Relationship Analysis : Improving The Systems Analysis Process, Joseph Thomas Catanio May 2004

Relationship Analysis : Improving The Systems Analysis Process, Joseph Thomas Catanio

Dissertations

A significant aspect of systems analysis involves discovering and representing entities and their inter-relationships. Guidelines exist to identify entities but do not provide a rigorous and comprehensive process to explicitly capture the relationship structure of the problem domain. Whereas, other analysis techniques lightly address the relationship discovery process, Relationship Analysis is the only systematic, domain-independent analysis technique focusing exclusively on a domain's relationship structure.

The quality of design artifacts, such as class diagrams, and development time necessary to generate these artifacts can be improved by first representing the complete relationship structure of the problem domain. The Relationship Analysis Model is …

Efficient Similarity Search In High-Dimensional Data Spaces, Yue Li May 2004

Efficient Similarity Search In High-Dimensional Data Spaces, Yue Li

Dissertations

Similarity search in high-dimensional data spaces is a popular paradigm for many modern database applications, such as content based image retrieval, time series analysis in financial and marketing databases, and data mining. Objects are represented as high-dimensional points or vectors based on their important features. Object similarity is then measured by the distance between feature vectors and similarity search is implemented via range queries or k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) queries.

Implementing k-NN queries via a sequential scan of large tables of feature vectors is computationally expensive. Building multi-dimensional indexes on the feature vectors for k-NN search also tends to be unsatisfactory …

Studies Of Disk Arrays Tolerating Two Disk Failures And A Proposal For A Heterogeneous Disk Array, Chunqi Han May 2004

Studies Of Disk Arrays Tolerating Two Disk Failures And A Proposal For A Heterogeneous Disk Array, Chunqi Han

Dissertations

There has been an explosion in the amount of generated data in the past decade. Online access to these data is made possible by large disk arrays, especially in the RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) paradigm. According to the RAID level a disk array can tolerate one or more disk failures, so that the storage subsystem can continue operating with disk failure(s). RAID 5 is a single disk failure tolerant array which dedicates the capacity of one disk to parity information. The content on the failed disk can be reconstructed on demand and written onto a spare disk. However, …

An Approximate Search Engine For Structure, Huiyuan Shan May 2004

An Approximate Search Engine For Structure, Huiyuan Shan

Dissertations

As the size of structural databases grows, the need for efficiently searching these databases arises. Thanks to previous and ongoing research, searching by attribute-value and by text has become commonplace in these databases. However, searching by topological or physical structure, especially for large databases and especially for approximate matches, is still an art.

In this dissertation, efficient search techniques are presented for retrieving trees from a database that are similar to a given query tree. Rooted ordered labeled trees, rooted unordered labeled trees and free trees are considered. Ordered labeled trees are trees in which each node has a label …

Enriching And Designing Metaschemas For The Umls Semantic Network, Li Zhang May 2004

Enriching And Designing Metaschemas For The Umls Semantic Network, Li Zhang

Dissertations

The disparate terminologies used by various biomedical applications or professionals make the communication between them more difficult. The Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) is an attempt to integrate different medical terminologies into a unified representation framework to improve decision making and the quality of patient care as well as research in the health-care field. Metathesaurus (META) and Semantic Network (SN) are two main components of the UMLS system, where the SN provides a high-level abstract of the concepts in the META.

This dissertation addresses three problems of the SN. First, the SN's two-tree …

Review Of Algorithms For Rna Secondary Structure Prediction With Pseudoknots, Ingrid Helene Nielsen May 2004

Review Of Algorithms For Rna Secondary Structure Prediction With Pseudoknots, Ingrid Helene Nielsen

Theses

Pseudoknots are structures that are formed from the base pairing of an RNA secondary loop structure with a complementary base which lies somewhere outside of the loop. The result is a structure, which plays a vital role in cell structure rigidity, regulation of protein synthesis, and in the structural organization of RNA complexes. Deciphering RNA folding patterns would begin to unravel some of the mysteries surrounding the cell and its functions and open a new world to scientists. Many algorithms have been written in this quest to predict RNA's secondary structure but not many have been very successful.

In this …

Systems Integration With Dlsi, Tarun Preet S. Bedi May 2004

Systems Integration With Dlsi, Tarun Preet S. Bedi

Theses

Systems integration aims to provide a homogenous view to a system consisting of many heterogeneous systems. Systems integration can be achieved by many means out of which the middleware approach is the most popular. This is because middleware can be built around existing systems thereby reducing the amount of changes needed for the integration. Nowadays many middleware technologies are available to integrate heterogeneous systems. One can chose among them depending upon the requirements. But due to the many technologies available for Middleware, a muddle of middleware exists. To reduce this muddle and to integrate the systems already implemented using different …

The World Wide Web is emerging not only as an infrastructure for data, but also for a broader variety of resources that are increasingly being made available as Web services. Relevant current standards like UDDI, WSDL, and SOAP are in their fledgling years and form the basis of making Web services a workable and broadly adopted technology. However, realizing the fuller scope of the promise of Web services and associated service oriented architecture will requite further technological advances in the areas of service interoperation, service discovery, service composition, and process orchestration. Semantics, especially as supported by the use of ontologies, …

Text Is Software Too, Alexander Dekhtyar, Jane Huffman Hayes, Tim Menzies May 2004

Text Is Software Too, Alexander Dekhtyar, Jane Huffman Hayes, Tim Menzies

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Software compiles and therefore is characterized by a parseable grammar. Natural language text rarely conforms to prescriptive grammars and therefore is much harder to parse. Mining parseable structures is easier than mining less structured entities. Therefore, most work on mining repositories focuses on software, not natural language text. Here, we report experiments with mining natural language text (requirements documents) suggesting that: (a) mining natural language is not too diffcult, so (b) software repositories should routinely be augmented with all the natural language text used to develop that software.

Dynamic Robot Networks: A Coordination Platform For Multi-Robot Systems, Christopher M. Clark May 2004

Dynamic Robot Networks: A Coordination Platform For Multi-Robot Systems, Christopher M. Clark

Computer Science and Software Engineering

A large number of tasks, from manufacturing to planetary exploration, have been successfully accomplished using single robot systems. Many of these tasks could be completed faster, more reliably, and on a larger scale using a cooperating team of autonomous mobile robots. However, robots must be able to coordinate their actions before cooperation is possible. This work aims to enable robots with the ability to coordinate their actions for safe navigation in dynamic, unknown environments. Specifically, the work focuses on: 1) the coordination of multiple robots when sensing and inter-robot communication are limited and 2) multi-robot motion planning in dynamic, unknown …

Indexing Genomic Databases, Gina Cooper, Michael L. Raymer, Travis E. Doom, Dan E. Krane, Natsuhiko Futamura

Kno.e.sis Publications

Current biological sequence comparison tools utilize full database searches to find approximate matches between a database and a query. A new approach to sequence comparisons can be performed by indexing the database using a novel indexing scheme. An indexed scheme can immediately eliminate highly mismatched sequences thereby improving performance and accuracy. iBlast is proposed as an indexed version of BLAST. In its initial implementation, iBlast uses a sequence-based index to catalog genomic databases in an NCR Teradata RDBMS. Several types of indexes and querying methods are explored to determine the most efficient solution utilizing the parallel nature of the Teradata …

Performance Planning, Quality-Of-Service, And Pricing Under Competition, Corinne Touati, Parijat Dube, Laura Wynter

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this work we model the relationship between the capacity and the Quality of Service (QoS) offered by the firm in a competitive scenario of two firm’s working to maximize their profits. Using simple queueing theoretic models we study the sensitivity of a firm’s market share to price, capacity and market size. Our preliminary studies yield important properties of the equilibrium solution which may further provide important “engineering” guidelines for performance planning and pricing strategies.

Run-Time Modification Of The Class Hierachy In A Live Java Development Environment, Joel R. Brandt May 2004

Run-Time Modification Of The Class Hierachy In A Live Java Development Environment, Joel R. Brandt

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Class hierarchy design is central to object-oriented software development. How-ever, it is sometimes difficult for developers to anticipate all the implications of a design until implementation is underway. To support experimentation with different designs, we extend prior work on live development environments to allow run-time modification of the class hierarchy. The result is a more fluid object-oriented development process, in which immediate feedback from the executing program can be used to guide hierarchy design. This thesis presents a framework and developer support for run-time modification of class inheritance relations in JPie, a live visual programming environment for Java. Most notably, …

A Vulnerability Assessment Of The East Tennessee State University Administrative Computer Network., James Patrick Ashe May 2004

A Vulnerability Assessment Of The East Tennessee State University Administrative Computer Network., James Patrick Ashe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A three phase audit of East Tennessee State University's administrative computer network was conducted during Fall 2001, Spring 2002, and January 2004. Nmap and Nessus were used to collect the vulnerability data. Analysis discovered an average of 3.065 critical vulnerabilities per host with a low of 2.377 in Spring 2001 to a high of 3.694 in Fall 2001. The number of unpatched Windows operating system vulnerabilities, which accounted for over 75% of these critical vulnerabilities, strongly argues for the need of an automated patch deployment system for the approximately 3,000 Windows-based systems at ETSU.

Mool: An Object-Oriented Programming Language With Generics And Modules., María Lucía Barrón Estrada May 2004

Mool: An Object-Oriented Programming Language With Generics And Modules., María Lucía Barrón Estrada

Theses and Dissertations

Modern object-oriented languages like Java and C# do not support parametric polymorphism and do not have a traditional module system to allow the development of large systems. They overload the class mechanism with several tasks and they use packages and namespaces to organize clusters of classes providing weak control for accessing members. Other languages that support generic programming and objects do not have a simple object model to support object-oriented features. In this thesis the language MOOL is presented. MOOL is a class-based object-oriented language that supports modular programming and genericity. The main goal in the design of MOOL was …

A Holesome File System, Darren Erik Vengroff, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

We present a novel approach to fully dynamic management of physical disk blocks in Unix file systems. By adding a single system call, zero, to an existing file system, we permit applications to create holes, that is, regions of files to which no physical disk blocks are allocated, far more flexibly than previously possible. zero can create holes in the middle of existing files. Using zero, it is possible to efficiently implement applications including a variety of databases and I/O-efficient computation systems on top of the Unix file system. zero can also be used to implement an efficient file-system-based paging …

Discovering The Potential For Advancements In Intrusion Detection Systems, Kenneth J. Buonforte Apr 2004

Discovering The Potential For Advancements In Intrusion Detection Systems, Kenneth J. Buonforte

Honors Theses

An intrusion detection system (IDS) is a collection of monitors strategically placed on a network or individual host in order to detect anomalous behavior. Since James Anderson introduced one of the first frameworks for an intrusion detection system in [1]. researchers have extended the capabilities of these systems. IDSs take many forms, from systems as basic as command line audit logs to those that emulate the defense mechanisms of the human immune system. However, as intrusion detection has evolved, scientists and administrators alike are beginning to question the need for this technology due to its lack of quantifiable performance and …

Removing Excess Topology From Isosurfaces, Zoë J. Wood, Hugues Hoppe, Mathieu Desbrun, Peter Shröder Apr 2004

Removing Excess Topology From Isosurfaces, Zoë J. Wood, Hugues Hoppe, Mathieu Desbrun, Peter Shröder

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Many high-resolution surfaces are created through isosurface extraction from volumetric representations, obtained by 3D photography, CT, or MRI. Noise inherent in the acquisition process can lead to geometrical and topological errors. Reducing geometrical errors during reconstruction is well studied. However, isosurfaces often contain many topological errors in the form of tiny handles. These nearly invisible artifacts hinder subsequent operations like mesh simplification, remeshing, and parametrization. In this article we present a practical method for removing handles in an isosurface. Our algorithm makes an axis-aligned sweep through the volume to locate handles, compute their sizes, and selectively remove them. The algorithm …

Workflow management systems (WfMSs) have been used to support various types of business processes for more than a decade now. In workflows or Web processes for e-commerce and Web service applications, suppliers and customers define a binding agreement or contract between the two parties, specifying quality of service (QoS) items such as products or services to be delivered, deadlines, quality of products, and cost of services. The management of QoS metrics directly impacts the success of organizations participating in e-commerce. Therefore, when services or products are created or managed using workflows or Web processes, the underlying workflow engine must accept …
