Design And Implementation Of A New Connection Admission Control Algorithm Using A Multistate Traffic Source Model, Robert Engel Jan 1997

Design And Implementation Of A New Connection Admission Control Algorithm Using A Multistate Traffic Source Model, Robert Engel

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This report develops a practical method for connection admission control in ATM networks. The method is based on a virtual cell loss probability criterion, is designed to handle heterogeneous traffic types and allows each traffic source to be described by an individual finite-state model with as many states as are needed to describe the source traffic. To make connection admission decisions with respect to individual links, an aggregate finite state model is computed from the individual models and used to estimate the virtual cell loss probabilities. To reduce the computational requirements for maintaining the aggregate traffic model, the aggregate model …

Noise-Tolerant Distribution-Free Learning Of General Geometric Concepts, Nader H. Bshouty, Sally A. Goldman, H. David Mathias, Subhash Suri, Hisao Tamaki Jan 1997

Noise-Tolerant Distribution-Free Learning Of General Geometric Concepts, Nader H. Bshouty, Sally A. Goldman, H. David Mathias, Subhash Suri, Hisao Tamaki

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We present an efficient algorithm for PAC-learning a very general class of geometric concepts over Rd for fixed d. More specifically, let T be any set of s halfspaces. Let x = (x1,...,xd) be an arbitrary point in Rd. With each t Є T we associate a boolean indicator function It(x) which is 1 if and only if x is in the halfspace t. The concept class Cds that we study consists of all concepts formed by any boolean function over It1, ...Its for ti Є T. This class is much more general than any geometric concept class known to …

An Algorithm For Message Delivery In A Micromobility Environment, Amy L. Murphy, Gruia-Catalin Roman, George Varghese Jan 1997

An Algorithm For Message Delivery In A Micromobility Environment, Amy L. Murphy, Gruia-Catalin Roman, George Varghese

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

With recent advances in wireless communication and the ubiquity of laptops, mobile computing has become an important research area. An essential problem in mobile computing is the delivery of a message from a source to either a single mobile node, unicast, or to a group of mobile nodes, multicast. Standard solutions proposed for macromobility (Mobile IP) and micromobility (cellular phones) for the unicast problem rely on tracking the mobile node. Tracking solutions scale badly when mobile nodes move frequently, and do not generalize well to multicast delivery. Our paper proposes a new message delivery algorithm for micromobility based on a …

Costs Of Constraint Based Networks On A Sphere, Hongzhou Ma, Jonathan Turner

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper estimates the link costs of constraint based nonblocking ATM networks on a sphere. Analytical results are obtained when switches are uniformly distributed on the surface of a unit sphere and every switch has source and sink capacity of one, and the results are compared with simulations.

The Design And Performance Of A Real-Time Corba Event Service, Timothy H. Harrison, David L. Levine, Douglas C. Schmidt Jan 1997

The Design And Performance Of A Real-Time Corba Event Service, Timothy H. Harrison, David L. Levine, Douglas C. Schmidt

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The CORBA Event Service provides a flexible model for asynchronous communication among objects. However, the standard CORBA Event Service specification lacks important features required by real-time applications. For instance, operational flight programs for fighter aircraft have complex real-time processing requirements. This paper describes the design and performance of an object-oriented, real-time implementation of the CORBA Event Service that is designed to meet these requirements. This paper makes three contributions to the design and performance measurement of object-oriented real-time systems. First, it illustrates how to extend the CORBA Event Service so that it is suitable for real-time systems. These extensions support periodic …

Symmetrical Routes And Reverse Path Congestion Control, Rajib Ghosh, George Varghese Jan 1997

Symmetrical Routes And Reverse Path Congestion Control, Rajib Ghosh, George Varghese

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We describe new mechanisms to deal with asymmetries that arise in routing protocols. We show how to avoid route asymmetries (due to non-unique shortest paths) by adding random integer link costs. We show in detail how RIP can be modified to avoid route asymmetry with high probability, without affecting either its efficiency or performance metrics such as convergence time. Symmetrical intra-domain routing also makes possible a new form of congestion control that we call Reverse Path Congestion Control (RPCC). We show, using simulations, that RPCC can augment existing TCP congestion control mechanisms to improve start up behavior and to avoid …

Reasoning About Code Mobility With Mobile Unity, Gian Pietro Picco, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Peter J. Mccann Jan 1997

Reasoning About Code Mobility With Mobile Unity, Gian Pietro Picco, Gruia-Catalin Roman, Peter J. Mccann

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Advancements in network technology have led to the emergence of new computing paradigms that challenge established programming practices by employing weak forms of consistency and dynamic forms of binding. Code mobility, for instance, allows for invocation-time binding between a code fragment and the location where it executes. Similarly, mobile computing allows hosts (and the software they execute) to alter their physical location. Despite apparent similarities, the two paradigms are distinct in their treatment of location and movement. This paper seeks to uncover a common foundation for the two paradigms by exploring the manner in which stereotypical forms of code mobility …

Antiplane Shear Of A Strip Containing A Staggered Array Of Rigid Line Inclusions, G. Kerr, G. Melrose, J. Tweed Jan 1997

Antiplane Shear Of A Strip Containing A Staggered Array Of Rigid Line Inclusions, G. Kerr, G. Melrose, J. Tweed

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Motivated by the increased use of fibre-reinforced materials, we illustrate how the effective elastic modulus of an isotropic and homogeneous material can be increased by the insertion of rigid inclusions. Specifically we consider the two-dimensional antiplane shear problem for a strip of material. The strip is reinforced by introducing two sets of ribbon-like, rigid inclusions perpendicular to the faces of the strip. The strip is then subjected to a prescribed uniform displacement difference between its faces, see Figure 1. it should be noted that the problem posed is equivalent to that of the uniform antiplane shear problem for an infinite …

Improved Heterogeneous Distance Functions, Tony R. Martinez, D. Randall Wilson Jan 1997

Improved Heterogeneous Distance Functions, Tony R. Martinez, D. Randall Wilson

Faculty Publications

Instance-based learning techniques typically handle continuous and linear input values well, but often do not handle nominal input attributes appropriately. The Value Difference Metric (VDM) was designed to find reasonable distance values between nominal attribute values, but it largely ignores continuous attributes, requiring discretization to map continuous values into nominal values. This paper proposes three new heterogeneous distance functions, called the Heterogeneous Value Difference Metric (HVDM), the Interpolated Value Difference Metric (IVDM), and the Windowed Value Difference Metric (WVDM). These new distance functions are designed to handle applications with nominal attributes, continuous attributes, or both. In experiments on 48 applications …

Faster Ray Tracing Using Adaptive Grids, Thomas W. Sederberg, Krysztof S. Klimaszewski Jan 1997

Faster Ray Tracing Using Adaptive Grids, Thomas W. Sederberg, Krysztof S. Klimaszewski

Faculty Publications

A new hybrid approach is presented which outperforms the regular grid technique in scenes with highly irregular object distributions by a factor of hundreds, and combined with an area interpolator, by a factor of thousands. Much has been said about scene independence of different acceleration techniques and the alleged superiority of one approach over another. Several theoretical and practical studies conducted in the past have led to the same conclusion: a space partitioning method that allows the fastest rendering of one scene often fails with another. Specialization may be the answer. This has always been pursued, consciously or not, in …

On Unifying Time And Uncertainty: The Probabilistic Temporal Network, Joel D. Young Dec 1996

On Unifying Time And Uncertainty: The Probabilistic Temporal Network, Joel D. Young

Theses and Dissertations

Complex real-world systems consist of collections of interacting processes/events. These processes change over time in response to both internal and external stimuli as well as to the passage of time. Many domains such as real-time systems diagnosis, (mechanized) story understanding, planning and scheduling, and financial forecasting require the capability to model complex systems under a unified framework to deal with both time and uncertainty. Existing uncertainty representations and existing temporal models already provide rich languages for capturing uncertainty and temporal information, respectively. Unfortunately, these partial solutions have made it extremely difficult to unify time and uncertainty in a way that …

Student Modeling In An Intelligent Tutoring System, Jeremy E. Thompson Dec 1996

Student Modeling In An Intelligent Tutoring System, Jeremy E. Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores a new approach to modeling the student in an intelligent tutoring system (ITS), by providing a student model which learns new solutions from the student. A prototype of the new approach to ITS is demonstrated in the Euclidean geometry domain. Complete C++, CLIPS, and Tcl/Tk code listings are included in the appendices for reference. Adaptable multiple software agents were targeted for implementation, based on current literature. However, the student model is found to be maintainable without multiple software agents, while still allowing for tracking several possible solution paths when monitoring student solutions. This capability contradicts previous research …

Algorithms For Adapting Materialised Views In Data Warehouses, Mukesh Mohania, Guozhu Dong Dec 1996

Algorithms For Adapting Materialised Views In Data Warehouses, Mukesh Mohania, Guozhu Dong

Kno.e.sis Publications

In this paper we consider the problem of materialised view adaptation in data warehouses. Materialised views are important in data warehousing where they are used to speed up query processing on large amounts of data. User requirements change over time, which may change the definitions of views dynamically. For such situations, the question arises whether the materialised views should be recomputed from scratch for every change in the definition or they should be obtained by adapting old materialised views. Changes to a view definition may be expensive, if the view is recomputed from scratch. Therefore, it is worthwhile to examine …

Reverse Engineering Of Computer-Based Navy Systems, Lonnie R. Welch, Guohui Yu, Binoy Ravindran, Franz J. Kurfess, Jorge Henriques, Mark Wilson, Antonio L. Samuel, Michael W. Masters Dec 1996

Reverse Engineering Of Computer-Based Navy Systems, Lonnie R. Welch, Guohui Yu, Binoy Ravindran, Franz J. Kurfess, Jorge Henriques, Mark Wilson, Antonio L. Samuel, Michael W. Masters

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The financial pressure to meet the need for change in computer-based systems through evolution rather than through revolution has spawned the discipline of reengineering. One driving factor of reengineering is that it is increasingly becoming the case that enhanced requirements placed on computer-based systems are overstressing the processing resources of the systems. Thus, the distribution of processing load over highly parallel and distributed hardware architectures has become part of the reengineering process for computer-based Navy systems.

This paper presents an intermediate representation (IR) for capturing features of computer-based systems to enable reengineering for concurrency. A novel feature of the IR …

A Specialization Toolkit To Increase The Diversity Of Operating Systems, Calton Pu, Andrew P. Black, Crispin Cowan, Jonathan Walpole, Charles Consel

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Virus and worm attacks that exploit system implementation details can be countered with a diversified set of implementations. Furthermore, immune systems show that attacks from previously unknown organisms require effective dynamic response. In the Synthetix project, we have been developing a specialization toolkit to improve the performance of operating system kernels. The toolkit helps programmers generate and manage diverse specialized implementations of software modules. The Tempo-C specializer tool generates different versions for both compile-time and run-time specialization. We are now adapting the toolkit to improve operating system survivability against implementations attacks.

An Efficient Collective Communication Library For Pvm, Chirapol Mathawaphan Dec 1996

An Efficient Collective Communication Library For Pvm, Chirapol Mathawaphan

Masters Theses

PVM enables the use of network of workstations for parallel and distributed computation. PVM provides the message-passing primitives which include those for point-to-point communication and collective communications. The current approaches for the collective communication operations in PVM use algorithms that do not exhibit good performance.

In this thesis, we develop new approaches to improve the performance of collective communication operations in PVM by using shared memory with IP broadcasting and IP multicasting mechanism. We have implemented these approaches and have run extensive tests. This report shows the comparison of the time used by current approaches and our approaches.

Utilizing Bayesian Techniques For User Interface Intelligence, Robert A. Harrington Dec 1996

Utilizing Bayesian Techniques For User Interface Intelligence, Robert A. Harrington

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to study the injection of an intelligent agent into modern user interface technology. This agent is intended to manage the complex interactions between the software system and the user, thus making the complexities transparent to the user. The background study will show that while interesting and promising research exists in the domain of intelligent interface agents, very little research has been published that indicates true success in representing the uncertainty involved in predicting user intent. The interface agent architecture presented in this thesis will offer one solution for solving the problem using a newly …

Dynamic Relevance Filtering In Asynchronous Transfer Mode-Based Distributed Interactive Simulation Exercises, David T. Hightower Dec 1996

Dynamic Relevance Filtering In Asynchronous Transfer Mode-Based Distributed Interactive Simulation Exercises, David T. Hightower

Theses and Dissertations

As Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) exercises continue to grow in scale, the need to support a large number of players has become apparent. The demands on the network and the simulation hosts in large exercises, though, have proved to be prohibitive, requiring significant computational overhead to filter through the information and extract what is relevant to a particular simulation. Some mechanism is needed to reduce irrelevant network traffic received by a system, while increasing the bandwidth available for the DIS exercise. Previous research efforts in this area have centered primarily on fixed geographic partitions of the battlespace to reduce the …

Cross-Input Amortization Captures The Diffuse Adversary, Neal E. Young Dec 1996

Cross-Input Amortization Captures The Diffuse Adversary, Neal E. Young

Computer Science Technical Reports

Koutsoupias and Papadimitriou recently raised the question of how well deterministic on-line paging algorithms can do against a certain class of adversarially biased random inputs. Such an input is given in an on-line fashion; the adversary determines the next request probabilistically, subject to the constraint that no page may be requested with probability more than a fixed $\epsilon>0$. In this paper, we answer their question by estimating, within a factor of two, the optimal competitive ratio of any deterministic on-line strategy against this adversary. We further analyze randomized on-line strategies, obtaining upper and lower bounds within a factor of …

Pulse Coupled Neural Networks For The Segmentation Of Magnetic Resonance Brain Images, Shane L. Abrahamson Dec 1996

Pulse Coupled Neural Networks For The Segmentation Of Magnetic Resonance Brain Images, Shane L. Abrahamson

Theses and Dissertations

This research develops an automated method for segmenting Magnetic Resonance (MR) brain images based on Pulse Coupled Neural Networks (PCNN). MR brain image segmentation has proven difficult, primarily due to scanning artifacts such as interscan and intrascan intensity inhomogeneities. The method developed and presented here uses a PCNN to both filter and segment MR brain images. The technique begins by preprocessing images with a PCNN filter to reduce scanning artifacts. Images are then contrast enhanced via histogram equalization. Finally, a PCNN is used to segment the images to arrive at the final result. Modifications to the original PCNN model are …

Artificial Cochlea Design Using Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems, George C. Dalton Ii Dec 1996

Artificial Cochlea Design Using Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems, George C. Dalton Ii

Theses and Dissertations

The use of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) in the design of an artificial cochlea is investigated in depth. Interdigitated finger (comb), cantilever, bridge, and mirror resonators are presented as possible devices used to implement the artificial cochlea. These resonators are demonstrated to be extremely high Q devices, capable of being tuned with a simple DC bias. This suggests a possible change to existing cochlea models that claim highly complex AC feedback as being responsible for changes in the damping of the basilar membrane. The new cochlea model presented here, using MEMS to approximate the tuning of the basilar membrane, may be …

Evaluation Of Segmentation For Bone Structures In 3d Rendering Of Ultrasound Residual Limb Images, Min C. Baker Dec 1996

Evaluation Of Segmentation For Bone Structures In 3d Rendering Of Ultrasound Residual Limb Images, Min C. Baker

Theses and Dissertations

Prosthetists today widely practice manual socket fitting, which produces subjective, inconsistent results. To address this problem, the Computerized Anthropometry Research and Design (CARD) Laboratory is developing a computer-aided socket design system that acquires ultrasound datasets of an amputee's residual limb, creates a 3D model, and helps identify load- bearing and pressure-relief areas. This research project focuses on providing 3D visualization of a residual limb to support the CARD Laboratory's efforts. Creating the 3D model of the skin and two bone contours requires two major steps: segmentation to identify the objects of interest and a surface tracking algorithm to generate the …

Simulation Based Performance Evaluation Of Resource Allocation Algorithms For Implementation In The Shf-Dama Satellite Network, Eric P. Hobson Dec 1996

Simulation Based Performance Evaluation Of Resource Allocation Algorithms For Implementation In The Shf-Dama Satellite Network, Eric P. Hobson

Theses and Dissertations

Sponsored by DISA, the SHF-DAMA Standard addresses the warfighter's requirements for flexible, reliable, and efficient (technically and fiscally) satellite communications. The Standard proposes a system supporting both packet data transfer and single-channel-per-carrier voice and data circuits assigned on a demand basis. The Standard does not address management of the DSCS 3 transponder's bandwidth and power resources among priority classes of users. This effort characterizes the SHF-DAMA system's performance over each combination of the following resource management algorithm features: (1) preemption enabled and disabled; (2) using the Standard-specified collision resolution technique and a binary exponential backoff; (3) using complete partitioning, complete …

Refined Genetic Algorithms For Polypeptide Structure Prediction, Charles E. Kaiser Jr. Dec 1996

Refined Genetic Algorithms For Polypeptide Structure Prediction, Charles E. Kaiser Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Accurate and reliable prediction of macromolecular structures has eluded researchers for nearly 40 years. Prediction via energy minimization assumes the native conformation has the globally minimal energy potential. An exhaustive search is impossible since for molecules of normal size, the size of the search space exceeds the size of the universe. Domain knowledge sources, such as the Brookhaven PDB can be mined for constraints to limit the search space. Genetic algorithms (GAs) are stochastic, population based, search algorithms of polynomial (P) time complexity that can produce semi-optimal solutions for problems of nondeterministic polynomial (NP) time complexity such as PSP. Three …

Analysis And Design Of Standard Telerobotic Control Software, Matthew L. June Dec 1996

Analysis And Design Of Standard Telerobotic Control Software, Matthew L. June

Theses and Dissertations

The Robotics and Automation Center for Excellence (RACE) has defined an open telerobotics control architecture. This architecture, called the Unified Telerobotic Architecture Project (UTAP), is a proposed standard for all Air Force telerobotic systems. Implementation of UTAP will reduce the cost of robotic applications by increasing software modularity, portability, and reusability. This thesis continued the effort to prove the feasibility of UTAP. In December, 1995, 1st Lt Anchor implemented a portion of the UTAP specification on a PUMA robot. The UTAP-compliant controller exhibited some degradation in the system performance. However, the performance degradation was not fully measured. This thesis extended …

Elicitation Of Formal Software Specifications From An Object-Oriented Domain Model, Timothy Karagias Dec 1996

Elicitation Of Formal Software Specifications From An Object-Oriented Domain Model, Timothy Karagias

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to provide automated support for the generation of formal software specifications would lead to decreased software development time. By eliciting the needed information from a software developer and harvesting the proper parts of a domain model, a software specifications document could be created. This research establishes the feasibility of producing customized software specifications based on an object-oriented domain model. The research was conducted in three phases. The first phase was to define the requirements for the Elicitor Harvester. Those requirements were balanced between the capabilities of the existing Knowledge Based Software Engineering (KBSE) software used at AFIT and …

Molecular Articulation In Response To Interactive Atomic Forces In Docker, Todd R. Kellett Dec 1996

Molecular Articulation In Response To Interactive Atomic Forces In Docker, Todd R. Kellett

Theses and Dissertations

Molecular docking aids in the design of materials supporting the current and future needs of the warfighter by simulating the real-world results of combining molecules. Specifically, it supports research and development in novel non-linear optical materials for laser-hardening and other advanced optical applications. Potential uses for these materials range from personnel and optical system laser protection to holographic information displays. DOCKER, our baseline docking system, minimizes the computational overhead of the simulation by modeling the molecules as rigid objects. This simplification can cause DOCKER's solutions to disagree with the real-world results, because molecules flex as they react to one another …

Implementation Of An Ada95 Crosscompiler For The Real-Time Executive For Military Systems (Rtems), Kendall M. Lemley Jr. Dec 1996

Implementation Of An Ada95 Crosscompiler For The Real-Time Executive For Military Systems (Rtems), Kendall M. Lemley Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis represents a continuation of the assessment of the Unified Telerobotics Architecture Project (UTAP), a proposed Air Force standard. This architecture was developed by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the National Institute of Standards under contract to the Air Force Materiel Command Robotics and Automation Center of Excellence at Kelly AFB, Texas. Due to operating system constraints, the only UTAP implementation to date has required a separate software interface layer, adding complexity and overhead to the overall system, while reducing portability. This thesis proposes a long term effort to design and implement UTAP-compliant application software devoid of this …

A Test-Case Based Approach To Bayesian Knowledge Base Incompleteness Detection And Correction, Louise J. Lyle Dec 1996

A Test-Case Based Approach To Bayesian Knowledge Base Incompleteness Detection And Correction, Louise J. Lyle

Theses and Dissertations

This work develops tools and techniques to identify particular Bayesian Knowledge Base (BKB) incompletenesses, and to modify the existing knowledge-base (KB) structure to correct these problems. The methodology performs manually or automatically, informing the user of either problems causing the incompleteness, or of details resulting from the automatic knowledge-base correction. The proposed methodology is designed for integration with BVAL, to augment BVAL's validation techniques.
