That’s a powerful tool.

Time To Re-Evaluate Taniguchi Jiro's Pace In Manga, Natsume Fusanosuke, Jon Holt, Teppei Fukuda
World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations
Natsume Fusanosuke is Emeritus Professor of the Graduate Program of Cultural Studies in Corporeal and Visual Representation, Gakushūin University. Despite his recent retirement from Gakushūin in March, he is still very active in manga criticism and scholarship. Originally a manga artist himself in the 1980s, by the 1990s he began doing more writing about manga, although he often still employs his cartooning skills to assist in his analysis and explanation of his subjects, much like his American contemporary Scott McCloud. It is not a stretch to compare the latter’s Understanding Comics to Natsume's work in the classic How to Read …

Wheels Of Love: Turning Souls To The Saviour, Amy Leah Berry Magaw
Masters Theses
This paper is written to explore the success of The Hallmark Movie Pattern. The famous female-lead romantic-comedy genre shines through their network when set against the backdrop of the Christmas season. Though many critics chastise the network for its cheesy repetitive storylines, the Hallmark Channel continues to hold the majority of the viewers every Christmas season. The franchise has, however, alienated some of their viewership by introducing the gay/lesbian agenda into some of their storylines, opening the door for Christian filmmakers to move into high demand. New Christian film streaming services such as PureFlix can now offer films that exceed …

Explosive Family Dinners: Bipolar Disorder, Temporal Lobe Epilepsy & Me Critical Afterword Convulsive Family Dynamics: When Mental And Neurological Disabilities Entangle And Isolate., Elizabeth Lane Glass
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a memoir that is about my nuclear family. The themes within the memoir itself include my father’s bipolar disorder, my temporal lobe epilepsy, and how volatile the combination was as I grew up, but also how loving my family was, despite all the issues. It also looks at the ramifications of having temporal lobe epilepsy, growing up queer (bi+) in a time when being queer at all was not accepted and being bi+ was not understood, and the issues I’ve had with my sisters, which were caused in part by my father The memoir is accompanied by …
A Damn Good Time: Vignettes, Poems, And Recipes Inspired By A Life Lived Like Ernest Hemingway, Gabrielle Schenkelberg
A Damn Good Time: Vignettes, Poems, And Recipes Inspired By A Life Lived Like Ernest Hemingway, Gabrielle Schenkelberg
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The creative thesis, "A Damned Good Time" is a mixed-genre fiction collection consisting of nine chapters. There are nine short stories, eighteen creative recipes, and eleven poems, all written while traveling and experiencing life like Hemingway. I'm inspired by the way Hem explains travel as a journey of self-discovery, writing deep friendships, tender love stories, and encapsulating his zest for life in his work. The creative sample I've included touches on all of these themes.

Tsiyim, A Hiding, Aaron Lopatin
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Tsiyim is a collection of poems and poetic sequences that investigate faith, doubt, and the natural world. The poems draw on the stories of martyrs, saints, prophets, and pilgrims, entering a mimetic chain that sets language and poetry as the placeholder for a contemporary faith to take place.

This is a tongue-in-cheek essay that I wrote for a class while I was studying abroad in Nantes, France. Our professor told us we could write about anything we chose, as long as it gave him a representative sample of our writing style. I chose to complain about French grammar rules. The title translated into English means, “The Plague of the French Language,” and the plague to which I am referring is the gender of nouns. Now, the grammatical concept of gender does not apply in the same way to the English language, so allow me to explain further.

DISCOVERING CAROLINE is the script for an ensemble, a feature-length supernatural drama, set in 1899. Caroline, presumed dead at birth, returns forty years later to the scene of that tragedy, a university nursing school training hospital, where her birth mother still works as a lunch lady. Surrounded by a dozen other characters (thirteen if you count the pig), played against a backdrop of a handful of supernatural events, this script explores familiar love, romantic love, inappropriate love, truth, deceit, death, and the consequences on others when these life events intertwine throughout seventy-seven scenes. Included here is an introduction as well …

Dorothy Scarborough. 'Supernatural Science' (1917), Arthur B. Evans
Global Language Studies Faculty publications
Introduced and annotated by Arthur B. Evans In its day, Dorothy Scarborough’s book The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction (1917) was considered to be the best scholarly study on the subject. As the author points out in the book’s preface, the sheer size of its corpus was impressive: “the supernatural in modern English fiction has been found difficult to deal with because of its wealth of material. While there has been no previous book on the topic, and none related to it ... the mass of fiction itself introducing ghostly or psychic motifs is simply enormous” (v). Scarborough divided her …

Telepathic Visions: On Alvin Yapan’S An Kubo Sa Kawayanan (2015), Christian Jil R. Benitez
Filipino Faculty Publications
This article considers the practice of encouraged gazing in Alvin Yapan's An Kubo sa Kawayanan (“The Hut in the Bamboo Grove”) (2015) as a possible exercise on revering things. As such, it is wagered to be instructive towards a reunderstanding of vision as a form of material encounter with things beyond their mere objectification. Sense of sight is argued to be a human telepathic ability, that is, a distance (tele) feeling (pathein) with and for thigns, despite and because of their indeterminate materialities. Through looking closely at the rhetorical engagements of Yapan's Kubo with its various …
