A General Design Tool For Computer Directories, Edward J. Peeler Dec 1986

A General Design Tool For Computer Directories, Edward J. Peeler

Masters Theses

The primary objective of a directory is to organize information for efficient retrieval. There are many techniques that can be applied to the design of a directory. One particularly useful technique employs the use of inverted files on range attributes. The technique provides an effective directory for a variety of applications and for very large databases. This paper examines the technique and describes the implementation of a general design tool based on these principles.

Horizontal Fragmentation And Allocation In A Distributed Database For Cost Minimization With Reliability And Space Constraints, Elmo Loren Ivey Dec 1986

Horizontal Fragmentation And Allocation In A Distributed Database For Cost Minimization With Reliability And Space Constraints, Elmo Loren Ivey

Masters Theses

In this paper a method for horizontal fragmentation of a relational database is presented. A method is given for calculating the benefit or cost savings obtained by allocating a given fragment to a site, independently for each site.

To obtain optimal benefit each fragment is allocated to all sites where there is a positive benefit. This may result in the allocation of some fragments to multiple sites.

Finally a method is given for removing or reallocating certain fragments from sites with insufficient storage. Also, a method is given for allocating fragments to multiple sites to meet constraints on the required …

Do We Really Know What Makes Educational Software Effective? A Call For Empirical Research On Effectiveness, Karen Jolicoeur, Dale E. Berger Nov 1986

Do We Really Know What Makes Educational Software Effective? A Call For Empirical Research On Effectiveness, Karen Jolicoeur, Dale E. Berger

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Empirical information on specific factors that make educational software effective in reaching instructional objectives would be of considerable value. The authors describe the current state of evaluation research with educational software and discuss how popular software review methods fall short of meeting our need to know how well specific programs work.

A Unified Approach To Mixed-Mode Simulation, Roger D. Chamberlain, Mark A. Franklin Nov 1986

A Unified Approach To Mixed-Mode Simulation, Roger D. Chamberlain, Mark A. Franklin

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper presents a unified approach to mixed-mode simulation. It investigates the algorithms for both logic and circuit simulation, considering their similarities and differences, and a general framework is presented for integrating the two algorithms in uniform manner. The time advance mechanisms and component functional evaluations of the algorithms are show to be similar in nature, and mechanisms for the translation of information represented uniquely in the two algorithms are given. The resulting integrated algorithms is capable of performing mixed-mode simulation, where a circuit is partitioned into discrete and continuous regions, and each region is simulated at the appropriate level. …

An Investigation Of Resolution And Addressability Requirements For Digital Display Systems Used In Word-Processing And Computer-Aided-Drafting Applications, Stephen T. Knox Oct 1986

An Investigation Of Resolution And Addressability Requirements For Digital Display Systems Used In Word-Processing And Computer-Aided-Drafting Applications, Stephen T. Knox

Dissertations and Theses

Two hardware factors contributing to the overall image quality of digital CRTs are display resolution and addressability. The relationship between these two factors and human performance was modeled by a metric of display quality, the Resolution Addressability Ratio (RAR), and investigated within the contexts of Word-Processing (WP) and Computer-Aided-Drafting (CAD) tasks. The findings indicate a perceptual limit to MTF bandwidth improvements, and significant differences in display quality requirements between the two applications. The regression of image quality as a function of RAR metric values resulted in an r² = 0.94 for the WP task and an r² = 0.79 for …

Computers And The Nature Of Man: A Historian's Perspective On Controversies About Artificial Intelligence, Judith V. Grabiner Oct 1986

Computers And The Nature Of Man: A Historian's Perspective On Controversies About Artificial Intelligence, Judith V. Grabiner

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

The purpose of the present paper is to provide a historical perspective on recent controversies, from Turing's time on, about artificial intelligence, and to make clear that these are in fact controversies about the nature of man. First, I shall briefly review three recent controversies about artificial intelligence, controversies over whether computers can think and over whether people are no more than information-processing machines. These three controversies were each initiated by philosophers who, irrespective of what the programs of their time actually did, viewed with alarm the argument that if a machine can think, a thinking being is just a …

Wind Streamline Ambiguity Removal Of Microwave Scatterometer Data, Hans W. Zaepfel Oct 1986

Wind Streamline Ambiguity Removal Of Microwave Scatterometer Data, Hans W. Zaepfel

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

There is a class of satellite microwave scatterometers that return oceanographic information which includes wind vectors with directional ambiguity. The first part of the ambiguity removal process is to reduce the data to a directional ambiguity of 180°. This thesis shows that wind direction change contains the information required for streamline ambiguity removal and that syntactic pattern recognition techniques can be used to locate the areas of wind direction change. Spreading the information along the areas of wind direction change results in the removal of the streamline ambiguity. The algorithm is implemented and the results are presented showing that it …
