A Uk And Australian Study Of Hard Disk Disposal, Craig Valli, Andrew Jones
Research outputs pre 2011
Recent studies in Australia and the United Kingdom indicate that a broad cross-section of organisations are failing to adequately protect or erase confidential data stored on hard disk drives before subsequent disposal. Over 90% of hard disks that were examined as a result of the two Independent studies were in an easily recoverable state with some drives simply requiring a boot. This paper will give an overview and comparison of the two studies conducted. Then an examination of possible factors responsible for the inadequate erasure of hard disk devices will be undertaken. Furthermore, possible future research directions will also be …

Finally. the paper uncovers some of the underlying reasons for the underestimation of the threats to medical data by the medical profession.
Physician Secure Thyself, Patricia Williams
Physician Secure Thyself, Patricia Williams
Research outputs pre 2011
Whilst discussion rages on the issues relating to security of medical data and the reason why it is important, there is little published information on how to tackle even basic security challenges for medical practice in Australia. Research suggests an underestimation of the threats to medical data by medical practitioners, hence there is sufficient reason to promote development of tools to assist medical practice with technical issues they are unfamiliar with. This paper provides an initial dialogue on how these security issues should be addressed. Included is a framework for risk assessment and elaboration of the implementation process to make …
Recommendations For Wireless Network Security Policy: An Analysis And Classification Of Current And Emerging Threats And Solutions For Different Organisations, Andrew Woodward
Research outputs pre 2011
Since their inception, 802.11 wireless networks have been plagued by a wide range of security problems. These problems relate to both data security and denial of service attacks, and there have been many solutions created by different vendors address these problems. However, the number of different types of attack, and the many possible solutions, makes it a difficult task to put in place an appropriate wireless network security policy. Such a policy must address both the size and nature of the enterprise, and the resources available to it. Measures such as WEP and MAC filtering are only appropriate for home …

Analysis Of Hostile Network Reconnaissance To Anticipate And Mitigate Network Attacks, Luis Angel Rivera
Theses and Dissertations
Network security systems today such as current intrusion detection systems, intrusion prevention systems and firewalls are good at reacting to attacks as they occur or shortly after they occur. Current security systems lack the ability to identify and detect the activity that usually precedes an attack. This activity is known as network reconnaissance. In this thesis we have developed a technique that can assist current security systems to detect hostile network reconnaissance to anticipate and mitigate network attacks.

Preserving Trust Across Multiple Sessions In Open Systems, Fuk-Wing Thomas Chan
Theses and Dissertations
Trust negotiation, a new authentication paradigm, enables strangers on the Internet to establish trust through the gradual disclosure of digital credentials and access control policies. Previous research in trust negotiation does not address issues in preserving trust across multiple sessions. This thesis discusses issues in preserving trust between parties who were previously considered strangers. It also describes the design and implementation of trust preservation in TrustBuilder, a prototype trust negotiation system. Preserving trust information can reduce the frequency and cost of renegotiation. A scenario is presented that demonstrates that a server supporting trust preservation can recoup the cost of the …

However, as intrusion detection has evolved, scientists and administrators alike are beginning to question the need for this technology due to its lack of quantifiable performance and …
Responding To Policies At Runtime In Trustbuilder, Bryan J. Smith
Responding To Policies At Runtime In Trustbuilder, Bryan J. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Automated trust negotiation is the process of establishing trust between entities with no prior relationship through the iterative disclosure of digital credentials. One approach to negotiating trust is for the participants to exchange access control policies to inform each other of the requirements for establishing trust. When a policy is received at runtime, a compliance checker determines which credentials satisfy the policy so they can be disclosed. In situations where several sets of credentials satisfy a policy and some of the credentials are sensitive, a compliance checker that generates all the sets is necessary to insure that the negotiation succeeds …

Comparative Analysis Of Active And Passive Mapping Techniques In An Internet-Based Local Area Network, James B. Kuntzelman
Comparative Analysis Of Active And Passive Mapping Techniques In An Internet-Based Local Area Network, James B. Kuntzelman
Theses and Dissertations
Network mapping technologies allow quick and easy discovery of computer systems throughout a network. Active mapping methods, such as using nmap, capitalize on the standard stimulus-response of network systems to probe target systems. In doing so, they create extra traffic on the network, both for the initial probe and for the target system's response. Passive mapping methods work opportunistically, listening for network traffic as it transits the system. As such, passive methods generate minimal network traffic overhead. Active methods are still standard methods for network information gathering; passive techniques are not normally used due to the possibility of missing important …
