Tutorials For Software : A Comparison Of The Appleworks Software Tutorial With Pre-Entered Data And An Experimental Tutorial With User Entered Data, Toni L. Steil

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The attention directed toward computer software research has been sparse which is quite evident in particular facets such as learning methods, specifically towards tutorials. Some authors have identified various important issues which include cognitive factors, reduction of presentation of superfluous information, and the importance of interaction with software and hardware. The present . study examined two tutorials which were similar except in their level of required user behaviors. Tutorial A required only user manipulation of disk stored data. Tutorial B required the user to enter the data into the computer, design the screen format, and then to manipulate it. It …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In a target detection communication system, apparatus and method for determining the presence of probable targets based on contacts (which can indicate the presence of a target, noise, chatter, or objects not of interest) detected within a predefined position sector or sectors over a specified number of scans. The position of each detected contact, as a contact of interest, is compared with the positions of contacts detected at previous times or scans. Velocity profiles indicate which previous contacts support the likelihood that the contact of interest represents a target having a velocity within a defined band. The likelihood, which can …

Predicting Success In High School Computer Programming, John C. Gevedon Jul 1985

Predicting Success In High School Computer Programming, John C. Gevedon

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There are great differences in performance among students taking high school programming courses, and instructors debate over what elements contribute to these differences. Some students develop logical thinking abilities and problem solving techniques, while others fail to develop skills beyond memorization of specific terms and procedures. It is not known whether these differences are causally related to the specific educational environment or student backgrounds. Without more information, the factors that actually contribute to the success of high school students in computer programming courses cannot be accurately determined. It was the purpose of this study then to isolate certain student characteristics …

A Study Of Controlling Variables Using A Microcomputer Program Compared To The Piagetian Bending Rods Task, Rita Arlene Hrecz

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study compared two formats of controlling variables. Subjects' performance of controlling variables in the Piagetian Bending Rods Task was compared to their performance of controlling variables in the microcomputer interactive program called Measuring Gravitational Forces. The correlation result (0.78 on the Spearman rho and the Pearson Product Moment correlations) and results of the nonparametric Wilcoxon t test and the parametric correlated t indicated no statistically significant difference of subjects' performance of controlling variables in either task. No statistically significant gender difference of subjects' performance of either the Bending Rods Task or the Measuring Gravitational Forces computer program was found. …

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Network Load And Topology On The Performance Of Concurrency Control Algorithm In Distributed Database Systems, Anoop Singhal, Amit P. Sheth, Ming T. Liu Dec 1984

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Network Load And Topology On The Performance Of Concurrency Control Algorithm In Distributed Database Systems, Anoop Singhal, Amit P. Sheth, Ming T. Liu

Kno.e.sis Publications

Earlier studies in the performance analysis of concurrency control algorithms in distributed database systems (DDBS) have assumed that the message transmission time between any two nodes of a network is constant. Hence they disregard the effect of communication subnet related parameters such as network traffic, network topology, the capacity of transmission channels and the size of messages transmitted. In this paper an analytical model is used to estimate the delays in transmission channels for a DDBS in a long haul network. The analysis shows that the constant transmission time assumption cannot be justified in many cases and that response time …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

A set composed of 27 phages is described for differentiating Salmonella spp. representative of groups A, B, C1, C2, D1, D2, E1, E2, E3, E4, G1, K, and N. All of the 1,245 cultures used in this effort were typable and were differentiated on the basis of the 420 phage patterns observed. All results were reproducible. Characteristic phage patterns were produced by a variety of Salmonella serovars isolated from campus incidents and a number of hospital, family, restaurant, and processing plant outbreaks …

An Analytical Model For Evaluating Database Update Schemes, Kathryn C. Kinsley Jan 1983

An Analytical Model For Evaluating Database Update Schemes, Kathryn C. Kinsley

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A methodology is presented for evaluating the performance of database update schemes. The methodology uses the M/Hr/1 queueing model as a basis for this analysis and makes use of the history of how data is used in the database. Parameters have been introduced which can be set based on the characteristics of a specific system. These include update to retrieval ratio, average file size, overhead, block size and the expected number of items in the database. The analysis is specifically directed toward the support of derived data within the relational model. Three support methods are analyzed. These are first examined …

Some Design Considerations For Picture Archiving And Communication Systems, J. R. Cox, G. J. Blaine, R. L. Hill, R. G. Jost, C. D. Shum Jan 1983

Some Design Considerations For Picture Archiving And Communication Systems, J. R. Cox, G. J. Blaine, R. L. Hill, R. G. Jost, C. D. Shum

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Design considerations for picture archiving and communication systems are reviewed with special emphasis on those issues that differ from conventional network architectures. Design equations for three layers of a picture network are developed and discussed in the context of preliminary estimates of the flow of digital images between a multiplicity of picture sources, picture archives and picture viewing stations. Discussions of differences from conventional networks focuses on the local nature of the net, the availability of a wide-band transmission media with low error rates, the relative costliness of network equipment capable of taking advantage of the wide-band transmission media and …

Probabilistic Simulations, Nicholas J. Pippenger Jan 1982

Probabilistic Simulations, Nicholas J. Pippenger

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The results of this paper concern the question of how fast machines with one type of storage media can simulate machines with a different type of storage media. Most work on this question has focused on the question of how fast one deterministic machine can simulate another. In this paper we shall look at the question of how fast a probabilistic machine can simulate another. This approach should be of interest in its own right, in view of the great attention that probabilistic algorithms have recently attracted.

Robotics And The Conservation Of Human Resources, Robert U. Ayres, Steven M. Miller Jan 1982

Robotics And The Conservation Of Human Resources, Robert U. Ayres, Steven M. Miller

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Due to rapid expansion in the field of robotics, policy issues have arisen in regard to developing human skills to deal with the new technology and to deal with the obsolescent human skills which are the inevitable result of this growth pattern. Industrialists, educators, union leaders, and government officials must work cooperatively to insure that the coming changes are made with minimum disruption. Improved training methods and courses have to be developed for the skills needed to control, manage and supervise the new machines. Some of the ways in which this can be accomplished are through offering financial incentives for …

Hierarchical Analysis Of A Distributed Evaluator, Robert M. Keller, Gary Lindstrom

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We outline the analysis of a distributed evaluator for an applicative language FGL (Function Graph Language). Our goal is to show that the least fixed point semantics of FGL are faithfully implemented by the hardware evaluator envisioned in the Applicative Multi-Processor System AMPS. Included in the analysis are a formalization of demand-driven computation , the introduction of an intermediate graphic language IGL to aid in our proofs, and discussion of pragmatic issues involved in the AMPS machine language design.

Comparative Schematology And Pebbling With Auxiliary Pushdowns, Nicholas J. Pippenger Jan 1980

Comparative Schematology And Pebbling With Auxiliary Pushdowns, Nicholas J. Pippenger

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

This paper has three claims to interest. First, it combines comparative schematology with complexity theory. This combination is capable of distinguishing among Strong's “languages of maximal power,” a distinction not possible when comparative schematology is based on computability considerations alone, and it is capable of establishing exponential disparities in running times, a capability not currently possessed by complexity theory alone. Secondly, this paper inaugurates the study of pebbling with auxiliary pushdowns, which bears to plain pebbling the same relationship as Cook's study of space-bounded machines with auxiliary pushdowns bears to plain space-bounded machines. This extension of pebbling serves as the …
