Events are fundamental building blocks of realworld happenings. In this paper, we present a large-scale, multi-modal event knowledge graph named MMEKG. MMEKG unifies different modalities of knowledge via events, which complement and disambiguate each other. Specifically, MMEKG incorporates (i) over 990 thousand concept events with 644 relation types to cover most types of happenings, and (ii) over 863 million instance events connected through 934 million relations, which provide rich contextual information in texts and/or images. To collect billion-scale instance events and relations among them, we additionally develop an efficient yet effective pipeline for textual/visual knowledge extraction system. We also develop …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we propose an effective yet efficient model PAIE for both sentence-level and document-level Event Argument Extraction (EAE), which also generalizes well when there is a lack of training data. On the one hand, PAIE utilizes prompt tuning for extractive objectives to take the best advantages of Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs). It introduces two span selectors based on the prompt to select start/end tokens among input texts for each role. On the other hand, it captures argument interactions via multi-role prompts and conducts joint optimization with optimal span assignments via a bipartite matching loss. Also, with a flexible …
Translate-Train Embracing Translationese Artifacts, Sicheng Yu, Qianru Sun, Hao Zhang, Jing Jiang
Translate-Train Embracing Translationese Artifacts, Sicheng Yu, Qianru Sun, Hao Zhang, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Translate-train is a general training approach to multilingual tasks. The key idea is to use the translator of the target language to generate training data to mitigate the gap between the source and target languages. However, its performance is often hampered by the artifacts in the translated texts (translationese). We discover that such artifacts have common patterns in different languages and can be modeled by deep learning, and subsequently propose an approach to conduct translate-train using Translationese Embracing the effect of Artifacts (TEA). TEA learns to mitigate such effect on the training data of a source language (whose original and …

Conversational systems have recently attracted significant attention. Both the research community and industry believe that it will exert huge impact on human-computer interaction, and specifically, the IR/RecSys community has begun to explore Conversational Recommendation. In real-life scenarios, such systems are often urgently needed in helping users accomplishing different tasks under various situations. However, existing works still face several shortcomings: (1) Most efforts are largely confined in single task setting. They fall short of hands in handling tasks across domains. (2) Aside from soliciting user preference from dialogue history, a conversational recommender naturally has access to the back-end data structure which …

Arseek: Identifying Api Resource Using Code And Discussion On Stack Overflow, Gia Kien Luong, Mohammad Hadi, Thung Ferdian, Fatemeh H. Fard, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
It is not a trivial problem to collect API-relevant examples, usages, and mentions on venues such as Stack Overflow. It requires efforts to correctly recognize whether the discussion refers to the API method that developers/tools are searching for. The content of the Stack Overflow thread, which consists of both text paragraphs describing the involvement of the API method in the discussion and the code snippets containing the API invocation, may refer to the given API method. Leveraging this observation, we develop ARSeek, a context-specific algorithm to capture the semantic and syntactic information of the paragraphs and code snippets in a …

Many recent models in software engineering introduced deep neural models based on the Transformer architecture or use transformerbased Pre-trained Language Models (PLM) trained on code. Although these models achieve the state of the arts results in many downstream tasks such as code summarization and bug detection, they are based on Transformer and PLM, which are mainly studied in the Natural Language Processing (NLP) field. The current studies rely on the reasoning and practices from NLP for these models in code, despite the differences between natural languages and programming languages. There is also limited literature on explaining how code is modeled. …

Guided Attention Multimodal Multitask Financial Forecasting With Inter-Company Relationships And Global And Local News, Meng Kiat Gary Ang, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Most works on financial forecasting use information directly associated with individual companies (e.g., stock prices, news on the company) to predict stock returns for trading. We refer to such company-specific information as local information. Stock returns may also be influenced by global information (e.g., news on the economy in general), and inter-company relationships. Capturing such diverse information is challenging due to the low signal-to-noise ratios, different time-scales, sparsity and distributions of global and local information from different modalities. In this paper, we propose a model that captures both global and local multimodal information for investment and risk management-related forecasting tasks. …
Characterization And Mitigation Of False Information On The Web, Anu Shrestha
Characterization And Mitigation Of False Information On The Web, Anu Shrestha
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Social media and Web sources have made information available, accessible, and shareable any time and anywhere nearly without friction. This information can be truthful, falsified, or can only be the opinion of the writer as users in such platforms are both information creators and consumers. In any case, it has the power to affect the decision of an individual, the beliefs of the society, activities, and the economy of the whole country. Thus, it is imperative to identify false information and mitigate the effects of false information that are ubiquitous across the Web and social media. Therefore, the main goal …

Lawsandtheirinterpretations, legal arguments and agreements are typically expressed in writing, leading to the production of vast corpora of legal text. Their analysis, which is at the center of legal practice, becomes increasingly elaborate as these collections grow in size. Natural language understanding (NLU) technologies can be a valuable tool to support legal practitioners in these endeavors. Their usefulness, however, largely depends on whether current state-of-the-art models can generalize across various tasks in the legal domain. To answer this currently open question, we introduce the Legal General Language Understanding Evaluation (LexGLUE) benchmark, a collection of datasets for evaluating model performance across …
Chinese Idiom Understanding With Transformer-Based Pretrained Language Models, Minghuan Tan
Chinese Idiom Understanding With Transformer-Based Pretrained Language Models, Minghuan Tan
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
In this dissertation, I study the understanding of Chinese idioms using transformer-based pretrained language models. By ``understanding", I confine the topics to word embeddings learning, contextualized word representations learning, multiple-choice cloze-test reading comprehension and conditional text generation. Chinese idioms are fixed phrases that have special meanings usually derived from an ancient story. The meanings of these idioms are oftentimes not directly related to their component characters, which makes it hard to model them compared with standard phrases whose meanings are compositional. We initiate the work with studying idiom representations derived from pretrained language models, in particular, BERT. We adopt probing-based …

While GPT has become the de-facto method for text generation tasks, its application to pinyin input method remains unexplored. In this work, we make the first exploration to leverage Chinese GPT for pinyin input method. We find that a frozen GPT achieves state-of-the-art performance on perfect pinyin. However, the performance drops dramatically when the input includes abbreviated pinyin. A reason is that an abbreviated pinyin can be mapped to many perfect pinyin, which links to even larger number of Chinese characters. We mitigate this issue with two strategies, including enriching the context with pinyin and optimizing the training process to …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the development of social media, various rumors can be easily spread on the Internet and such rumors can have serious negative effects on society. Thus, it has become a critical task for social media platforms to deal with suspected rumors. However, due to the lack of effective tools, it is often difficult for platform administrators to analyze and validate rumors from a large volume of information on a social media platform efficiently. We have worked closely with social media platform administrators for four months to summarize their requirements of identifying and analyzing rumors, and further proposed an interactive visual …

Stack Overflow is often viewed as one of the most influential Software Question & Answer (SQA) websites, containing millions of programming-related questions and answers. Tags play a critical role in efficiently structuring the contents in Stack Overflow and are vital to support a range of site operations, e.g., querying relevant contents. Poorly selected tags often introduce extra noise and redundancy, which raises problems like tag synonym and tag explosion. Thus, an automated tag recommendation technique that can accurately recommend high-quality tags is desired to alleviate the problems mentioned above.

The majority of online video content remains inaccessible for blind people due to the lack of audio descriptions. Content creators have traditionally relied on professionals to author audio descriptions, but their service is costly and not readily available. In this research, I introduce four threads of research that I will conduct for my Ph.D. dissertation, aimed to create methods and tools that are both time- and cost-effective in providing good quality audio descriptions. They are: (i) The development and evaluation of mixed-ability collaboration authoring tool, (ii) The formative study to uncover the feedback pattern from the reviewer, (iii) the evaluation …

In recent years, pre-trained language models (PLMs) have been shown to capture factual knowledge from massive texts, which encourages the proposal of PLM-based knowledge graph completion (KGC) models. However, these models are still quite behind the SOTA KGC models in terms of performance. In this work, we find two main reasons for the weak performance: (1) Inaccurate evaluation setting. The evaluation setting under the closed-world assumption (CWA) may underestimate the PLM-based KGC models since they introduce more external knowledge; (2) Inappropriate utilization of PLMs. Most PLM-based KGC models simply splice the labels of entities and relations as inputs, leading to …

On The Transferability Of Pre-Trained Language Models For Low-Resource Programming Languages, Fuxiang Chen, Fatemeh H. Fard, David Lo, Timofey Bryksin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A recent study by Ahmed and Devanbu reported that using a corpus of code written in multilingual datasets to fine-tune multilingual Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs) achieves higher performance as opposed to using a corpus of code written in just one programming language. However, no analysis was made with respect to fine-tuning monolingual PLMs. Furthermore, some programming languages are inherently different and code written in one language usually cannot be interchanged with the others, i.e., Ruby and Java code possess very different structure. To better understand how monolingual and multilingual PLMs affect different programming languages, we investigate 1) the performance of …

Cross-Temporal Snapshot Alignment For Dynamic Multi-Relational Networks, Lvjia Chen, Shangsong Liang
Cross-Temporal Snapshot Alignment For Dynamic Multi-Relational Networks, Lvjia Chen, Shangsong Liang
Machine Learning Faculty Publications
A dynamic network is often represented as a sequence of snapshots evolving over time. In certain real-world scenarios, the identities of nodes in snapshots of a dynamic network are unknown and need to be figured out. To deal with such a challenge, recently, the task of cross-temporal snapshot alignment for dynamic networks is proposed, which aims to match equivalent nodes across temporal snapshots of a dynamic network given a small set of identified nodes. However, in many dynamic multi-relational networks like temporal knowledge graphs, the relation type information of edges, which can be useful for the alignment task, is neglected …

Accuracy of English-language Question Answering (QA) systems has improved significantly in recent years with the advent of Transformer-based models (e.g., BERT). These models are pre-trained in a self-supervised fashion with a large English text corpus and further fine-tuned with a massive English QA dataset (e.g., SQuAD). However, QA datasets on such a scale are not available for most of the other languages. Multi-lingual BERT-based models (mBERT) are often used to transfer knowledge from high-resource languages to low-resource languages. Since these models are pre-trained with huge text corpora containing multiple languages, they typically learn language-agnostic embeddings for tokens from different languages. …

Improving Negation Detection With Negation-Focused Pre-Training, Hung Thinh Truong, Timothy Baldwin, Trevor Cohn, Karin Verspoor
Natural Language Processing Faculty Publications
Negation is a common linguistic feature that is crucial in many language understanding tasks, yet it remains a hard problem due to diversity in its expression in different types of text. Recent work has shown that state-of-the-art NLP models underperform on samples containing negation in various tasks, and that negation detection models do not transfer well across domains. We propose a new negation-focused pre-training strategy, involving targeted data augmentation and negation masking, to better incorporate negation information into language models. Extensive experiments on common benchmarks show that our proposed approach improves negation detection performance and generalizability over the strong baseline …

Considering The Context To Build Theory In Hci, Hri, And Hmc: Explicating Differences In Processes Of Communication And Socialization With Social Technologies, Andrew Gambino, Bingjie Liu
Human-Machine Communication
The proliferation and integration of social technologies has occurred quickly, and the specific technologies with which we engage are ever-changing. The dynamic nature of the development and use of social technologies is often acknowledged by researchers as a limitation. In this manuscript, however, we present a discussion on the implications of our modern technological context by focusing on processes of socialization and communication that are fundamentally different from their interpersonal corollary. These are presented and discussed with the goal of providing theoretical building blocks toward a more robust understanding of phenomena of human-computer interaction, human-robot interaction, human-machine communication, and interpersonal …

Toward Suicidal Ideation Detection With Lexical Network Features And Machine Learning, Ulya Bayram, William Lee, Daniel Santel, Ali Minai, Peggy Clark, Tracy Glauser, John Pestian
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
In this study, we introduce a new network feature for detecting suicidal ideation from clinical texts and conduct various additional experiments to enrich the state of knowledge. We evaluate statistical features with and without stopwords, use lexical networks for feature extraction and classification, and compare the results with standard machine learning methods using a logistic classifier, a neural network, and a deep learning method. We utilize three text collections. The first two contain transcriptions of interviews conducted by experts with suicidal (n=161 patients that experienced severe ideation) and control subjects (n=153). The third collection consists of interviews conducted by experts …

Few-Shot Object Detection Via Baby Learning, Anh-Khoa Nguyen Vu, Nhat-Duy Nguyen, Khanh-Duy Nguyen, Vinh-Tiep Nguyen, Thanh Duc Ngo, Thanh-Toan Do, Tam Nguyen
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Few-shot learning is proposed to overcome the problem of scarce training data in novel classes. Recently, few-shot learning has been well adopted in various computer vision tasks such as object recognition and object detection. However, the state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods have less attention to effectively reuse the information from previous stages. In this paper, we propose a new framework of few-shot learning for object detection. In particular, we adopt Baby Learning mechanism along with the multiple receptive fields to effectively utilize the former knowledge in novel domain. The propoed framework imitates the learning process of a baby through visual cues. The …

On Explaining Multimodal Hateful Meme Detection Models, Ming Shan Hee, Roy Ka-Wei Lee, Wen Haw Chong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Hateful meme detection is a new multimodal task that has gained significant traction in academic and industry research communities. Recently, researchers have applied pre-trained visual-linguistic models to perform the multimodal classification task, and some of these solutions have yielded promising results. However, what these visual-linguistic models learn for the hateful meme classification task remains unclear. For instance, it is unclear if these models are able to capture the derogatory or slurs references in multimodality (i.e., image and text) of the hateful memes. To fill this research gap, this paper propose three research questions to improve our understanding of these visual-linguistic …

We design and evaluate VICTOR, an easy-to-apply module on top of a recommender system to mitigate misinformation. VICTOR takes an elegant, implicit approach to deliver fake-news verifications, such that readers of fake news can continuously access more verified news articles about fake-news events without explicit correction. We frame fake-news intervention within VICTOR as a graph-based question-answering (QA) task, with Q as a fake-news article and A as the corresponding verified articles. Specifically, VICTOR adopts reinforcement learning: it first considers fake-news readers’ preferences supported by underlying news recommender systems and then directs their reading sequence towards the verified news articles. Entity Based Sentiment Analysis For Textual Health Advice, Dae Lim Chung
Computer Science Senior Theses
This work explores entity based sentiment analysis for textual health advice through deep learning. We fine tuned a pretrained BERT model to analyze sentiments across five different predetermined categories which consist of food, medicine, disease, exercise, and vitality for three different sentiments: positive, negative, and neutral. Original set of annotated medical dataset from Dartmouth College’s Persist Lab was used to conduct the experiments. For the aim of tailoring the data for the purpose of entity based sentiment analysis, we explored data transformation techniques to generate optimum training examples. During the experiments, we were able to discover that the wide variety …

Trend: Temporal Event And Node Dynamics For Graph Representation Learning, Zhihao Wen, Yuan Fang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Temporal graph representation learning has drawn significant attention for the prevalence of temporal graphs in the real world. However, most existing works resort to taking discrete snapshots of the temporal graph, or are not inductive to deal with new nodes, or do not model the exciting effects which is the ability of events to influence the occurrence of another event. In this work, We propose TREND, a novel framework for temporal graph representation learning, driven by TempoRal Event and Node Dynamics and built upon a Hawkes process-based graph neural network (GNN). TREND presents a few major advantages: (1) it is …

User Satisfaction Estimation With Sequential Dialogue Act Modeling In Goal-Oriented Conversational Systems, Yang Deng, Wenxuan Zhang, Wai Lam, Hong Cheng, Helen Meng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
User Satisfaction Estimation (USE) is an important yet challenging task in goal-oriented conversational systems. Whether the user is satisfied with the system largely depends on the fulfillment of the user’s needs, which can be implicitly reflected by users’ dialogue acts. However, existing studies often neglect the sequential transitions of dialogue act or rely heavily on annotated dialogue act labels when utilizing dialogue acts to facilitate USE. In this paper, we propose a novel framework, namely USDA, to incorporate the sequential dynamics of dialogue acts for predicting user satisfaction, by jointly learning User Satisfaction Estimation and Dialogue Act Recognition tasks. In …

As part of the large number of scientific articles being published every year, the publication rate of biomedical literature has been increasing. Consequently, there has been considerable effort to harness and summarize the massive amount of biomedical research articles. While transformer-based encoder-decoder models in a vanilla source document-to-summary setting have been extensively studied for abstractive summarization in different domains, their major limitations continue to be entity hallucination (a phenomenon where generated summaries constitute entities not related to or present in source article(s)) and factual inconsistency. This problem is exacerbated in a biomedical setting where named entities and their semantics (which …
