Development Of A Methodology For Customizing Insider Threat Auditing On A Microsoft Windows Xp® Operating System, Terry E. Levoy
Development Of A Methodology For Customizing Insider Threat Auditing On A Microsoft Windows Xp® Operating System, Terry E. Levoy
Theses and Dissertations
Most organizations are aware that threats from trusted insiders pose a great risk to their organization and are very difficult to protect against. Auditing is recognized as an effective technique to detect malicious insider activities. However, current auditing methods are typically applied with a one-size-fits-all approach and may not be an appropriate mitigation strategy, especially towards insider threats. This research develops a 4-step methodology for designing a customized auditing template for a Microsoft Windows XP operating system. Two tailoring methods are presented which evaluate both by category and by configuration. Also developed are various metrics and weighting factors as a …
Mitigating Tcp Degradation Over Intermittent Link Failures Using Intermediate Buffers, M. Brent Reynolds
Mitigating Tcp Degradation Over Intermittent Link Failures Using Intermediate Buffers, M. Brent Reynolds
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis addresses the improvement of data transmission performance in a challenged network. It is well known that the popular Transmission Control Protocol degrades in environments where one or more of the links along the route is intermittently available. To avoid this degradation, this thesis proposes placing at least one node along the path of transmission to buffer and retransmit as needed to overcome the intermittent link. In the four-node, three-link testbed under particular conditions, file transmission time was reduced 20 fold in the case of an intermittent second link when the second node strategically buffers for retransmission opportunity.
Adaptive Interpolation Algorithms For Temporal-Oriented Datasets, Jun Gao
Adaptive Interpolation Algorithms For Temporal-Oriented Datasets, Jun Gao
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Spatiotemporal datasets can be classified into two categories: temporal-oriented and spatial-oriented datasets depending on whether missing spatiotemporal values are closer to the values of its temporal or spatial neighbors. We present an adaptive spatiotemporal interpolation model that can estimate the missing values in both categories of spatiotemporal datasets. The key parameters of the adaptive spatiotemporal interpolation model can be adjusted based on experience.
Cognitive Mapping Techniques For User-Database Interaction, Keng Siau, X. Tan
Cognitive Mapping Techniques For User-Database Interaction, Keng Siau, X. Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we first develop a framework of user-database interaction. Based on this framework, we then provide a discussion on how notable human factors influence various dimensions of user-database interaction. Following that, we propose using cognitive mapping techniques to overcome some cognitive and behavioral biases during user-database interaction. Three popular cognitive mapping techniques-causal mapping, semantic mapping, and concept mapping-are introduced as techniques to elicit an individual's belief systems regarding a problem domain. Through an example database application, we demonstrate how to use these cognitive mapping techniques to improve user-database interaction. Finally, we discuss the implications of this research for …
Security Analysis On A Conference Scheme For Mobile Communications, Zhiguo Wan, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng, A. L. Ananda
Security Analysis On A Conference Scheme For Mobile Communications, Zhiguo Wan, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng, A. L. Ananda
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The conference key distribution scheme (CKDS) enables three or more parties to derive a common conference key to protect the conversation content in their conference. Designing a conference key distribution scheme for mobile communications is a difficult task because wireless networks are more susceptible to attacks and mobile devices usually obtain low power and limited computing capability. In this paper we study a conference scheme for mobile communications and find that the scheme is insecure against the replay attack. With our replay attack, an attacker with a compromised conference key can cause the conferees to reuse the compromised conference key, …

On The Release Of Crls In Public Key Infrastructure, Chengyu Ma, Nan Hu, Yingjiu Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Public key infrastructure provides a promising foundation for verifying the authenticity of communicating parties and transferring trust over the internet. The key issue in public key infrastructure is how to process certificate revocations. Previous research in this aspect has concentrated on the tradeoffs that can be made among different revocation options. No rigorous efforts have been made to understand the probability distribution of certificate revocation requests based on real empirical data. In this study, we first collect real empirical data from VeriSign and derive the probability function for certificate revocation requests. We then prove that a revocation system will become …
Facial Analysis In Video : Detection And Recognition, Peichung Shih
Facial Analysis In Video : Detection And Recognition, Peichung Shih
Dissertations
Biometric authentication systems automatically identify or verify individuals using physiological (e.g., face, fingerprint, hand geometry, retina scan) or behavioral (e.g., speaking pattern, signature, keystroke dynamics) characteristics. Among these biometrics, facial patterns have the major advantage of being the least intrusive. Automatic face recognition systems thus have great potential in a wide spectrum of application areas. Focusing on facial analysis, this dissertation presents a face detection method and numerous feature extraction methods for face recognition.
Concerning face detection, a video-based frontal face detection method has been developed using motion analysis and color information to derive field of interests, and distribution-based distance …

Structural Auditing Methodologies For Controlled Terminologies, Hua Min
Structural Auditing Methodologies For Controlled Terminologies, Hua Min
Dissertations
Several auditing methodologies for large controlled terminologies are developed. These are applied to the Unified Medical Language System XXXX and the National Cancer Institute Thesaurus (NCIT). Structural auditing methodologies are based on the structural aspects such as IS-A hierarchy relationships groups of concepts assigned to semantic types and groups of relationships defined for concepts. Structurally uniform groups of concepts tend to be semantically uniform. Structural auditing methodologies focus on concepts with unlikely or rare configuration. These concepts have a high likelihood for errors.
One of the methodologies is based on comparing hierarchical relationships between the META and SN, two major …
Limited Delegation (Without Sharing Secrets) In Web Applications, Nicholas J. Santos
Limited Delegation (Without Sharing Secrets) In Web Applications, Nicholas J. Santos
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
Delegation is the process wherein an entity Alice designates an entity Bob to speak on her behalf. In password-based security systems, delegation is easy: Alice gives Bob her password. This is a useful feature, and is used often in the real world. But it's also problematic. When Alice shares her password, she must delegate all her permissions, but she may wish to delegate a limited set. Also, as we move towards PKI-based systems, secret-sharing becomes impractical. This thesis explores one solution to these problems. We use proxy certificates in a non-standard way so that user Alice can delegate a subset …

SYSTERS is a biological information integration system containing protein sequences from many protein databases such as Swiss-Prot and TrEMBL and also protein sequences from complete genomes available at Ensembl, The Arabidopsis Information Resource, SGD and GeneDB. For some protein sequences their encoding nucleotide sequences can be found in their corresponding websites. However, for some protein sequences their encoding nucleotide sequences are missing.
The goal of this thesis is to. collect all nucleotide sequences for the protein sequences in SYSTERS and store them in a common database. There are two cases. The first case is that if the nucleotide sequences can …
Separation Of Ssl Protocol Phases Across Process Boundaries, Kirthikar Anantharam
Separation Of Ssl Protocol Phases Across Process Boundaries, Kirthikar Anantharam
Theses
Secure Sockets Layer is the de-facto standard used in the industry today for secure communications through web sites. An SSL connection is established by performing a Handshake, which is followed by the Record phase. While the SSL Handshake is computationally intensive and can cause of bottlenecks on an application server, the Record phase can cause similar bottlenecks while encrypting large volumes of data.
SSL Accelerators have been used to improve the performance of SSL-based application servers. These devices are expensive, complex to configure and inflexible to customizations. By separating the SSL Handshake and the Record phases into separate software processes, …

Finding Role Errors Of The Ncit Gene Hierarchy Using The Ncbi, Marc Oren
Finding Role Errors Of The Ncit Gene Hierarchy Using The Ncbi, Marc Oren
Theses
Due to the knowledge discovery process of gene information, details such as organism and chromosomal location should be known. Furthermore, the extensive biomedical research in genomics led to discovery of processes and diseases in which a gene plays a role. In the Gene hierarchy of the NCI Thesaurus (NCIT) such knowledge is represented by appropriate roles. However, upon review of the Gene hierarchy of the NCIT, many role errors are found. Realizing that such details are provided by another knowledge repository of NIH, the NCBI gene database, a methodology is presented to use NCBI to discover role errors for the …

Temporal Data Mining In A Dynamic Feature Space, Brent K. Wenerstrom
Temporal Data Mining In A Dynamic Feature Space, Brent K. Wenerstrom
Theses and Dissertations
Many interesting real-world applications for temporal data mining are hindered by concept drift. One particular form of concept drift is characterized by changes to the underlying feature space. Seemingly little has been done to address this issue. This thesis presents FAE, an incremental ensemble approach to mining data subject to concept drift. FAE achieves better accuracies over four large datasets when compared with a similar incremental learning algorithm.

Distributed Computation In An Interactive Entertainment Environment, Robert Zinchak
Distributed Computation In An Interactive Entertainment Environment, Robert Zinchak
Computer Science Honors Theses
The proliferation of multiplayer games has led to an increase in the total network capacity for processing power in games; this capacity, however, is seldom fully utilized or balanced. One prominent problem of distributed processing in a gaming environment is increased latency time-- which causes player disinterest in the game, potentially causing poor sales as well as the termination of future commercial development of this technology. Existing distributed techniques such as OpenMP, MPI or VMPI are not well suited to gaming applications and may introduce additional overhead. This thesis describes a simple, yet effective technique (based on existing ideas in …
Artificial Societies, Virtual Worlds, And Their Meaningful Integration, Andrew Krausnick
Artificial Societies, Virtual Worlds, And Their Meaningful Integration, Andrew Krausnick
Computer Science Honors Theses
Artificial societies and virtual worlds are two areas of interest to modern social scientists that are distinctly separate in modern academic study, and are yet undeniably related. Artificial societies are multi-agent systems comprised of autonomous social agents, programmed with their own set of rules and behavior. While virtual worlds are occupied in large part by human controlled agents participating in a collective virtual experience and space. Within both types of virtual environments there can be found a scarcity of resources and intricate cross-entity interaction. This often results in the development and evolution of complex economic and cultural structures. In addition, …

Modeling And Simulation Of The Videoray Pro Iii Underwater Vehicle, Wei Wang, Christopher M. Clark
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Accurate modeling and simulation of underwater vehicles is essential for autonomous control. In this paper, we present a dynamic model of the VideoRay Pro III microROV, in which the hydrodynamic derivatives are determined both theoretically and experimentally, based on the assumption that the motions in different directions are decoupled. The experiments show that this assumption is reasonable within operating conditions of the VideoRay Pro III. A computer simulation with 3D graphics is also developed to help user to visualize the vehicle's motion.
Architectural Tradeoffs For Unifying Campus Grid Resources, Amy Apon, Bart Taylor
Architectural Tradeoffs For Unifying Campus Grid Resources, Amy Apon, Bart Taylor
Publications
Most universities have a powerful collection of computing resources on campus for use in areas from high performance computing to general access student labs. However, these resources are rarely used to their full potential. Grid computing offers a way to unify these resources and to better utilize the capability they provide. The complexity of some grid tools makes learning to use them a daunting task for users not familiar with using the command line. Combining these tools together into a single web portal interface provides campus faculty and students with an easy way to access the campus resources. This paper …
Towards Optimum Play-Out Buffering Delay In Voice Over Ip, Ruchir Pramod Shende
Towards Optimum Play-Out Buffering Delay In Voice Over Ip, Ruchir Pramod Shende
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) or transmission of real-time voice packets over the Internet is slowly emerging as a cost-effective alternative to the traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). However, varying end-to-end delay and packet loss, which are inherent in a packet-switched network like the Internet, lead to relatively lower quality of VoIP calls. The call quality can be improved by adaptively adjusting the play-out buffer at the receiver to reduce the impact of the delay and jitter. A standard play-out strategy uses a weighted moving average of the mean and variance of network delay to adaptively set the play-out …

Mutual Knowledge And Its Impact On Virtual Team Performance, Alanah Davis, Deepak Khazanchi
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
This paper describes the notion of mutual knowledge and its potential impact on virtual team performance. Based on a review of the literature, including proponents and opponents for the concept of mutual knowledge in group interaction, we suggest that there is a gap in our understanding of what is known about mutual knowledge as it impacts team dynamics and ultimately virtual team performance. We conclude the paper by discussing the importance of mutual knowledge for virtual team performance and the research issues that need to be addressed in this domain.

Electronic Medical Records: Barriers To Adoption And Diffusion, Halbana Tarmizi, Deepak Khazanchi, Cherie Noteboom
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
The primary goal of this paper is to explore why information technology (IT) solutions such as electronic medical records (EMR) have failed to gain a foothold in the healthcare sector. Based on a review of extant research, we propose a framework for classifying the barriers to the adoption and diffusion of EMR in the healthcare sector. We map all barriers reported in the literature onto the classification scheme to demonstrate its efficacy. We conclude by suggesting potential opportunities for applying the classification framework to research and practice.
