Vulnerability Assessment Using A Fuzzy Logic Based Method, Richard W. Fleming Dec 1993

Vulnerability Assessment Using A Fuzzy Logic Based Method, Richard W. Fleming

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis demonstrates the feasibility of using qualitative analysis methods to evaluate computer security vulnerabilities. Although many risk analysis systems exist, few provide for the adequate analysis of identified vulnerabilities. While the main focus of this thesis is to evaluate computer security vulnerabilities, the methods involved have application in other areas requiring evaluation using qualitative methods. It is proposed, and demonstrated by this thesis, that the use of qualitative analysis using linguistic variables to describe the impact of computer security vulnerabilities is not only feasible, but intrinsically easier to understand and use than quantitative methods.

Semantics-Based Information Brokering: A Step Towards Realizing The Infocosm, Vipul Kashyap, Amit P. Sheth Oct 1993

Semantics-Based Information Brokering: A Step Towards Realizing The Infocosm, Vipul Kashyap, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The rapid advances in computer and communication technologies, and their merger, is leading to a global information market place. It will consist of federations of very large number of information systems that will cooperate to varying extents to support the users' information needs. We propose an architecture which may facilitate meeting these needs. It consists of three main components: information providers, information brokers and information consumers. We also propose an approach to information brokering. We discuss two of it's tasks: information resource discovery, which identities relevant information sources for a given query, and query processing, which involves the generation of …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Certain Metrics In Measuring The Quality Of End User Documentation, Ronald Morrison Aug 1993

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Certain Metrics In Measuring The Quality Of End User Documentation, Ronald Morrison

Dissertations and Theses

Traditional methods of evaluating quality in computer end user documentation have been subjective in nature, and have not been widely used in practice. Attempts to quantify quality and more narrowly define the essential features of quality have been limited -- leaving the issue of quality largely up to the writer of the user manual.

Quantifiable measures from the literature, especially Velotta (1992) and Brockman (1990), have been assembled into a set of uniformly weighted metrics for the measurement of document quality. This measure has been applied to the end user documentation of eighty-two personal computer packages. End user documentation is …

Specifying And Enforcing Intertask Dependencies, Paul Attie, Munindar Singh, Amit P. Sheth, Marek Rusinkiewicz Aug 1993

Specifying And Enforcing Intertask Dependencies, Paul Attie, Munindar Singh, Amit P. Sheth, Marek Rusinkiewicz

Kno.e.sis Publications

Extensions of the traditional atomic transaction model are needed to support the development of multi-system applications or workflows that access heterogeneous databases and legacy application systems. Most extended transaction models use conditions involving events or dependencies between transactions. Intertask dependencies can serve as a uniform framework for defining extended transaction models. In this paper we introduce event attributes needed to determine whether a dependency is enforceable and to properly schedule events in extended transaction models. Using these attributes and a formalization of a dependency into the temporal logic CTL, we can automatically synthesize an automaton that captures the computations that …

A Network Management Tool For The University Of Tennessee At Chattanooga Using Simple Network Management Protocol, Ghasem Shojaie Aug 1993

A Network Management Tool For The University Of Tennessee At Chattanooga Using Simple Network Management Protocol, Ghasem Shojaie

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This research is an attempt to develop a general purpose network management tool, using the Simple Network Management Protocol, for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC). This tool is intended to be a non vendor specific application that runs on very low cost hardware, yet provides the primary functions one needs to monitor the health of network devices such as routers and bridges. The Simple Network Management Protocol was chosen because it is an industry standard. It has fewer operators than other network management protocols; therefore, it is simpler to implement. Because of the type of network that is …

Facial Image Retrieval, Identification, And Inference System, Jian Kang Wu, Yew Hock Ang, Chiam Prong Lam, S. K. Moorthy, Arcot Desai Narasimhalu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recognition of a human face is very easy even to a child, but is extremely difficult for computers. Here we present a Computer Aided Facial Image Identification, Retrieval and Inference System (CAFIIRIS) for criminal identification. The system stores and manages facial images and criminal records, providing necessary image and text processing, and editing tools. Inference of facial images of different ages of a person is also possible. Access to facial images can be done via key words, fuzzy descriptions, and visual browsing.

A Framework For Controlling Cooperative Agents, Kuo-Chu Lee, William H. Mansfield, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Presents an overview of the ITX (Interacting Transaction) system, which supports complex interactions among cooperating agents in the presence of user interventions that change application objectives and system failures. The system's components and its unique fixed-point criterion for feedback control of iterative interactions are described. An example of a simplified multimedia teleconferencing application is discussed to illustrate the features of the ITX system.

Performance Of A Token-Passing System With Batch Arrivals And Its Application To File Transfers, Robert H. Deng, Xuanyu Zhang, Kuan Tase Huang Jul 1993

Performance Of A Token-Passing System With Batch Arrivals And Its Application To File Transfers, Robert H. Deng, Xuanyu Zhang, Kuan Tase Huang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper investigates the performance of token-passing systems with limited service and Poisson arrivals. For pure Poisson arrivals, the Laplace-Stieltjes Transform (LST) of an approximate customer/packet waiting time distribution is derived and expressed as a functional equation, from which the approximate mean and variance of waiting time are obtained; for batch Poisson arrivals, an approximate mean of waiting time is derived. Mean waiting time approximations are compared against both simulation results and other results presented in the literature; the variance approximation is evaluated by comparing it to simulation results only, since no other results on variance have been reported so …

Multilevel Parallel Communications, Sanjay Khanna Jul 1993

Multilevel Parallel Communications, Sanjay Khanna

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

The research reported in this thesis investigates the use of parallelism at multiple levels to realize high-speed networks that offer advantages in throughput, cost, reliability, and flexibility over alternative approaches. This research specifically considers use of parallelism at two levels: the "upper" level and the "lower" level. At the upper level, N protocol processors perform functions included in the transport and network layers. At the lower level, M channels provide data and physical layer functions. The resulting system provides very high bandwidth to an application. A key concept of this research is the use of replicated channels to provide a …

A Framework For Data Sharing In Computer Supported Cooperative Environments, Mohamed Youssef Eltoweissy Jul 1993

A Framework For Data Sharing In Computer Supported Cooperative Environments, Mohamed Youssef Eltoweissy

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Concurrency control is an indispensable part of any information sharing system. Co-operative work introduces new requirements for concurrency control which cannot be met using existing applications and database management systems developed for non-cooperative environments. The emphasis of concurrency control in conventional database management systems is to keep users and their applications from inadvertently corrupting data rather than support a workgroup develop a product together. This "insular" approach is necessary because applications that access the database have been built with the assumptions that they have exclusive access to the data they manipulate and that users of these applications are generally oblivious …

Performance Analysis Of Interconnected Lans With Server/Client Configuration, Jiangling Du, Robert H. Deng, Chi Chung Ko Jul 1993

Performance Analysis Of Interconnected Lans With Server/Client Configuration, Jiangling Du, Robert H. Deng, Chi Chung Ko

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we study the end-to-end performance of interconnected local area networks (LAN) with server/client configuration. The system uses bridges to connect two token-ring LANs through a high-speed communication link. A server station located on one LAN receives requests from client-stations on the same LAN as well as on the remote LAN, processes the requests, and returns responses to the client-stations. The end-to-end connections of the interconnected network are modelled as single-chain and multiple-chain closed queueing systems, which are solved by an iterative algorithm based on the MVA (mean value analysis) method. The performance examples are shown in terms …

Implementing A Tool For Designing Portable Parallel Programs, Geetha Chitti May 1993

Implementing A Tool For Designing Portable Parallel Programs, Geetha Chitti

Theses

The Implementation aspects of a novel parallel programming model called Cluster-M is presented in this thesis. This model provides an environment for efficiently designing highly parallel portable software. The two main components of this model are Cluster-M Specifications and Cluster-M Representations. A Cluster-M Specification consists of a number of clustering levels emphasizing computation and communication requirements of a parallel solution to a given problem. A Cluster-M Representation on the other hand, represents a multi-layered partitioning of a system graph corresponding to the topology of the target architecture. A set of basic constructs essential for writing Cluster-M Specifications using PCN are …

The Interpolating Random Spline Cryptosystem And The Chaotic-Map Public-Key Cryptosystem, Fengi Hwu, Chung You Ho May 1993

The Interpolating Random Spline Cryptosystem And The Chaotic-Map Public-Key Cryptosystem, Fengi Hwu, Chung You Ho

Computer Science Technical Reports

The feasibility of implementing the interpolating cubic spline function as encryption and decryption transformations is presented. The encryption method can be viewed as computing a transposed polynomial. The main characteristic of the spline cryptosystem is that the domain and range of encryption are defined over real numbers, instead of the traditional integer numbers. Moreover, the spline cryptosystem can be implemented in terms of inexpensive multiplications and additions.

Using spline functions, a series of discontiguous spline segments can execute the modular arithmetic of the RSA system. The similarity of the RSA and spline functions within the integer domain is demonstrated. Furthermore, …

Development Of A Visual System Interface To Support A Domain-Oriented Application Composition System, Timothy L. Weide Mar 1993

Development Of A Visual System Interface To Support A Domain-Oriented Application Composition System, Timothy L. Weide

Theses and Dissertations

This research designed and prototyped a visual system interface to generate, display, and modify domain-oriented application specifications. A visual system interface, called the Architect Visual System Interface (AVSI), supplements a text-based environment, called Architect, previously developed by two other students. Using canonical formal specifications of domain objects, Architect rapidly composes these specifications into a software application and executes a prototype of that application as a means to demonstrate its correctness before any programming language specific code is generated. This thesis investigates visual techniques for populating, manipulating, viewing, and composing these software application specifications within the formal object base scheme required …

So Far (Schematically) Yet So Near (Semantically), Amit P. Sheth, Vipul Kashyap Jan 1993

So Far (Schematically) Yet So Near (Semantically), Amit P. Sheth, Vipul Kashyap

Kno.e.sis Publications

In a multidatabase system, schematic conflicts between two objects are usually of interest only when the objects have some semantic affinity. In this paper we try to reconcile the two perspectives. We first define the concept of semantic proximity and provide a semantic taxonomy. We then enumerate and classify the schematic and data conflicts. We discuss possible semantic similarities between two objects that have various types of schematic and data conflicts. Issues of uncertain information and inconsistent information are also addressed.

Videoscheme: A Programmable Video Editing System For Automation And Media Recognition, James Matthews, Peter Gloor, Fillia Makedon Jan 1993

Videoscheme: A Programmable Video Editing System For Automation And Media Recognition, James Matthews, Peter Gloor, Fillia Makedon

Computer Science Technical Reports

The recent development of powerful, inexpensive hardware and software support had made digital video editing possible on personal computers and workstations. To date the video editing application category has been dominated by visual, easy-to-use, direct manipulation interfaces. These systems bring high-bandwidth human-computer interaction to a task formerly characterized by slow, inflexible, indirectly-operated machines. However, the direct manipulation computer interfaces are limited by their manual nature, and can not easily accommodate algorithmically- defined operations. This paper proposes a melding of the common direct manipulation interfaces with a programming language which we have enhanced to manipulate digital audio and video. The result …

A hypermedia database including selected flora and fauna in Kittitas County, Washington, was developed using HyperCard software for researching information about 400+ species. students had the opportunity to use the database in school libraries and in the author's fifth-grade classroom. The database cards accessed videodisc images where available. On the basis of limited study to date, it appears that when studying the environment, student learning was enhanced by the use of database material created by the author.

Real-Time Admission Control Algorithms With Delay And Loss Guarantees In Atm Networks, Apostolos Dailianas, Andreas D. Bovopoulos Jan 1993

Real-Time Admission Control Algorithms With Delay And Loss Guarantees In Atm Networks, Apostolos Dailianas, Andreas D. Bovopoulos

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

A multimedia ATM network is shared by media streams with different performance requirements. For media streams such as file transfers, the preservation of bursts and the provision of guarantees for loss probability at the burst level is of primary importance, while, for media streams such as voice, loss guarantees at the cell level are sufficient. Continuous media have stringent delay jitter requirements. Finally, some applications require loss-free transmission. In this paper, the first complete traffic management scheme for multimedia ATM networks is introduced. The traffic management scheme supports four different classes of traffic, each of which has different performance requirements …

Multimedia Object Modelling And Storage Allocation Strategies For Heterogeneous Parallel Access Storage Devices In Real Time Multimedia Computing Systems, C.Y. Roger Chen, Kingsley C. Nwosu, P. B. Berra Jan 1993

Multimedia Object Modelling And Storage Allocation Strategies For Heterogeneous Parallel Access Storage Devices In Real Time Multimedia Computing Systems, C.Y. Roger Chen, Kingsley C. Nwosu, P. B. Berra

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

The improvements in disk speeds have not kept up with improvements in processor and memory speeds. Conventional storage techniques, in the face of multimedia data, are inefficient and/or inadequate. Here, an efficient multimedia object allocation strategy is presented. We describe a multimedia object model, the object and storage device characteristics, and the fragmentation strategy. A bipartite graph approach is used for mapping fragments to storage devices and a cost function is used to determine an efficient allocation of an object and to balance the loads on the devices.

On Transactional Workflows, Amit P. Sheth, Marek Rusinkiewicz Jan 1993

On Transactional Workflows, Amit P. Sheth, Marek Rusinkiewicz

Kno.e.sis Publications

The basic transaction model has evolved over time to incorporate more complex transactions structures and to take the advantage of semantics of higher-level operations that cannot be seen at the level of page reads and writes. Well known examples of such extended transaction models include nested and multi-level transactions. A number of relaxed transaction models have been defined in the last several years that permit a controlled relaxation of the transaction isolation and atomicity to better match the requirements of various database applications. Correctness criteria other than global serializability have also been proposed. Several examples of extended/relaxed transaction models are …

The Extent Of Multimedia Computer Applications In The Business World, Mei Yee Lim Jan 1993

The Extent Of Multimedia Computer Applications In The Business World, Mei Yee Lim

Honors Theses

The world, or at least I, was all agog when touch screens arrived. My initial contact with touch screens was at a science exhibition in Menara MPPJ, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia in July 1987. That particular exhibit, which encouraged visitors to participate and to experiment with, was a graphic program. Visitors could use their fingers to select the drawing tool or the color they want (which is something like the tools on a MacDraw screen on a Macintosh) and use their fingers to move around the screen to draw anything they want. That added to my fascination with the world of …
