United States Diplomacy In The Age Of The Internet, Allison S. Greene Jan 2003

United States Diplomacy In The Age Of The Internet, Allison S. Greene

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

The dynamics of international relations are constantly changing, and the origin of an extraordinary amount of that change can be traced to what has been coined the ‘Information Revolution.’ It is a revolution as profound and as significant as Gutenberg's invention of moveable metal type, and may result in social and political consequences of comparable magnitude. One of the most significant and far-reaching implications of this phenomenon is the emergence of the Internet. Since its inception, there have been many claims and assertions about existing and potential repercussions of the Internet within the diplomatic realm.

The purpose of this work …

A Framework To Utilise Urban Bus Data For Advanced Data Analysis, Markus Hofmann, Brendan Tierney, Margaret M. O'Mahony Jan 2003

A Framework To Utilise Urban Bus Data For Advanced Data Analysis, Markus Hofmann, Brendan Tierney, Margaret M. O'Mahony

Conference papers

Most urban bus operators collect detailed data on their respective transportation networks using electronic fare collection systems. However, contrary to the opinion of other service industries that this data is a valuable resource, many bus operators have tended not to fully utilise these resources. International experience suggests using innovative technologies and methodologies such as data warehousing, Online Analytical Processing (OLAP), and data mining, to derive the maximum benefit from this data. Still bus operators tend not to keep the full range of data in a form, which is easy to access or utilise, and therefore, are not able to apply …

Million City Traveling Salesman Problem Solution By Divide And Conquer Clustering With Adaptive Resonance Neural Networks, Samuel A. Mulder, Donald C. Wunsch Jan 2003

Million City Traveling Salesman Problem Solution By Divide And Conquer Clustering With Adaptive Resonance Neural Networks, Samuel A. Mulder, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) is a very hard optimization problem in the field of operations research. It has been shown to be NP-complete and is an often-used benchmark for new optimization techniques. One of the main challenges with this problem is that standard, non-AI heuristic approaches such as the Lin-Kernighan algorithm (LK) and the chained LK variant are currently very effective and in wide use for the common fully connected, Euclidean variant that is considered here. This paper presents an algorithm that uses adaptive resonance theory (ART) in combination with a variation of the Lin-Kernighan local optimization algorithm to …

Detecting And Representing Relevant Web Deltas In Whoweda, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Wee Keong Ng, Sourav S. Bhowmick Jan 2003

Detecting And Representing Relevant Web Deltas In Whoweda, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Wee Keong Ng, Sourav S. Bhowmick

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we present a mechanism for detecting and representing changes, given the old and new versions of a set of interlinked Web documents, retrieved in response to a user''s query. In particular, we show how to detect and represent Web deltas, i.e., changes in the Web documents that are relevant to a user''s query in the context of our Web warehousing system called WHOWEDA (Warehouse of Web Data). In WHOWEDA, Web information is materialized views stored in Web tables in the form of Web tuples. These Web tuples, represented as directed graphs, can be manipulated using a set …

An Intelligent Early Warning System For Software Quality Improvement And Project Management, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Gautam Kane, Monu Bambroo Jan 2003

An Intelligent Early Warning System For Software Quality Improvement And Project Management, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Gautam Kane, Monu Bambroo

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

One of the main reasons behind unfruitful software development projects is that it is often too late to correct the problems by the time they are detected. It clearly indicates the need for early warning about the potential risks. In this paper, we discuss an intelligent software early warning system based on fuzzy logic using an integrated set of software metrics. It helps to assess risks associated with being behind schedule, over budget, and poor quality in software development and maintenance from multiple perspectives. It handles incomplete, inaccurate, and imprecise information, and resolve conflicts in an uncertain environment in its …

Instance Based Attribute Identification In Database Integration, Ee Peng Lim, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang Jan 2003

Instance Based Attribute Identification In Database Integration, Ee Peng Lim, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most research on attribute identification in database integration has focused on integrating attributes using schema and summary information derived from the attribute values. No research has attempted to fully explore the use of attribute values to perform attribute identification. We propose an attribute identification method that employs schema and summary instance information as well as properties of attributes derived from their instances. Unlike other attribute identification methods that match only single attributes, our method matches attribute groups for integration. Because our attribute identification method fully explores data instances, it can identify corresponding attributes to be integrated even when schema information …

Sensor Networks: An Overview, Malik Tubaishat, Sanjay Kumar Madria Jan 2003

Sensor Networks: An Overview, Malik Tubaishat, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Advances in hardware and wireless network technologies have created low-cost, low-power, multifunctional miniature sensor devices. These devices make up hundreds or thousands of ad hoc tiny sensor nodes spread across a geographical area. These sensor nodes collaborate among themselves to establish a sensing network. A sensor network can provide access to information anytime, anywhere by collecting, processing, analyzing and disseminating data. Thus, the network actively participates in creating a smart environment.

Two Distributed Algorithms For E-Ticket Validation Protocols For Mobile Clients, H. Mohanty, Sanjay Kumar Madria, T. Suman Kumar Reddy, R. K. Ghosh Jan 2003

Two Distributed Algorithms For E-Ticket Validation Protocols For Mobile Clients, H. Mohanty, Sanjay Kumar Madria, T. Suman Kumar Reddy, R. K. Ghosh

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The e-ticket (electronic ticket) validation problem has relevance in mobile computing environment because of the multiple submission of a ticket that is possible due to intermittent disconnections and mobility of hosts. Here, we propose protocols that are not only sensitive to disconnection but also to location. One of the proposed protocols is the variant of the distributed protocol proposed by Pedone (2000) for Internet users. This shows that a distributed protocol for static network can be restructured for distributed computation in a mobile computing environment. We have also proposed another protocol that uses a hierarchical location database of mobile hosts …

Neuro Emission Controller For Minimizing Cyclic Dispersion In Spark Ignition Engines, Pingan He, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2003

Neuro Emission Controller For Minimizing Cyclic Dispersion In Spark Ignition Engines, Pingan He, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel neural network (NN) controller is developed to control spark ignition (SI) engines at extreme lean conditions. The purpose of neurocontroller is to reduce the cyclic dispersion at lean operation even when the engine dynamics are unknown. The stability analysis of the closed-loop control system is given and the boundedness of all signals is ensured. Results demonstrate that the cyclic dispersion is reduced significantly using the proposed controller. The neuro controller can also be extended to minimize engine emissions with high EGR levels, where similar complex cyclic dynamics are observed. Further, the proposed approach can be applied to control …

Rate-Based End-To-End Congestion Control Of Multimedia Traffic In Packet Switched Networks, Mingsheng Peng, S. R. Subramanya, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2003

Rate-Based End-To-End Congestion Control Of Multimedia Traffic In Packet Switched Networks, Mingsheng Peng, S. R. Subramanya, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes an explicit rate-based end-to-end congestion control mechanism to alleviate congestion of multimedia traffic in packet switched networks such as the Internet. The congestion is controlled by adjusting the transmission rates of the sources in response to the feedback information from destination such as the buffer occupancy, packet arrival rate and service rate at the outgoing link, so that a desired quality of service (QoS) can be met. The QoS is defined in terms of packet loss ratio, transmission delay, power, and network utilization. Comparison studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme over New-Reno TCP (a variant …

A Deception Based Framework For The Application Of Deceptive Countermeasures In 802.11b Wireless Networks, Suen Yek Jan 2003

A Deception Based Framework For The Application Of Deceptive Countermeasures In 802.11b Wireless Networks, Suen Yek

Theses : Honours

The advance of 802.11 b wireless networking has been beset by inherent and in-built security problems. Network security tools that are freely available may intercept network transmissions readily and stealthily, making organisations highly vulnerable to attack. Therefore, it is incumbent upon defending organisations to take initiative and implement proactive defences against common network attacks. Deception is an essential element of effective security that has been widely used in networks to understand attack methods and intrusions. However, little thought has been given to the type and the effectiveness of the deception. Deceptions deployed in nature, the military and in cyberspace were …

Computer Assisted Eye Fungal Infection Diagnosis, Madhusudhanan Balasubramanian Jan 2003

Computer Assisted Eye Fungal Infection Diagnosis, Madhusudhanan Balasubramanian

LSU Master's Theses

In this thesis, an attempt has been made to assist the diagnosis of Fungal Keratitis, a fungal infection that occurs in the corneal layers of the eye, by identifying the region of infection in the corneal images using fractal-based features. Three features related to the fractal dimension of the surface of the image, when represented in a 3D using the pixel intensity measure, are used to identify these regions in the image. To reduce the computation complexity, Fisher linear discriminant (FLD) is used to reduce the 3D raw feature to 1D feature, while preserving feature values. Using the adaptive mixtures …

Control Of Transport Dynamics In Overlay Networks, Qishi Wu Jan 2003

Control Of Transport Dynamics In Overlay Networks, Qishi Wu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Transport control is an important factor in the performance of Internet protocols, particularly in the next generation network applications involving computational steering, interactive visualization, instrument control, and transfer of large data sets. The widely deployed Transport Control Protocol is inadequate for these tasks due to its performance drawbacks. The purpose of this dissertation is to conduct a rigorous analytical study on the design and performance of transport protocols, and systematically develop a new class of protocols to overcome the limitations of current methods. Various sources of randomness exist in network performance measurements due to the stochastic nature of network traffic. …

Scalable Parallel Molecular Dynamics Algorithms For Organic Systems, Satyavani Vemparala Jan 2003

Scalable Parallel Molecular Dynamics Algorithms For Organic Systems, Satyavani Vemparala

LSU Master's Theses

A scalable parallel algorithm, Macro-Molecular Dynamics (MMD), has been developed for large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of organic macromolecules, based on space-time multi-resolution techniques and dynamic management of distributed lists. The algorithm also includes the calculation of long range forces using Fast Multipole Method (FMM). FMM is based on the octree data structure, in which each parent cell is divided into 8 child cells and this division continues until the cell size is equal to the non-bonded interaction cutoff length. Due to constant number of operations performed at each stage of the octree, the FMM algorithm scales as O(N). Design and …

Ordering Genetic Algorithm Genomes With Reconstructability Analysis, Stephen Shervais, Martin Zwick Jan 2003

Ordering Genetic Algorithm Genomes With Reconstructability Analysis, Stephen Shervais, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

The building block hypothesis implies that genetic algorithm effectiveness is influenced by the relative location of epistatic genes on the chromosome. We find that this influence exists, but depends on the generation in which it is measured. Early in the search process it may be more effective to have epistatic genes widely separated. Late in the search process, effectiveness is improved when they are close together. The early search effect is weak but still statistically significant; the late search effect is much stronger and plainly visible. We demonstrate both effects with a set of simple problems, and show that infonnation-theoretic …

Developing A Catalogue Of Errors And Evaluating Its Impact On Software Development, Indrit Troshani Jan 2003

Developing A Catalogue Of Errors And Evaluating Its Impact On Software Development, Indrit Troshani

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The development of quality software is of paramount importance, yet this has been and continues to be an elusive goal for software engineers. Delivered software often fails due to errors that are injected during its development. Correcting these errors early in the development or preventing them altogether can, therefore, be considered as one way to improve software quality. In this thesis, the development of a Catalogue of Errors is described. Field studies with senior software engineering students are used to confirm that developers using the Catalogue of Errors commit fewer errors in their development artifacts. The impact of the Catalogue …

A Fast Connection-Time Redirection Mechanism For Internet Application Scalability, Michael Haungs, Raju Pandey, Earl Barr, J. Fritz Barnes Dec 2002

A Fast Connection-Time Redirection Mechanism For Internet Application Scalability, Michael Haungs, Raju Pandey, Earl Barr, J. Fritz Barnes

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Applications that are distributed, fault tolerant, or perform dynamic load balancing rely on redirection techniques, such as network address translation (NAT), DNS request routing, or middleware to handle Internet scale loads. In this paper, we describe a new connection redirection mechanism that allows applications to change end-points of communication channels. The mechanism supports redirections across LANs and WANs and is application-independent. Further, it does not introduce any central bottlenecks. We have implemented the redirection mechanism using a novel end-point control session layer. The performance results show that the overhead of the mechanism is minimal. Further, Internet applications built using this …

Level Oriented Formal Model For Asynchronous Circuit Verification And Its Efficient Analysis Method, Eric G. Mercer, Tomoya Kitai, Chris Myers, Yusuke Oguro, Tomohiro Yoneda Dec 2002

Level Oriented Formal Model For Asynchronous Circuit Verification And Its Efficient Analysis Method, Eric G. Mercer, Tomoya Kitai, Chris Myers, Yusuke Oguro, Tomohiro Yoneda

Faculty Publications

Using a level-oriented model for verification of asynchronous circuits helps users to easily construct formal models with high readability or to naturally model datapath circuits. On the other hand, in order to use such a model on large circuits, techniques to avoid the state explosion problem must be developed. This paper first introduces a level-oriented formal model based on time Petri nets, and then proposes its partial order reduction algorithm that prunes unnecessary state generation while guaranteeing the correctness of the verification.

The World Wide Web has had a huge influence on the computing field in general as well as simulation in particular (e.g., Web-Based Simulation). A new wave of development based upon XML has started. Two of the most interesting aspects of this development are the Semantic Web and Web Services. This paper examines the synergy between Web service technology and simulation. In one direction, Web service processes can be simulated for the purpose of correcting/improving the design. In the other direction, simulation models/components can be built out of Web services. Work on seamlessly using simulation as a part of Web …

Implications Of Mbti In Software Engineering Education, Luiz Fernando Capretz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

A number of approaches exist to aid the understanding of individual differences and their effects on teaching and learning. Educators have been using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to understand differences in learning styles and to develop teaching methods that cater for the various personality styles. Inspired by the MBTI, we developed a range of practices for effective teaching and learning in a software engineering course. Our aim is to reach every student, but in different ways, by devising various teaching approaches.

On Computing Condensed Frequent Pattern Bases, Jian Pei, Guozhu Dong, Wei Zou, Jiawei Han Dec 2002

On Computing Condensed Frequent Pattern Bases, Jian Pei, Guozhu Dong, Wei Zou, Jiawei Han

Kno.e.sis Publications

Frequent pattern mining has been studied extensively. However, the effectiveness and efficiency of this mining is often limited, since the number of frequent patterns generated is often too large. In many applications it is sufficient to generate and examine only frequent patterns with support frequency in close-enough approximation instead of in full precision. Such a compact but close-enough frequent pattern base is called a condensed frequent patterns-base.

In this paper, we propose and examine several alternatives at the design, representation, and implementation of such condensed frequent pattern-bases. A few algorithms for computing such pattern-bases are proposed. Their effectiveness at pattern …

Coordinated Target Assignment And Intercept For Unmanned Air Vehicles, Erik P. Anderson, Randal W. Beard, Michael A. Goodrich, Timothy W. Mclain

Faculty Publications

This paper presents an end-to-end solution to the cooperative control problem represented by the scenario where unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) are assigned to transition through known target locations in the presence of dynamic threats. The problem is decomposed into the subproblems of: 1) cooperative target assignment; 2) coordinated UAV intercept; 3) path planning; 4) feasible trajectory generation; and 5) asymptotic trajectory following. The design technique is based on a hierarchical approach to coordinated control. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

A Neural Network Method For Protein Classification, Arie D. Jones Dec 2002

A Neural Network Method For Protein Classification, Arie D. Jones

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The investigation detailed in this paper attempts to utilize a Leaming Vector Quantization network in order to classify a set of mitochondrial proteins based upon their amino acid sequence. The Learning Vector Quantization network uses a nearest neighbor approach to classification. Input vectors are fed into the network, which produces output vectors. Those output vectors are then matched by means of a distance bias to a corresponding classification vector. The learning and test sets consisted of thirteen similar mitochodrial proteins from seventy-two different species. This provided a pool of over nine hundred proteins to use. Half of the species were …

Load Balancing And Congestion Avoidance Routing, Konstantinos N. Kokkinos Dec 2002

Load Balancing And Congestion Avoidance Routing, Konstantinos N. Kokkinos

Dissertations

Today’s high speed backbone networks are expected to support a wide range of communication-intensive applications. One of the most important issues in Quality of Service (QoS) is efficient routing. Many QoS routing solutions have been published lately for different criteria of QoS requirements and resource constraints. In this dissertation we focus on the design of regular network topologies and suggest efficient routing schemes to reduce the probability of hot spot creation in the network. Furthermore, we provide a detection of congestion mechanism that reroutes traffic to maintain balancing with small communication cost. Several theoretical results relatively to network traffic balancing …

Flat-State Connectivity Of Linkages Under Dihedral Motions, Greg Aloupis, Erik D. Demaine, Vida Dujmović, Jeff Erickson, Stefan Langerman, Henk Meijer, Joseph O'Rourke, Mark Overmars, Michael Soss, Ileana Streinu, Godfried T. Toussaint

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We explore which classes of linkages have the property that each pair of their flat states - that is, their embeddings in ℝ2 without self-intersection - can be connected by a continuous dihedral motion that avoids self-intersection throughout. Dihedral motions preserve all angles between pairs of incident edges, which is most natural for protein models. Our positive results include proofs that open chains with nonacute angles are flat-state connected, as are closed orthogonal unit-length chains. Among our negative results is an example of an orthogonal graph linkage that is flat-state disconnected. Several additional results are obtained for other restrictedclasses of …
