Surface Reconstruction Based On Lower Dimensional Localized Delaunay Triangulation, Gopi Meenakshisundaram
Surface Reconstruction Based On Lower Dimensional Localized Delaunay Triangulation, Gopi Meenakshisundaram
Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports
We present a fast, memory efficient algorithm that generates a manifold triangular mesh S passing through a set of unorganized points Pc R3. Nothing is assumed about the geometry, topology or presence of boundaries in the data set except that P is sampled from a real manifold surface. The speed of our algorithm is derived from a projection-based approach we use to determine the incident faces on a point. We define our sampling criteria to sample the surface and guarantee a topologically correct mesh after surface reconstruction for such a sampled surface. We also present a new algorithm to find …
Image-Driven Simplification And Optimization Of Polygonal Models, Peter Lindstrom
Image-Driven Simplification And Optimization Of Polygonal Models, Peter Lindstrom
Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports
Model simplification is often used in computer graphics to reduce the complexity of large polygonal models. For many graphics applications, the goal of this process is to produce a coarser model that is visually similar to the original, allowing the complex original model to be replaced with little or no loss in perceived quality. Existing simplification techniques, however, rely on geometry-based heuristics as an indirect indicator of visual similarity. We propose a novel image-driven simplification method that uses rendered images of a model and an image metric as a means of measuring visual similarity. Using this approach, changes in appearance …

Lsmac And Lsnait: Two Approaches For Cluster-Based Scalable Web Servers, Xuehong Gana, Trevor Schroeder, Steve Goddard, Byrav Ramamurthy
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Server responsiveness and scalability are more important than ever in today’s client/server dominated network environments. Recently, researchers have begun to consider cluster-based computers using commodity hardware as an alternative to expensive specialized hardware for building scalable Web servers. In this paper, we present performance results comparing two cluster-based Web servers based on different server infrastructures: MAC-based dispatching (LSMAC) and IP-based dispatching (LSNAT). Both cluster-based server systems were implemented as application-space programs running on commodity hardware. We point out the advantages and disadvantages of both systems. We also identify when servers should be clustered and when clustering will not improve performance.
Virtual Topology Reconfiguration Of Wavelength-Routed Optical Wdm Networks, Byrav Ramamurthy, Ashok Ramakrishnan
Virtual Topology Reconfiguration Of Wavelength-Routed Optical Wdm Networks, Byrav Ramamurthy, Ashok Ramakrishnan
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
The bandwidth requirements of the Internet are increasing every day and there are newer and more bandwidth-thirsty applications emerging on the horizon. Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is the next step towards leveraging the capabilities of the optical fiber, especially for wide-area backbone networks. The ability to switch a signal at intermediate nodes in a WDM network based on their wavelengths is known as wavelength-routing. One of the greatest advantages of using wavelength-routing WDM is the ability to create a virtual topology different from the physical topology of the underlying network. This virtual topology can be reconfigured when necessary, to improve …
Optical Communication Networks For The Next-Generation Internet, Arun K. Somani, Byrav Ramamurthy
Optical Communication Networks For The Next-Generation Internet, Arun K. Somani, Byrav Ramamurthy
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
Computer and telecommunication networks are changing the world dramatically and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. The Internet, primarily based on packet switches, provides very flexible data services such as e-mail and access to the World Wide Web. The Internet is a variable-delay, variable- bandwidth network that provides no guarantee on quality of service (QoS) in its initial phase. New services are being added to the pure data delivery framework of yesterday. Such high demands on capacity could lead to a “bandwidth crunch” at the core wide-area network, resulting in degradation of service quality. Fortunately, technological innovations …

Exploiting Don't Cares To Enhance Functional Tests, Mark W. Weiss, Sharad C. Seth, Shashank K. Mehta, Kent L. Einspahr
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
In simulation based design verification, deterministic or pseudo-random tests are used to check functional correctness of a design. In this paper we present a technique generating tests by specifying the don’t care inputs in the functional specifications so as to improve their coverage of both design errors and manufacturing faults. The don’t cares are chosen to maximize sensitization of signals in the circuit. The tests generated in this way require only a fraction of pseudo-exhaustive test patterns to achieve a high multiplicity of fault coverage.
Measurements Of The Structure Of Quark And Gluon Jets In Hadronic Z Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas
Measurements Of The Structure Of Quark And Gluon Jets In Hadronic Z Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
An experimental investigation of the structure of identified quark and gluon jets is presented. Observables related to both the global and internal structure of jets are measured; this allows for tests of QCD over a wide range of transverse momentum scales. The observables include distributions of jet-shape variables, the mean and standard deviation of the subjet multiplicity distribution and the fragmentation function for charged particles. The data are compared with predictions of perturbative QCD as well as QCD-based Monte Carlo models. In certain kinematic regions the measurements are sensitive mainly to perturbatively calculable effects, allowing for a test of QCD. …

Search For R-Parity Violating Decays Of Supersymmetric Particles In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Near 183 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Searches for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption that R-parity is violated via a single dominant LLE¯LLE¯, LQD¯LQD¯ or U¯D¯D¯U¯D¯D¯ coupling are performed using the data collected by the ALEPH collaboration at centre-of-mass energies of 181–184 GeV. The observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. Upper limits on the production cross-sections and lower limits on the masses of charginos, sleptons, squarks and sneutrinos are derived.

The production rates of D∗±D∗±, D∗±sDs∗±, D±D±, D0/D¯0D0/D¯0, D±sDs±, and Λ+c/Λ¯−cΛc+/Λ¯c− in Z→cc¯Z→cc¯ decays are measured using the LEP I data sample recorded by the ALEPH detector. The fractional energy spectrum of the D∗±D∗± is well described as the sum of three contributions: charm hadronisation, b hadron decays and gluon splitting into a pair of heavy quarks. The probability for a c quark to hadronise into a D∗+D∗+ is found to be f(c→D∗+)=0.233±0.010(stat.)±0.011(syst.)f(c→D∗+)=0.233±0.010(stat.)±0.011(syst.). The average fraction of the beam energy carried by D∗±D∗± mesons in Z→cc¯Z→cc¯ events is measured to be ⟨XE(D∗±)⟩cc¯=0.4878±0.0046(stat.)±0.0061(syst.).⟨XE(D∗±)⟩cc¯=0.4878±0.0046(stat.)±0.0061(syst.). An Integrated Data Mining System To Automate Discovery, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang, Ee Peng Lim
An Integrated Data Mining System To Automate Discovery, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang, Ee Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Many data analysts require tools which can integrate their database management packages (e.g. Microsoft Access) with their data analysis ones (e.g. SAS, SPSS), and provide guidance for the selection of appropriate mining algorithms. In addition, the analysts need to extract and validate statistical results to facilitate data mining. In this paper, we describe an integrated data mining system called the Linear Correlation Discovery System (LCDS) that meets the above requirement. LCDS consists of four major sub-components, two of which, the selection assistant and the statistics coupler, are discussed in this paper. The former examines the schema and instances to determine …
Solving A Supply Chain Optimization Problem Collaboratively, Hoong Chuin Lau, A. L. C. Lim, Q Liu
Solving A Supply Chain Optimization Problem Collaboratively, Hoong Chuin Lau, A. L. C. Lim, Q Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We propose a novel algorithmic framework to solve an integrated planning and scheduling problem in supply chain management. This problem involves the integration of an inventory management problem and the vehicle routing problem with time windows, both of which are known to be NP-hard. Under this framework, algorithms that solve the underlying sub-problems collaborate rigorously yet in a computationally efficient manner to arrive at a good solution. We will then present two algorithms to solve the inventory management problem: a complete mathematical model integrating integer programming with constraint programming, and an incomplete algorithm based on tabu search. We present experimental …

Methodologies. This is the first time we organize this new minitrack on electronic commerce systems development. The flexibility, scalability, user-friendliness, privacy, security, intuitiveness, and other important characteristics of electronic commerce systems make the systems development process of such systems very multifaceted and complex. Today, most electronic commerce systems are built based on intuition and rule of thumbs. Many practitioners have the misconception that there is no need for a systematic modeling and design technique for these systems. The lack of appropriate methods and methodologies to support electronic commerce systems development is another stumbling block. Most of the widely used methods are …

While distance education programs continue to expand, the occurrence of higher dropout rates in those programs as compared to the same courses offered in lecture/lab settings remains a point of contention between supporters and detractors of non-traditional forms of education. This study used a foundation of research on dropout in higher education as the basis for an investigation of dropout rates in non-traditional forms of instruction in a community college setting. Course delivery formats studied included videotape-based courses, Internet-based courses, and courses offered in a self-paced laboratory environment. For each of these formats, the same course, offered in a lecture/lab …
An Efficient Algorithm To Determine The Periodic Steady-State Solutions Of Nonlinear Systems Using Extended Spectral Analysis, Gülay Tohumoğlu
An Efficient Algorithm To Determine The Periodic Steady-State Solutions Of Nonlinear Systems Using Extended Spectral Analysis, Gülay Tohumoğlu
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
A new method for the solution of nonlinear periodic systems was developed. It avoids the time domain calculations of the whole network equations. In the proposed method, by forming the augmented network as linear and nonlinear subnetworks these subnetworks are formulated in complex frequency and time domain respectively. Using spectral analysis the steady-state periodic solution of the whole nonlinear network is reached by an iterative approach. The method can be applied efficiently to weak and strong nonlinear circuits equally well. When we divide the network into a large linear subnetwork and a small nonlinear subnetwork, this method can be applied …

Development Of A Reusable Object Oriented Application Framework For Library Systems Domain, Roy Teck Choye Chew
Student Works (2000-2009)
The main goal of developing an application framework on an application domain or a business domain is to facilitate development of application systems within the same domain by reusing components through customisation and not from scratch. These components would have to be analysed and designed with reusable features so that they can be reused to develop different applications in the related domain. In the case of an object-oriented application framework in the technical view, it is made up of a set of interrelated abstract (generic) and concrete classes that underlie the components of a domain model and form the domain …

Mobility entails the study of systems in which components change location, in a voluntary or involuntary manner, and move across a space that may be defined to be either logical or physical. Coordination is concerned with what happens when two or more components come in contact with each other. In this paper we put forth a working definition of coordinatoin, we construct argumetns that demonstrate that coordination is central to understanding mobility, we explore the intellectual richness of the notion of coordination, and we consider the practical implications of coordination-centered system design strategies. We develop these ideas in two steps. …

The provision of advanced computational services within networks is rapidly becoming both feasible and economical. We present a general approach to the problem of configuring application sessions that require intermediate processing by showing how the session configuration problem can be transformed to a conventional shortest path problem. We show, through a series of examples, that the method can be applied to a wide variety of different situations.
