The Lawyer Of The Future: Ethics And Identity In The Age Of Ai, David Yosifon, Michael Santoro, Isaac Nikssarian Jan 2026

The Lawyer Of The Future: Ethics And Identity In The Age Of Ai, David Yosifon, Michael Santoro, Isaac Nikssarian

American University Law Review

The dawn of artificial intelligence (AI) poses a fundamental challenge to the legal profession’s practical function and social identity. We argue that this challenge should be met as an opportunity to reclaim the profession’s core ethical intentions. We approach the emergence of AI as an occasion to define and safeguard what is irreducibly human in legal work. We ground our approach in the ethical imperatives set out in the American Bar Association’s Model Rules of Professional Conduct, while extending them into an invigorated framework for the AI era.

We survey the uses and ethical challenges associated with cutting-edge deployment of …

Pixel-To-World Mapping For Multi-Camera Warehouse Robot Localization, Mariam Faruque Sharif Jan 2026

Pixel-To-World Mapping For Multi-Camera Warehouse Robot Localization, Mariam Faruque Sharif

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents a comprehensive framework for camera calibration and pixel-to-world coordinate mapping for multi-camera robot localization in a structured warehouse environment. The study is conducted in the APRN-ROWS laboratory, where four overhead cameras observe a planar grid of known barcode locations used as the reference coordinate system.

The proposed approach combines geometric modeling and optimization-based techniques to estimate camera parameters. Initially, camera extrinsic parameters, including position and orientation, are derived using physical measurements and geometric relationships. Principal point locations are estimated through a zoom-based alignment method, ensuring accurate correspondence between the optical axis and the world coordinate system. Intrinsic …

Patch-Moe Mamba: A Patch-Ordered Mixture-Of-Experts State Space Architecture For Medical Image Segmentation, Diego Adame, Fabian Vazquez Jr., Jose A. Nunez, Huimin Li, Jinghao Yang, Erik Enriquez, Dongchul Kim, Haoteng Tang, Bin Fu, Pengfei Gu Jan 2026

Patch-Moe Mamba: A Patch-Ordered Mixture-Of-Experts State Space Architecture For Medical Image Segmentation, Diego Adame, Fabian Vazquez Jr., Jose A. Nunez, Huimin Li, Jinghao Yang, Erik Enriquez, Dongchul Kim, Haoteng Tang, Bin Fu, Pengfei Gu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

CNN- and Transformer-based architectures have achieved strong performance in medical image segmentation, but CNNs are limited in modeling long-range dependencies, while Transformers often suffer from quadratic computational and memory complexity. State space models, especially Mamba-based networks, offer an efficient alternative with linear sequence complexity. However, existing Mamba segmentation models still face two limitations: pixel-wise directional scanning can disrupt local 2D spatial structure, and simple summation-based fusion of scan directions cannot adapt well to diverse object sizes, shapes, and boundaries. To address these issues, we propose Patch-MoE Mamba, a patch-ordered mixture-of-experts state space architecture for medical image segmentation. It introduces a …

Real-Time Isolated Asl Recognition: Evaluating Spatial-Temporal Networks And Multimodal Llms, Raga Mouni Batchu Jan 2026

Real-Time Isolated Asl Recognition: Evaluating Spatial-Temporal Networks And Multimodal Llms, Raga Mouni Batchu

West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects

This thesis investigates the deployment of high-accuracy Isolated ASL Recognition (ISLR) in resource-constrained edge environments. We train a lightweight Spatio-Temporal Attention Network (SSTAN,∼2.7 M parameters,∼10 MB) on the WLASL-100 benchmark, achieving 75.25% Top-1 and 88.24% Top-5 accuracy with 139 ms CPU-only inference. A systematic comparison against frontier multimodal LLMs (Gemini 3 Flash, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Qwen 3 VL) shows SSTAN outperforms the best LLM baseline by∼1.85×in accuracy while being 22–230×faster and up to 40×cheaper annually. The LLMs’ core limitation is a lack of fine-grained temporal perception; they impose English-language semantic priors rather than learning the articulatory distinctions that define ASL …

Efficient Dynamic And Momentum Aperture Optimization For Lattice Design Using Multipoint Bayesian Algorithm Execution, Z. Zhang, I. Agapov, S. Gasiorowski, T. Hellert, W. Neiswanger, X. Huang, D. Ratner Jan 2026

Efficient Dynamic And Momentum Aperture Optimization For Lattice Design Using Multipoint Bayesian Algorithm Execution, Z. Zhang, I. Agapov, S. Gasiorowski, T. Hellert, W. Neiswanger, X. Huang, D. Ratner

Physics Faculty Publications

We demonstrate that multipoint Bayesian algorithm execution (multipointBAX) can overcome fundamental computational challenges in storage ring design optimization. Dynamic aperture and momentum aperture optimization is a multipoint, multiobjective design task for storage rings, ultimately informing the flux of x-ray sources and luminosity of colliders. Current production black-box optimization methods require extensive particle-tracking simulations for each trial configuration; the high computational cost restricts the extent of the search to ~ 10³ configurations and therefore limits the quality of the final design. We remove this bottleneck using multipointBAX, which selects, simulates, and models each trial configuration at the single-particle level. We demonstrate …

When Helpfulness Becomes Harmful: Jailbreaking Llms For Malicious Code Generation, Noelle Capodieci Jan 2026

When Helpfulness Becomes Harmful: Jailbreaking Llms For Malicious Code Generation, Noelle Capodieci

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Generative AI (GenAI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) have made large strides in coding task capabilities, with many software developers integrating agentic engineering into their workflow. While GenAI has largely benefited professional software engineers who can automate their work, it has also created room for those with little coding expertise to also create fully fledged programs and applications. It is commonly noted that GenAI is trained with two major goals in mind: to be as helpful as possible, and be as harmless as possible. There exist moments where helpfulness may be prioritized over harmlessness when these goals conflict. LLMs may …

Psag: Projection-Based Stabilized Attribution Guidance For Online Continual Learning, Hang Yu, Kun Hu, Zhuqiang Lu, Steven Qiang Lu, Zhiyong Wang, Fengxiang He

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Online Continual Learning (OCL) aims to incrementally learn from non-stationary data streams in a one-pass setting, facing the dual challenges of catastrophic forgetting and insufficient training. These challenges intensify the stability-plasticity dilemma, where pre-serving old knowledge conflicts with acquiring new information. In this paper, we propose Projection-based Stabilized Attribution Guidance (PSAG), a modular framework that leverages gradient-based attributions as active guidance signals to selectively preserve task-relevant representations. Our framework consists of three complementary mechanisms: (1) Attribution-Guided Feature Modulation (AGFM) that anchors critical features in the representation space; (2) Importance-Aware Loss Reweighting (IALR) that prioritizes informative samples at the loss level; …

Sparse Gradient Training For Recommender Systems, Yunke Qu, Liang Qu, Tong Chen, Xiangyu Zhao, Jianxin Li, Hongzhi Yin Jan 2026

Sparse Gradient Training For Recommender Systems, Yunke Qu, Liang Qu, Tong Chen, Xiangyu Zhao, Jianxin Li, Hongzhi Yin

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Recommender systems are widely applied in numerous online platforms such as shopping and social media platforms. They typically utilize large embedding tables that map users and items to dense vectors of uniform sizes. As the number of users and items continues to grow, this design leads to significant memory consumption and computational inefficiencies. This challenge is particularly pronounced in scenarios such as federated learning, where model parameters are updated locally on edge devices with limited computational resources before being transmitted to a central server for aggregation. Numerous approaches have been proposed to address this issue, among which embedding pruning methods …

ℵ-Ipomdp: Mitigating Deception In A Cognitive Hierarchy With Off-Policy Counterfactual Anomaly Detection, Nitay Alon, Joseph M. Barnby, Stefan Sarkadi, Lion Schulz, Jeffrey S. Rosenschein, Peter Dayan

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Social agents with finitely nested opponent models are vulnerable to manipulation by agents with deeper recursive capabilities. This imbalance, rooted in logic and the theory of recursive modelling frameworks, cannot be solved directly. We propose a computational framework called ℵ-IPOMDP, which augments the Bayesian inference of model-based RL agents with an anomaly detection algorithm and an out-of-belief policy. Our mechanism allows agents to realize that they are being deceived, even if they cannot understand how, and to deter opponents via a credible threat. We test this framework in both a mixed-motive and a zero-sum game. Our results demonstrate the ℵ-mechanism’s …

Gaze Transition Entropy And Automation Trust In Multitasking Workspace, Yusuke Yamani, Austin Jackson, Tetsuya Sato, Feyishola Ashimi, Michael S. Politowicz, Eric T. Chancey, Makoto Itoh

Psychology Faculty Publications

Safe flight operation requires visual scanning across multiple displays in a cockpit, which collectively represent the state of the aircraft and supporting automation. Trust is a crucial factor that drives human-automation interaction, and recent work has suggested a relationship between an operator's visual attention and automation trust. One index that captures predictability of eye movements between different areas of interest is gaze transition entropy. The current work reanalyzed data from Sato et al., which examined eye movement patterns and trust in automation associated with the system monitoring task of the Multi-Attribute Task Battery. Results showed credible positive correlations between the …

Artificial Intelligence And Machine Learning In Smart Vaginal Formulation Development, Deborah A. Ogundemuren, Vivek Agrahari, Andrew P. Wong, Carolina Herrera, Margaret O. Ilomuanya, Gustavo F. Doncel

CONRAD Publications

Vaginal drug delivery in women's health remains underutilized and insufficiently studied, largely due to the complexity and dynamic nature of the vaginal microenvironment. Variations in vaginal pH, hormonal levels, and microbiota composition introduce significant biological variability, complicating formulation design and contributing to inconsistent therapeutic outcomes and poor patient adherence. Conventional vaginal formulations often fail to account for these individual differences, highlighting the need for more adaptive and predictive approaches. Emerging advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) offer promising strategies to address these challenges by enabling multi-parameter, data-driven formulation development that explicitly considers biological variability. Despite their transformative …

A Unified Framework For Evaluating Training Efficiency In Deep (Bayesian) Neural Networks: Metrics, Overtraining, Stopping Criteria, And Grokking Computer Science, Eduardo Cueto Mendoza Jan 2026

A Unified Framework For Evaluating Training Efficiency In Deep (Bayesian) Neural Networks: Metrics, Overtraining, Stopping Criteria, And Grokking Computer Science, Eduardo Cueto Mendoza

Doctoral

Measuring training efficiency for artificial neural networks is an open research problem, current literature reports several attempts to define measures or create reporting frameworks. Current methods lack generality as they require measurements of the hardware or software thus, comparing efficiency between different systems can be difficult. Similarly, current metrics or frameworks generally do not propose the use of the metrics to directly improve training efficiency. This thesis presents three main contributions: (1) a novel framework that quantifies the training efficiency of a neural architecture on a learning task as the average ratio of model accuracy to total energy consumption during …

Motivation System Evoked By High Performance Work System In Chinese Universities And Colleges - An Examination Of The Relationship Between Human Resource Practices, Basic Psychological Needs, And Job Performance, Juan Chen Jan 2026

Motivation System Evoked By High Performance Work System In Chinese Universities And Colleges - An Examination Of The Relationship Between Human Resource Practices, Basic Psychological Needs, And Job Performance, Juan Chen

Doctoral

High Performance Work Systems (HPWS) are strategic, integrated Human Resource Practices (HRPS) designed to enhance employee abilities, motivation, and opportunities for participation, driving sustained organisational performance. While early research emphasized commitment HRPS, recent studies recognise that control and commitment HRPS are complementary rather than mutually exclusive, with neither holding an absolute advantage. Their success depends on contextual factors such as country, industry, organisation, economic environment, and workforce. In Chinese higher education institutions, transitioning from a high-commitment “iron rice bowl” system to a more control-oriented HR model has created tensions between efficiency and academic freedom. Based on the resource-based view, social exchange …

Decentralized Linear Solvers: Communication Cost And Privacy, Nelson G. Brasil, Vinay A. Vaishampayan Jan 2026

Decentralized Linear Solvers: Communication Cost And Privacy, Nelson G. Brasil, Vinay A. Vaishampayan

Publications and Research

We consider the problem of multiple parties iteratively solving a system of linear equations in a decentralized manner. Specifically, we solve for $\negr{x} \in \R^n$, the $n \times n$ system of linear equations $M\negr{x} = \negr{b}$ when each party only knows their row of the matrix $M$ and a single component of $\negr{b} \in \R^n$. Our objective is to determine the tradeoff between the accuracy of the solution and the total communication cost measured in bits. A fully connected, reliable mesh network is assumed to connect the different parties. We develop a general formulation that applies to a large class …

Fleet: A Federated Learning Emulation And Evaluation Testbed For Holistic Research, Osama Abu Hamdan, Hao Che, Engin Arslan, Md Arifuzzaman

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Federated Learning (FL) presents a robust paradigm for privacy-preserving, decentralized machine learning. However, a significant gap persists between the theoretical design of FL algorithms and their practical performance, largely because existing evaluation tools often fail to model realistic operational conditions. Many testbeds oversimplify the critical dynamics among algorithmic efficiency, client-level heterogeneity, and continuously evolving network infrastructure. To address this challenge, we introduce the Federated Learning Emulation and Evaluation Testbed (FLEET). This comprehensive platform provides a scalable and configurable environment by integrating a versatile, framework-agnostic learning component with a high-fidelity network emulator. FLEET supports diverse machine learning frameworks, customizable real-world network …

Dcmm-Transformer: Degree-Corrected Mixed-Membership Attention For Medical Imaging, Huimin Cheng, Xiaowei Yu, Shushan Wu, Luyang Fang, Chao Cao, Jing Zhang, Tianming Liu, Dajiang Zhu, Wenxuan Zhong, Ping Ma

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Medical images exhibit latent anatomical groupings, such as organs, tissues, and pathological regions, that standard Vision Transformers (ViTs) fail to exploit. While recent work like SBM-Transformer attempts to incorporate such structures through stochastic binary masking, they suffer from non-differentiability, training instability, and the inability to model complex community structure. We present DCMM-Transformer, a novel ViT architecture for medical image analysis that incorporates a Degree-Corrected Mixed-Membership (DCMM) model as an additive bias in self-attention. Unlike prior approaches that rely on multiplicative masking and binary sampling, our method introduces community structure and degree heterogeneity in a fully differentiable and interpretable manner. Comprehensive …

Explaining The Unseen: Multimodal Vision-Language Reasoning For Situational Awareness In Underground Mining Disasters, Mizanur Rahman Jewel, Mohamed Elmahallawy, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Samuel Frimpong

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Underground mining disasters produce pervasive darkness, dust, and collapses that obscure vision and make situational awareness difficult for humans and conventional systems. To address this, we propose MDSE, Multimodal Disaster Situation Explainer, a novel vision-language framework that automatically generates detailed textual explanations of post-disaster underground scenes. MDSE has three-fold innovations: (i) Context-Aware Cross-Attention for robust alignment of visual and textual features even under severe degradation; (ii) Segmentation-aware dual pathway visual encoding that fuses global and region-specific embeddings; and (iii) Resource-Efficient Transformer-Based Language Model for expressive caption generation with minimal compute cost. To support this task, we present the Underground Mine …

Adaptive Multi-Grade Deep Learning For Highly Oscillatory Fredholm Integral Equations Of The Second Kind, Jie Jiang, Yuesheng Xu Jan 2026

Adaptive Multi-Grade Deep Learning For Highly Oscillatory Fredholm Integral Equations Of The Second Kind, Jie Jiang, Yuesheng Xu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

This paper studies the use of Multi-Grade Deep Learning (MGDL) for solving highly oscillatory Fredholm integral equations of the second kind. We provide rigorous error analyses of continuous and discrete MGDL models, showing that the discrete model retains the convergence and stability of its continuous counterpart under sufficiently small quadrature error. We identify the DNN training error as the primary source of approximation error, motivating a novel adaptive MGDL algorithm that selects the network grade based on training performance. Numerical experiments with highly oscillatory (including wavenumber 500) and singular solutions confirm the accuracy, effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach.

A New Parallel-In-Time Direct Inverse Method For Nonlinear Differential Equations, Nail K. Yamaleev, Subhash Paudel Jan 2026

A New Parallel-In-Time Direct Inverse Method For Nonlinear Differential Equations, Nail K. Yamaleev, Subhash Paudel

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

We propose a new method for parallelization of the first-order backward difference discretization (BDF1) of the first-order time derivative in nonlinear partial differential equations, such as conservation law equations. The time derivative term is discretized by using the method of lines based on the implicit BDF1 scheme, while the inviscid and viscous terms are approximated by conventional 2nd-order central discretizations of the 1st- and 2nd-order derivatives in each spatial direction. The global system of nonlinear discrete equations in the space-time domain is solved by the Newton method for all time levels simultaneously. For the BDF1 discretization, this all-at-once system at …

The Adaptive Solution Of High-Frequency Helmholtz Equations Via Multi-Grade Deep Learning, Peiyao Zhao, Rui Wang, Tingting Wu, Yuesheng Xu Jan 2026

The Adaptive Solution Of High-Frequency Helmholtz Equations Via Multi-Grade Deep Learning, Peiyao Zhao, Rui Wang, Tingting Wu, Yuesheng Xu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The Helmholtz equation is fundamental for modeling wave propagation in acoustics, electromagnetics, and geophysics; however, high-frequency regimes remain notoriously difficult due to the severe numerical “pollution effect.” We propose FD-MGDL, an adaptive framework that synergizes finite difference discretizations with Multi-Grade Deep Learning (MGDL) to efficiently resolve high-frequency wavefields. Unlike standard physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), which frequently suffer from spectral bias and heavy automatic differentiation overhead, FD-MGDL employs a progressive, grade-wise training strategy that incrementally incorporates shallow sub-networks to refine residual errors. By leveraging ReLU activations in refinement grades, the framework reformulates the highly non-convex global optimization problem into a sequence …

Mapping Multiclass-Targeted Hate Speech In Online Discourse: An Open Dataset, Sanaa Kaddoura, Sumaia Al-Kohlani

All Works

Online social networks have become central spaces for public discourse, where hostile and discriminatory language toward social groups can cause psychological and social consequences for marginalized communities. Although multiple public hate speech datasets are available, many rely on binary categorization practices that obscure linguistic, cultural, and contextual variation across targeted groups. As a result, minority and less visible forms of hate speech remain insufficiently documented and analyzed. This discussion paper examines methodological limitations in existing hate speech annotation schemes and presents a re-annotation framework applied to the HatEval2019 dataset. The proposed framework introduces target-specific multiclass labels that distinguish subcategories of …

Inside Out: Improving Large Model Safety, Wei Zhao

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

While Large Language Models (LLMs) and Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) are at the frontier of current advancements in artificial intelligence, demonstrating remarkable capabilities across diverse applications, there are growing concerns about their reliability and security. LLMs remain vulnerable to adversarial attacks through carefully crafted prompts that circumvent safety mechanisms, while MLLMs face additional security challenges stemming from their multimodal nature. Despite considerable efforts in reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) and supervised fine-tuning, existing safeguards have proven inadequate in addressing these critical vulnerabilities. This inadequacy stems from the fact that these models are inherently blackboxes that do not provide …

Sadqn-Based Residual Energy-Aware Beamforming For Lora-Enabled Rf Energy Harvesting For Disaster-Tolerant Underground Mining Networks, Hilary Kelechi Anabi, Samuel Frimpong, Sanjay Madria

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The end-to-end efficiency of radio-frequency (RF)-powered wireless communication networks (WPCNs) in post-disaster underground mine environments can be enhanced through adaptive beamforming. The primary challenges in such scenarios include (i) identifying the most energy-constrained nodes, i.e., nodes with the lowest residual energy to prevent the loss of tracking and localization functionality; (ii) avoiding reliance on the computationally intensive channel state information (CSI) acquisition process; and (iii) ensuring long-range RF wireless power transfer (LoRa-RFWPT). To address these issues, this paper introduces an adaptive and safety-aware deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework for energy beamforming in LoRa-enabled underground disaster networks. Specifically, we develop a …

Ocular Surface Disease Following Lasik And Cataract Surgery: A Review Of Their Interrelated Complications, Matthew D. Spangler, Nila Kirupaharan, John D. Sheppard

Department of Ophthalmology Faculty Publications

Background: Ocular surface disease is a multifactorial condition that is very commonly caused by dry eye disease (DED). Ophthalmic procedures intended to improve visual outcomes, laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and cataract surgery, can paradoxically cause or exacerbate underlying ocular surface disease. This results in worsening vision and quality of life.

Areas covered: This review examines the pathophysiological mechanisms contributing to ocular surface disease development following LASIK and cataract surgery. Both procedures are associated with the transection of corneal nerves, leading to decreased tear production, surface instability, altered neurotrophin production, and impairment of the blink reflex. Furthermore, these incisional procedures …
