Neural And Computational Approach To Understanding Environmental Modulation Of Behavioral Identity In Zebrafish, John W. Hageter Jan 2025

Neural And Computational Approach To Understanding Environmental Modulation Of Behavioral Identity In Zebrafish, John W. Hageter

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Organisms rely on behavior for survival. Animals engage in behaviors that allow for feeding, mating, exploring and navigating their environment among others. Necessary for these behaviors to develop are the environmental factors and underlying circuitry which make behavior possible. Specifically, how the environment guides underlying neural circuitry to develop unique facets or phenotypes of a larger behavior are key to understanding why unique behaviors exist. In this thesis, I build foundational evidence for determining these mechanisms through the use of the zebrafish local search behavior. This is a behavior that zebrafish employ following the loss of environmental illumination where they …

Automatic Scoring Cornhole Board System, Eric Diffendal, Jonah Harsh, Connor Lengel, Brett Sukie

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The objective is to create a self-scoring cornhole board that can detect and calculate each team's score based on the bags thrown each round and to be created at a low cost/eventually being sold at the current cost of a normal board. When playing cornhole, the game is simple: throw a bag on the board; however, the scores are variable (deduct and add) across each round. The most common issue when playing cornhole is miscalculations of the scores and forgetting the correct scores. Thus, this invention will make gameplay easy for all to play.

Parallel Multi Objective Shortest Path Update Algorithm In Large Dynamic Networks, S. M. Shovan, Arindam Khanda, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The multi objective shortest path (MOSP) problem, crucial in various practical domains, seeks paths that optimize multiple objectives. Due to its high computational complexity, numerous parallel heuristics have been developed for static networks. However, real-world networks are often dynamic where the network topology changes with time. Efficiently updating the shortest path in such networks is challenging, and existing algorithms for static graphs are inadequate for these dynamic conditions, necessitating novel approaches. Here, we first develop a parallel algorithm to efficiently update a single objective shortest path (SOSP) in fully dynamic networks, capable of accommodating both edge insertions and deletions. Building …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electric Vehicles (EVs) have become popular in the domain of Intelligent Transportation Systems for their ability to mitigate increasing environmental concerns by reducing carbon footprints and conserving fossil fuels. Due to the scarcity of static charging stations, Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) charge sharing can facilitate the on-demand charging requirement of EVs. However, most of the V2V charge-sharing solutions are either centralized or semi-centralized, causing long waiting times, huge message overhead, and high infrastructural costs. For a large network, assigning a suitable donor EV for an acceptor EV as well as maximizing the matching cardinality in a distributed environment is a challenging problem. …

Sosta: Skill-Oriented Stable Task Assignment With Bidirectional Preferences In Crowdsourcing, Riya Samanta, Soumya K. Ghosh, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Traditional task assignment approaches in crowdsourcing platforms have focused on optimizing utility for workers or tasks, often neglecting the general utility of the platform and the influence of mutual preference considering skill availability and budget restrictions. This oversight can destabilize task allocation outcomes, diminishing user experience, and, ultimately, the platform's long-term utility and gives rise to the Worker Task Stable Matching (WTSM) problem. To solve WTSM, we propose the Skill-oriented Stable Task Assignment with a Bi-directional Preference (SoSTA) method based on deferred acceptance strategy. SoSTA aims to generate stable allocations between tasks and workers considering mutually their preferences, optimizing overall …

Iterative Recommendations Based On Monte Carlo Sampling And Trust Estimation In Multi-Stage Vehicular Traffic Routing Games, Doris E.M. Brown, Venkata Sriram Siddhardh Nadendla, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The shortest-time route recommendations offered by modern navigation systems fuel selfish routing in urban vehicular traffic networks and are therefore one of the main reasons for the growth of congestion. In contrast, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) prefer to steer driver-vehicle systems (DVS) toward system-optimal route recommendations, which are primarily designed to mitigate network congestion. However, due to misalignment in motives, drivers may exhibit a lack of trust in the ITS. This paper models the interaction between a DVS and an ITS as a novel, multi-stage routing game where the DVS exhibits dynamics in its trust towards the recommendations of the …

Circa: A Framework For Collaborative Identification Of Root Cause Analysis In Iot Microservices, Xingguo Jiang, Hong Luo, Yan Sun, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

With continuous growth of IoT applications, service failures are quite inevitable. Due to the complexity and dynamics of IoT services, the root cause analysis (RCA) following an alert can assist in quickly resolving the possible faults. However, the time scales of metrics (e.g., CPU utilization, memory usage) generated by microservices and the dynamic topologies generated by calls between the Application Program Interfaces (APIs) are different. Moreover, the status of devices is an important aspect of RCA in IoT. All these make it extremely challenging to learn failure features of microservice metrics and API calls. Therefore, we propose a novel framework …

Last Digit Tendency: Lucky Number And Psychological Rounding In Mobile Transactions, Hai Wang, Tian Lu, Yingjie Zhang, Yue Wu, Yiheng Sun, Jingran Dong, Wen Huang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The distribution of digits in numbers obtained from different sources reveals interesting patterns. The well-known Benford’s law states that the first digits in many real-life numerical data sets have an asymmetric, logarithmic distribution in which small digits are more common; this asymmetry diminishes for subsequent digits, and the last digit tends to be uniformly distributed. In this paper, we investigate the digit distribution of numbers in a large mobile transaction data set with 835 million mobile transactions and payments made by approximately 460,000 users in more than 300 cities. Although the first digits of the numbers in these mobile transactions …

Your Cursor Reveals: On Analyzing Workers’ Browsing Behavior And Annotation Quality In Crowdsourcing Tasks, Pei-Chi Lo, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this work, we investigate the connection between browsing behavior and task quality of crowdsourcing workers performing annotation tasks that require information judgements. Such information judgements are often required to derive ground truth answers to information retrieval queries. We explore the use of workers’ browsing behavior to directly determine their annotation result quality. We hypothesize user attention to be the main factor contributing to a worker’s annotation quality. To predict annotation quality at the task level, we model two aspects of task-specific user attention, also known as general and semantic user attentions . Both aspects of user attention can be …

Automated Program Refinement: Guide And Verify Code Large Language Model With Refinement Calculus, Yufan Cai, Zhe Hou, David Sanan, Xiaokun Luan, Yun Lin, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recently, the rise of code-centric large language models (LLMs) appears to have reshaped the software engineering world with low-barrier tools like Copilot that can generate code easily. However, there is no correctness guarantee for the code generated by LLMs, which suffer from the hallucination problem, and their output is fraught with risks. Besides, the end-to-end process from specification to code through LLMs is a non-transparent and uncontrolled black box. This opacity makes it difficult for users to understand and trust the generated code. Addressing these challenges is both necessary and critical. In contrast, program refinement transforms high-level specification statements into …
