Wish In One Hand, Amber John May 2021

Wish In One Hand, Amber John

English Honors Theses

In confessional genre-blending poems, prose, and poetic essays, Wish in One Hand probes the reality of living in liminal spaces, and how that reality changes perceptions of identity and the home. Crossing three physical spaces that separate the works, the idea of home is shown to be fluid and multifaceted, frequently interweaving with ideas of childhood, memory, and the passage of time. From meditations on mice in the walls to visceral descriptions of swamp creatures, Wish in One Hand reflects the personal struggle to reconcile liminality with the concrete nature of our worldly experiences.

The Air That Moves Between Us, Maia Lynn Daschke May 2021

The Air That Moves Between Us, Maia Lynn Daschke

Honors Program Theses and Projects

When I enrolled in my first creative nonfiction workshop my junior year of college, I was immediately taken with the genre. I had always loved writing, but I had never written about myself. Growing up I wrote fiction, and as I got older my writing was entirely comprised of academic pieces only. As soon as the nonfiction workshop allowed me to write about myself, I began using writing as a form of therapy and self-help. I was able to work through my feelings on the page and turn my emotional trauma, my regrets, and my embarrassments into artwork, which has …

My feature-length screenplay follows an anxious girl who, after her mother kicks her out of the house, is forced to live in her car. She’s in love with the dog walker but she’s the one who got her kicked out in the first place. Possessing the voices of queer, Black women, I display one possible outlook on the queer experience. “Home” broadens the narrative of young Black girls lived realities in America. “Home” depicts the realities of what it means to be young, Black, queer women in a world marked with religiosity, abuse, and grief, while in the process of …

Mule: Fifteen Autobiographical Tales, Nic Green May 2021

Mule: Fifteen Autobiographical Tales, Nic Green

Creative Nonfiction MFA Theses

Abstract:

Mule: Fifteen Autobiographical Tales contains stories which are true except when they are not. Were this to be marketed by a publishing firm, it would be cataloged (for legal and expedient purposes) as fiction, like Kurt Vonnegut's highly autobiographical Timequake. I, also like Vonnegut, would protest that designation in the book’s introduction. Vonnegut called Timequake a “stew,” and I rather like that classification for Mule, which, like its author, is Southern. Mule, then, must be a bubbling gumbo built of truths, either of the strict or the spiritual variety. As the book's author, I trust readers …

Gato Negro, Tecolote Floreado, Rosalee Montoya May 2021

Gato Negro, Tecolote Floreado, Rosalee Montoya

Chamisa: A Journal of Literary, Performance, and Visual Arts of New Mexico and the Greater Southwest

Some (Im)Material Girls, Living In (Im)Material Worlds, With Seeds, Stars, And Shit, Matthew Weiderspon

Theses and Dissertations

This writing situates material and gestural vocabularies cultivated in my artwork in relation to my lived experience; primarily my rural upbringing in Colorado. Scattered floor dispersals, calling sounds, and bodily movements desire reconsiderations of hope in precarity through a disorientation of place, association, scale, and language.

Tootsie Pop: Memorable Childhood Candy Commercial, Emily Newcomer May 2021

Tootsie Pop: Memorable Childhood Candy Commercial, Emily Newcomer

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

Before I began writing the first draft I watched the Classic Tootsie Pop commercial multiple times and determined how the commercial effectively allured to the audience of both parents and their children. While I wrote my first draft, I continued to play the commercial and reminded myself of the lasting impact of this 1970s commercial as my classmates in elementary school conducted this licking experiment. After my first draft, I received feedback from a classmate and my professor. I took some of their advice, edited my paper, and turned it in.

Six years ago, my mother passed away while my brother and I were still attempting to obtain extra benefits she was qualified for but not receiving from The Veterans Administration. In this capstone, I will be detailing the website and blog I have begun to build to give senior citizens, their families, and caregivers access to professionals in such topics as insurance, real estate, and legal issues. I will also be …

Skateboard Jesus, Kenley Alligood May 2021

Skateboard Jesus, Kenley Alligood

All NMU Master's Theses

Skateboard Jesus is a collection of poetry written in mostly first and second person free verse, containing in addition some prose poems and other forms harder to categorize. The poetry in this collection is largely narrative in structure, and engages with themes of identity and performance as objects of its larger concern, often filtered through the lens of music. In addition, my work often focuses on religion, mental health, and gender and sexuality. This collection, by the very nature of its concerns, engages in discussions of performance theory. Performance and narrative are inseparable entities, permeating every facet of our existence …

Plastic Stars, Hilary Wheelan Remley May 2021

Plastic Stars, Hilary Wheelan Remley

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This story collection centers on coming of age and childhood narratives. These stories challenge the use of memory as a framing device for such narratives, refusing larger biographical context. Instead, the stories within this collection focus on the immediate experiences of childhood and adolescence. Additionally, these stories focus on a specific time and place. Each story takes place within the American Southeast during the early 2000s. This specificity of setting, especially as it exists as a period piece, serves to further challenge the effect of memory and historiography of many childhood narratives.

The collection of translations attempts to offer a small sample of the crônicas of Rubem Braga (1913-1990), a Brazilian journalist who is known throughout Brazil for “elevating” the form of the crônica from ephemera to the literary.

Þorn: A Novel Excerpt Exploring Giantesses, Their Relation To Women's Bodily Expectations, And Patriarchal Control In The Literature Of Early Modern Britain And Contemporary America., Brady P Alexander

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

This thesis will analyze examples of women of size in the literature of the British Isles throughout history, focusing predominantly upon the Early Modern Period, and will create a fiction piece in response to such attitudes. I argue that one of the most clear ways to dissect contemporary cultural attitudes about powerful women and women who occupy more space than men is to examine giantesses and other examples of women of size within this period of literature. From this, a novel excerpt will be written from the perspective of a time-traveling woman of size who engages with these texts and …
