Cc2vec: Distributed Representations Of Code Changes, Thong Hoang, Hong Jin Kang, Julia Lawall, David Lo Jun 2020

Cc2vec: Distributed Representations Of Code Changes, Thong Hoang, Hong Jin Kang, Julia Lawall, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing work on software patches often use features specific to a single task. These works often rely on manually identified features, and human effort is required to identify these features for each task. In this work, we propose CC2Vec, a neural network model that learns a representation of code changes guided by their accompanying log messages, which represent the semantic intent of the code changes. CC2Vec models the hierarchical structure of a code change with the help of the attention mechanism and usesmultiple comparison functions to identify the differences between the removed and added code. To evaluate if CC2Vec can …

Transfer Learning: Bridging The Gap Between Deep Learning And Domain-Specific Text Mining, Chaoran Cheng May 2020

Transfer Learning: Bridging The Gap Between Deep Learning And Domain-Specific Text Mining, Chaoran Cheng

Dissertations

Inspired by the success of deep learning techniques in Natural Language Processing (NLP), this dissertation tackles the domain-specific text mining problems for which the generic deep learning approaches would fail. More specifically, the domain-specific problems are: (1) success prediction in crowdfunding, (2) variants identification in biomedical literature, and (3) text data augmentation for domains with low-resources.

In the first part, transfer learning in a multimodal perspective is utilized to facilitate solving the project success prediction on the crowdfunding application. Even though the information in a project profile can be of different modalities such as text, images, and metadata, most existing …

An Investigation Into The Optimal Use Of Frequency-Based Weights To Improve The Performance Of Entity Resolution, Bingyi Zhong May 2020

An Investigation Into The Optimal Use Of Frequency-Based Weights To Improve The Performance Of Entity Resolution, Bingyi Zhong

Theses and Dissertations

Using a weight-based match score has been studied as a way to improve the accuracy of record linking (entity resolution) since Fellegi and Sunter first described the idea of probabilistic agreement and disagreement weights in their seminal work “A Theory of Record Linking.” However, the original work only described weight associated with an entity attribute. Later researchers such as Herzog et al suggested the weighting scheme could be extended to apply to frequently-occurring attribute values (frequency-based weights) instead of just the attribute as in the Fellegi-Sunter scheme. However, there has been little definitive research as to how frequency-based weights should …

The discussion of Computational Thinking as a pedagogical concept is now essential as it has found itself integrated into the core science disciplines with its inclusion in all of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS, 2018). The need for a practical and functional definition for teacher practitioners is a driving point for many recent research endeavors. Across the United States school systems are currently seeking new methods for expanding their students’ ability to analytically think and to employee real-world problem-solving strategies (Hopson, Simms, and Knezek, 2001). The need for STEM trained individuals crosses both the vocational certified and college degreed …

Detection And Analysis Of Malware Evolution, Sunhera Barunkumar Paul May 2020

Detection And Analysis Of Malware Evolution, Sunhera Barunkumar Paul

Master's Projects

Malware is a malicious software that causes disruption, allows access to unapproved resources, or performs other unauthorized activity. Developing effective malware detection techniques is a critical aspect of information security. One difficulty that arises is that malware often evolves over time, due to changing goals of malware developers, or to counter advances in detection. This evolution can occur through various modifications in malware code. To maintain effective malware detection, it is necessary to detect and analyze malware evolution so that appropriate countermeasures can be taken. We perform a variety of experiments to detect points in time where a malware family …

Comparison Of Word2vec With Hash2vec For Machine Translation, Neha Gaikwad May 2020

Comparison Of Word2vec With Hash2vec For Machine Translation, Neha Gaikwad

Master's Projects

Machine Translation is the study of computer translation of a text written in one human language into text in a different language. Within this field, a word embedding is a mapping from terms in a language into small dimensional vectors which can be processed using mathematical operations. Two traditional word embedding approaches are word2vec, which uses a Neural Network, and hash2vec, which is based on a simpler hashing algorithm. In this project, we have explored the relative suitability of each approach to sequence to sequence text translation using a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN). We also carried out experiments to test …

Graphical Representation Of Text Semantics, Karl Kevin Tiba Fossoh May 2020

Graphical Representation Of Text Semantics, Karl Kevin Tiba Fossoh

Master of Science in Computer Science Theses

A text is a set of words conveying a particular semantic based on their order, representation and structure. Those elements can be associated through a different set of interpretations, based on frequency and proportionality. The problem with context is that numbers do not help understand the semantics and fall short to convey the message of the text. The graphical representation of text semantics focuses on the conversion of text to images. Contrarily to word clouds that simply produce frequency mapping of words within the text and topic models that essentially give context to word frequencies and proportionalities, images keep intact …

Commonsense Explanations Of Sparsity, Zipf Law, And Nash's Bargaining Solution, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Kittawit Autchariyapanitkul

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

As econometric models become more and more accurate and more and more mathematically complex, they also become less and less intuitively clear and convincing. To make these models more convincing, it is desirable to supplement the corresponding mathematics with commonsense explanations. In this paper, we provide such explanation for three economics-related concepts: sparsity (as in LASSO), Zipf's Law, and Nash's bargaining solution.

Extractive Summarization And Simplification Of Scholarly Literature, Nilav Bharatkumar Vaghasiya May 2020

Extractive Summarization And Simplification Of Scholarly Literature, Nilav Bharatkumar Vaghasiya

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Research papers and journals have always played a crucial role in the field of research and development. However, these research papers usually have a complex usage of language which limits the range of target readers. The language and the terms used in these literary works can make the concept or the topic tough to understand for a naive reader. The goal of this project is to simplify a complex piece of literature into something meaningful without sounding verbose. The idea is based upon Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman’s learning technique known as the Feynman Technique that emphasizes the usage of …

The Two Types Of Society: Computationally Revealing Recurrent Social Formations And Their Evolutionary Trajectories, Lux Miranda May 2020

The Two Types Of Society: Computationally Revealing Recurrent Social Formations And Their Evolutionary Trajectories, Lux Miranda

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Comparative social science has a long history of attempts to classify societies and cultures in terms of shared characteristics. However, only recently has it become feasible to conduct quantitative analysis of large historical datasets to mathematically approach the study of social complexity and classify shared societal characteristics. Such methods have the potential to identify recurrent social formations in human societies and contribute to social evolutionary theory. However, in order to achieve this potential, repeated studies are needed to assess the robustness of results to changing methods and data sets. Using an improved derivative of the Seshat: Global History Databank, we …

Learning Discriminative Neural Sentiment Units For Semi-Supervised Target-Level Sentiment Classification, Jingjing Zhao, Yao Yang, Guansong Pang, Lei Lv, Hong Shang, Zhongqian Sun, Wei Yang May 2020

Learning Discriminative Neural Sentiment Units For Semi-Supervised Target-Level Sentiment Classification, Jingjing Zhao, Yao Yang, Guansong Pang, Lei Lv, Hong Shang, Zhongqian Sun, Wei Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Target-level sentiment classification aims at assigning sentiment polarities to opinion targets in a sentence, for which it is significantly more challenging to obtain large-scale labeled data than sentence/document-level sentiment classification due to the intricate contexts and relations of the target words. To address this challenge, we propose a novel semi-supervised approach to learn sentiment-aware representations from easily accessible unlabeled data specifically for the finegrained sentiment learning. This is very different from current popular semi-supervised solutions that use the unlabeled data via pretraining to generate generic representations for various types of downstream tasks. Particularly, we show for the first time that …

How We Refactor And How We Document It? On The Use Of Supervised Machine Learning Algorithms To Classify Refactoring Documentation, Eman Abdullah Alomar, Anthony Peruma, Mohamed Wiem Mkaouer, Christian D. Newman, Marouane Kessentini, Ali Ouni

Articles

Refactoring is the art of improving the structural design of a software system without altering its external behavior. Today, refactoring has become a well-established and disciplined software engineering practice that has attracted a significant amount of research presuming that refactoring is primarily motivated by the need to improve system structures. However, recent studies have shown that developers may incorporate refactoring strategies in other development-related activities that go beyond improving the design especially with the emerging challenges in contemporary software engineering. Unfortunately, these studies are limited to developer interviews and a reduced set of projects. To cope with the above-mentioned limitations, …

Posit: Simultaneously Tagging Natural And Programming Languages, Profir-Petru Pârțachi, Santanu Dash, Christoph Treude, Earl T. Barr

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software developers use a mix of source code and natural language text to communicate with each other: Stack Overflow and Developer mailing lists abound with this mixed text. Tagging this mixed text is essential for making progress on two seminal software engineering problems — traceability, and reuse via precise extraction of code snippets from mixed text. In this paper, we borrow code-switching techniques from Natural Language Processing and adapt them to apply to mixed text to solve two problems: language identification and token tagging. Our technique, POSIT, simultaneously provides abstract syntax tree tags for source code tokens, part-of-speech tags for …

Do You Feel Me?: Learning Language From Humans With Robot Emotional Displays, David Mcneill May 2020

Do You Feel Me?: Learning Language From Humans With Robot Emotional Displays, David Mcneill

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

In working towards accomplishing a human-level acquisition and understanding of language, a robot must meet two requirements: the ability to learn words from interactions with its physical environment, and the ability to learn language from people in settings for language use, such as spoken dialogue. The second requirement poses a problem: If a robot is capable of asking a human teacher well-formed questions, it will lead the teacher to provide responses that are too advanced for a robot, which requires simple inputs and feedback to build word-level comprehension.

In a live interactive study, we tested the hypothesis that emotional displays …

Practical Adversarial Attacks Against Black Box Speech Recognition Systems And Devices, Yuxuan Chen May 2020

Practical Adversarial Attacks Against Black Box Speech Recognition Systems And Devices, Yuxuan Chen

Theses and Dissertations

With the advance of speech recognition technologies, intelligent voice control devices such as Amazon Echo have became increasingly popular in our daily life. Currently, most state-of-the-art speech recognition systems are using neural networks to further improve the accuracy and efficacy of the system. Unfortunately, neural networks are vulnerable to adversarial examples: inputs specifically designed by an adversary to cause a neural network to misclassify them. Hence, it becomes imperative to understand the security implications of the speech recognition systems in the presence of such attacks. In this dissertation, we first introduce an effective audio adversarial attack towards one white box …

Non-Autoregressive Dialog State Tracking, Hung Le, Richard Socher, Steven C. H. Hoi May 2020

Non-Autoregressive Dialog State Tracking, Hung Le, Richard Socher, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent efforts in Dialogue State Tracking (DST) for task-oriented dialogues have progressed toward open-vocabulary or generation-based approaches where the models can generate slot value candidates from the dialogue history itself. These approaches have shown good performance gain, especially in complicated dialogue domains with dynamic slot values. However, they fall short in two aspects: (1) they do not allow models to explicitly learn signals across domains and slots to detect potential dependencies among (domain, slot) pairs; and (2) existing models follow auto-regressive approaches which incur high time cost when the dialogue evolves over multiple domains and multiple turns. In this paper, …

Characterization Of Written Text Using Data And Network Science, Harith A. Hamdon Hamoodat May 2020

Characterization Of Written Text Using Data And Network Science, Harith A. Hamdon Hamoodat

Theses and Dissertations

The success of humans cannot be attributed to language, but it is certainly true that language and humans are inseparable. Since the first language appeared, we have seen that language continually evolving over space and social gatherings to formed around 7,000 languages today. The origin and evolution of languages still vague, and state-of-the-art in languages evolution still lack a comprehensive characterization. In general, this problem is mainly tackled by statistical measuring the changes on the part of the language ( e.g., words and sounds). Given the current availability of data and computational power, this dissertation proposes a comprehensive data-driven characterization …

A Bio-Inspired Classification System For Cyber-Physical-Human Identity Resolution, Mary Catherine (Kay) Michel May 2020

A Bio-Inspired Classification System For Cyber-Physical-Human Identity Resolution, Mary Catherine (Kay) Michel

Theses and Dissertations

The Internet has created a need for understanding complex technology and identities today. Cybercrime can take years to solve, and a systematic design may aid in more rapid resolution. Classification of identities involves the arrangement of shared qualities or characteristics known as features set expression, useful for identifying specific types of cybercriminals based on empirical evidence and logic. In order for classification of a cyber identity to be explainable and acceptable to researchers, a holistic systematic approach is beneficial to organize natural and synthetic features of living and non-living organisms into a standardized model. Proven scientific methods in the biology …

Shakespeare In The Eighteenth Century: Algorithm For Quotation Identification, Marion Pauline Chiariglione May 2020

Shakespeare In The Eighteenth Century: Algorithm For Quotation Identification, Marion Pauline Chiariglione

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Quoting a borrowed excerpt of text within another literary work was infrequently done prior to the beginning of the eighteenth century. However, quoting other texts, particularly Shakespeare, became quite common after that. Our work develops automatic approaches to identify that trend. Initial work focuses on identifying exact and modified sections of texts taken from works of Shakespeare in novels spanning the eighteenth century. We then introduce a novel approach to identifying modified quotes by adapting the Edit Distance metric, which is character based, to a word based approach. This paper offers an introduction to previous uses of this metric within …
