Sorting In Parallel, Ran Libeskind-Hadas
Sorting In Parallel, Ran Libeskind-Hadas
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
In 1842, L.F. Menabrea anticipated the benefits of parallel computing in an article that appeared in the Swiss Journal Bibliotheque universelle de Geneve:
When a long series of identical computations is to be performed, such as those required for the formation of numerical tables, the machine can be brought into play so as to give several results at the same time, which will greatly abridge the whole amount of the processes.
Although more than a century passed before Menabrea's vision became a reality, today parallel computers with hundreds and even thousands of processors are used in a broad range …

Tree-Based Multicasting In Wormhole-Routed Irregular Topologies, Ran Libeskind-Hadas, Dominic Mazzoni '99, Ranjith Rajagopalan '99
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
A deadlock-free tree-based multicast routing algorithm is presented for all direct networks, regardless of interconnection topology. The algorithm delivers a message to any number of destinations using only a single startup phase. In contrast to existing tree-based schemes, this algorithm applies to all interconnection topologies, requires only fixed-sized input buffers that are independent of maximum message length, and uses a single asynchronous flit replication mechanism. The theoretical basis of the technique used here is sufficiently general to develop other tree-based multicasting algorithms for regular and irregular topologies. Simulation results demonstrate that this tree-based algorithm provides a very promising means of …

Ber-Based Call Admission In Wavelength-Routed Optical Networks, Debasish Datta, Byrav Ramamurthy, Helena Feng, Jonathan P. Heritage, Biswanath Mukherjee
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Consider a wavelength-routed optical network in which nodes, i.e., multiwave length cross-connect switches (XCSs), are connected by fiber to form an arbitrary physical topology. A new call is admitted into the network if an all-optical lightpath can be established between the call’s source and destination nodes. Wavelength converters are assumed absent in this work.
Development And Utilization Of Parallel Generic Algorithms For Scientific Computations, Atanas Radenski, Andrew Vann, Boyana Norris
Development And Utilization Of Parallel Generic Algorithms For Scientific Computations, Atanas Radenski, Andrew Vann, Boyana Norris
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters
We develop generic parallel algorithms as extensible modules that encapsulate related classes and parallel methods. Extensible modules define common parallel structures, such as meshes, pipelines, or master-server networks in problem-independent manner. Such modules can be extended with sequential domain-specific code in order to derive particular parallel applications. In this paper, we first outline the essence of extensible modules. Then, we focus on a case study of the cellular automaton, a message-parallel generic algorithm from which we derive diverse parallel scientific applications.
Virtual Reality Modelling Of A Cnc Machine, Damian O'Sullivan
Virtual Reality Modelling Of A Cnc Machine, Damian O'Sullivan
Theses
The increasing importance of training and upgrading skills has led to the use of new interactive technologies in the development of more effective training tools. Previous techniques for training Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine operators, while excellent for their time, varied from brief inexpensive tutorials to expensive on the job training. A CNC machine uses a computer to perform the functions of the machine using a part program stored in the memory of the computer. This thesis describes a Virtual Reality (VR) model of a CNC milling machine, implemented within a VR environment representing a CNC workshop. Its development and …

Functional Radionuclide Imaging Algorithm Based On The Appended Curve Deconvolution Technique And Its Use In The Diagnosis Of Renovascular Hypertension, İrfan Karagöz, Hi̇kmet Bayhan
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, a new method called the pixel basis functional radionuclide imaging (PBFRI) algorithm based on the appended curve deconvolution technique, in order to be able to increase the medical diagnostic capability of a conventional gamma camera, is presented together with the clinical results. In the PBFRI method, retention function of each pixel is obtained from the renograms and cardiac curves generated by processing the filtered segments of the kidney and heart, using a special deconvolution method. The deconvolution operation is done by using the Fourier transform technique. High frequency artifacts presented by the Fourier transform are removed by …
Contributions To Supervised Learning Of Real-Valued Functions Using Neural Networks, Victor David Sanchez Aylas
Contributions To Supervised Learning Of Real-Valued Functions Using Neural Networks, Victor David Sanchez Aylas
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents a new strategy for the automatic design of neural networks. The learning environment addressed is supervised learning from examples. Specifically, Radial Basis Functions (RBF) networks learning real-valued functions of real vectors as in non-linear regression applications are considered. The strategy is based upon the application of strong theoretical relationships between RBF networks and methods from approximation theory, robust statistics, and computational learning theory.
The complexity of the network design is examined in detail from the formal definition of the learning problem to the establishment of the corresponding optimization problem. A novel strategy for the systematic and automatic …

The Auditory Display In Interactive Courseware: Moving Human Factors Into Computer Education, David T. Lauret
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The arrival of inexpensive high fidelity audio capabilities for personal computers has been accompanied by sweeping claims of enhanced educational effectiveness. Research has only served to confuse these claims with both significant and non-significant findings. This may be due partly to the single dimensional model which has been assumed when examining audio. When computer-based audio is examined as a multi-dimensional display analogous in capability and function to the more familiar visual display (computer screen), a different picture emerges. Although it is now clear that integrated audio can enhance learning, the instructional designer is still left with little guidance whether or …

A Simplified Faceted Approach To Information Retrieval For Reusable Software Classification, Victor Allen Nguyen
A Simplified Faceted Approach To Information Retrieval For Reusable Software Classification, Victor Allen Nguyen
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Software Reuse is widely recognized as the most promising technique presently available in reducing the cost of software production. It is the adaptation or incorporation of previously developed software components, designs or other software-related artifacts (i.e. test plans) into new software or software development regimes. Researchers and vendors are doubling their efforts and devoting their time primarily to the topic of software reuse. Most have focused on mechanisms to construct reusable software but few have focused on the problem of discovering components or designs to meet specific needs. In order for software reuse to be successful, it must be perceived …
Genetic Approach For The Determination Of Object Parameters From X Ray Projections, Tayfun Günel, Sedef Kent
Genetic Approach For The Determination Of Object Parameters From X Ray Projections, Tayfun Günel, Sedef Kent
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, a new method is presented, based on genetic algorithms for determining object parameters such as radii and/or attenuation coefficients with some assumptions and estimating a cross-sectional image of an object from its projections obtained by X ray illumination. After it was tested for projections degraded by different random noise levels, it was observed that the genetic and fuzzy genetic algorithms improved the signal to noise ratio of the projections. The fuzzy genetic algorithm gave better results than the genetic algorithm.
A Fast Parallel Algorithm To Recognize P4-Sparse Graphs, Rong Lin, Stephan Olariu
A Fast Parallel Algorithm To Recognize P4-Sparse Graphs, Rong Lin, Stephan Olariu
Computer Science Faculty Publications
A number of problems in mobile computing, group-based collaboration, automated theorem proving, networking, scheduling, and cluster analysis suggested the study of graphs featuring certain “local density” characteristics. Typically, the notion of local density is equated with the absence of chordless paths of length three or more. Recently, a new metric for local density has been proposed, allowing a number of such induced paths to occur. More precisely, a graphG is called P4-sparse if no set of five vertices inG induces more than one chordless path of length three. P4-sparse graphs generalize the well-known class of cographs corresponding to …
Creating A Canonical Scientific And Technical Information Classification System For Ncstrl+, Melissa E. Tiffany, Michael L. Nelson
Creating A Canonical Scientific And Technical Information Classification System For Ncstrl+, Melissa E. Tiffany, Michael L. Nelson
Computer Science Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is to describe the new subject classification system for the NCSTRL+ project. NCSTRL+ is a canonical digital library (DL) based on the Networked Computer Science Technical Report Library (NCSTRL). The current NCSTRL+ classification system uses the NASA Scientific and Technical (STI) subject classifications, which has a bias towards the aerospace, aeronautics, and engineering disciplines. Examination of other scientific and technical information classification systems showed similar discipline-centric weaknesses. Traditional, library-oriented classification systems represented all disciplines, but were too generalized to serve the needs of a scientific and technically oriented digital library. Lack of a suitable existing …

Buckets: Aggregative, Intelligent Agents For Publishing, Michael L. Nelson, Kurt Maly, Stewart N. T. Shen, Mohammad Zubair
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Buckets are an aggregative, intelligent construct for publishing in digital libraries. The goal of research projects is to produce information. This information is often instantiated in several forms, differentiated by semantic types (report, software, video, datasets, etc.). A given semantic type can be further differentiated by syntactic representations as well (PostScript version, PDF version, Word version, etc.). Although the information was created together and subtle relationships can exist between them, different semantic instantiations are generally segregated along currently obsolete media boundaries. Reports are placed in report archives, software might go into a software archive, but most of the data and …

A multidatabase system (MDBS) allows the users to simultaneously access autonomous, heterogeneous databases using a single data model and a query language. This provides for achieving interoperability among heterogeneous, federated DBMSs. In this paper, we describe the interoperability infrastructure of a multidatabase system, namely METU Interoperable DBMS (MIND). The architecture of MIND is based on OMG distributed object management model. It is implemented on top of a CORBA compliant ORB, namely, ObjectBroker. The interface of the generic database object is defined in CORBA IDL and multiple implementations of this interface, one for each component DBMSs, namely, Oracle 7, Sybase, Adabas …
Performance Of Prefiltered Model-Based Frequency Estimators, Mustafa A. Altınkaya, Bülent Sankur, Emin Anarım
Performance Of Prefiltered Model-Based Frequency Estimators, Mustafa A. Altınkaya, Bülent Sankur, Emin Anarım
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this work, the performance improvement due to prefiltering of inputs in model-based frequency estimators is investigated based on simulation experiments. Initial estimates on the tone frequency locations, which are obtained via DFT peak picking type preanalysis, are used to design a prefilter to remove noise and interference. The simulations indicate that prefiltering can improve the accuracy of Pisarenko and AR frequency estimators and MUSIC and KT frequency estimators with low subspace order significantly. The SNR thresholds of model-based frequency estimators are lowered by prefiltering. Additionally, interesting trade-offs between prefiltering gain and the gain due to subspace noise filtering have …

Analysis Of Images Of Cells With Neurites, Florence Cloppet, Georges Stamon
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This study is concerned with the segmentation of cytological images and extraction of cellular entities in order to provide quantitative data about the number of cells in culture (statistical tests, morphology, model of evolution, etc). This quantitative supply is useful in biology to evaluate the consequences of the application of active substances on morphological changes and cellular viability. It is related to the conception of a system dedicated to automatic analysis of cell images, in order to evaluate the effects of drugs on the morphology of neuronal cells. We use a cooperative region / contour segmentation, which gives closed polygonal …
Imaging Electrical Current Density Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, B. Murat Eyüpoğlu, Ravinder Reddy, John S. Leigh
Imaging Electrical Current Density Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, B. Murat Eyüpoğlu, Ravinder Reddy, John S. Leigh
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this study, images of nonuniform and uniform electric current density in conductor phantoms, which contain magnetic resonance active nuclei, are produced using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). A standard spin echo pulse sequence is used, with the addition of a bipolar current pulse. The flux density parallel to the main magnetic field, generated by the current pulse, is encoded in the phase of the complex MR image. The spatial distribution of magnetic flux density is extracted from the phase image. Current density is calculated using the magnetic flux density. This fairly recent technique is known as Magnetic Resonance Current Density …

Use Of The Magnetic Field Generated By The Internal Distribution Of Injected Currents For Electrical Impedance Tomography (Mr-Eit), Y. Zi̇ya İder, Özlem Bi̇rgül
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In two dimensional conventional Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT), volume conductor is probed by means of injected currents, and peripheral voltage measurements are used as input to the reconstruction algorithm. The current that flows in the 2D object creates magnetic fields that are perpendicular to the plane of imaging. Such magnetic fields can be measured using magnetic resonance tomography. In this study, use of this magnetic field generated by the injected currents, for the purpose of reconstructing the conductivity distribution, is studied. Sensitivity matrix relating the magnetic field to the element conductivities is calculated using the Finite Element Method and Biot-Savart …

Cardiac Passive Acoustic Localization: Cardiopal, Yildirim Bahadirlar, Hali̇l Özcan Gülçür
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A novel non-invasive system is proposed as an adjunct diagnostic tool for cardiac disorders, which is based on processing of the heart sounds acquired using a specially designed 2-D passive acoustic array. In addition to the acoustic array, the system consists of a personal computer, specially developed instrumentation and interface hardware and an adaptive array processing scheme. A signal model is constructed in accordance with the basic assumptions made for very near-field low frequency sources. The multiple signal characterization (MUSIC) method together with the model is used for the localization of assumed point sources in the heart. Locations of the …

Router Plugins: A Modular And Extensible Software Framework For Modern High Performance Integrated Services Routers, Dan Decasper, Zubin Dittia, Guru Parulkar, Bernhard Plattner
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Present day routers typically employ monolithic operating systems which are not easily upgraded and extensible. WIth the rapid rate of protocol development it is becoming increasingly important to dynamically upgrade router software in an incremental fashion. We have designed and implemented a high performance, modular, extended integrated services router software architecture in the NetBSD operating system kernel. This architecture allows code modules, called plugins, to be dynamically added and configured at run time. One of the novel features of our design is the ability to bind different plugins to individual flows; this allows for distinct plugin implementations to seamlessly coexist …

Fault-Tolerant Mobile Ip, Rajib Ghosh, George Varghese
Fault-Tolerant Mobile Ip, Rajib Ghosh, George Varghese
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
We describe mechanisms to enhance the reliability and performance of Mobile IP. In Mobile IP today home agents and foreign agents are single points of failure and potential performance bottlenecks. For example, a home agent crash can lead to communication failure if the mobile is away from home. In this paper we describe new mechanisms to allow redundant home and foreign agents. Redundant agents can take over from each other in case of failure, and also split load amongst themselves. Our mechanisms are simple, transparent to existing mobile nodes, and compatible with the existing Mobile IP specification. We have implemented …
Integrating A Constraint Mechanism With The Javabeans Model, William M. Shapiro
Integrating A Constraint Mechanism With The Javabeans Model, William M. Shapiro
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
The JavaBeans component model allows users to plug together software components to create Java applications by specifying simple relationships between component events and properties. This paper describes work on augmenting the simple JavaBeans model with a multi-way constraint mechanism that allows users to graphically specify more complex multi-way contraints, resolve cyclical constraints between bean properties and graphically layout bean components. We also discuss weaknesses in the JavaBeans model and Java Abstract Windowing Toolkit (AWT) that were discovered while integrating a constraint mechanism with JavaBeans.

Application management refers to the process of making software applications available to end-users and providing automated mechanisms for launching and joining such applications. The Programmers' Playground is a computing environment for creating distributed applications from modular, reusable components. This paper discusses a set of tools that enable application developers to: (1) design and debug Playground distributed applications from existing "off-the-shelf" components using a visual configuration tool, (2) make new application components available on the Internet through a "launcher" service, and (3) make complete distributed applications available via a World Wide Web interface, enabling end-users to launch and join the applications …
Congestion Control In Multicast Transport Protocols, Rajib Ghosh, George Varghese
Congestion Control In Multicast Transport Protocols, Rajib Ghosh, George Varghese
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
We discuss congestion control mechanisms in multicast transport protocols and we propose TCP-M - a TCP-friendly Multicast transport protocol. TCP-M uses IP multicast to deliver data packets and acknowledgements to provide reliability. Ack implosion at the source is prevented by fusing acknowledgements at some intermediate routers. TCP-M reacts to network congestion exactly like TCP by having the sender emulate a TCP sender.
