Teaching Ethical And Social Issues In Cs1 And Cs2, Kay G. Schulze, Frances Grodzinsky Mar 1997

Teaching Ethical And Social Issues In Cs1 And Cs2, Kay G. Schulze, Frances Grodzinsky

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

The discussion of whether ethical and social issues of computing should be explored in undergraduate computer science education has resulted in most academic institutions and educators agreeing that they are important topics that must be included. Further support has been provided by Curricula '91 [16], the CSAC/CSAB accreditation [2] and ImpactCS [12]. Many books [7, 8, 9, 10] and papers [6, 14] have discussed what topics should be covered and what techniques can be used either in a dedicated course or in modules across the curriculum. However, explicit detailed examples that have worked successfully, particularly in lower level computer science …

An Introduction To Algorithmic Information Theory: Its History And Some Examples, George Markowsky

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The goal of this paper is to provide a simple introduction to Algorithmic Information Theory (AIT) that will highlight some of the main ideas without presenting too many details. More technical treatments of these ideas can be found in References [1], [2], [3] and [4], which are listed at the end of the paper. The main ideas of Algorithmic Information Theory will be presented using English as the underlying programming language. The presentation illustrates the fact that the same arguments can be expressed in any other reasonable language and that the main results have a robust universality across all reasonable …

Cascade Artmap: Integrating Neural Computation And Symbolic Knowledge Processing, Ah-Hwee Tan Mar 1997

Cascade Artmap: Integrating Neural Computation And Symbolic Knowledge Processing, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper introduces a hybrid system termed cascade adaptive resonance theory mapping (ARTMAP) that incorporates symbolic knowledge into neural-network learning and recognition. Cascade ARTMAP, a generalization of fuzzy ARTMAP, represents intermediate attributes and rule cascades of rule-based knowledge explicitly and performs multistep inferencing. A rule insertion algorithm translates if-then symbolic rules into cascade ARTMAP architecture. Besides that initializing networks with prior knowledge can improve predictive accuracy and learning efficiency, the inserted symbolic knowledge can be refined and enhanced by the cascade ARTMAP learning algorithm. By preserving symbolic rule form during learning, the rules extracted from cascade ARTMAP can be compared …

Asml: Automatic Site Markup Language 1.03, Charles B. Owen, Fillia Makedon, Glen Frank, Michael Kenyon

Computer Science Technical Reports

Creation of large and complex World Wide Web sites is hampered by the "page at a time" approach of many tools and the programming knowledge and custom software development required for automated solutions. This report describes the development of the Automatic Site Markup Language (ASML). ASML is a new markup language designed to produce large, complicated web sites which can include dynamic content. ASML extends HTML with new, high-level features while still preserving complete compatibility with common browser and server technologies. It has powerful indexing and searching facilities, and enables the automatic translation of document formats. Most importantly, ASML provides …

An Efficient Scheme For A Distributed Video Retrieval System For Remote Users, Fillia Makedon, James Matthews, Charles Owen, Samuel Rebelsky

Computer Science Technical Reports

The new era of digital video and multimedia technologies has created the potential for large libraries of digital video. With this new technology come the challenges of creating usable means by which such large and diverse depositories of digital information (digital libraries) can be efficiently queried and accessed so that (a) the response is fast, (b) the communication over the Internet is minimal and (c) the retrieval is characterized by high precision and recall. In this paper we discuss how existing digital video editing tools, together with data compression techniques, can be combined to create a fast, accurate and cost …

Inductive Neural Logic Network And The Scm Algorithm, Ah-Hwee Tan, Loo-Nin Teow Feb 1997

Inductive Neural Logic Network And The Scm Algorithm, Ah-Hwee Tan, Loo-Nin Teow

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Neural Logic Network (NLN) is a class of neural network models that performs both pattern processing and logical inferencing. This article presents a procedure for NLN to learn multi-dimensional mapping of both binary and analog data. The procedure, known as the Supervised Clustering and Matching (SCM) algorithm, provides a means of inferring inductive knowledge from databases. In contrast to gradient descent error correction methods, pattern mapping is learned by an inductive NLN using fast and incremental clustering of input and output patterns. In addition, learning/encoding only takes place when both the input and output match criteria are satisfied in a …

Least Space-Time First Scheduling Algorithm : Scheduling Complex Tasks With Hard Deadline On Parallel Machines, Bo-Chao Cheng Jan 1997

Least Space-Time First Scheduling Algorithm : Scheduling Complex Tasks With Hard Deadline On Parallel Machines, Bo-Chao Cheng

Dissertations

Both time constraints and logical correctness are essential to real-time systems and failure to specify and observe a time constraint may result in disaster. Two orthogonal issues arise in the design and analysis of real-time systems: one is the specification of the system, and the semantic model describing the properties of real-time programs; the other is the scheduling and allocation of resources that may be shared by real-time program modules.

The problem of scheduling tasks with precedence and timing constraints onto a set of processors in a way that minimizes maximum tardiness is here considered. A new scheduling heuristic, Least …

Safe Code Transfromations For Speculative Execution In Real-Time Systems, Mohamed Mohamed Younis Jan 1997

Safe Code Transfromations For Speculative Execution In Real-Time Systems, Mohamed Mohamed Younis

Dissertations

Although compiler optimization techniques are standard and successful in non-real-time systems, if naively applied, they can destroy safety guarantees and deadlines in hard real-time systems. For this reason, real-time systems developers have tended to avoid automatic compiler optimization of their code. However, real-time applications in several areas have been growing substantially in size and complexity in recent years. This size and complexity makes it impossible for real-time programmers to write optimal code, and consequently indicates a need for compiler optimization. Recently researchers have developed or modified analyses and transformations to improve performance without degrading worst-case execution times. Moreover, these optimization …

Massively Parallel Reasoning In Transitive Relationship Hierarchies, Yugyung Lee Jan 1997

Massively Parallel Reasoning In Transitive Relationship Hierarchies, Yugyung Lee

Dissertations

This research focuses on building a parallel knowledge representation and reasoning system for the purpose of making progress in realizing human-like intelligence. To achieve human-like intelligence, it is necessary to model human reasoning processes by programs. Knowledge in the real world is huge in size, complex in structure, and is also constantly changing even in limited domains. Unfortunately, reasoning algorithms are very often intractable, which means that they are too slow for any practical applications. One technique to deal with this problem is to design special-purpose reasoners. Many past Al systems have worked rather nicely for limited problem sizes, but …

Application Of Geometric Hashing Techniques To Retrieval Of High Dimensional Objects In Scientific Databases, Joyce Ye Lu Jan 1997

Application Of Geometric Hashing Techniques To Retrieval Of High Dimensional Objects In Scientific Databases, Joyce Ye Lu

Theses

An approach to designing very fast algorithms for tackling the problem of approximate object matching in very large databases of high-dimensional objects is proposed. Given are a target object C and a database D containing information about a set of high-dimensional objects each of which is represented as a set of points. Our algorithms have an off-line object preprocessing (shape representation) phase and a recognition phase. The described algorithms determine those objects from D which are the closest to object C, according to delete or insert some points, move and rotation. All of these can be achieved very efficiently with …

An Error Handling Framework For The Orbwork Workflow Enactment Service Of Meteor, Davasish Worah, Amit P. Sheth, Krzysztof J. Kochut, John A. Miller

Kno.e.sis Publications

Workflow Management Systems (WFMSs) can be used to re-engineer, streamline, automate, and track organizational processes involving humans and automated information systems. However, the state-of-the-art in workflow technology suffers from a number of limitations that prevent it from being widely used in large-scale mission critical applications. Error handling is one such issue. What makes the task of error handling challenging is the need to deal with errors that appear in various components of a complex distributed application execution environment, including various WFMS components, workflow application tasks of different types, and the heterogeneous computing infrastructure.

In this paper, we discuss a top-down …

A One-Pass Algorithm For Accurately Estimating Quantiles For Disk-Resident Data, Khaled Alsabti, Sanjay Ranka, Vineet Singh

College of Engineering and Computer Science - Former Departments, Centers, Institutes and Projects

The '-quantile of an ordered sequence of data values is the element with rank ' \Theta n, where n is the total number of values. Accurate estimates of quantiles are required for the solution of many practical applications. In this paper, we present a new algorithm for estimating the quantile values for disk-resident data. Our algorithm has the following characteristics: (1) It requires only one pass over the data; (2) It is deterministic; (3) It produces good lower and upper bounds of the true values of the quantiles; (4) It requires no a priori knowledge of the distribution of the …

Resource Access Control For An Internet User Agent, Nataraj Nagaratnam, Steven B. Byrne Jan 1997

Resource Access Control For An Internet User Agent, Nataraj Nagaratnam, Steven B. Byrne

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

The rapid increase in the Internet's connectivity has lead to proportional increase in the development of Web-based applications. Usage of downloadable content has proved effective in a number of emerging applications including electronic commerce, software components on-demand, and collaborative systems. In all these cases, Internet user agents (like browsers, tuners) are widely used by the clients to utilize and execute such downloadable content. With this new technology of using downloadable content comes the problem of the downloaded content obtaining unauthorized access to the client's resources. In effect, granting a hostile remote principal the requested access to client's resources may lead …

Mathematics And Values: Can Philosophy Guide Projects?, Michael H. Veatch Jan 1997

Mathematics And Values: Can Philosophy Guide Projects?, Michael H. Veatch

ACMS Journal 2004

The philosophy of mathematics has provided insight on questions of foundations and mathematical truth; however, it has not been very fruitful in guiding the practice of mathematics. This paper attempts to find points of contact between a Christian worldview and the choice of mathematical projects and methods. Three areas are considered: (i) dubitability in current research, (ii) the intrinsic value of contemporary mathematics to contemporary society, and (iii) the affirmation of human value in the use of mathematics. Finally, a framework for valuing mathematics is proposed as an encouragement to think more deeply about how a Christian might choose a …

A Migratable User-Level Process Package For Pvm, Ravi Kunuru, Steve Otto, Jonathan Walpole Jan 1997

A Migratable User-Level Process Package For Pvm, Ravi Kunuru, Steve Otto, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Shared, multi-user, workstation networks are characterized by unpredictable variability in system load. Further, the concept of workstation ownership is typically present. For efficient and unobtrusive computing in such environments, applications must not only overlap their computation with communication but also redistribute their computations adaptively based on changes in workstation availability and load. Managing these issues at application level leads to programs that are difficult to write and debug. In this paper, we present a system that manages this dynamic multi-processor environment while exporting a simple message-based programming model of a dedicated, distributed memory multiprocessor to applications. Programmers are thus insulated …

Webflow - A Visual Programming Paradigm For Web/Java Based Coarse Grain Distributed Computing, Dimple Bhatia, Vanco Burzevski, Maja Camuseva, Geoffrey C. Fox

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

We present here the recent work at NPAC aimed at developing WebFlow---a general purpose Web based visual interactive programming environment for coarse grain distributed computing. We follow the 3-tier architecture with the central control and integration WebVM layer in tier-2, interacting with the visual graph editor applets in tier-1 (front-end) and the legacy systems in tier-3. WebVM is given by a mesh of Java Web servers such as Jeeves from JavaSoft or Jigsaw from MIT/W3C. All system control structures are implemented as URL-addressable servlets which enable Web browser-based authoring, monitoring, publication, documentation and software distribution tools for distributed computing. We …

SWITCH

The article explains telepresence, as well as its potential in safety and security, along with its traditional usage of traversing dangerous situations. This article describes a dystopian plan to place drones equipped with cameras and microphones in all homes in the Silicon Valley as a vehicle for telepresence. The data achieved through this method would also be stored into a public domain browser on the internet, free for anyone in the public to view, including larger corporations and the government. The idea behind this is the assimilation of data behind all cultures for understanding and to assist law enforcement in …

The Effects Of User Interface Metaphors On The Learnability Of Computer Systems By Field Dependent And Field Independent Computer Users, Robert N. Urwiler Jr.

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to assess the differences in the learning performance (speed and accuracy) with which field dependent and field independent subjects could complete a set of checkbook management tasks using software employing a user interface making strong use of common checkbook management metaphors versus software employing an interface adhering to a defacto industry standard-based graphical user interface design guideline. It was hypothesized that both field dependent and field independent users would complete tasks more quickly and accurately using both user interface types.

From a population of traditional and non-traditional college students, 64 individuals volunteered to participate in the …
