Into The Unknown: Exploration Of Search Engines' Responses To Users With Depression And Anxiety, Ashlee Milton Aug 2021

Into The Unknown: Exploration Of Search Engines' Responses To Users With Depression And Anxiety, Ashlee Milton

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Mental health disorders (MHD) are a rising, yet stigmatized, topic. With statistics reporting that one in five adults in the United States will be afflicted by a MHD in their lifetime, researchers have begun exploring the behavioral nuances that emerge from interactions of these individuals with persuasive technologies, mainly social media. Yet, there is a gap in the analysis pertaining to a persuasive technology that is part of their everyday lives: search engines (SE). Each day, users with MHD embark on information seeking journeys using SE. Every step of the search process for better or worse has the potential to …

Estimating Homophily In Social Networks Using Dyadic Predictions, George Berry, Antonio Sirianni, Ingmar Weber, Jisun An, Michael Macy Aug 2021

Estimating Homophily In Social Networks Using Dyadic Predictions, George Berry, Antonio Sirianni, Ingmar Weber, Jisun An, Michael Macy

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Predictions of node categories are commonly used to estimate homophily and other relational properties in networks. However, little is known about the validity of using predictions for this task. We show that estimating homophily in a network is a problem of predicting categories of dyads (edges) in the graph. Homophily estimates are unbiased when predictions of dyad categories are unbiased. Node-level prediction models, such as the use of names to classify ethnicity or gender, do not generally produce unbiased predictions of dyad categories and therefore produce biased homophily estimates. Bias comes from three sources: sampling bias, correlation between model errors …

Learning-Based Extraction Of First-Order Logic Representations Of Api Directives, Mingwei Liu, Xin Peng, Andrian Marcus, Christoph Treude, Xuefang Bai, Gang Lyu, Jiazhen Xie, Xiaoxin Zhang Aug 2021

Learning-Based Extraction Of First-Order Logic Representations Of Api Directives, Mingwei Liu, Xin Peng, Andrian Marcus, Christoph Treude, Xuefang Bai, Gang Lyu, Jiazhen Xie, Xiaoxin Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Developers often rely on API documentation to learn API directives, i.e., constraints and guidelines related to API usage. Failing to follow API directives may cause defects or improper implementations. Since there are no industry-wide standards on how to document API directives, they take many forms and are often hard to understand by developers or challenging to parse with tools. In this paper, we propose a learning based approach for extracting first-order logic representations of API directives (FOL directives for short). The approach, called LeadFOL, uses a joint learning method to extract atomic formulas by identifying the predicates and arguments involved …

Towards Generative Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis, Wenxuan Zhang, Xin Li, Yang Deng, Lidong Bing, Wai Lam Aug 2021

Towards Generative Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis, Wenxuan Zhang, Xin Li, Yang Deng, Lidong Bing, Wai Lam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) has received increasing attention recently. Most existing work tackles ABSA in a discriminative manner, designing various task-specific classification networks for the prediction. Despite their effectiveness, these methods ignore the rich label semantics in ABSA problems and require extensive task-specific designs. In this paper, we propose to tackle various ABSA tasks in a unified generative framework. Two types of paradigms, namely annotation-style and extraction-style modeling, are designed to enable the training process by formulating each ABSA task as a text generation problem. We conduct experiments on four ABSA tasks across multiple benchmark datasets where our proposed generative …

Biasrv: Uncovering Biased Sentiment Predictions At Runtime, Zhou Yang, Muhammad Hilmi Asyrofi, David Lo Aug 2021

Biasrv: Uncovering Biased Sentiment Predictions At Runtime, Zhou Yang, Muhammad Hilmi Asyrofi, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sentiment analysis (SA) systems, though widely applied in many domains, have been demonstrated to produce biased results. Some research works have been done in automatically generating test cases to reveal unfairness in SA systems, but the community still lacks tools that can monitor and uncover biased predictions at runtime. This paper fills this gap by proposing BiasRV, the first tool to raise an alarm when a deployed SA system makes a biased prediction on a given input text. To implement this feature, BiasRV dynamically extracts a template from an input text and from the template generates gender-discriminatory mutants (semanticallyequivalent texts …

Modeling Real And Fake News Sharing In Social Networks, Abishai Joy Aug 2021

Modeling Real And Fake News Sharing In Social Networks, Abishai Joy

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Online media is changing the traditional news industry and diminishing the role of journalists, newspapers, and even news channels. This in turn is enhancing the ability of fake news to influence public opinion on important topics. The threat of fake news is quite imminent, as it allows malicious users to share their agenda with a larger audience. Major social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, etc., are making it easy to spread fake news due to the minimal moderation/ fact-checking on these platforms.

This work aims at predicting fake and real news sharing in social media. Specifically, we employ a multi-level …

Modeling And Analyzing Users' Privacy Disclosure Behavior To Generate Personalized Privacy Policies, A.K.M. Nuhil Mehdy Aug 2021

Modeling And Analyzing Users' Privacy Disclosure Behavior To Generate Personalized Privacy Policies, A.K.M. Nuhil Mehdy

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Privacy and its importance to society have been studied for centuries. While our understanding and continued theory building to hypothesize how users make privacy disclosure decisions has increased over time, the struggle to find a one-size solution that satisfies the requirements of each individual remains unsolved. Depending on culture, gender, age, and other situational factors, the concept of privacy and users' expectations of how their privacy should be protected varies from person to person. The goal of this dissertation is to design and develop tools and algorithms to support personal privacy management for end-users. The foundation of this research is …

Characterizing Search Activities On Stack Overflow, Jiakun Liu, Sebastian Baltes, Christoph Treude, David Lo, Yun Zhang, Xin Xia Aug 2021

Characterizing Search Activities On Stack Overflow, Jiakun Liu, Sebastian Baltes, Christoph Treude, David Lo, Yun Zhang, Xin Xia

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To solve programming issues, developers commonly search on Stack Overflow to seek potential solutions. However, there is a gap between the knowledge developers are interested in and the knowledge they are able to retrieve using search engines. To help developers efficiently retrieve relevant knowledge on Stack Overflow, prior studies proposed several techniques to reformulate queries and generate summarized answers. However, few studies performed a large-scale analysis using real-world search logs. In this paper, we characterize how developers search on Stack Overflow using such logs. By doing so, we identify the challenges developers face when searching on Stack Overflow and seek …

How Do You Visit: Identifying Addicts From Large-Scale Transit Records Via Scenario Deep Embedding, Canghong Jin, Dongkai Chen, Zhiwei Lin, Zemin Liu, Minghui Wu Aug 2021

How Do You Visit: Identifying Addicts From Large-Scale Transit Records Via Scenario Deep Embedding, Canghong Jin, Dongkai Chen, Zhiwei Lin, Zemin Liu, Minghui Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Identification of individuals based on transit modes is of great importance in user tracking systems. However, identifying users in real-life studies is not trivial owing to the following challenges: 1) activity data containing both temporal and spatial context are high-order and sparse; 2) traditional two-step classifiers depend on trajectory patterns as input features, which limits accuracy especially in the case of scattered and diverse data; 3) in some cases, there are few positive instances and they are difficult to detect. Therefore, approaches involving statistics-based or trajectory-based features do not work effectively. Deep learning methods also suffer from the problem of …

Cosy: Counterfactual Syntax For Cross-Lingual Understanding, Sicheng Yu, Hao Zhang, Yulei Niu, Qianru Sun, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Pre-trained multilingual language models, e.g., multilingual-BERT, are widely used in cross-lingual tasks, yielding the state-of-the-art performance. However, such models suffer from a large performance gap between source and target languages, especially in the zero-shot setting, where the models are fine-tuned only on English but tested on other languages for the same task. We tackle this issue by incorporating language-agnostic information, specifically, universal syntax such as dependency relations and POS tags, into language models, based on the observation that universal syntax is transferable across different languages. Our approach, named COunterfactual SYntax (COSY), includes the design of SYntax-aware networks as well as …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Stack Overflow is one of the most popular technical Q&A sites used by software developers. Seeking help from Stack Overflow has become an essential part of software developers' daily work for solving programming-related questions. Although the Stack Overflow community has provided quality assurance guidelines to help users write better questions, we observed that a significant number of questions submitted to Stack Overflow are of low quality. In this paper, we introduce a new web-based tool, Code2Que, which can help developers in writing higher quality questions for a given code snippet. Code2Que consists of two main stages: offline learning and online …

Are Missing Links Predictable? An Inferential Benchmark For Knowledge Graph Completion, Yixin Cao, Xiang Ji, Xin Lv, Juanzi Li, Yonggang Wen, Hanwang Zhang Aug 2021

Are Missing Links Predictable? An Inferential Benchmark For Knowledge Graph Completion, Yixin Cao, Xiang Ji, Xin Lv, Juanzi Li, Yonggang Wen, Hanwang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present InferWiki, a Knowledge Graph Completion (KGC) dataset that improves upon existing benchmarks in inferential ability, assumptions, and patterns. First, each testing sample is predictable with supportive data in the training set. To ensure it, we propose to utilize rule-guided train/test generation, instead of conventional random split. Second, InferWiki initiates the evaluation following the open-world assumption and improves the inferential difficulty of the closed-world assumption, by providing manually annotated negative and unknown triples. Third, we include various inference patterns (e.g., reasoning path length and types) for comprehensive evaluation. In experiments, we curate two settings of InferWiki varying in sizes …

Learning From Miscellaneous Other-Class Words For Few-Shot Named Entity Recognition, Meihan Tong, Shuai Wang, Bin Xu, Yixin Cao, Minghui Liu, Lei Hou, Juanzi Li Aug 2021

Learning From Miscellaneous Other-Class Words For Few-Shot Named Entity Recognition, Meihan Tong, Shuai Wang, Bin Xu, Yixin Cao, Minghui Liu, Lei Hou, Juanzi Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Few-shot Named Entity Recognition (NER) exploits only a handful of annotations to identify and classify named entity mentions. Prototypical network shows superior performance on few-shot NER. However, existing prototypical methods fail to differentiate rich semantics in other-class words, which will aggravate overfitting under few shot scenario. To address the issue, we propose a novel model, Mining Undefined Classes from Other-class (MUCO), that can automatically induce different undefined classes from the other class to improve few-shot NER. With these extra-labeled undefined classes, our method will improve the discriminative ability of NER classifier and enhance the understanding of predefined classes with stand-by …

How Knowledge Graph And Attention Help? A Qualitative Analysis Into Bag-Level Relation Extraction, Zikun Hu, Yixin Cao, Lifu Huang, Tat-Seng Chua Aug 2021

How Knowledge Graph And Attention Help? A Qualitative Analysis Into Bag-Level Relation Extraction, Zikun Hu, Yixin Cao, Lifu Huang, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Knowledge Graph (KG) and attention mechanism have been demonstrated effective in introducing and selecting useful information for weakly supervised methods. However, only qualitative analysis and ablation study are provided as evidence. In this paper, we contribute a dataset and propose a paradigm to quantitatively evaluate the effect of attention and KG on bag-level relation extraction (RE). We find that (1) higher attention accuracy may lead to worse performance as it may harm the model’s ability to extract entity mention features; (2) the performance of attention is largely influenced by various noise distribution patterns, which is closely related to real-world datasets; …

Master of Science in Computer Science Theses

Big data analytics is gaining popularity for enterprises in optimizing their business processes ranging from retailers, supply chains, to online shopping stores. Existing practical raw data are far from usable to achieve the goal. Therefore, a good data pre-processing approach is required and is a key step to success. We propose to research on the effectiveness of data pre-processing and the business process based on a real world database. Our methodology involves natural language processing. Our key goal is to study appropriate methods with big data analysis techniques that can handle errors, ambiguity, and repeated descriptions caused by human languages. …

Entity Retrieval Using Fine-Grained Entity Aspects, Shubham Chatterjee, Laura Dietz Jul 2021

Entity Retrieval Using Fine-Grained Entity Aspects, Shubham Chatterjee, Laura Dietz

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Using entity aspect links, we improve upon the current state-of-the-art in entity retrieval. Entity retrieval is the task of retrieving relevant entities for search queries, such as "Antibiotic Use in Livestock". Entity aspect linking is a new technique to refine the semantic information of entity links. For example, while passages relevant to the query above may mention the entity "USA", there are many aspects of the USA of which only few, such as "USA/Agriculture", are relevant for this query. By using entity aspect links that indicate which aspect of an entity is being referred to in the context of the …

Frameaxis: Characterizing Microframe Bias And Intensity With Word Embedding, Haewoon Kwak, Jisun An, Elise Jing Jing, Yong-Yeol Ahn

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Framing is a process of emphasizing a certain aspect of an issue over the others, nudging readers or listeners towards different positions on the issue even without making a biased argument. Here, we propose FrameAxis, a method for characterizing documents by identifying the most relevant semantic axes (“microframes”) that are overrepresented in the text using word embedding. Our unsupervised approach can be readily applied to large datasets because it does not require manual annotations. It can also provide nuanced insights by considering a rich set of semantic axes. FrameAxis is designed to quantitatively tease out two important dimensions of how …

Hierarchical Mapping For Crosslingual Word Embedding Alignment, Ion Madrazo Azpiazu, Maria Soledad Pera Jul 2021

Hierarchical Mapping For Crosslingual Word Embedding Alignment, Ion Madrazo Azpiazu, Maria Soledad Pera

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The alignment of word embedding spaces in different languages into a common crosslingual space has recently been in vogue. Strategies that do so compute pairwise alignments and then map multiple languages to a single pivot language (most often English). These strategies, however, are biased towards the choice of the pivot language, given that language proximity and the linguistic characteristics of the target language can strongly impact the resultant crosslingual space in detriment of topologically distant languages. We present a strategy that eliminates the need for a pivot language by learning the mappings across languages in a hierarchicalway. Experiments demonstrate that …

Dehumor: Visual Analytics For Decomposing Humor, Xingbo Wang, Yao Ming, Tongshuang Wu, Haipeng Zeng, Yong Wang, Huamin Qu Jul 2021

Dehumor: Visual Analytics For Decomposing Humor, Xingbo Wang, Yao Ming, Tongshuang Wu, Haipeng Zeng, Yong Wang, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite being a critical communication skill, grasping humor is challenginga successful use of humor requires a mixture of both engaging content build-up and an appropriate vocal delivery (e.g., pause). Prior studies on computational humor emphasize the textual and audio features immediately next to the punchline, yet overlooking longer-term context setup. Moreover, the theories are usually too abstract for understanding each concrete humor snippet. To fill in the gap, we develop DeHumor, a visual analytical system for analyzing humorous behaviors in public speaking. To intuitively reveal the building blocks of each concrete example, DeHumor decomposes each humorous video into multimodal features …

Rnnrepair: Automatic Rnn Repair Via Model-Based Analysis, Xiaofei Xie, Wenbo Guo, Lei Ma, Wei Le, Jian Wang, Lingjun Zhou, Yang Liu, Xinyu Xing

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Deep neural networks are vulnerable to adversarial attacks. Due to their black-box nature, it is rather challenging to interpret and properly repair these incorrect behaviors. This paper focuses on interpreting and repairing the incorrect behaviors of Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs). We propose a lightweight model-based approach (RNNRepair) to help understand and repair incorrect behaviors of an RNN. Specifically, we build an influence model to characterize the stateful and statistical behaviors of an RNN over all the training data and to perform the influence analysis for the errors. Compared with the existing techniques on influence function, our method can efficiently estimate …

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Pedagogy using gamification has recently received much attention as a way of enhancing student learning and retention. Additionally, academic institutions are making extensive use of online resources to expand teaching beyond the traditional classroom setting. Both academic institutions and companies utilize virtual teams to accomplish remote teamwork, particularly in a post-COVID environment. Despite the growing interest in incorporating gamification into teaching for business school courses, prior researchers have paid little attention to team-based gamification in the online learning environment. The purpose of this study is to examine if team members' perceived team cohesion influences their perceptions of flow. Also, we …

Unified Conversational Recommendation Policy Learning Via Graph-Based Reinforcement Learning, Yang Deng, Yaliang Li, Fei Sun, Bolin Ding, Wai Lam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Conversational recommender systems (CRS) enable the traditional recommender systems to explicitly acquire user preferences towards items and attributes through interactive conversations. Reinforcement learning (RL) is widely adopted to learn conversational recommendation policies to decide what attributes to ask, which items to recommend, and when to ask or recommend, at each conversation turn. However, existing methods mainly target at solving one or two of these three decision-making problems in CRS with separated conversation and recommendation components, which restrict the scalability and generality of CRS and fall short of preserving a stable training procedure. In the light of these challenges, we propose …

An Automated Method To Enrich And Expand Consumer Health Vocabularies Using Glove Word Embeddings, Mohammed Ibrahim Jul 2021

An Automated Method To Enrich And Expand Consumer Health Vocabularies Using Glove Word Embeddings, Mohammed Ibrahim

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Clear language makes communication easier between any two parties. However, a layman may have difficulty communicating with a professional due to not understanding the specialized terms common to the domain. In healthcare, it is rare to find a layman knowledgeable in medical jargon, which can lead to poor understanding of their condition and/or treatment. To bridge this gap, several professional vocabularies and ontologies have been created to map laymen medical terms to professional medical terms and vice versa. Many of the presented vocabularies are built manually or semi-automatically requiring large investments of time and human effort and consequently the slow …

Self-Supervised Contrastive Learning For Code Retrieval And Summarization Via Semantic-Preserving Transformations, Duy Quoc Nghi Bui, Yijun Yu, Lingxiao Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose Corder, a self-supervised contrastive learning framework for source code model. Corder is designed to alleviate the need of labeled data for code retrieval and code summarization tasks. The pre-trained model of Corder can be used in two ways: (1) it can produce vector representation of code which can be applied to code retrieval tasks that do not have labeled data; (2) it can be used in a fine-tuning process for tasks that might still require label data such as code summarization. The key innovation is that we train the source code model by asking it to recognize similar …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Entity alignment (EA) is a prerequisite for enlarging the coverage of a unified knowledge graph. Previous EA approaches either restrain the performance due to inadequate information utilization or need labor-intensive pre-processing to get external or reliable information to perform the EA task. This paper proposes EASY, an effective end-to-end EA framework, which is able to (i) remove the labor-intensive pre-processing by fully discovering the name information provided by the entities themselves; and (ii) jointly fuse the features captured by the names of entities and the structural information of the graph to improve the EA results. Specifically, EASY first introduces NEAP, …
