Object-Oriented Database Access From Ada, Li Chou
Object-Oriented Database Access From Ada, Li Chou
Theses and Dissertations
Ada embodies many modern software engineering principles, namely, modifiability, efficiency, reliability, and understandability. Its powerful data abstraction allows programmers to easily model objects in the real world. A database management system (DBMS) provides long term storage. It provides a convenient and efficient environment to manipulate data. Currently, with Ada access to a DBMS is typically done through the use of a language extension and a preprocessor to convert the extensions to library calls appropriate for the DBMS. However, these systems are limited on more complex applications, such as computer-aided engineering design. Object-oriented design (OOD) is a new way of thinking …

An analysis of three formats, AFIT GEOM, the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) DRP, and Software Systems' Flight, is presented. Each file …
Development Of A Visual System Interface To Support A Domain-Oriented Application Composition System, Timothy L. Weide
Development Of A Visual System Interface To Support A Domain-Oriented Application Composition System, Timothy L. Weide
Theses and Dissertations
This research designed and prototyped a visual system interface to generate, display, and modify domain-oriented application specifications. A visual system interface, called the Architect Visual System Interface (AVSI), supplements a text-based environment, called Architect, previously developed by two other students. Using canonical formal specifications of domain objects, Architect rapidly composes these specifications into a software application and executes a prototype of that application as a means to demonstrate its correctness before any programming language specific code is generated. This thesis investigates visual techniques for populating, manipulating, viewing, and composing these software application specifications within the formal object base scheme required …

Kendall Square Research introduced the KSRl system in 1991. The architecture is based on a ring of rings of 64bit microprocessors. It is a distributed, shared memory system and is scalable. The memory structure is unique and is the key to understanding the system. Different levels of caching eliminates physical memory addressing and leads to the ALLCACHE TM scheme. Since requested data may be found in any of several caches, the initial access time is variable. Once pulled into the local (sub)cache, subsequent access times are fixed and minimal. Thus, the KSRl is a Cache-Only Memory Architecture (COMA) system. This …

Theses
This paper presents GenSIF, a Generic Systems Integration Framework. GenSIF features a pre-planned development process on a domain-wide basis and facilitates system integration and project coordination for very large, complex and distributed systems. Domain analysis, integration architecture design and infrastructure design are identified as the three main components of GenSIF. In the next step we map Beilcore's OSCA interoperability architecture, ANSA, IBM's SAA and Bull's DCM into GenSIF. Using the GenSIF concepts we compare each of these architectures.
GenSIF serves as a general framework to evaluate and position specific architecture. The OSCA architecture is used to discuss the impact of …

Runtime Compilation Techniques For Data Partitioning And Communication Schedule Reuse, Ravi Ponnusamy, Joel Saltz, Alok Choudhary
Northeast Parallel Architecture Center
In this paper, we describe two new ideas by which HPF compiler can deal with irregular computations effectively. The first mechanism invokes a user specified mapping procedure via a set of compiler directives. The directives allow the user to use program arrays to describe graph connectivity, spatial location of army elements and computational load. The second is a simple conservative method that in many cases enables a compiler to recognize that it is possible to reuse previously computed results from inspectors (e.g. communication schedules, loop iteration partitions, information that associates off-processor data copies with on-processor buffer locations). We present performance …

Georg Cantor And The Battle For Transfinite Set Theory, Joseph Dauben
Georg Cantor And The Battle For Transfinite Set Theory, Joseph Dauben
ACMS Journal 2004
Georg Cantor is well known as the founder of transfinite set theory. Equally celebrated, however, are the obstacles he faced in trying to win acceptance for his seemingly unorthodox views, his acrimonious differences with Leopold Kronecker and his unfortunate but progressively debilitating nervous breakdowns that some authors have linked directly to his many problems with set theory. Above all, Cantor's justification of set theory was all the more urgent because of Kronecker's critical denunciation of Cantor's mathematics. In tracing the evolution of Cantorian set theory, it is necessary to examine the opposition it met, and evaluate the technical, philosophical, psychological, …

Integrated Computer Controlled Sensor Monitor, Tariq Hafeez Malik
Theses : Honours
This research has developed an Integrated Computer Controlled Sensor Monitor (ICCSM) environment, to monitor and analyse alarm events associated with sensors, including an interface between a PC and a number of detectors. Such an environment will help the security industry analyse the factors causing false alarms at particular locations. The ICCSM environment monitors, and records, alarm data. Knowing exactly which sensor has been activated, and its location, is of paramount importance to the effective deployment of response forces and making the identification of causes of spurious alarms easier. The lCCSM environment is a combination of software and general purpose hardware, …

A hypermedia database including selected flora and fauna in Kittitas County, Washington, was developed using HyperCard software for researching information about 400+ species. students had the opportunity to use the database in school libraries and in the author's fifth-grade classroom. The database cards accessed videodisc images where available. On the basis of limited study to date, it appears that when studying the environment, student learning was enhanced by the use of database material created by the author.
An Object Oriented Preemptive Multitasking Kernel, Lee Gene Shipman
An Object Oriented Preemptive Multitasking Kernel, Lee Gene Shipman
Masters Theses
“This paper describes a preemptive multitasking kernel designed and coded using C++ using an object oriented paradigm. The kernel design, while implemented on an Intel 80386 based IBM PC running MS-DOS 4.01, can be ported to any platform, rewriting only the low level, hardware specific code.
The kernel, in application framework form, enables the applications developer to create real-time multitasking applications. This can be done in a systematic way by capitalizing on the power of object oriented program development.
A simulation was created to verify the correctness of the kernel against a traditional non-multitasking approach. This simulation provides the proof …

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center
A methodology for developing future generations of a storm-scale weather prediction model for Massively Parallel Processing is described. The forecast model is the Advanced Regional Prediction System (ARPS), a three-dimensional, fully compressible, non-hydrostatic predictive model. In the short term, the computational goals include developing a portable, scalable model for distributed memory SIMD and MIMD architectures, while preserving a high degree of modularity to support rapid design and validation, maintainability, educational goals and operational testing. Longer term computational goals include a parallel adaptive mesh refinement scheme. A FortranD/High Performance Fortran version of the ARPS provides portability in the current version of …

The Multicomputer Toolbox - First-Generation Scalable Libraries, Anthony Skjellum, Alvin Leung, Steven G. Smith, Robert D. Falgout
Northeast Parallel Architecture Center
"First-generation" scalable parallel libraries have been achieved, and are maturing, within the Multicomputer Toolbox. The Toolbox includes sparse, dense, iterative linear algebra, a stiff ODE/DAE solver, and an open software technology for additional numerical algorithms, plus an inter-architecture Makefile mechanism for building applications. We have devised C-based strategies for useful classes of distributed data structures, including distributed matrices and vectors. The underlying Zipcodemessage passing system has enabled process-grid abstractions of multicomputers, communication contexts, and process groups, all characteristics needed for building scalable libraries, and scalable application software. We describe the data-distribution-independent approach to building scalable libraries, which is needed so …

A Study Of Dynamic Optimization Techniques: Lessons And Directions In Kernel Design, Calton Pu, Jonathan Walpole
A Study Of Dynamic Optimization Techniques: Lessons And Directions In Kernel Design, Calton Pu, Jonathan Walpole
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Synthesis kernel [21,22,23,27,28] showed that dynamic code generation, software feedback, and fine-grain modular kernel organization are useful implementation techniques for improving the performance of operating system kernels. In addition, and perhaps more importantly, we discovered that there are strong interactions between the techniques. Hence, a careful and systematic combination of the techniques can be very powerful even though each one by itself may have serious limitations. By identifying these interactions we illustrate the problems of applying each technique in isolation to existing kernels. We also highlight the important common under-pinnings of the Synthesis experience and present our ideas on …

Neural Network Diagnosis Of Malignant Melanoma From Color Images, Fikret ErçAl, C. Chawla, William V. Stoecker, Randy Hays Moss
Computer Science Technical Reports
Malignant melanoma is the deadliest form of all skin cancers. Approximately 32,000 new cases of malignant melanoma were diagnosed in 1991, with approximately 80 percent of patients expected to survive five years [1]. Fortunately, if detected early, even malignant melanoma may be treated successfully. Thus, in recent years, there has been a rising interest in the automated detection and diagnosis of skin cancer, particularly malignant melanoma [2]. In this paper, we present a novel neural network approach for the automated separation of melanoma from three other benign categories of tumors which exhibit melanoma-like characteristics. Our approach is based on devising …
