Lossless Medical Image Compression Using Integer Discrete Wavelet Transform With Adaptive Subband Differencing And Context-Adaptive Entropy Coding, Rasha F. Nadhim, Ibrahim Adel Ibrahim, Ashwaq T. Hashim
Lossless Medical Image Compression Using Integer Discrete Wavelet Transform With Adaptive Subband Differencing And Context-Adaptive Entropy Coding, Rasha F. Nadhim, Ibrahim Adel Ibrahim, Ashwaq T. Hashim
Journal of Intelligent Informatics, Networking, and Cybersecurity
From transform-domain decorrelation and adaptive entropy coding, we propose a method for efficient lossless compression of medical images in this work. We implement the Integer Discrete Wavelet Transform (IDWT) to decompose the input image into four subbands of LL, LH, HL, HH, encompassing approximation and directional detail elements, in the initial implementation. It also removes spatial redundancy in image information and decomposes image information into a less correlated and more sparsely distributed set of coefficients. To decrease redundancy further, it proposes a subband-dependent differencing scheme, which decorrelates neighbouring wavelet coefficients with directional prediction. So horizontal differencing is done on LH, …
Towards Audio-Driven Photorealistic Avatars For Teleconsultation: A Development And Evaluation Framework Under Constrained Bandwidth Environments, Fnu Himanshu
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Telehealth can improve access to healthcare services, especially for patients in rural and underserved areas. Many telehealth services use video communication to provide real-time interaction and a visible connection between patients and healthcare providers. However, video communication requires continuous transmission of audio and video data. When network conditions are limited or unreliable, audio and video interruptions can reduce communication quality. This thesis explores an audio-driven photorealistic avatar as a possible visual communication layer for teleconsultation without requiring continuous webcam video transmission. It develops two connected frameworks: the Audio-Driven Photorealistic Avatar Communication Framework and the Evaluation Framework. The Audio-Driven Photorealistic Avatar …

Context Matters: Auditing Gender Bias In T2i Generation Through Risk-Tiered Use-Case Profiles, Jose Luis Luna Campoverde, Yankun Wu, Xiaofei Xie, Noa Garcia
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Text-to-image (T2I) generative models are increasingly used to produce content for education, media, and public-facing communication, and are starting to be integrated into higher-impact pipelines. Since generated images tend to reinforce stereotypes, producing representational erasure via “default” depictions and shaping perceptions of who belongs in certain roles, a growing body of work has proposed metrics to quantify gender bias in T2I outputs. Yet existing evaluations remain fragmented. Metrics are often reported without a shared view of what they measure, what assumptions they entail, or how their results should be interpreted under different deployment contexts. This limits the usefulness of gender …
Finding A Way Out Of The Filter Bubble: The Confusion Of A Heavy Social Media User, Longwen Miao
Finding A Way Out Of The Filter Bubble: The Confusion Of A Heavy Social Media User, Longwen Miao
Masters Theses
This thesis studies how algorithmic recommendation systems reshape visual perception, aesthetic judgment, and the construction of selfhood within contemporary digital culture.
Everything begins with the experience of repeatedly encountering algorithmically recommended content on everyday digital platforms. On these platforms, images, sounds, and social interactions are continuously selected, repeated, and reorganized by predictive systems, forming an environment in which perception is constantly structured and adjusted.
From this observation, the research raises two central questions: how do algorithmic recommendation systems reshape visual perception, aesthetic judgment, and self-recognition, and how might these systems be intervened in or made perceptible through artistic practice? Within …
A Socio-Computational Framework For Understanding Information Campaigns Through A Collective Action Perspective, Sayantan Bhattacharya
A Socio-Computational Framework For Understanding Information Campaigns Through A Collective Action Perspective, Sayantan Bhattacharya
Theses and Dissertations
In a time when social media significantly influences public dialogue, grasping the elements that contribute to the success of information campaigns has become vital for understanding modern social movements and political engagement. This dissertation explores the essential factors that affect the efficacy of information campaigns across digital platforms, addressing a notable gap in existing research that frequently neglects the systematic connection between information spread and outcomes of collective action. Instead of viewing these as distinct phenomena, this study constructs an integrated framework that highlights three crucial dimensions of successful information campaigns: the human factor, which emphasizes the role of influential …
Revisiting Visualization Literacy: What Standardized Assessments Reveal And Conceal Across Instruments, Cultures, And Ai Systems, Saugat Pandey
Revisiting Visualization Literacy: What Standardized Assessments Reveal And Conceal Across Instruments, Cultures, And Ai Systems, Saugat Pandey
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Data visualizations are now a primary medium for public communication, scientific reasoning, and decision-making. By transforming complex data into accessible graphical forms, visualizations are widely assumed to make information comprehensible to broad audiences. Yet the ability to accurately read, interpret, and critically evaluate a visualization, what researchers call visualization literacy, is neither uniform nor universal. It is a learned, multidimensional skill shaped by prior exposure, educational opportunity, and context. While the field has developed standardized instruments to measure visualization literacy, these tools were built under narrow assumptions: participants are typically paid, English-speaking, and recruited from Western online panels. When any …

Reducing Complexity In Versatile Video Coding Intra-Coding Through Machine Learning-Based Optimization Of Partitioning And Prediction, Amina Kessentini, Amna Maraoui, Imen Werda, Fatma Ezahra Sayadi
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The escalating demand for high-resolution multimedia content has necessitated more efficient video compression solutions. The Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard, despite achieving remarkable compression gains, introduces significant computational complexity, primarily due to its exhaustive Rate-Distortion Optimization (RDO) process. To address this, we propose an intelligent approach leveraging supervised machine learning techniques to streamline the VVC encoding process. Specifically, we introduce a Lightweight Neural Network (LNN) for efficient coding unit partitioning decisions and a Decision Tree (DT) classifier for optimizing the intra prediction process. This dual-method framework, tailored for All Intra coding configuration, significantly reduces encoder complexity while maintaining compression performance …

Investigating Ui Based And Ai Based Interactions In Vr Environments For Human Anatomy Education, Siddharth Sondhi
Master's Projects
Traditional approaches to learning and simulation often struggle to convey the complexity of three dimensional structures. In anatomy education, methods such as textbooks, lectures, and cadaver based learning are used, but can make it difficult to understand the complex structure of organs within the human body. Virtual Reality (VR) offers a promising alternative by providing immersive and interactive 3D environments that allow users to explore and manipulate anatomical structures more intuitively. These environments can be further enhanced by integrating large language models (LLMs) as intelligent agents capable of guiding users through natural language interaction. This project presents a Unity-based VR …

Memebuddy: Dialog-Style Audio Representations For Engaging Non-Visual Meme Experiences, Chirag Bhansali, Vikas Ashok, Hae-Na Lee
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Image memes are a pervasive form of online communication, widely used to convey humor, opinions, and cultural references. Prior work has explored making memes accessible to blind users, primarily through auto-generated descriptive captions. While these approaches improve comprehensibility and sometimes incorporate prosodic or emotional cues, they often fail to capture the humor, narrative structure, and contextual nuances that make memes engaging. We present MemeBuddy, a system that models memes as dialog, generating structured, multi-turn audio representations using role-based speakers. MemeBuddy reinterprets a meme as a conversation between two speakers, integrating extracted meme text with contextual knowledge implicitly inferred by a …

Fcad: Feature-Coupled Anisotropic Diffusion For Continuous Graph Learning, Amitoz Azad, Zhiyuan Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this work, we propose a novel continuous graph neural network called FCAD (Feature-Coupled Anisotropic Diffusion) for the task of node classification on graphs. Our approach is motivated by the success of feature-coupled anisotropic diffusion PDEs in multivalued image restoration. Our method introduces a total variation regularization-inspired anisotropic term to control diffusion between nodes and incorporates a learnable parameterization for feature coupling during the diffusion process. Our model performs competitively against several GNN baselines for both heterophilous and homophilous graphs, demonstrating notable benefits for heterophilous graphs due to the learnable feature coupling.

Computer Science Student Research
As children progress through developmental stages, they undergo substantial biological, cognitive, and social changes, creating unique needs for online safety across different age groups (e.g., young children, tweens, teens). The existing parental control tools fail to account for these differences, leaving a notable gap in the literature on parental mediation. To this end, we conducted 10 focus group sessions with a total of 20 parents to understand their preferences for age-appropriate design components that promote self-regulation and open communication, followed by an ideation workshop with four UX design experts to translate these preferences into customized features. We then evaluated these …

“Synchronized Parenting Is Like Mixing Oil And Water”: Reimagining Parental Control For Co-Parenting In The Divorced Households, Prakriti Dumaru, Audrey Flood, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen
Computer Science Student Research
Children from divorced households are granted access to devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets), helping them to maintain meaningful contact with both parents. However, regulating their device usage across two households presents unique co-parenting challenges, which are little studied in the existing literature on parental mediation. As we begin to address this gap, we used low-fidelity prototype designs, guided by the principles of fostering open communication and instilling self-regulation. We evaluated those designs (presented in the form of storyboards) through semi-structured interviews with 23 divorced parents, whose children are active Internet users and aged 13 years or below. Based on our analysis, …

Cybermapping Solutions: A Unified Approach In Us/Nato Military Applications And Development, Nicholas Macrino
Electrical & Computer Engineering Projects for D. Eng. Degree
[First paragraph] Cyber threats are evolving in complexity and frequency, posing significant challenges for cybersecurity professionals in identifying, categorizing, and responding to attacks in real time. Unlike traditional warfare, where battlefield awareness is based on fixed geographic warfare, cyber operations involve abstract attack vectors, non-linear threat escalation, and rapidly changing network conditions. Modern cyber threats, such as advanced persistent threats (APTs), polymorphic malware, and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, require adaptive visualization techniques that provide real-time awareness and facilitate rapid decision-making. However, existing symbology standards, such as MIL-STD-2525D, were not designed to accommodate the dynamic nature of cyber warfare. The inability …

Ragg: Retrieval-Augmented Grasp Generation Model, Zhenhua Tang, Bin Zhu, Yanbin Hao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Richang Hong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Intent-based grasp generation inherently involves challenges such as manipulation ambiguity and modality gaps. To address these, we propose a novel Retrieval-Augmented Grasp Generation model (RAGG). Our key insight is that when humans manipulate new objects, they initially mimic the interaction patterns observed in similar objects, then progressively adjust hand-object contact. Consequently, we develop RAGG as a two-stage approach, encompassing retrieval-guided generation and structurally stable grasp refinement. In the first stage, we propose a Retrieval-Augmented Diffusion Model (ReDim), which identifies the most relevant interaction instance from a knowledge base to explicitly guide grasp generation, thereby mitigating ambiguity and bridging modality gaps …

This work presents a structured benchmarking study of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) applied to electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation tasks. We evaluate three representative architectures: MedGemma, HuatuoGPT-Vision, and LLaVA-Med, across progressive experimental stages involving text-only structured prompt normalization, text–image fusion with ECG plots, and full multimodal fusion incorporating time-series signals. A standardized five-section cardiology prompt was designed to enforce consistent output structure and SCP-code alignment, enabling reproducible metric computation across models. Quantitative evaluation using BERTScore, token-level F1, and diagnostic accuracy demonstrates that HuatuoGPT-Vision achieves the highest semantic and diagnostic alignment, while MedGemma exhibits superior formatting stability and reproducibility. In contrast, LLaVA-Med …

Energy-Aware Sensor Fusion Architecture For Autonomous Channel Robot Navigation In Constrained Environments, Mohamed Shili, Hicham Chaoui, Khaled Nouri
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Navigating autonomous robots in confined channels is inherently challenging due to limited space, dynamic obstacles, and energy constraints. Existing sensor fusion strategies often consume excessive power because all sensors remain active regardless of environmental conditions. This paper presents an energy-aware adaptive sensor fusion framework for channel robots that deploys RGB cameras, laser range finders, and IMU sensors according to environmental complexity. Sensor data are fused using an adaptive Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), which selectively integrates multi-sensor information to maintain high navigation accuracy while minimizing energy consumption. An energy management module dynamically adjusts sensor activation and computational load, enabling significant reductions …

Section Point Cloud Denoising Method Based On Enhanced Dbscan And Distance Consensus Evaluation, Chengpeng Ge, Dong Zhao, Rui Wang, Qinghua Ma
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: A denoising method based on the improved DBSCAN(density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise) algorithm is proposed to address the problem of removing noise points in point cloud data. The statistical filtering method is applied to pre-screen isolated outliers and remove largescale noise from the point cloud. The DBSCAN algorithm is optimized to reduce computational time complexity and achieve adaptive parameter adjustment, thereby dividing the point cloud into normal clusters, suspected clusters and abnormal clusters, and immediately removing abnormal clusters. Distance consensus assessment is applied, and suspect clusters are further evaluated. By calculating the distance between the suspected point …

Fusing Rotation Angle Coding In Spherical Space For Human Action Recognition, Benyue Su, Bangguo Zhu, Mengjuan Guo, Min Sheng
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: The existing human action recognition methods focus more on the translation information such as the coordinates and displacements of skeleton structure, and pay less attention to the motion trend of skeleton structure and the rotation information representing the motion direction of joints and bones. A spatio-temporal convolutional neural network method combining the rotation angle coding in spherical space is introduced. The angle information with scale invariance is obtained by mapping the human action in three-dimensional spherical space, and the dynamic angular velocity information is extracted as the angle code to represent the rotation information of joints and bones in …

Strangeness Detection From Crowded Video Scenes By Hand-Crafted And Deep Learning Features, Ali A. Hussan, Shaimaa H. Shaker, Akbas Ezaldeen Ali
Journal of Soft Computing and Computer Applications
Video anomaly detection is one of the trickiest issues in intelligent video surveillance because of the complexity of real data and the hazy definition of anomalies. Since abnormal occurrences typically seem different from normal events and move differently. The global optical flow was determined with the maximum accuracy and speed using the Farneback approach for calculating the magnitudes. Two approaches have been used in this study to detect strangeness in the video. These approaches are Deep Learning (DL) and manuality. The first method uses the activity map's development of entropy to detect the oddity in the video using a particular …
