On Myrtle: A Novel, Laurie Ann Cedilnik Apr 2016

On Myrtle: A Novel, Laurie Ann Cedilnik

Dissertations

For nearly a century, readers have known the story of Myrtle Wilson, infamous literary mistress of F. Scott Fitzgerald's THE GREAT GATSBY. Fitzgerald's Tom Buchanan is married to a woman who is the picture of wealth and elegance, and yet he is drawn to this woman about whom readers know very little, and about whom we hear only in a retrospective vantage of the partial observer Nick Carraway. Mrs. Wilson puts on airs and takes blows, an her death is as graphic as any of literature's fallen women. And like Myrtle, Fitzgerald casts his fictionalized Flushing as symbolic of a …

The Unseen Hole, Jeremy Chase-Israel Apr 2016

The Unseen Hole, Jeremy Chase-Israel

Stonecoast MFA Theses and Capstones

Every story in this collection is an escape attempt. Some have better tools and plans than others, but they're all working towards a shared goal. When I sit down to write, I often picture the small crevices in my brain the ideas squeeze through before dropping down into the sewer of my imagination. If they manage to break free, then I clean them off, picking away bits of filth, until they're able to stand and grow on their own.

The characters filling my thesis are composite sketches of people I’ve known, animals I’ve met, and a sampling of my insecurities …

Paris Burn, Iliana Rocha Apr 2016

Paris Burn, Iliana Rocha

Dissertations

First and foremost, Paris Burn- interrogates language as a rebel heteroglot in its relation to power and to identity, focusing on liminality and marginality. The speakers in these poems constantly (re)enact, generate, disassemble, and revise their lyric selves, either reaffirming or challenging dominant discourses and ideologies. Drag queens figure prominently throughout the manuscript because they are the physical embodiment of constructs that challenge an essential identity—race, ethnicity, sexuality, and gender. The title, an abbreviated form of Paris is Burning, an influential 1980s documentary profiling drag culture in New York City, invokes a physical body that figures in metaphorical relation to …

Explaining Poetry To The Open Heart, Matthew Wayne Larrimore Apr 2016

Explaining Poetry To The Open Heart, Matthew Wayne Larrimore

English Theses & Dissertations

“Explaining Poetry to the Open Heart” is a creative writing thesis of poetry. It makes use of lyric and narrative poems that utilize sound, imagery, and other creative devices in order to communicate the narrator’s relationships with place, others, and self to the reader. A shifting point of view alternately restricts and expands the reader’s perspective in order to direct attention toward the reader’s own perceptions of the narrator, the world, and ultimately herself.

Versus Los Angeles, Thomas Vincent Kelly Apr 2016

Versus Los Angeles, Thomas Vincent Kelly

English Theses & Dissertations

The poems included in this manuscript construct, explore, and interrogate hyper reality and how it affects the twenty-first century. Simultaneously creating and destroying representations of a world made in the image of electronic entertainment, Versus Los Angeles inhabits various pop-culture personas in order to illustrate loss of identity, fame as commodity, the erosion of language, and the politics these various icons or platforms promote.

The Secret Society Of Fish-Gazers, Hannah Woodlan Apr 2016

The Secret Society Of Fish-Gazers, Hannah Woodlan

English Theses & Dissertations

This collection of stories focuses on characters who are lost in the sense that they know themselves only in terms of what has happened to them and who subconsciously see their lives in terms of fairy-tales. They wait for destiny to knock on their door, or think they have been forced into a destiny not of their choosing. Only when they free themselves of the notion than an outside force dictates their choices can they recast themselves as heroes of their own quests and enter the world.

Scholarly Ecotones In The Information Landscape, Drew Hubbell, John Ryan Mar 2016

Scholarly Ecotones In The Information Landscape, Drew Hubbell, John Ryan

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

For this issue of Landscapes, we invited contributors to reflect on the concept of ecotone as a method of interrogating intersections between literature, culture, art and landscapes. We wanted to encourage the ecocritical and creative arts communities (including poets, writers, photographers, painters and graphic artists) to engage with this term in the hopes that ecotone would do for the environmental humanities what Mary Louise Pratt’s contact zone did for cultural and post-colonialist studies (see, for example, Pickles and Rutherdale). Taking our cue from Donna Haraway’s provocative study of interspecies contact zones in When Species Meet, we proposed the …
