The Stars Kept Shining: The Wartime Diary Of Esther Mathilda Sørensen, Larisa C. Neilson Apr 2021

The Stars Kept Shining: The Wartime Diary Of Esther Mathilda Sørensen, Larisa C. Neilson

Senior Honors Theses

In fulfillment of the Liberty University Honors Department Thesis requirement, the following is a creative thesis in the form of an historical fiction novella diary, written in the first person. The story follows the life of Esther, a young Danish woman, as she navigates what it means to be a Jew in World War II era Europe. Though the characters are fictional, the story presents possible real-life experiences for a person living during this time.

The style of this novella is popular among middle and high school teachers and can be an important teaching tool as it is an engaging …

Overgrown: A Collection Of Supernatural Narratives, Emily Dawn Cote

Honors Thesis

Overgrown is a collection of short stories stemming from nontangible anxieties, such as death, violence against women, and the queer search for acceptance. Each of the three pieces, including Thoughts of a Downed Oak Tree, Wrong, and For the Living, touches upon how individuals experience these anxieties and how they face them. I also selected Overgrown because all included pieces had to deal with a piece of reflection, overcoming or discovery. The Title Overgrown reflects both the sense of nature these pieces bring, but also the aspect of personal reflection they conjure. These characters engage with a degree of …

A cautionary story rooted in themes of autonomy and identity, Elara's journey begins when she joins the MM (Martian Marines) to follow in her late father's footsteps. However, the alien womb she is implanted with provides her with adverse effects, giving her the …

Throughout history, the integration of archival images into cinema has taken different forms depending on contexts and styles. Whether in fiction, documentary or experimental filmmaking, archival footage has been used for different purposes and for different reasons. Over time, this practice turns into an aesthetic and is referred to as found footage. This article asks the question of the link between cinema constructed from found footage and the philosophical concept of “heterotopias” developed by Michel Foucault, by studying the films representing the plays of Ziad Rahbani Bennesbe la boukra chou? and Film ameriki tawil, released in 2016, whose …

War is the main element in the Lebanese collective consciousness and memory. Throughout the years, Lebanese citizens fight its residue, which still traumatizes them and defines their existence. For artists, the reaction appeared through their work, and in this article, the Lebanese film 1982 by director Oualid Mouaness will be tackled. This film is analyzed through its aesthetics and plot. Mouaness had a story to tell, like any other Lebanese witnessing that era. Thus, his film 1982 is to be added to the long list of Lebanese war films. Yet, what makes it different? In this article, we study Mouaness’s …

Emotions In Academic Writing/Care-Work In Academia: Notes Towards A Repositioning Of Academic Labor In India (& Beyond), Anuj Gupta

Academic Labor: Research and Artistry (2017-2022 archives)

In this article I seek to reflect on a rupture that happened in my college-level writing classroom in India when a student chose to write about her experience of rape and accompanying life-long trauma in a literacy narrative assignment. This rupture, and the ways in which I struggled to engage with it, were initially discomforting but eventually led to strong convictions about the need to reposition academic writing and labor in Indian universities in a manner that sees the epistemic value of emotions in academic writing and the ethical value of care-work in academia as essential ingredients required to create …

Bad Grades, Making Bank, And Hating Piano: The Divergent Trajectories Of Two Creative Writers’ Semiotic Becomings, Jon Udelson Mar 2021

Bad Grades, Making Bank, And Hating Piano: The Divergent Trajectories Of Two Creative Writers’ Semiotic Becomings, Jon Udelson

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

This article challenges lore-based conceptions of creative writers’ becomings by showing how creative writers establish their literate and disciplinary identities not only through modes of learning characterized by curricular-based advancement in their field, but also through complex social and material negotiations with communities, institutions, and engagements outside of the disciplinary domain of creative writing. Drawing primarily from case study interview data, this article argues for a theoretical and empirical approach to studying creative writers’ “semiotic becomings” in order to further inform creative writing studies research, creative writing pedagogy, and the disciplinary benefits of validating creative writers’ extra-literate and extra-disciplinary experiences.

“Can I Write About What Happened To Me?”: A Narrative Inquiry Into The Audience And Purpose Of Students’ And Their Teachers’ Writing In An Age Of Accountability And Unrest, Kate Sjostrom Mar 2021

“Can I Write About What Happened To Me?”: A Narrative Inquiry Into The Audience And Purpose Of Students’ And Their Teachers’ Writing In An Age Of Accountability And Unrest, Kate Sjostrom

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

Many teachers and administrators, feeling the pressure to produce high standardized test scores and meet state standards, have narrowed the variety of genres taught and resorted to prescriptive writing formulas, effectively stunting the writing and thinking development of students and future teachers, and foreclosing the opportunity for writing to do important personal and interpersonal work in a time of racial reckoning, alienation, and violence. In this context, the study’s author and a pre-service teacher participating in the author’s research study on writing teacher identity development grapple with just what the audience and purpose of students’—and teachers’—writing should and could be. …

Atlas Planted, Annelise Belmonte

College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations

In "Atlas Planted," the game world plays as a life theater production where the storyline is influenced by player and other characters in a metaphorical and literal gardening mechanic. The emphasis on selfish vs selfless action in regards to energy and foliage serves as a critique of social responsibility and objectivism, the philosophy developed by Ayn Rand where each person is their own hero. According to that philosophy, if everyone were free to pursue their own greatest desires without directly harming others, the whole world would be better for it. In the case of these characters, how they pursue their …

“It was our first trip as a family: Ben, me, and his three kids. I’d never hiked more than 30 miles in one trip. I was suddenly nervous that I wouldn’t keep up on this hike, that I would never settle into this family, that maybe they preferred last summer when I wasn’t there. That’s when I knew we’d arrived at the wilderness we’d been seeking.”

The Tuxedo Archives

Atlantis is a mysterious island that has been mentioned by the famous Greek Philosopher Plato. Around 360 BC, Plato wrote his two famous dialogue books, Timaeus and Critias, which provide detailed descriptions about Atlantis. The existence of this island remains a big question for many researchers as well as many ordinary people. The ongoing interest about Atlantis, has resulted in the filming of a famous Walt Disney animated movie in 2001 under the name of “Atlantis: The Lost Empire.”
