This paper proposes a novel graph structure to address the problems of information spreading in a real-world, frequently updating graph, with two main contributions at hand: accurately tracing infection diffusion according to fine-grained user movements and finding vulnerable vertices under the virus immunization scenario to mitigate infection diffusion. Unlike previous work that primarily predicts the long-term epidemic trend at the census level, this study aims to intervene in the short-term at the individual level. Therefore, two downstream tasks are formulated to illustrate practicalities: Epidemic Mitigating in Public Area problem (EMA) and Epidemic Maximized Spread in Public Area problem (ESA), where …

Harnessing Collective Structure Knowledge In Data Augmentation For Graph Neural Networks, Rongrong Ma, Guansong Pang, Ling Chen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Graph neural networks (GNNs) have achieved state-of-the-art performance in graph representation learning. Message passing neural networks, which learn representations through recursively aggregating information from each node and its neighbors, are among the most commonly-used GNNs. However, a wealth of structural information of individual nodes and full graphs is often ignored in such process, which restricts the expressive power of GNNs. Various graph data augmentation methods that enable the message passing with richer structure knowledge have been introduced as one main way to tackle this issue, but they are often focused on individual structure features and difficult to scale up with …

With the increasing demand for mobile computing, the requirement for intelligent resource management has also increased. Cloud computing lessens the energy consumption of user equipment, but it increases the latency of the system. Whereas edge computing reduces the latency along with the energy consumption, it has limited resources and cannot process bigger tasks. To resolve these issues, a Priority-based Hybrid task Partitioning and Offloading (PHyPO) scheme is introduced in this paper, which prioritizes the tasks with high time sensitivity and offloads them intelligently. It also calculates the optimal number of partitions a task can be divided into. The utility of …

Reference Dependence In Queue Design And Pricing Strategies, Jian Liu, Yongpin Zhou, Jian Chen, Peng Li
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This research investigates the effect of reference dependence on waiting times in service systems which formerly used a first-in-first-out (FIFO) service but have introduced a priority line with a fee. Our model combines reference-dependent gain-loss utility with standard customer utility, and we posit that customers are pleased with shorter-than-expected waiting times, whereas longer-than-expected times lead to dissatisfaction and an increased likelihood of balking. The study explores two scenarios: a captive customer system (CCS) and a noncaptive customer system (NCCS), with a focus on optimal pricing and segmentation strategies for revenue and social welfare maximization. The results reveal that, in a …

The recent advances of deep learning in various mobile and Internet-of-Things applications, coupled with the emergence of edge computing, have led to a strong trend of performing deep learning inference on the edge servers located physically close to the end devices. This trend presents the challenge of how to meet the quality-of-service requirements of inference tasks at the resource-constrained network edge, especially under variable or even bursty inference workloads. Solutions to this challenge have not yet been reported in the related literature. In the present paper, we tackle this challenge by means of workload-adaptive inference request scheduling: in different workload …

Advanced natural language processing (NLP) models are increasingly applied in music composition and performance, particularly for generating vocal melodies and simulating singing voices. While NLP techniques have been effective in analyzing vocal performance data to assess quality and style, the automatic transcription of vocal performances into sheet music remains a significant challenge. Manual transcription tools often fall short due to the intricate dynamics of vocal expression. This study tackles the automation of vocal performance transcription into sheet music using innovative techniques, including large language models (LLMs). We propose a method to translate vocal audio input into display-ready sheet music effectively. …

In recent times, Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have been trained under two predominant paradigms. Generative training has enabled Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) to tackle various complex tasks, yet issues such as hallucinations and weak object discrimination persist. Discriminative training, exemplified by models like CLIP, excels in zero-shot image-text classification and retrieval, yet struggles with complex scenarios requiring fine-grained semantic differentiation. This paper addresses these challenges by proposing a unified approach that integrates the strengths of both paradigms. Considering interleaved image-text sequences as the general format of input samples, we introduce a structure-induced training strategy that imposes semantic relationships between input …

The omnipresence of NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems (COPs) compels domain experts to engage in trial-and-error heuristic design process. The long-standing endeavor of design automation has gained new momentum with the rise of large language models (LLMs). This paper introduces Language Hyper-Heuristics (LHHs), an emerging variant of Hyper-Heuristics that leverages LLMs for heuristic generation, featuring minimal manual intervention and open-ended heuristic spaces. To empower LHHs, we present Reflective Evolution (ReEvo), a generic searching framework that emulates the reflective design approach of human experts while far surpassing human capabilities with its scalable LLM inference, Internet-scale domain knowledge, and powerful evolutionary search. Sprinql : Sub-Optimal Demonstrations Driven Offline Imitation Learning, Minh Huy Hoang, Tien Mai, Pradeep Varakantham
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We focus on offline imitation learning (IL), which aims to mimic an expert's behavior using demonstrations without any interaction with the environment. One of the main challenges in offline IL is the limited support of expert demonstrations, which typically cover only a small fraction of the state-action space. While it may not be feasible to obtain numerous expert demonstrations, it is often possible to gather a larger set of sub-optimal demonstrations. For example, in treatment optimization problems, there are varying levels of doctor treatments available for different chronic conditions. These range from treatment specialists and experienced general practitioners to less …

Improving Environment Novelty Quantification For Effective Unsupervised Environment Design, Jayden Teoh, Wenjun Li, Pradeep Varakantham
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Unsupervised Environment Design (UED) formalizes the problem of autocurricula through interactive training between a teacher agent and a student agent. The teacher generates new training environments with high learning potential, curating an adaptive curriculum that strengthens the student’s ability to handle unseen scenarios. Existing UED methods mainly rely on regret, a metric that measures the difference between the agent’s optimal and actual performance, to guide curriculum design. Regret-driven methods generate curricula that progressively increase environment complexity for the student but overlook environment novelty–a critical element for enhancing an agent’s generalizability. Measuring environment novelty is especially challenging due to the underspecified …

We propose C-MELT, a novel framework for multimodal self-supervised learning of Electrocardiogram (ECG) and text encoders. C-MELT pre-trains a contrastive-enhanced masked auto-encoder architecture using ECG-text paired data. It exploits the generative strengths with improved discriminative capabilities to enable robust cross-modal alignment. This is accomplished through a carefully designed model, loss functions, and a novel negative sampling strategy. Our preliminary experiments demonstrate significant performance improvements with up to 12% in downstream cardiac arrhythmia classification and patient identification tasks. Our findings demonstrate C-MELT's capacity to extract rich, clinically relevant features from ECG-text pairs, paving the way for more accurate and efficient cardiac …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Log parsing transforms log messages into structured formats, serving as the prerequisite step for various log analysis tasks. Although a variety of log parsing approaches have been proposed, their performance on complicated log data remains compromised due to the use of human-crafted rules or learning-based models with limited training data. The recent emergence of powerful large language models (LLMs) demonstrates their vast pre-trained knowledge related to code and logging, making it promising to apply LLMs for log parsing. However, their lack of specialized log parsing capabilities currently hinders their parsing accuracy. Moreover, the inherent inconsistent answers, as well as the …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In the cloud-assisted industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), since the cloud server is not always trusted, the leakage of data privacy becomes a critical problem. Dynamic symmetric searchable encryption (DSSE) allows for the secure retrieval of outsourced data stored on cloud servers while ensuring data privacy. Forward privacy and backward privacy are necessary security requirements for DSSE. However, most existing schemes either trade the server’s large storage overhead for forward privacy or trade efficiency/overhead for weak backward privacy. These schemes cannot fully meet the security requirements of cloud-assisted IIoT systems. We propose a fast and firmly secure SSE scheme called …

Neutrosophic Cox Proportional Hazards Model For Robust Variable Selection In Survival Analysis, Ibrahim Yasser, Aya A. Abd El-Khalek, A. A. Salama, Doaa A. Abdo
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
This paper introduces a novel approach for variable selection in survival analysis by integrating neutrosophic logic into the Cox Proportional Hazards (Cox PH) model to address the limitations of recent studies related to high dimensionality. Neutrosophic logic, is a mathematical framework that allows for uncertainty, indeterminacy, and inconsistency, and particularly well suited for handling the complexity and often-ambiguous nature of biological data. By incorporating neutrosophic sets into the Cox PH model, we aim to enhance model robustness, improve variable selection, and address the curse of dimensionality. We compare the performance of the neutrosophic-enhanced Cox PH model with traditional variable selection …

On Neutrosophic Pδs-Irresolute Functions In Neutrosophic Topological Spaces, Bishnupada Debnath, Anjan Mukherjee
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In general topology the notion of pds-irresolute and aδs-irresolute functions were introduced by Beceren and Noiri. In the present paper, these concepts of pδs-irresolute (briefly, Npδs-irresolute) and aδs-irresolute (briefly, Naδs-irresolute) functions are explored for the first time in neutrosophic topological spaces (NTS) as generalized version. We proved that every Naδs-irresolute function is Npδs-irresolute function but not conversely. Some characterizations, counter examples, and fundamental features are also presented. By neutrosophic pre-open, neutrosophic δ-open, and neutrosophic δ-semi-open sets, some new fundamental properties of such functions are provided. Furthermore, under Npδs-irresolute functions, the behavior of neutrosophic semi-connected, neutrosophic pre-connected, neutrosophic pre-T2, neutrosophic δ-semi-T2, …

Comparative Analysis Of Multi-Criteria Techniques In Neutrosophic Environment And Their Applications To Economic Condition Assessment, Asmaa Elsayed, Mai Mohamed
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In economic decision-making, the challenge of evaluating multiple, often conflicting criteria necessitates advanced Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) techniques. Traditional methods can struggle with the inherent uncertainty, ambiguity, and imprecision of real-world data. This paper addresses these challenges by investigating the effectiveness of various MCDM techniques within neutrosophic environments, with a particular focus on the Criteria-wise Alternatives Ranking and Correlation Analysis for Composite Scoring (CARCACS) method. Neutrosophic sets, which incorporate truth, falsity, and indeterminacy, provide a robust framework for addressing the vagueness and inconsistencies found in economic indicators such as GDP growth, employment levels, inflation rates, trade balances, investment activity, and government …

Expression recognition holds great promise for applications such as content recommendation and mental healthcare by accurately detecting users’ emotional states. Traditional methods often rely on cameras or wearable sensors, which raise privacy concerns and add extra device burdens. In addition, existing acoustic-based methods struggle to maintain satisfactory performance when there is a distribution shift between the training dataset and the inference dataset. In this paper, we introduce FacER+, an active acoustic facial expression recognition system, which eliminates the requirement for external microphone arrays. FacER+ extracts facial expression features by analyzing the echoes of near-ultrasound signals emitted between the 3D facial …

Enhancing information security has become increasingly significant in the digital age. This paper investigates the concept of physical layer security (PLS) within a relay-aided power line communication (PLC) system operating over a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel based on MK model. Specifically, we examine the transmission of confidential signals between a source and a distant destination while accounting for the presence of multiple eavesdroppers, both colluding and non-colluding. We propose a two-phase jamming scheme that leverages a full-duplex (FD) amplify-and-forward (AF) relay to address this challenge. Our primary objective is to maximize the secrecy rate, which necessitates the optimization of the …

P2X receptors (P2X1-7) are non-selective cation channels involved in many physiological activities such as synaptic transmission, immunological modulation, and cardiovascular function. These receptors share a conserved mechanism to sense extracellular ATP. TNP-ATP is an ATP derivative acting as a nonselective competitive P2X antagonist. Understanding how it occupies the orthosteric site in the absence of agonism may help reveal the key allostery during P2X gating. However, TNP-ATP/P2X complexes (TNP-ATP/human P2X3 (hP2X3) and TNP-ATP/chicken P2X7 (ckP2X7)) with distinct conformations and different mechanisms of action have been proposed. Whether these represent species and subtype variations or experimental differences remains unclear. Here, we show …

Since drones cannot fly in any kind of weather, they are not safe for time-sensitive activities. The study examines how the passage of weather systems in Iraq leads to the ban on drone flights, and how these weather conditions impact the aerodynamic forces of the drone. Hourly climate data for the study area were obtained from ECMWF ERA5 and CAMS in NetCDF format for four climate stations (Erbil, Baghdad, Rutbah, and Basrah). A ScanEagle drone was chosen for this study. The Python programming language was used to perform mathematical operations to calculate the ban on drone flights. ArcGIS 10.8 was …

Abstracttrace: The Use Of Execution Traces To Cluster, Classify, Prioritize, And Optimize A Bloated Test Suite, Ziad A. Al-Sharif, Clinton L. Jeffrey
Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences Faculty Articles
Due to the incremental and iterative nature of the software testing process, a test suite may become bloated with redundant, overlapping, and similar test cases. This paper aims to optimize a bloated test suite by employing an execution trace that encodes runtime events into a sequence of characters forming a string. A dataset of strings, each of which represents the code coverage and execution behavior of a test case, is analyzed to identify similarities between test cases. This facilitates the de-bloating process by providing a formal mechanism to identify, remove, and reduce extra test cases without compromising software quality. This …

For sharing privacy-sensitive data, de-identification is commonly regarded as adequate for safeguarding privacy. Synthetic data is also being considered as a privacy-preserving alternative. Recent successes with numerical and tabular data generative models and the breakthroughs in large generative language models raise the question of whether synthetically generated clinical notes could be a viable alternative to real notes for research purposes. In this work, we demonstrated that (i) de-identification of real clinical notes does not protect records against a membership inference attack, (ii) proposed a novel approach to generate synthetic clinical notes using the current state-of-the-art large language models, (iii) evaluated …

An Improved Conditional Integrator Sliding Mode Controller Based On Swarm Intelligence For A Magnetic Levitation System, Abdelkader Kerraci, Mohamed Fayçal Khelfi, Zoubir Ahmed-Foitih
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper proposes an enhanced Conditional Integrator Sliding Mode Controller using Particle Swarm Optimization (CISMCPSO) for a magnetic levitation system (MLS). The main advantage of this controller is its robustness to uncertainties and disturbances, which also avoids chattering and ensures zero static steady-state error. The main idea of CISMCPSO is to activate its integral action only when the sliding surface reaches the boundary layer while it is reduced to zero or close to zero elsewhere, which avoids destroying the transient response caused by the conventional integral sliding-mode controller. A particle swarm optimization algorithm schedules the conditional integral term parameter of …

Uniform 3d Scattering Point Model For Simulating The Dynamic Radar Echo From Wind Farm, Bo Tang, Zhendong Zhu, Zhiyu Shang, Huanghai Xie, Feng Wang, Jiaxu Chen
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The calculation scale of simulating wind farm dynamic radar echo is gradually growing with the increasing scale of wind farms, which can hardly meet the requirements of real-time radar echo simulation. Considering that the method of surface element division can greatly influence the result of simulation, uniform surface element division is applied to accelerate the traditional simulation algorithm based on the refined 3D scattering point model and enhance the main characteristics of the radar echo. The solution time of dynamic radar echoes from 1-8 wind turbines is calculated to test the average speed that the uniform 3D scattering point model …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
With the proliferation of social media, there has been a sharp increase in offensive content, particularly targeting vulnerable groups, exacerbating social problems such as hatred, racism, and sexism. Detecting offensive language use is crucial to prevent offensive language from being widely shared on social media. However, the accurate detection of irony, implication, and various forms of hate speech on social media remains a challenge. Natural language-based deep learning models require extensive training with large, comprehensive, and labeled datasets. Unfortunately, manually creating such datasets is both costly and error-prone. Additionally, the presence of human-bias in offensive language datasets is a major …

A Cascade Genetic Algorithm Based Adaptive Backstepping Impedance Control For Upper Limb Rehabilitation Robot, Mawloud Aichaoui, Ameur Ikhlef
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper proposes a novel cascade impedance control architecture designed for the upper limb exoskeleton rehabilitation robot. The proposed architecture comprises two parts: Firstly, the impedance reference trajectory is shaped from the desired trajectory utilizing the desired impedance model and feedback contact torques. The second part of the proposed controller is an adaptive backstepping control, responsible for tracking the generated impedance reference trajectory. Notably, the proposed adaptive backstepping impedance controller is non-model-based control approach, eliminating the need for the robot's model. Furthermore, a genetic algorithm is employed as an offline tuning method for the inner position loop controller, namely the …
