Goal-Converging Behavior Networks And Self-Solving Planning Domains, Bernhard Nebel, Yuliya Lierler
Goal-Converging Behavior Networks And Self-Solving Planning Domains, Bernhard Nebel, Yuliya Lierler
Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Agents operating in the real world have to deal with a constantly changing and only partially predictable environment and are nevertheless expected to choose reasonable actions quickly. One way to address this problem is to use behavior networks as proposed by Maes, which support real-time decision making. Robotic soccer appears to be one domain where behavior networks have been proven to be particularly successful. In this paper, we analyze the reason for the success by identifying conditions that make behavior networks goal converging, i.e., allow them to reach the goals regardless of which particular action selection scheme is used. In …
Computing Answer Sets Of A Logic Program Via-Enumeration Of Sat Certificates, Yuliya Lierler, Marco Maratea
Computing Answer Sets Of A Logic Program Via-Enumeration Of Sat Certificates, Yuliya Lierler, Marco Maratea
Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Answer set programming is a new programming paradigm proposed based on the answer set semantics of Prolog. It is well known that an answer set for a logic program is also a model of the program's completion. The converse is true when the logic program is "tight". Lin and Zhao showed that for non-tight programs the models of completion which do not correspond to answer sets can be eliminated by adding to the completion what they called "loop formulas". Nevertheless, their solver ASSAT 1 has some disadvantages: it can work only with basic rules, and it can compute only one …
Introducing The Global Diffusion Of The Internet Series, Peter Wolcott, Seymour E. Goodman
Introducing The Global Diffusion Of The Internet Series, Peter Wolcott, Seymour E. Goodman
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
Many genes can play a role in multiple biological processes or molecular functions. Identifying multifunctional genes at the genome-wide level and studying their properties can shed light upon the complexity of molecular events that underpin cellular functioning, thereby leading to a better understanding of the functional landscape of the cell. However, to date, genome-wide analysis of multifunctional genes (and the proteins they encode) has been limited. Here we introduce a computational approach that uses known functional annotations to extract genes playing a role in at least two distinct biological processes. We leverage functional genomics data sets for three organisms—H. sapiens, …

Design Of A Tem-Cell With Increased Usable Test Area, Kresimir Malaric, Juraj Bartolic
Design Of A Tem-Cell With Increased Usable Test Area, Kresimir Malaric, Juraj Bartolic
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Transversal electromagnetic mode cells (TEM-cells) are used for electromagnetic compatibility measurements (emission and immunity), and for biomedical applications. Over the years, higher and higher frequencies are being used, which demands smaller transmission structures in order to obtain the homogeneous field distribution due to resonance. Such resonance destroys the TEM field, introducing higher order modes. The goal was to design the TEM-cell for GSM frequencies that will have a larger area with a homogeneous field used for testing, while still obtaining the characteristic impedance. Commercial TEM-cells used for frequencies of 900 MHz have only 2 cm in height available for testing, …
Partitioning Regular Polygons Into Circular Pieces I: Convex Partitions, Mirela Damian, Joseph O'Rourke
Partitioning Regular Polygons Into Circular Pieces I: Convex Partitions, Mirela Damian, Joseph O'Rourke
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
We explore an instance of the question of partitioning a polygon into pieces, each of which is as “circular” as possible, in the sense of having an aspect ratio close to 1. The aspect ratio of a polygon is the ratio of the diameters of the smallest circumscribing circle to the largest inscribed disk. The problem is rich even for partitioning regular polygons into convex pieces, the focus of this paper. We show that the optimal (most circular) partition for an equilateral triangle has an infinite number of pieces, with the lower bound approachable to any accuracy desired by a …
Analyzing The Impact Of Changing Software Requirements: A Traceability-Based Methodology, James Steven O'Neal
Analyzing The Impact Of Changing Software Requirements: A Traceability-Based Methodology, James Steven O'Neal
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Software undergoes change at all stages of the software development process. Changing requirements represent risks to the success and completion of a project. It is critical for project management to determine the impact of requirement changes in order to control the change process. We present a requirements traceability based impact analysis methodology to predictively evaluate requirement changes for software development projects. Trace-based Impact Analysis Methodology (TIAM) is a methodology utilizing the trace information, along with attributes of the work products and traces, to define a requirement change impact metric for determining the severity of a requirement change. We define the …
Level Of Essentialness Of A Node In Flowcharts And Its Application To Program Testing, Osman Kandara
Level Of Essentialness Of A Node In Flowcharts And Its Application To Program Testing, Osman Kandara
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Program testing is important to develop bug free software. A common form of program testing involves selecting test cases which execute (cover) a given set W of statements in the program. In regression testing, W typically forms a small subset of the program. It is often possible to find an alternate small set W so that execution of W' implies execution of W. We develop concepts and algorithms for finding W' as small as possible with the condition that the statements in W' are "close" to those in W in terms of program structure. These concepts generalize the notion of …
Machine Learning Techniques For Efficient Query Processing In Kowledge Base Systems, Kevin Paul Grant
Machine Learning Techniques For Efficient Query Processing In Kowledge Base Systems, Kevin Paul Grant
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation we propose a new technique for efficient query processing in knowledge base systems. Query processing in knowledge base systems poses strong computational challenges because of the presence of combinatorial explosion. This arises because at any point during query processing there may be too many subqueries available for further exploration. Overcoming this difficulty requires effective mechanisms for choosing from among these subqueries good subqueries for further processing. Inspired by existing works on stochastic logic programs, compositional modeling and probabilistic heuristic estimates we create a new, nondeterministic method to accomplish the task of subquery selection for query processing. Specifically, …
Computer Assisted Screening Of Digital Mammogram Images, John Terry Sample
Computer Assisted Screening Of Digital Mammogram Images, John Terry Sample
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The use of computer systems to assist clinicians in digital mammography image screening has advantages over traditional methods. Computer algorithms can enhance the appearance of the images and highlight suspicious areas. Screening provides a more thorough examination of the images. Any computer system that does screening of digital mammograms contains components to address multiple tasks such as: image segmentation, mass lesion detection and classification, and microcalcification detection and classification. This dissertation provides both effective and efficient improvements to existing algorithms, which segment mammogram images and locate mass lesions. In addition, we provide a new algorithm to evaluate and report the …
Interpolation Techniques For Overset Grids, Paul S. Sherman, Nathan B. Edgar
Interpolation Techniques For Overset Grids, Paul S. Sherman, Nathan B. Edgar
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The use of finite difference schemes in computational aeroacoustics requires the use of structured grids incomputational space. Complex geometries in the physical space can be modeled using multiple overlapping grids that are transformed into computational space. In this work, finite difference schemes are used that necessitate the addition of psuedo- or ghost-points in the overlap region of the grids for closure of the difference stencil. The functional values at these ghost points must be approximated from the values at the original grid points. This paper investigates interpolation techniques for these overset grids. An n th order interpolation scheme using Lagrange …
Algorithmic Composition In Contrasting Music Styles, Tristan Mcauley, Philip Hingston
Algorithmic Composition In Contrasting Music Styles, Tristan Mcauley, Philip Hingston
Research outputs pre 2011
The aim of this research was to automate the composition of convincingly “real” music in specific musical genres. By “real” music we mean music which is not obviously “machine generated”, is recognizable as being of the selected genre, is perceived as aesthetically pleasing, and is usable in a commercial context. To achieve this goal, various computational techniques were used, including genetic algorithms and finite state automata. The process involves an original, top down approach and a bottom up approach based on previous studies. Student musicians have objectively assessed the resulting compositions.

Honeyd - A Os Fingerprinting Artifice, Craig Valli
Research outputs pre 2011
The research looks at the efficiency of the honeyd honeypot system to reliably deceive intruders. Honeypots are being used as frontline network intelligence and forensic analysis tools. A honeypots ability to reliably deceive intruders is a key factor in gathering reliable and forensically sound data. Honeyd's primary deceptive mechanism is the use of the NMAP fingerprint database to provide bogus OS fingerprints to would be intruders. Tests conducted by the author on honeyd's ability to provide bogus fingerprints sees 78% of 704 signatures invalidated under heavy probing. However, the tests left 152 viable signatures for producing hardened honeypot designs.

A Case Study In The Security Of Network-Enabled Devices, Simeon Xenitellis, Craig Valli
Research outputs pre 2011
It is becoming increasingly common for appliances and other electronic devices to be network-enabled for usability and automation purposes. There have been fears that malicious users can control such devices remotely. Since the installation base of such network-enabled household devices is still relatively small, we examine the types of vulnerabilities that another such applicance has, the network-enabled printer, which is commonly found in the education and business sector. In this paper we analyse the source of the vulnerabilities and present detailed threat scenarios. In addition, we examine four organisations in Australia and Europe. Based on the results of the case …
Ray Tracing And Global Illumination, Jason Rupard
Ray Tracing And Global Illumination, Jason Rupard
All Volumes (2001-2008)
In order to represent real-world images with a computer, a program has to relate three-dimensional images on a two-dimensional monitor screen. Several ways of doing this exist with varying degrees of realism. One of the most successful methods can be grouped in a "screen-to-world method" of viewing, which is also known as "ray-tracing."
This computer graphics technology simulates light rays within a 3D environment. Since light rays have predictable physical properties, the raytracing algorithm can attempt to calculate the exact coloring of each ray/object intersection at any given pixel. Advanced levels of ray tracing allow light rays to bounce from …

A Linux-Based Graphical User Interface For The Creation And Reading Of The Frame Format: Version 2.4, Muhammed Aoun
Theses : Honours
To gain further knowledge of how the universe began, a new international co-operated project wishes not only to "see" stars exploding, but also to "hear" the explosion. It is theorised that the ability to "listen" to an explosion is possible by detecting gravitational waves. Gravitational waves are omitted when a star explodes, travelling through the cosmos at an exceptional speed. It is estimated that a gravity wave takes only 40 milliseconds to pass through the earth. Thus the aim of this international collaboration is to detect a gravitational wave. To accurately detect such waves, there needs to be several global …

Measuring Software Size For Continuous Process Improvement, Claire O'Sullivan
Measuring Software Size For Continuous Process Improvement, Claire O'Sullivan
Theses
This thesis looks at how the size of a software product can be measured. It looks at current software sizing methods (LOC and FPA) and shows that they are not sufficient in today’s rapidly changing environment. The COSMIC-FFP method is introduced and an overview of how it works is given. The hypothesis to be tested in this thesis is whether COSMIC-FFP is an accurate, repeatable sizing method that when applied to any type of software project produces a size measure that can be used to predict the effort required to complete the project.
This thesis investigates the use of the …
Sip Message Compression Technique For Efficient Multimedia Services In 3g Wireless Communications, Valerie Kenneally
Sip Message Compression Technique For Efficient Multimedia Services In 3g Wireless Communications, Valerie Kenneally
Theses
The direction of the global cellular industry is primarily determined by two standardisation bodies, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) (in Europe and Asia) and 3GPP2 (in North America). Both of these standardisation bodies are currently specifying a core network to deliver IP based multimedia services over 3G wireless networks. One of the fundamental building blocks of this IP based multimedia core network is the use of SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) as the control protocol. The radio resource, that is the available frequency spectrum, in wireless communication systems remains a limiting factor in terms of the bandwidth available to an …
On The Development Of The Intersection Of A Plane With A Polytope, Joseph O'Rourke
On The Development Of The Intersection Of A Plane With A Polytope, Joseph O'Rourke
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Define a “slice” curve as the intersection of a plane with the surface of a polytope, i.e., a convex polyhedron in three dimensions. We prove that a slice curve develops on a plane without self-intersection. The key tool used is a generalization of Cauchy's arm lemma to permit nonconvex “openings” of a planar convex chain.

The Zigzag Path Of A Pseudo-Triangulation, Oswin Aichholzer, Günter Rote, Bettina Speckmann, Ileana Streinu
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
We define the zigzag path of a pseudo-triangulation, a concept generalizing the path of a triangulation of a point set. The pseudotriangulation zigzag path allows us to use divide-and-conquer type of approaches for suitable (i.e., decomposable) problems on pseudo-triangulations. For this we provide an algorithm that enumerates all pseudotriangulation zigzag paths (of all pseudo-triangulations of a given point set with respect to a given line) in O(n2) time per path and O(n2) space, where n is the number of points. We illustrate applications of our scheme which include a novel algorithm to count the number of pseudotriangulations of a point …

A Memory-Based Approach To Cantonese Tone Recognition, Deryle W. Lonsdale, Michael Emonts
Faculty Publications
This paper introduces memory-based learning as a viable approach for Cantonese tone recognition. The memorybased learning algorithm employed here outperforms other documented current approaches for this problem, which is based on neural networks. Various numbers of tones and features are modeled to find the best method for feature selection and extraction. To further optimize this approach, experiments are performed to isolate the best feature weighting method, the best class voting weights method, and the best number of k-values to implement. Results and possible future work are discussed.
The Subclassing Anomaly In Compiler Evolution, Atanas Radenski
The Subclassing Anomaly In Compiler Evolution, Atanas Radenski
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Subclassing in collections of related classes may require re-implementation of otherwise valid classes just because they utilize outdated parent classes, a phenomenon that is referred to as the subclassing anomaly. The subclassing anomaly is a serious problem since it can void the benefits of code reuse altogether. This paper offers an analysis of the subclassing anomaly in an evolving object-oriented compiler. The paper also outlines a solution for the subclassing anomaly that is based on alternative code reuse mechanism, named class overriding.
