Now & Then: The Appalachian Magazine, Volume 30, Issue 02, published in 2015. The theme of this issue is The Best of 30 Years, Part I. This issue presents the first part of a retrospective collection, drawing from selected works published between 1984 and 1999 to revisit major themes in Appalachian studies. It brings together essays, interviews, and narratives that reflect on topics such as health, place, and cultural tradition, community leadership, labor activism, media, religion, and humor, illustrating the breadth of concerns that have shaped the magazine's earlier volumes. The Dead Rise The Dead And Walk Among The Living: An Examination Of The Haunting South, Queerness, And Grotesqueries In Truman Capote's "Other Voices, Other Rooms" And "Local Color", Jordan Alexis Savage Jan 2015

The Dead Rise The Dead And Walk Among The Living: An Examination Of The Haunting South, Queerness, And Grotesqueries In Truman Capote's "Other Voices, Other Rooms" And "Local Color", Jordan Alexis Savage

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project is conceptualized through a multitude of intersecting and overlapping theories that work together to allow an examination of circulations and intersections of queerness, grotesqueries, and the haunting South. Throughout this reading of Truman Capote’s Other Voices, Other Rooms and Local Color I want to think through the ways in which images and moments in the text can be queer and grotesque while also lending themselves to the images and eruptions that make up the haunting South. My reading of grotesqueries and the haunting South purposefully moves away from the Southern Gothic, rooting itself instead in a space that …

Black Skies And Gray Matter, Jacquelyn Bennett Jan 2015

Black Skies And Gray Matter, Jacquelyn Bennett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Black Skies and Gray Matter is a collection of stories thematically centered on characters that are lonely or lost in the world. These stories explore the characters' personalities through their interactions with others (strangers, family, friends, and spouses) and the difficulties they face being misunderstood. Their journeys are ones of trying to find happiness and their place in society (or rejecting it). As they face alienation, they must endure the trials of everyday life (some more extreme than others) and, at the same time, search for kindred spirits, a sense of belonging. Some stay true to themselves while others conform …

Instant Conductors, Mary Petralia Jan 2015

Instant Conductors, Mary Petralia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Instant Conductors is a collection of poems meant to engage the reader in conversation about the imperfect nature of the world in relation to the imperfect nature of readerly experience. Walt Whitman wrote, “I have instant conductors all over me whether I pass or stop / they seize every object and lead it harmlessly through me.” And so the things on these pages are intent on transmitting what one experiences in the minutiae of memory and routine: the sounds that surround a blackwater tidepool, what one imagines happens behind the closed doors of the friendly neighbors, or what's heard in …

Branded Cowboy, Meredith Doench

“Here is a moving story of a transgender man whose roots reach deeply into the dust of West Texas. He must choose between the woman he loves and the life he has made on his family’s ranch as a cowboy. I was impressed with how the writer chose to tell this story, with grace and nuance and heart." – Roxane Gay

Reimaging Desire: Queer Time, Liminal Space, And Narrative Anxiety, Aidan Mitchell Jan 2015

Reimaging Desire: Queer Time, Liminal Space, And Narrative Anxiety, Aidan Mitchell

HIM 1990-2015

Media shapes and supports certain ideas about how we view ourselves and others. The narratives that we consume train us to desire a particular formula of what critic Lauren Berlant calls "the good life": growing up, becoming a man or a woman, getting married, having children, and retiring. People who fail to fit into these narratives are often punished and excluded from society. However, queer theorist Jack Halberstam asks us to reconsider failure as a means of resistance. The texts that I examine fail to conform to narrative expectations or to fit formulae that are easily consumable or defined. They …

The Only Dreamer, Katelyn H. Long Jan 2015

The Only Dreamer, Katelyn H. Long

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

For my Senior Honors Project, I submitted an excerpt from a novel length story about a family line with the inheritable ability to take objects out of people’s dreams. In this young adult fantasy, Melody is a nineteen year old girl who struggles with the fact that her twin sister has inherited the ability while she has not. The excerpt introduces Melody’s family and shows the tension that exists between them while hinting to the reader that there is something more sinister that drives Melody away from her home.

The novel explores morality and its gray areas, the difficulty that …

Hard Luck Baby is a collection that elucidates the life of a southern, black mother as she grapples with her culture, family, love and the complex reality of black life in America. Hannah, is a woman who was born in the bubbling 40s, raised in the racial 60s and raptured in the drug-infested 80s. It is through these decades that the rough edges of America are exposed. May You Walk In Beauty: The Decline Of Navajo Land And Culture, Jocelyn Catterson Jan 2015

May You Walk In Beauty: The Decline Of Navajo Land And Culture, Jocelyn Catterson

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

The Navajo homeland, Dinetah, is bordered by four mountains that are sacred to the Navajo people: two in Colorado, one in New Mexico, and one in Arizona. Historically, Navajo medicine men have traveled to these mountains to renew prayers and collect medicinal herbs. Today, the mountains, which exist outside of the reservation boundaries, are used for resource extraction and various recreational pursuits. While many Navajo are fighting for the protection of these sacred lands and their traditional culture, others are disinterested. Traditional practices and beliefs are slowly disappearing within the Navajo Nation. The land-use issues associated with these sacred mountains …
