Knowledge Discovery In Biological Datasets Using A Hybrid Bayes Classifier/Evolutionary Algorithm, Michael L. Raymer, Leslie A. Kuhn, William F. Punch Nov 2001

Knowledge Discovery In Biological Datasets Using A Hybrid Bayes Classifier/Evolutionary Algorithm, Michael L. Raymer, Leslie A. Kuhn, William F. Punch

Kno.e.sis Publications

A key element of bioinformatics research is the extraction of meaningful information from large experimental data sets. Various approaches, including statistical and graph theoretical methods, data mining, and computational pattern recognition, have been applied to this task with varying degrees of success. We have previously shown that a genetic algorithm coupled with a k-nearest-neighbors classifier performs well in extracting information about protein-water binding from X-ray crystallographic protein structure data. Using a novel classifier based on the Bayes discriminant function, we present a hybrid algorithm that employs feature selection and extraction to isolate salient features from large biological data sets. The …

Profile Combinatorics For Fragment Selection In Comparative Protein Structure Modeling, Deacon Sweeney, Travis E. Doom, Michael L. Raymer Nov 2001

Profile Combinatorics For Fragment Selection In Comparative Protein Structure Modeling, Deacon Sweeney, Travis E. Doom, Michael L. Raymer

Kno.e.sis Publications

Sequencing of the human genome was a great stride towards modeling cellular complexes, massive systems whose key players are proteins and DNA. A major bottleneck limiting the modeling process is structure and function annotation for the new genes. Contemporary protein structure prediction algorithms represent the sequence of every protein of known structure with a profile to which the profile of a protein sequence of unknown structure is compared for recognition. We propose a novel approach to increase the scope and resolution of protein structure profiles. Our technique locates equivalent regions among the members of a structurally similar fold family, and …

Privacy Protection For Transactions Of Digital Goods, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng Nov 2001

Privacy Protection For Transactions Of Digital Goods, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper we study the problem of how to protect users’ privacy in web transactions of digital goods. In particular, we introduce a system which allows a user to disclose his/her identity information (such as user account or credit card number) to a web site in exchange for a digital item, but prevents the web site from learning which specific item the user intends to obtain. The problem concerned here is orthogonal to the problem of anonymous transactions [RSG98], [RR98] but commensurate with the general problem of PIR (private information retrieval) [CGK95]

Progressive Transmission Of Spatial Data Over The Www: Challenges, James Carswell Sep 2001

Progressive Transmission Of Spatial Data Over The Www: Challenges, James Carswell

Conference papers

Progressive transmission of raster images over the WWW has been successfully applied to provide users with coarser versions of the data before downloading a complete image. In the vector domain, progressive transmission remains a challenging topic. Increasing the level of detail of a vector dataset is a complex process that does not simply imply adding pixels to it. In this paper we present a survey of existing models for progressive transmission of spatial data and discuss open problems and challenges related to the progressive transmission of geographic maps in vector format. Finally, we propose a model based on a client-server …

Online Bayesian Tree-Structured Transformation Of Hmms With Optimal Model Selection For Speaker Adaptation, Shaojun Wang, Yunxin Zhao Sep 2001

Online Bayesian Tree-Structured Transformation Of Hmms With Optimal Model Selection For Speaker Adaptation, Shaojun Wang, Yunxin Zhao

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper presents a new recursive Bayesian learning approach for transformation parameter estimation in speaker adaptation. Our goal is to incrementally transform or adapt a set of hidden Markov model (HMM) parameters for a new speaker and gain large performance improvement from a small amount of adaptation data. By constructing a clustering tree of HMM Gaussian mixture components, the linear regression (LR) or affine transformation parameters for HMM Gaussian mixture components are dynamically searched. An online Bayesian learning technique is proposed for recursive maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation of LR and affine transformation parameters. This technique has the advantages of …

A Theoretical Study Of The Interactive Communication Process In Video Game Playing: A Symbolic Interactionist Approach, Nevsal Tiryakioglu Aug 2001

A Theoretical Study Of The Interactive Communication Process In Video Game Playing: A Symbolic Interactionist Approach, Nevsal Tiryakioglu

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Video games have become the most popular leisure activity among children and adolescents. The increasing popularity of video games has urged researchers to determine the effects of video game playing on youngsters. Given the fact that most popular video games are violent in nature, much of the research has primarily focused on the correlation between playing video games with violent content and aggressive behavior in children. Most researchers have relied on previous media violence research, assuming similarities between television viewing and video game playing. However, video games are interactive media allowing the player to participate in the game scenario, which …

Visual Iconic Object-Oriented Programming To Advance Computer Science Education And Novice Programming, Nancy Silva Martinez Aug 2001

Visual Iconic Object-Oriented Programming To Advance Computer Science Education And Novice Programming, Nancy Silva Martinez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Learning how to program a computer is difficult for most people. Computer programming is a cognitively challenging, time consuming, labor intensive, and frustrating endeavor. Years of formal study and training are required to learn a programming language's world of algorithms and data structures. Instructions are coded in advance before the computer demonstrates the desired behavior. Seeing all the programming steps and instruction code is complicated. There exists a tremendous gap between the representations the human brain uses when thinking about a problem and the representations used in programming a computer. Often people are much better at dealing with specific, concrete …

Semantic Operators And Fixed-Point Theory In Logic Programming, Anthony K. Seda, Pascal Hitzler Jul 2001

Semantic Operators And Fixed-Point Theory In Logic Programming, Anthony K. Seda, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We consider rather general operators mapping valuations to (sets of) valuations in the context of the semantics of logic programming languages. This notion generalizes several of the standard operators encountered in this subject and is inspired by earlier work of M.C. Fitting. The fixed points of such operators play a fundamental role in logic programming semantics by providing standard models of logic programs and also in determining the computability properties of these standard models. We discuss some of our recent work employing topological ideas, in conjunction with order theory, to establish methods by which one can find the fixed points …

Web Spoofing 2001, Yougu Yuan, Eileen Zishuang Ye, Sean Smith Dartmouth College Jul 2001

Web Spoofing 2001, Yougu Yuan, Eileen Zishuang Ye, Sean Smith Dartmouth College

Computer Science Technical Reports

The Web is currently the pre-eminent medium for electronic service delivery to remote users. As a consequence, authentication of servers is more important than ever. Even sophisticated users base their decision whether or not to trust a site on browser cues---such as location bar information, SSL icons, SSL warnings, certificate information, response time, etc. In their seminal work on web spoofing, Felten et al showed how a malicious server could forge some of these cues---but using approaches that are no longer reproducible. However, subsequent evolution of Web tools has not only patched security holes---it has also added new technology to …

Securing Web Servers Against Insider Attack, Shan Jiang, Sean Smith, Kazuhiro Minami Dartmouth College Jul 2001

Securing Web Servers Against Insider Attack, Shan Jiang, Sean Smith, Kazuhiro Minami Dartmouth College

Computer Science Technical Reports

Too often, ``security of Web transactions'' reduces to ``encryption of the channel''---and neglects to address what happens at the server on the other end. This oversight forces clients to trust the good intentions and competence of the server operator---but gives clients no basis for that trust. Furthermore, despite academic and industrial research in secure coprocessing, many in the computer science community still regard ``secure hardware'' as a synonym for ``cryptographic accelerator.' This oversight neglects the real potential of COTS secure coprocessing technology to establish trusted islands of computation in hostile environments---such as at web servers with risk of insider attack. …

Application-Centric Analysis Of Ip-Based Mobility Management Techniques, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Prathima Agrawal Jul 2001

Application-Centric Analysis Of Ip-Based Mobility Management Techniques, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Prathima Agrawal

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper considers three applications—VoIP, mobile Web access and mobile server-based data transfers—and evaluates the applicability of various IP-based mobility management mechanisms. We first survey the features and characteristics of various IP mobility protocols, such as MIPv4, MIPv6, MIP-RO, SIP, CIP, HAWAII, MIP-RR and IDMP, and then evaluate their utility on an application-specific basis. The diversity in the mobility-related requirements ensures that no single mobility solution is universally applicable. We recommend a hierarchical mobility architecture. The framework uses our Dynamic Mobility Agent (DMA) architecture for managing intra-domain mobility and multiple application-based binding protocols for supporting inter-domain mobility. Thus, we recommend …

Recent Advances In Content-Based Video Analysis, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong, Hong-Jiang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present major issues in video parsing, abstraction, retrieval and semantic analysis. We discuss the success, the difficulties and the expectations in these areas. In addition, we identify important opened problems that can lead to more sophisticated ways of video content analysis. For video parsing, we discuss topics in video partitioning, motion characterization and object segmentation. The success in video parsing, in general, will have a great impact on video representation and retrieval. We present three levels of abstracting video content by scene, keyframe and key object representations. These representation schemes in overall serve as a good …

With the rapid growth of broadband infrastructure, it is thought that the bottleneck for video-on-demand service through Internet is being cleared. However, digital video content protection and consumers privacy protection emerge as new major obstacles. In this paper we propose an online video distribution system with strong content security and privacy protection. We mainly focus on the study of security and privacy problems related to the system. Besides presenting the new system, we intensively discuss some relevant cryptographic issues, such as content protection, private information retrieval, super-speed encryption/decryption for video, and PKC with fast decryption etc. The paper can be …

Proceedings Of The 2001 Onr Decision-Support Workshop Series: Continuing The Revolution In Military Affairs, Collaborative Agent Design Research Center

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

In August of 1998 the Collaborative Agent Design Research Center (CADRC) of the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), approached the Office of Naval Research (ONR) with the proposal for an annual workshop focusing on emerging concepts in decision-support systems for military applications. The proposal was considered timely by the ONR Logistics Program Office for at least two reasons. First, rapid advances in information systems technology over the past decade had produced distributed, collaborative computer-assistance capabilities with profound potential for providing meaningful support to military decision makers. Indeed, some systems based on these new capabilities such …

Webalps Implementation And Performance Analysis: Using Trusted Co-Servers To Enhance Privacy And Security Of Web Interactions, Shan Jiang Jun 2001

Webalps Implementation And Performance Analysis: Using Trusted Co-Servers To Enhance Privacy And Security Of Web Interactions, Shan Jiang

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

The client-server model of the Web poses a fundamental trust issue: clients are forced to trust in secrecy and correctness of computation occurring at a remote server of unknown credibility. The current solution for this problem is to use a PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) system and SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) digital certificates to prove the claimed identity of a server and establish an authenticated, encrypted channel between the client and this server. However, this approach does not address the security risks posed by potential malicious server operators or any third parties who may penetrate the server sites. The WebALPS (Web …

Summarizing Data Sets For Classification, Christopher W. Kinzig, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Gary B. Lamont, Robert E. Marmelstein Jun 2001

Summarizing Data Sets For Classification, Christopher W. Kinzig, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Gary B. Lamont, Robert E. Marmelstein

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper describes our approach and experiences with implementing a data mining system using genetic algorithms in C++. In contrast with earlier classification algorithms that tended to “tile” the data sets using some pre-specified “shapes”, the proposed system is based on Marmelstein’s work on determining natural boundaries for class homogeneous regions. These boundaries are further refined to construct a compact set of simple data mining rules for classification.

A query optimization preprocessor is then proposed.

Infopipes—An Abstraction For Information Flow, Jie Huang, Andrew P. Black, Jonathan Walpole, Calton Pu Jun 2001

Infopipes—An Abstraction For Information Flow, Jie Huang, Andrew P. Black, Jonathan Walpole, Calton Pu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Building Object-Oriented Distributed Systems has been facilitated by Remote Message Sending (RMS) systems like Java RMI and implementations of CORBA. However, RMS systems are designed to support request/response interactions. Streaming applications, in contrast, are characterized by high-bandwidth, long-duration communication with stringent performance requirements. Examples of streaming applications include video-on-demand, teleconferencing, on-line education, and environmental observation. These applications transfer huge amounts of data and focus on distributed information flow rather than request/response.

To simplify the task of building distributed streaming applications, we propose a new abstraction for information flow—Infopipes. Using Infopipes, information flow becomes the heart of the system, not an …

Document processing is a critical element of office automation. TEXPROS (TEXt PROcessing System) is a knowledge-based system designed to manage personal documents. However, as the Internet and e-Business changed the way offices operate, there is a need to re-envision document processing, storage, retrieval, and sharing. In the current environment, people must be able to access documents remotely and to share those documents with others. e-DOCPROS (e-DOCument PROcessing System) is a new document processing system that takes advantage of many of TEXPROS's structures but adapts the system to this new environment. The new system is built to serve e-businesses, takes advantage …

Waqs : A Web-Based Approximate Query System, George Jyh-Shian Chang May 2001

Waqs : A Web-Based Approximate Query System, George Jyh-Shian Chang

Dissertations

The Web is often viewed as a gigantic database holding vast stores of information and provides ubiquitous accessibility to end-users. Since its inception, the Internet has experienced explosive growth both in the number of users and the amount of content available on it. However, searching for information on the Web has become increasingly difficult. Although query languages have long been part of database management systems, the standard query language being the Structural Query Language is not suitable for the Web content retrieval.

In this dissertation, a new technique for document retrieval on the Web is presented. This technique is designed …

Augmenting Applications With Hyper Media, Functionality And Meta-Information, Roberto Galnares May 2001

Augmenting Applications With Hyper Media, Functionality And Meta-Information, Roberto Galnares

Dissertations

The Dynamic Hypermedia Engine (DHE) enhances analytical applications by adding relationships, semantics and other metadata to the application's output and user interface. DHE also provides additional hypermedia navigational, structural and annotation functionality. These features allow application developers and users to add guided tours, personal links and sharable annotations, among other features, into applications. DHE runs as a middleware between the application user interface and its business logic and processes, in a n-tier architecture, supporting the extra functionalities without altering the original systems by means of application wrappers.

DHE automatically generates links at run-time for each of those elements having relationships …

Knowledge-Based Document Retrieval With Application To Texpros, Fang Sheng May 2001

Knowledge-Based Document Retrieval With Application To Texpros, Fang Sheng

Dissertations

Document retrieval in an information system is most often accomplished through keyword search. The common technique behind keyword search is indexing. The major drawback of such a search technique is its lack of effectiveness and accuracy. It is very common in a typical keyword search over the Internet to identify hundreds or even thousands of records as the potentially desired records. However, often few of them are relevant to users' interests.

This dissertation presents knowledge-based document retrieval architecture with application to TEXPROS. The architecture is based on a dual document model that consists of a document type hierarchy and, a …

Supporting Adaptive Ubiquitous Applications With The Solar System, Guanling Chen, David Kotz May 2001

Supporting Adaptive Ubiquitous Applications With The Solar System, Guanling Chen, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

As we embed more computers into our daily environment, ubiquitous computing promises to make them less noticeable and help to prevent information overload. We see, however, few ubiquitous applications that are able to adapt to the dynamics of user, physical, and computational context. We believe that there are two challenges causing this lack of ubiquitous applications: there is no flexible and scalable way to support information collection and dissemination in a ubiquitous and mobile environment, and there is no general approach to building adaptive applications given heterogeneous contextual information. We propose a system infrastructure, Solar, to meet these challenges. Solar …

Making Use Of The Most Expressive Jumping Emerging Patterns For Classification, Jinyan Li, Guozhu Dong, Kotagiri Ramamohanarao May 2001

Making Use Of The Most Expressive Jumping Emerging Patterns For Classification, Jinyan Li, Guozhu Dong, Kotagiri Ramamohanarao

Kno.e.sis Publications

Classification aims to discover a model from training data that can be used to predict the class of test instances. In this paper, we propose the use of jumping emerging patterns (JEPs) as the basis for a new classifier called the JEP-Classifier. Each JEP can capture some crucial difference between a pair of datasets. Then, aggregating all JEPs of large supports can produce a more potent classification power. Procedurally, the JEP-Classifier learns the pair-wise features (sets of JEPs) contained in the training data, and uses the collective impacts contributed by the most expressive pair-wise features to determine the class labels …

An All-To-All Multicast Routing Protocol In A Wireless Ad-Hoc Network To Improve Channel Utilization, Zhong Hua Zhou May 2001

An All-To-All Multicast Routing Protocol In A Wireless Ad-Hoc Network To Improve Channel Utilization, Zhong Hua Zhou

Theses and Dissertations

Wireless Ad-hoc network has become more and more popular. Several different multicasting schemes for this type of network have been developed. But most of them are targeting a situation where the total number of senders is much less than the total number of receivers. This thesis analyzes different wireless communication patterns in ad hoc network, the trend for wireless communication and presents a new multicast scheme. It targets an ad-hoc network where all mobile hosts act as both senders and receivers. The proposed scheme in this thesis will reduce overheads by combining data packets that are destined for the same …

A Data Layout Descriptor Language (Ladel)., Ashfaq Ahmed Jeelani May 2001

A Data Layout Descriptor Language (Ladel)., Ashfaq Ahmed Jeelani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To transfer data between devices and main memory, standard C block I/O interfaces use block buffers of type char. C++ programs that perform block I/O commonly use typecasting to move data between structures and block buffers. The subject of this thesis, the layout description language (LADEL), represents a high-level solution to the problem of block buffer management. LADEL provides operators that hide the casting ordinarily required to pack and to unpack buffers and guard against overflow of the virtual fields. LADEL also allows a programmer to dynamically define a structured view of a block buffer's contents. This view includes the …
