An Efficient Scheme For Authenticating Public Keys In Sensor Networks, Wenliang Du, Ronghua Wang, Peng Ning Jan 2005

An Efficient Scheme For Authenticating Public Keys In Sensor Networks, Wenliang Du, Ronghua Wang, Peng Ning

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

With the advance of technology, Public Key Cryptography (PKC) will sooner or later be widely used in wireless sensor networks. Recently, it has been shown that the performance of some public key algorithms, such as Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC), is already close to being practical on sensor nodes. However, the energy consumption of PKC is still expensive, especially compared to symmetric-key algorithms. To maximize the lifetime of batteries, we should minimize the use of PKC whenever possible in sensor networks. This paper investigates how to replace one of the important PKC operations–the public key authentication–with symmetric key operations that are …

Polymorphic Self-* Agents For Stigmergic Fault Mitigation In Large-Scale Real-Time Embedded Systems, Derek Messie, Jae C. Oh

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Organization and coordination of agents within large-scale, complex, distributed environments is one of the primary challenges in the field of multi-agent systems. A lot of interest has surfaced recently around self-* (self-organizing, self-managing, self-optimizing, self-protecting) agents. This paper presents polymorphic self-* agents that evolve a core set of roles and behavior based on environmental cues. The agents adapt these roles based on the changing demands of the environment, and are directly implementable in computer systems applications. The design combines strategies from game theory, stigmergy, and other biologically inspired models to address fault mitigation in large-scale, real-time, distributed systems. The agents …

Pigtail: A Pig Addendum, Todd W. Neller, Clifton G.M. Presser

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The object of the jeopardy dice game Pig is to be the first player to reach 100 points. Each turn, a player repeatedly rolls a die until either a 1 is rolled or the player holds and scores the sum of the rolls (i.e., the turn total). At any time during a player’s turn, the player is faced with two choices: roll or hold. If the player rolls a 1, the player scores nothing and it becomes the opponent’s turn. If the player rolls a number other than 1, the number is added to the player’s turn total …

Ranking Complex Relationships On The Semantic Web, Boanerges Aleman-Meza, Christian Halaschek-Wiener, I. Budak Arpinar, Cartic Ramakrishnan, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Industry and academia are both focusing their attention on information retrieval over semantic metadata extracted from the Web, and it is increasingly possible to analyze such metadata to discover interesting relationships. However, just as document ranking is a critical component in today's search engines, the ranking of complex relationships would be an important component in tomorrow's semantic Web engines. This article presents a flexible ranking approach to identify interesting and relevant relationships in the semantic Web. The authors demonstrate the scheme's effectiveness through an empirical evaluation over a real-world data set.

Literature Survey Of Wind Turbine Aeroelastic Stability, Scott M. Larwood Jan 2005

Literature Survey Of Wind Turbine Aeroelastic Stability, Scott M. Larwood

All Faculty Reports - School of Engineering and Computer Science

A literature survey of wind turbine aeroelastic stability is presented. The subject received early interest as the emergent wind industry looked to lessons from the helicopter industry. There has not been a utility-scale turbine with flutter problems, but there is a concern over the behavior of larger, more flexible turbines. Blades of innovative design with bend-twist coupling and tip sweep are also a concern. Much of the aerodynamic modeling was formulated in the 1930s by Theodorsen. Modern authors have developed finite element structural models for eigenvalue solutions to the stability models. Calculations for a 1.5 MW turbine blade with bend-twist …

How To Overcome The Knowledge Paradox: Activate Knowledge Identity, Not Just Organize Information, Sajda Qureshi, Peter Keen Jan 2005

How To Overcome The Knowledge Paradox: Activate Knowledge Identity, Not Just Organize Information, Sajda Qureshi, Peter Keen

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

A paradox appears to thwart traditional knowledge sharing efforts in organizations: the greater the benefit of a piece of knowledge to an organization the less likely that it will be shared. This paper suggests that in order to mobilize knowledge where there is demand for it, it has to be activated. This paper considers the knowledge identity of the person whose knowledge is to be activated and uses these identities to analyze a case study in which highly distributed knowledge is activated. The analysis reveals activation effects needed to mobilize each of the knowledge identities.

Framework For Semantic Web Process Composition, Kaarthik Sivashanmugam, John A. Miller, Amit P. Sheth, Kunal Verma Jan 2005

Framework For Semantic Web Process Composition, Kaarthik Sivashanmugam, John A. Miller, Amit P. Sheth, Kunal Verma

Kno.e.sis Publications

Web services have the potential to revolutionize e-commerce by enabling businesses to interact with each other on the fly. To date, however, Web processes using Web services have been created mostly at the syntactic level. Current composition standards focus on building processes based on the interface description of the participating services. This rigid approach, with its strong coupling between the process and the interface of the participating services, does not allow businesses to dynamically change partners and services. As shown in this article, Web process composition techniques can be enhanced by using semantic process templates to capture the semantic requirements …

Evaluation of non-functional properties of a design (such as performance, dependability, security, etc.) can be enabled by design annotations specific to the property to be evaluated. Performance properties, for instance, can be annotated on UML designs by using the "UML Profile for Schedulability, Performance and Time (SPT)". However the communication between the design description in UML and the tools used for non-functional properties evaluation requires support, particularly for performance where there are many alternative performance analysis tools that might be applied. This paper describes a tool architecture called PUMA, which provides a unified interface between different kinds of design information …

Transform Based And Search Aware Text Compression Schemes And Compressed Domain Text Retrieval, Nan Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent times, we have witnessed an unprecedented growth of textual information via the Internet, digital libraries and archival text in many applications. While a good fraction of this information is of transient interest, useful information of archival value will continue to accumulate. We need ways to manage, organize and transport this data from one point to the other on data communications links with limited bandwidth. We must also have means to speedily find the information we need from this huge mass of data. Sometimes, a single site may also contain large collections of data such as a library database, …
