The Tuxedo Archives
You might not know it by looking at her with her luxurious black curly fur, rust colored stockings and eyebrows, white paws, broad regal white chest, white muzzle and blaze and crowning tip of white fur on the tail, a tail that seems to be perpetual wagging, in a medium slow relaxed way, in an “I’m just hanging out and loving every moment of life,” an easy way kind of wag for most people not in the know would just look at her and say, she’s a dog, or she’s “just” a dog, or, in a rather frightened, anxious, way, …
"Read It Again!": Storytelling To Imitate The Great Teacher, Kate Whatley
"Read It Again!": Storytelling To Imitate The Great Teacher, Kate Whatley
Senior Honors Theses
The student’s mind is bent on stories, asking mothers around the world to ‘read it again’. These stories preserve information and emotions for centuries. In the classroom, stories enliven motivation and empathy in ways that result in higher academic achievement and social awareness. Learning to use stories as a key instructional strategy will allow for more equitable opportunities in classrooms, encourage mental health and truth telling for the teacher and the student collectively, and allow the academic community to imitate Christ by contributing to the bigger story taking place across time. In application of using stories as teachers, this thesis …

Great River Legs, Laura Madeline Wiseman
Zea E-Books Collection
Great River Legs is a lyric collection of prose poetry, creative nonfiction, and found poetry. This creative response documents my 1,398 mile, 25-day bicycle ride from Muscatine, Iowa, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, between October 2017–March 2018. The journey took place in legs over breaks during the school year, with two additional back-to-back weekend rides that started the adventure.
In her latest book, Great River Legs, Laura Madeline Wiseman takes you on an intimate journey as she weaves in and out of a cross-country, long distance bike ride. In this beautifully curated book that includes prose poetry, creative non-fiction and …

Looking Back, Or Re-Visioning: Contemporary American Jewish Poets On “Lot’S Wife”, Anat Koplowitz-Breier
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Although mentioned only twice in Genesis (19:17, 26), Lot’s wife has been a topic of much discussion amongst both traditional and modern commentators and exegetes. The traditional midrashim seek to explain why she chose to disregard the instructions she was given and the nature of her punishment. In doing so, they follow two principal directions, representing her a) negatively as a wicked sinner, a Sodomite who acted as such even before disobeying the divine decree not to look backwards—thus linking her disobedience with her intrinsic character (e.g., curious, greedy, inhospitable, faithless); or b) positively as a loving mother and daughter. …

Cultivating The Cyborg Voice: Technology In The Creative Writing Classroom, Rebecca Valley
Cultivating The Cyborg Voice: Technology In The Creative Writing Classroom, Rebecca Valley
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
This article takes a critical look at pieces generated from a capstone project in a recent mixed-genre Intro to Creative Writing workshop. It was inspired by an open-ended creative project asking students to use technology to generate unconventional works of fiction, poetry, memoir, and theatre. Writer and educator Rebecca Valley's hope when assigning this project was to encourage students to innovate and step outside their standard forms. But beyond mere innovation of form, students surprised her in their capacity to use technology to hybridize their authorial voices – rather than merely changing the form of their own words, they became …
Centering The Activity Of Writing: Designing Writing Tasks For The Introductory Creative-Writing Classroom, C. Connor Syrewicz
Centering The Activity Of Writing: Designing Writing Tasks For The Introductory Creative-Writing Classroom, C. Connor Syrewicz
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
In this paper, I argue that writing tasks (assignments, exercises, prompts, activities, etc.) are one of the best tools we have to teach our students how to perform the activity of writing more effectively. Contemporary creative writing instructors tend to be suspicious of writing tasks, and I argue that this suspicion is a largely result of the predominantly “text-centered” view of writing instruction that prioritizes teaching students “textual knowledge” above all else. Following others, I call for placing a much greater pedagogical emphasis upon the process of producing texts, and I argue that this can only be accomplished by centering …
What Do Introductory Students Learn By Creating Shareable Digital Artifacts?, Jill Stukenberg
What Do Introductory Students Learn By Creating Shareable Digital Artifacts?, Jill Stukenberg
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
In this critical reflection, an instructor of Introduction to Creative Writing discusses student learning from the study and creation of “sharable digital artifacts”—for example poem films and Instagram poetry. This practice benefits both non-majors and majors as students make gains in specific skills of revision, metaphor making, and image creation. Further, students make gains in threshold concepts of creative writing through the activity of transferring their knowledge across creative writing genres.

Charles Schulz’s Peanuts turned 71 years old on October 2, and we celebrate the anniversary of this world-famous comic strip with a love letter from Japan. Natsume Fusanosuke originally wrote this essay[1] about his connection to Peanuts in 1999 for a supplement issue of Bungei Shunjū magazine: a special on one of the gods of comics, Tezuka Osamu, with whom Charles Schulz stands in great company. Natsume is a voracious reader and a global observer of both manga and world comics. Here, he describes the appeal of Peanuts for Japanese readers and how it compares to a similarly beloved Japanese …
