Towards The Integration Of Object-Oriented Constructs Within Structured Query Language (Sql), Paul Francis Rabuck Jan 1992

Towards The Integration Of Object-Oriented Constructs Within Structured Query Language (Sql), Paul Francis Rabuck

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper explores the possibility of coupling SQL with a semantic data model. For this study, the primary objective was to build a working prototype of a program that allows a database designer to define data objects and their respective interrelationships using the Object-oriented Semantic Association Model (OSAM*).

The prototype isolates from the designer the low level commands (i.e., CREATE TABLE, CREATE INDEX) which comprise the SQL data definition language (DOL). Once the objects are defined by the designer, the prototype generates the relational database table definitions without the designer having to directly use the SQL DOL.

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Reading From A Vdu And From Paper As Measured In Terms Of Reading Speed And Comprehension, Elizabeth Payumo

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study investigates the legibility and visual effects of eight combinations of font and colour on VDU and two different fonts on paper. Forty subjects, sixteen females and twenty-four males, were exposed to three of the ten different conditions, one in each of the set of readings, on either VDU or paper. They were asked to read different sets of stories in each condition on different days where each condition lasted for approximately two hours. Reading speed and comprehension scores were measured in every story read in the set of stories. The change of mood and physical symptoms states of …

An Investigation Of Ibm Pc Computer Viruses Infection Rates And Types In A Western Australian Environment, Boon Guan Lee Jan 1992

An Investigation Of Ibm Pc Computer Viruses Infection Rates And Types In A Western Australian Environment, Boon Guan Lee

Theses : Honours

In recent years computer viruses have become increasingly significant as a form of computer abuse. By virtue of their reproductive capability, computer viruses can have cumulative and potentially catastrophic effects to the many people who use those affected computers. There is a growing concern in the computing community about these forms of electronic vandalism. This concern arises from the possible damage to stored information on which the work depends and the ensuing disruption of the work-place. Although the vandalism or purposeful abuse by introducing computer viruses to computer systems was originally mainly an American experience, research reports published by the …

Editing Digital Audio Using A Perceptual Model, J. Mark Goode Dec 1991

Editing Digital Audio Using A Perceptual Model, J. Mark Goode

Theses

In this paper we describe an intelligent system used to aid an audio recording producer in the selection of edit points in a musical sequence. It is possible to make meaningful recommendations concerning auditory input data without the ability to fully classify that data or interpret all outside goals. Perceptual modeling of the auditory input can allow sufficient reasoning ability for an intelligent system to be of use editing digital audio. To create a perceptual model, the information which can be extracted by the ear is embodied in several expert sections which communicate with a rule based decision maker via …

Specifying Interdatabase Dependencies In A Multidatabase Environment, Marek Rusinkiewicz, Amit P. Sheth, George Karabatis Dec 1991

Specifying Interdatabase Dependencies In A Multidatabase Environment, Marek Rusinkiewicz, Amit P. Sheth, George Karabatis

Kno.e.sis Publications

The problem of interdatabase dependencies and the effect they have on applications updating interdependent data are addressed. A model that allows specifications of constraints among multiple databases in a declarative fashion is proposed. The separation of the constraints from the application programs facilitates the maintenance of data constraints and allows flexibility in their implementation. It allows investigation of various mechanisms for enforcing the constraints, independently of the application programs. By grouping the constraints together, it is possible to check their completeness and discover possible contradictions among them. The concepts of polytransactions, which use interdatabase dependencies to generate a series of …

An Event Driven State Based Interface For Synthetic Environments, Mark J. Gerken Dec 1991

An Event Driven State Based Interface For Synthetic Environments, Mark J. Gerken

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) has produced synthetic environments using head mounted displays (HMDs) and hand measurement devices. This thesis is a continuation of AFIT synthetic environment research. Hand measurement data from a VPL DataGlove is combined with hand orientation and translational data to define a set of valid gestures. These gestures form the basis of an input language for class of finite automata known as finite state machines. Using the input symbols from this language, the user may define a finite state machine which associates a stream of input symbols with one or more …

A Cache Design To Exploit Structural Locality, Curtis M. Winstead Dec 1991

A Cache Design To Exploit Structural Locality, Curtis M. Winstead

Theses and Dissertations

A design and VHDL implementation of a content-addressable memory (CAM) to exploit structural locality is the subject of this research. The concept of structural locality is that memory locations are referenced in the same order as they were previously referenced. Therefore, if memory locations that exhibit structural locality can be made available to the CPU (Center Processing Unit) through a fast data store, an increase in speed of the computer system can be realized. The CAM's purpose is to store memory references in the order they were used by the CPU and prefetch these locations to a smaller on- chip …

Real Imagery As A Three Dimensional Display, Juan C. Echeverry Dec 1991

Real Imagery As A Three Dimensional Display, Juan C. Echeverry

Theses and Dissertations

This research effort implemented two 3-D display designs to assess their performance and effect on an observer's depth perception. Both 3-D displays produced real images for the observer to view. The first display setup combined a lens relay with a two concave mirror projector. The second display setup combined the two concave mirror projector with a diffuser. The lens relay/ two concave mirror projector combination was successful in imaging a source from the CRT to a point in space above the two mirror system. The problem was that the observer could not assess the image location by just looking at …

Reducing Requirements Errors Through The Use Of Computer-Aided Software Engineering (Case) Tools And During Requirements Analysis, Marvin B. Key Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated whether using CASE tools in the requirements analysis phase of software development reduced the software coding errors attributable to requirement analysis. A survey of the population gathered data as to the current practices and efforts in the use of CASE tools. The data was gathered in two groups: a control group and a sample group. The data was analyzed by group and in various combinations to obtain a greater understanding into population trends and tendencies. The results of the research indicate that the Air Force does not use CASE tools to any great extent. Also, error and …

A Common Application Model For Interfacing With Advanced Program To Program Communication/Vm, Joseph Viviano Jr. Oct 1991

A Common Application Model For Interfacing With Advanced Program To Program Communication/Vm, Joseph Viviano Jr.

Theses

The Merrill Lynch data processing environment is composed of a conglomeration of applications which reside on various platforms. LAN and minicomputer based applications coexist with those making their home in the mainframe arena. Unfortunately, coexistence does not imply cooperation, data uniformity, data centralization or coordinated application development. Within the Merrill Lynch mainframe arena alone there are two operating systems which reside across several computing complexes, MVS (Multiple Virtual Storage) and VM (Virtual Machine). Critical business applications and data are unique to each of these environments. The problem lies in the need for cooperative processing and sharing of distributed data among …

Visual Interaction: A Link Between Perception And Problem Solving, Erika Rogers, Ronald C. Arkin Oct 1991

Visual Interaction: A Link Between Perception And Problem Solving, Erika Rogers, Ronald C. Arkin

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The approach taken in this research is to develop a cognitive model of how a human observer extracts information from a visual display and then uses this perceptual information in a decision-making task. Knowledge about this relationship provides information about the occurrence of perceptual events in the course of problem-solving activities, and suggests that perceptual assistance in the form of image enhancements is a useful supplement to the user’s own abilities. This knowledge is then to be embedded in an intelligent computerized assistant which is designed to facilitate and stimulate the human problem-solving process.

Approaches To High Speed Networks, Frank Charles Paterra Oct 1991

Approaches To High Speed Networks, Frank Charles Paterra

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

This work investigates possible methods by which existing potentially available communication bandwidth can be used by communication intensive applications. Presently fiber optic media are available that can provide multiple gigabits of throughput. Unfortunately, because of the computation overhead required to insure that data are reliably transmitted this capacity has not been tapped.

A survey of work toward enabling the use of the potential bandwidth is presented. The parallel paradigm is identified as a strong candidate for providing significant increases in system usable bandwidth. Performing communication processing in parallel, however, presents the developer with several implementation options. These options are considered …

Constrained-Latency Storage Access: A Survey Of Application Requirements And Storage System Design Approaches, Richard Staehli, Jonathan Walpole Oct 1991

Constrained-Latency Storage Access: A Survey Of Application Requirements And Storage System Design Approaches, Richard Staehli, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Applications with Constrained Latency Storage Access (CLSA) are those that have large storage needs and hard constraints on the amount of latency they can tolerate. Such applications present a problem when the storage technology that is cost effective and large enough cannot meet their latency constraints for demand fetching. Examples are found in the developing field of multimedia computing and, to a lesser extent, in real-time database literature. This paper examines the nature of timing constraints at the application-storage interface and defines a classification for both the synchronization constraints of the application and the latency characteristics of the storage system. …

Fast Symmetric Graph Drawing: Theory And Realization, R. T. Pacheco, J. B. Manning Jul 1991

Fast Symmetric Graph Drawing: Theory And Realization, R. T. Pacheco, J. B. Manning

Computer Science Technical Reports

This thesis explores the computational techniques necessary to efficiently realize certain optimal algorithms for the production of drawings which exhibit maximum axial and rotational symmetries of abstract graphs.

The problem of geometric symmetry detection for general graphs has been shown to be NP-complete. However, optimal algorithms have recently been established for the detection of symmetry in trees, outerplanar graphs, and embedded planar graphs. This thesis focuses on the utilization of these algorithms to efficiently produce maximally symmetric drawings of graphs from the classes of symmetric trees and outerplanar graphs.

The construction of symmetric tree drawings is presented first. Following a …

Hidden Markov Model For Visual Guidance Of Robot Motion In Dynamic Environment, Qiuming Zhu Jun 1991

Hidden Markov Model For Visual Guidance Of Robot Motion In Dynamic Environment, Qiuming Zhu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Models and control strategies for dynamic obstacle avoidance in visual guidance of mobile robot are presented. Characteristics that distinguish the visual computation and motion-control requirements in dynamic environments from that in static environments are discussed. Objectives of the vision and motion planning are formulated as: 1) finding a collision-free trajectory that takes account of any possible motions of obstacles in the local environment; 2) such a trajectory should be consistent with a global goal or plan of the motion; and 3) the robot should move at as high a speed as possible, subject to its kinematic constraints. A stochastic motion-control …

Time Delay Neural Networks And Speech Recognition: Context Independence Of Stops In Different Vowel Environments, Gregory Andrew Makowski

Masters Theses

A series of speech recognition experiments was conducted to investigate time-dynamic speech recognition of stop consonants invariant of vowel environment using data from six talkers. The speech preprocessing was based on previous studies investigating acoustic characteristics which correlate to the place of articulation (Blumstein and Stevens 1979). The place of articulation features were statistically abstracted using four moments and the energy level of the speech sample.

Both statistical and neural network pattern recognition methods were used. Statistical methods included linear and quadratic discriminant functions, maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and K-nearest neighbors (KNN). The neural network approach used was Time Delay …

Visual Interaction In Diagnostic Radiology, Erika Rogers, Ronald C. Arkin, M. Baron May 1991

Visual Interaction In Diagnostic Radiology, Erika Rogers, Ronald C. Arkin, M. Baron

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The concept of Visual Interaction is introduced as the process which links perception and problem-solving such that problem-solving is affected by what is seen, and conversely, what is seen and perceived is affected by the current state of the problem-solving process. This paper describes the development of a cognitively-based model of the visual interaction process in diagnostic radiology, and shows how aspects of this model are being incorporated into the design and implementation of an intelligent computer-based radiological assistant. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to extract information about the nature and type of knowledge involved in this …

On The Relationship Between Parsimonious Covering And Boolean Minimization, Venu Dasigi, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan May 1991

On The Relationship Between Parsimonious Covering And Boolean Minimization, Venu Dasigi, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Kno.e.sis Publications

Minimization of Boolean switching functions is a basic problem in the design of logic circuits. The designer first comes up with a switching function expressed in terms of several binary input variables that satisfies the desired functionality, and then attempts to minimize the function as a sum of products or product of sums. It turns out that a sum of products form of a switching function that has no redundancy is a union of prime implicants of the function.

In this paper we would like to explicate some of the relationships of the boolean minimization problem to a formalization of …

On Serializability Of Multidatabase Transactions Through Forced Local Conflict, Dimitrios Georgakopoulos, Marek Rusinkiewicz, Amit P. Sheth Apr 1991

On Serializability Of Multidatabase Transactions Through Forced Local Conflict, Dimitrios Georgakopoulos, Marek Rusinkiewicz, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The main difficulty in enforcing global serializability in a multidatabase environment lies in resolving indirect transitive conflicts between multidatabase transactions. Indirect conflicts introduced by local transactions are difficult to resolve because the behavior or even the existence of local transactions is not known to the multidatabase system. To overcome these problems, we propose to incorporate additional data manipulation operations in the subtransactions of each multidatabase transaction. We show that if these operations create direct conflicts between subtransactions at each participating local database system, indirect conflicts can be resolved even if the multidatabase system is not aware of their existence. Based …
