Lizita, Meet Liz A Memoir, Elizabeth Shannon

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

A change of life baby, Liz was born to poor, middle-aged Mexican American parents who didn't want the same things in life that she wanted. Generational trauma, internalized racism, and family dysfunction permeated her psyche and crippled her self-worth sending her into the fantasy worlds she created in her head. She managed to escape her family through marriage at nineteen years old, quickly realizing she had traded family dysfunction for marital dysfunction. But, then, an affair with a man more than twenty years her junior forced her to face the reality of her marriage. Newly divorced and finally free to …

Boxed In: Prose Poetry And Transgender Poetics, Lee Hooker May 2025

Boxed In: Prose Poetry And Transgender Poetics, Lee Hooker

Honors Theses

Though lived experience is essential to every poet's work, transgender poetry especially must be filtered through the poet's "diet." The manifestation of this experience often results in cross-genre works, such as the prose poem. This thesis consists of a craft essay, in which contemporary queer poets and their genre-bending works are examined, and a creative portion, which emphasizes transgender experience and the prose poem.

Art And Effort, Saul Gabriel Dominguez Ii May 2025

Art And Effort, Saul Gabriel Dominguez Ii

Theses and Dissertations

Since childhood I questioned living and my life itself. I wondered the extent of our own free will since people live to cry, to hate, to think they’ve been born simply to die. I use philosophers and some contemporary fiction to portray a lens of living where we must romanticize the present, rather than an uncertain future, and remove the idea that there is a reason for our living. This method of present thinking is a characteristic of a life-well lived. The manuscript will largely be told from my point of view, a young aspiring author with limited experience, through …

The Twelve Steps Of Emily, Emily Chick Apr 2025

The Twelve Steps Of Emily, Emily Chick

Master's Projects

The methodology of this project aims to showcase the complex overlapping of Kavan and my life through the lens of Affect Theory, and memoir. My goal is to tie together our lives through a kinship that is rooted in historical resonance and explained through the relationship of emotion and behavior analyzed in Affect theory. I want to pull my audience through a troubling reality, dealing with the active decision to forget or remember our past, and how we behave moving forward based on such a decision. My other motivation for choosing this style is to showcase the growth of my …

Efficiency Versus Quality: A Reflection On Making A Children’S Book, Elizabeth Diehl Apr 2025

Efficiency Versus Quality: A Reflection On Making A Children’S Book, Elizabeth Diehl

Honors Projects

When first looking at a children’s book, it appears to be a simple creative project. However, when one finds out the components that go into making one, it becomes clear that simplicity is deceiving. Research, ideation, rough drafts, and scripts are just a few of the necessary components for the finished product, and each one of these components can take multiple days or weeks to complete. This essay is a reflection on my experience of creating a picture book in one semester as I attempt to answer the questions “What if the most efficient process for creating a children's picture …
