LSU Master's Theses
This thesis studies the evolution, ideology and use of the myth of La Llorona through time in the Hispanic World. Considering this myth as one of the most known traditional narratives of the American continent, I begin by providing visual, ethnohistorical and ethnographical insights of weeping in Mesoamerica and South America and the specific mention of a weeping woman in some Spanish chronicles to say how western values were stablished in “the new continent” through this legend. I suggest that during the postcolonialism the legend did not tell anymore about a mother that cries and search a place for their …
American Waste, Jason Allen Christian
American Waste, Jason Allen Christian
LSU Master's Theses
American Waste is an interlinking story cycle told in the first person by a character called Rice. The stories follow Rice from his childhood (in rural Oklahoma) into adulthood, first when lives in a “punk house” with other young punk rockers in Oklahoma City, and later as he travels by freight train around the country. While he travels he reports on what he sees and experiences in the subculture that he is part of, whose members are called gutter punks and crusties. Theirs is a lifestyle bent on risk and adventure and also often plagued with drug and alcohol addiction. …
Naus, Justin Greene
Naus, Justin Greene
LSU Master's Theses
A collection of poems and nonfiction vignettes, naus entails a navigation of my experience with Tourette Syndrome and, consequently, what it can mean to have a noisy body. Rather than situate noise as a negatively construed iteration of sound, I contend that, following the work of Michel Serres, it is instead a disruption within a system, a parasitical interception, an affective force that has the potential to alter the positions and orientations of a given constellation of bodies, human or otherwise. Similar to how sound, as a verb, can be understood as “to fathom” or “to make sense of,” naus …
The Lowly Ones, Cassie Meredith Benson Grillon
The Lowly Ones, Cassie Meredith Benson Grillon
LSU Master's Theses
The Lowly Ones is a collection of short stories that interrogates the meaning of beatitudes written about in Luke 6:20–23 in the Bible. The characters in these stories navigate complex moral situations that examine the meaning behind the values presented in the beatitudes: mercy, sorrow, persecution, etc. These women face the challenges of faith in surprising ways, through the notoriety of a dead sister, the fascination with a lower-class neighbor, and the mysterious purchase of an exotic bird. This collection thoroughly erases the fictitious line religion and society draw between saints and sinners.

In the last minutes of sleep, Nick dreamed a bear crawled out of his mouth and he woke up scratching at his beard, unsure whether he feared birth or death. He reached below the bed where yesterday’s checkered chef pants were still in a heap on the floor and pulled them on even though he wasn’t a chef. He worked at the deli in the supermarket.

Reverse The Curse: Colonialist Legacies Of The Magic Poem, Karen E. Lepri
Reverse The Curse: Colonialist Legacies Of The Magic Poem, Karen E. Lepri
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation investigates the conceptual relationships between poetry, magic, and race and their effects on both intellectual and creative practices from modernism through the post-war era. In doing so, this study works cross-disciplinarily, tracing early anthropological and sociological characterizations of primitive religion in connection to early-to-mid-twentieth-century literary study and writing. In working across disciplines at this particularly fungible moment in the history of the academy, this dissertation attempts to understand how the concurrent colonial global context effects the production and organization of knowledge just prior to and during modernism. It ultimately seeks to de-colonize literary thinking about poetry by performing …
What The Wasp Said, Hugh C. Culik
What The Wasp Said, Hugh C. Culik
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
On a bright spring day, the ancient building housing the English and Logic Departments begins to slowly collapse on itself, trapping McMann (an inept English professor) and Lucy Curt (a logician) in the office they share. As the Fibonacci repetitions of the building’s brickwork slowly peel away, McMann seizes the moment to tell Lucy stories about skunks, stories whose recurrent pattern finally leads to the unrecognized connection between a “message” burned into his ear by a wasp and the orderly universe for which he cannot find a language. At last, he looks up only to see Lucy descending a ladder, …

The Collective (A Novel): Part One, Jeffrey S. Davidson
The Collective (A Novel): Part One, Jeffrey S. Davidson
Master’s Theses and Projects
The novel in draft, “The Collective,” is the result of an eight-month effort, which began in one of Professor Bruce Machart’s writing workshops at Bridgewater State University, spring of 2016. It sat for a couple of years of minor edits and revisions while I waited for the opportunity to once again work with Professor Machart. What follows is the first of four sections of the novel, book one of four if you will. The first eighty pages of a significantly longer work, this thesis lays the footstones of a dramatic defamiliarization of the Santa Claus myth. I’ve turned everything about …
Assisted Living: Stories, Donovan Swift
Assisted Living: Stories, Donovan Swift
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Assisted Living is a collection of stories that explores themes of parenthood, brotherhood, old and new love, adultery, financial strife, and the many faces of loss. The collection offers different points of view, which allow the reader to experience these themes within varying lives and situations. For example, the eponymous "Assisted Living" is from the perspective of a pet-sitter at the brink of losing both her job and husband, while "Holy Mother" explores the point of view of a wife coming to terms with her affair and the physical injury that has changed her husband. "The World of Reptiles" follows …
The Poems You Don't Own, Emma Reinhardt
The Poems You Don't Own, Emma Reinhardt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Poems You Don't Own is a collection of poems whose speakers explore the journey from the simplistic perspective of childhood to the confusion of adolescence to the first experiences of sexuality, heartbreak, and grief, examining the religious, societal, and gender expectations that influence those experiences. The collection's reverse-chronological order allows readers to travel back through the many experiences that shape a present moment. In poems such as "The Game of Life," the speaker considers the gender roles that begin to influence our perception of relationships from a young age, while poems such as "What to Know Before Writing about …
The Knitting Witch, Katherine Ervin
The Knitting Witch, Katherine Ervin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dangerous, magical women live in a world which explores queerness and antagonistic female relationships against the backdrop of Midwestern crafting culture. Craft magic is beauty and cruelty entwined, a perfect tool for witches to use against each other. After her mother is murdered, the eponymous knitting witch inherits a kidnapping and extortion ring, the victims sewn into enchanted quilts and hidden. With her mother dead, political squabbles consume the knitting witch's coven and rival magical families put pressure on her to give up the quilts, including the dangerous Ma family, whose daughter the knitting witch loves. The knitting witch must …
