high school career draws to a close, she is forced out of both secrets in the worst way possible.

Dreamers: Stories, Eddie Wayne Malone Aug 2014

Dreamers: Stories, Eddie Wayne Malone

Dissertations

The short stories in Dreamers explore American masculinity in the twenty-first century. They also examine and complicate Asian-American identity at a time when decades-old stereotypes persist in the culture. In the title story, a war veteran returns home from Afghanistan to find an American landscape that has the feel and texture of a terrible dream. In other stories, men fixate not on women but on each other. In “Still Life,” the middle-aged main character is preoccupied with a friend who died over fifteen years ago. The main character in “At War with the Insects” pursues a man who was both …

Hotel Bukovyna, Rebecca Ann Bosshart Aug 2014

Hotel Bukovyna, Rebecca Ann Bosshart

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This collection of short stories and first chapter of a novella take place in the historical area of Bukovyna, the beech tree land, partly located in Chernivetska region, western Ukraine. On the edge of it, or under it, or traveling to and from it, in contemporary time. I've been occupied with "the outsider," represented here, and where the seven stories reside, by the giant grande dame tourist hotel on Main Street, across from Shevchenko Park, in Chernivtsi, the region's city center. The occupants: the outsider looking in and around. Outsiders looking at other outsiders. An outsider being welcomed in. Most …

Where I Belong, Joy E. Weitzel Aug 2014

Where I Belong, Joy E. Weitzel

All NMU Master's Theses

This project compiled research of my family history to present an honest and creative portrayal of my family’s journey, connecting the stories of my ancestors to the common struggle, movement, and growth of humanity. The Duckworth’s were farmers who came to West Virginia from Maryland in the 1830s. Five pieces follow the course of the Duckworths, who witnessed the growth of industrialism, the toils of migration, the extension of the B&O railroad, and the eruption of the American Civil War. The lives described in this thesis are the patriarchs of the Duckworth family, beginning with Henry Duckworth migrating to West …

Seasonal Roads, Lynn K. Fay

All NMU Master's Theses

Lynn Kimball Fay has been publishing for twenty-five years under the pen-name L. E. Kimball.
As a writer, I’m interested in the way Truth seems to me—intuitively—nonlinea. I’m interested in story cycles that examine Truth from different points of view, usually nonlinearly; and I’m interested in the way setting reveals Truth and how it reveals character. I’m interested in Faith—a kind that is not irreconcilable with science, the kind it takes to put that foot in front of the other.
The kind we have in one another.
I have always, therefore, been fascinated with layers of Time, the nonlinear and …

ABSTRACT

DISASTER SALSA

By

Linda A. H. Sirois

Disaster Salsa is an interrelated collage of essays, poems, letters, recipes, and stories that are juxtaposed to tell a narrative of what it is like to be the mother of a child who struggles with mental disorder. Our oldest son has had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) all his life; at the age of 11 he was struck with a baseball bat, which resulted in a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Services that address, diagnose, and treat mental disorders have been abysmal for many years in parts of our country, and ten years ago …
